To play a classic arcade shooter on Steam, choose the exact game or collection, install it from its Steam store page, launch it from your Library, and use the game’s own controls screen to learn its movement, firing, start, pause, and menu inputs. A controller is optional: check the store page’s controller-support label before planning a controller-only setup. For a television or couch setup, Steam Big Picture provides a controller-oriented interface, while Steam Input can translate controller buttons into keyboard, mouse, or gamepad events when a game’s native mapping is unsuitable.
Start with the exact game, not the genre
“Classic arcade shooter” describes a type of game, not one fixed Steam product. Different releases can contain different machines, games, menus, input systems, operating-system requirements, and controller support. Before installing anything, open the store page for the particular shooter, remake, or collection you intend to play.

Check the store listing
Read the current listing for four items that cannot be generalized from the title alone:
- Supported platform and system requirements.
- Current price and whether the listing is available in your region.
- Which arcade games or versions are included in a collection.
- The controller-support label shown by Steam.
These details can change by edition and region. A collection may include several shooters but still require a keyboard or mouse for part of its setup. Do not assume that an older arcade game will run with every controller or that a controller-friendly Steam interface means the game itself is controller-friendly.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Understand Steam’s controller labels
| Store-page label | What Steam says it means | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Full Controller Support | The game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller. | A controller-only setup is intended to cover installation, launching, and play, although the game’s own layout still matters. |
| Partial Controller Support | A keyboard or mouse may be needed for some installation, configuration, or interface steps. | Keep a keyboard or mouse available even if gameplay itself works with a controller. |
| No controller label or an unspecified label | The store page does not establish a controller-only experience. | Plan to test the game’s controls and do not buy hardware on the assumption of universal support. |
Steam explains the difference in its Big Picture mode support documentation. The label is a useful starting point, not a promise that every button will match your preferred layout.
Install the shooter through Steam
1. Open the game’s store page
In the Steam client, use the store search to find the exact title. Confirm the edition or collection before selecting it. If several releases share a name, compare the included games and the controller label rather than choosing by artwork alone.
2. Review requirements and availability
Scroll through the listing’s system requirements and regional purchase information. The requirements, price, and availability belong to that listing and date; they are not properties of the arcade-shooter genre. If the page identifies a collection, note whether the title you want is actually included.
3. Purchase or add the game, then install
Complete Steam’s normal purchase or library-add process if the title is not already in your account. Select the installation option on the store page or in your Library, choose the destination drive when Steam asks, and wait for the download and installation to finish. Leave enough storage for the specific release rather than relying on a generic estimate for arcade games.
4. Launch from the Library
Open Library, select the installed game, and choose Play. The first launch may show the game’s own configuration, display, or input screen. Read that screen before trying to infer controls from another arcade title; movement, firing, start, pause, and menu actions vary by game.

Choose keyboard and mouse or a controller
Keyboard and mouse
Keyboard and mouse are the fallback when a game has Partial Controller Support, when a menu does not respond to a gamepad, or when the game’s native control screen lists keyboard inputs. Use the game’s documented bindings rather than assuming a particular key fires or starts a credit. If the title includes a manual, open it from the store page or the game’s own help menu and follow its labels exactly.
Controller
A controller can make a shooter feel closer to a living-room arcade setup, but support is title-specific. Steam’s support information lists Steam, official Xbox, official DualShock 4 and DualSense, and official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Third-party devices may work, yet they are not presented as officially supported by that support page. Even with an officially listed controller, the game’s store label and in-game controls screen remain the authority for that title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConnect the controller before launching if the game does not detect devices added after startup. Then check the store label and open the game’s own controls or options screen. If the game offers separate layouts for a gamepad, select the one it documents; do not treat a generic button diagram as universal.
Use Steam Big Picture for a TV or couch setup
Big Picture is Steam’s controller-oriented client interface. It lets you browse and launch games with a larger, television-friendly layout, but it does not add controller support to a game that lacks it. Steam states that any Steam game can be played while in Big Picture mode, while also noting that not all Steam games support controller use.
Enter Big Picture mode
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select the Big Picture button in the client’s top-right area.
- Alternatively, press the controller’s Home button while using Steam if that shortcut is enabled on your system.
- Browse to Library, select the installed shooter, and choose Play.
Steam’s interface can change, so the button’s exact position or appearance may differ between client versions. The underlying purpose is the same: Big Picture replaces the ordinary desktop browsing interface with a controller-oriented one.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Exit Big Picture mode
Use Menu, then Power, then Exit Big Picture Mode. If your client presents a revised menu, look for the equivalent exit command rather than closing the game window by force.

Once the shooter is running, open its controls, input, or options screen. Identify the entries for movement, fire, secondary fire if present, start, pause, menu navigation, and any coin or credit action. The actual names and assignments are game-specific, so this screen or the game manual should decide what each input does.
Test every required action
- Move in every direction and verify that the character, ship, or cursor responds consistently.
- Fire and test any alternate fire or bomb action the game exposes.
- Confirm that start and pause work from the seat where you will play.
- Open and close a menu, then return to gameplay.
Testing these actions before starting a long session prevents a common mistake: a controller may appear connected while one menu command still requires a keyboard. That is especially important on a Partial Controller Support listing.
Remap a controller with Steam Input when the default layout is wrong
If the game recognizes the controller but its default assignments are uncomfortable or incomplete, Steam Input’s legacy mode can translate controller inputs into the events the game expects. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says that legacy mode can rebind any controller input to an emulated mouse, keyboard, or gamepad input, including XInput events.
Decide what the game expects
Look at the game’s own controls screen first. If it asks for a keyboard key, map the controller button to that key. If it expects mouse movement or a mouse click, use a mouse emulation mapping. If it exposes a gamepad layout, send the corresponding gamepad input instead. The correct choice depends on the selected game; there is no universal arcade-shooter mapping.

