The PS5 external disc drive is a removable add-on for specific newer PlayStation 5 consoles. To install Sony’s CFI-ZDD1, shut the console down, remove its short feet and circular cover, click the drive into the two marked mounting holes, fit the supplied cover and long feet, then reconnect the console. The first pairing requires an internet connection; it is not an offline-only setup.
Which PS5 consoles support the external disc drive?
Check the model identifier before buying or opening the package. The drive is not a universal accessory for every PS5 that happens to be called a “Digital Edition.” Sony’s support information limits the add-on to particular model groups, while its product listing identifies the current drive as CFI-ZDD1.

| Console family | Compatibility stated by Sony | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition slim | Compatible model groups include CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 | Read the CFI identifier on the console or its packaging; do not rely only on the Digital Edition name |
| PS5 Pro | Compatible model group includes CFI-7000 | Confirm that the console is from the CFI-7000 family |
| Earlier PS5 model groups | Not listed by Sony for this add-on | Do not assume physical fit or software support |
The precise product phrase is “Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1.” Sony’s listing says the package includes the drive, a white drive cover, two plastic horizontal stand feet and a user manual. Regional stock, pricing and return terms vary, so confirm those details with the seller before purchasing.

Where to find the CFI model number
Use the model identifier printed on the console or its original packaging. The relevant portion begins with CFI-. Compare the complete identifier with the supported CFI-2000/CFI-2100 slim or CFI-7000 Pro families. A console’s marketing name, storage capacity or color is not enough to establish compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
What you need before installation
- The CFI-ZDD1 drive and its supplied circular cover and long horizontal feet.
- A compatible PS5 in the CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 model families listed above.
- A flat, stable work surface covered with a soft, clean cloth. The cloth helps prevent scratches while the console is upside down.
- Access to the PS5 power cable and display or network cables after the hardware is attached.
- An internet connection for the initial drive-to-console pairing. Sony’s wording is: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.”
Do not work on the console while it is running, in Rest Mode or warm from recent use. Save your work, shut the PS5 down completely and allow it to cool before turning it over.
Install and pair the PS5 disc drive
Follow the physical steps in Sony’s order. The drive and console use clips and molded mounting points; forcing a panel or inserting the drive at an angle can damage the fit.
- Turn off the PS5 from the Control Center. Press the PS button, open the Control Center, choose Power, and select