Apply a legacy binding
- Open the game’s controller-configuration screen in Steam from the game’s Library entry.
- Select the legacy-binding option when it is available for that title and controller.
- Choose the physical controller input you want to change.
- Assign the keyboard, mouse, or gamepad event that matches the control shown by the game.
- Save or apply the configuration, return to the game, and test the changed action in a safe menu or practice screen.
Steam’s labels and configuration screens can be revised over time. If a current client uses different wording, look for the game-specific controller configuration and the option that defines an emulated input rather than assuming a particular menu path.
Change one action at a time. If you remap several buttons before testing, it becomes difficult to tell whether the problem is the physical controller, the game’s native layout, or one incorrect emulated event.

Check the Steam Overlay
For Steam Controller configuration failures, Valve’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking whether the Steam Overlay is enabled and working. Open the overlay in the game using Steam’s configured overlay shortcut. If it does not appear, enable the overlay in Steam’s settings, restart the client or game as necessary, and try the controller configuration again. This check is specifically documented for Steam Controller configuration issues; it is not a diagnosis for every possible USB, Bluetooth, or game bug.
Check whether the input style is supported
Valve also notes that the selected input style may not be supported by the game. If a legacy mapping sends an event the game cannot read, switch to the input type shown in the game’s controls screen. For example, a title that only accepts keyboard commands will not benefit from a mapping that sends an unrelated gamepad event.
Keep a keyboard available for Partial Support
If the store page says Partial Controller Support, use a keyboard or mouse for installation, configuration, or menus that do not respond to the controller. This is expected by the label and does not necessarily mean that gameplay cannot use a gamepad.

Separate connection problems from mapping problems
- If Steam cannot see the controller at all, verify the device connection and whether it appears in Steam’s controller settings before changing in-game bindings.
- If Steam sees the controller but the game ignores it, check the store support label, the game’s own input screen, and the Steam Input configuration.
- If some buttons work and others do not, compare each missing action with the game’s documented input type and remap only that action.
- If the game works in the desktop client but not in Big Picture, test the same title and configuration in the other interface to determine whether the issue is the game mapping or the client mode.
Example: a classic shooter collection on Steam
Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection is one Steam example of a classic shoot ’em up collection. Its store page labels it Partial Controller Support. That label makes it a useful illustration of the setup process: you can investigate controller play, but you should keep a keyboard or mouse available for steps the collection does not expose through a gamepad.
This example is not a universal recommendation or a claim about every game in the genre. Before buying it, read the current page for its included titles, price, platform requirements, and regional availability. Apply the same checks to any other classic shooter or compilation you select.
Choose the setup that fits your play location
| Setup | Use it when | Verify first | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard and mouse in the standard Steam client | The game lists keyboard inputs, has Partial Controller Support, or you want the simplest fallback. | The game’s controls screen or manual. | It may feel less like an arcade cabinet and may be inconvenient from a television. |
| Supported controller in the standard Steam client | The store page indicates controller support and the game’s layout suits your device. | The support label and each required action in the game’s controls screen. | Button assignments vary by title, and some menus may still need a keyboard on Partial Support games. |
| Controller with Steam Big Picture | You play on a television or want a controller-oriented Steam interface. | That the game itself supports your controller well enough for launch and play. | Big Picture does not give controller support to games that lack it. |
| Steam Input legacy bindings | The game accepts keyboard, mouse, or gamepad events but its native controller layout is unsuitable. | The exact input type shown by the game. | Incorrect emulation can produce missing or duplicated actions, and support depends on the selected game. |
What remains game-specific
No single guide can provide universal movement, fire, pause, system, price, or compatibility instructions for an unnamed shooter. Those facts belong to the selected Steam listing and release. A dedicated arcade stick is likewise not established as compatible simply because a game is an arcade shooter; verify the hardware and game support separately.
Use the game’s listing for current commercial and technical details, Steam’s controller label for the expected level of controller-only operation, the in-game controls screen for actual assignments, and Steam Input only when you need to translate those assignments. Keeping those sources separate prevents a convenient setup in one title from being mistaken for a guarantee in another.
Quick Recap
Final setup checklist
- Identify the exact shooter or collection and open its current Steam store page.
- Check platform requirements, price, regional availability, included titles, and the controller-support label.
- Install the game, then launch it from Library.
- Use the game’s own controls screen or manual for movement, fire, start, pause, and menu actions.
- Choose keyboard and mouse or a controller based on the title’s support level.
- For a television, enter Big Picture from Steam’s top-right button or the controller Home shortcut.
- If a mapping is wrong, use Steam Input legacy bindings to send the keyboard, mouse, or gamepad event the game expects.
- If configuration fails, check the Steam Overlay and whether the chosen input style is supported.
- Keep a keyboard or mouse available whenever the listing says Partial Controller Support.
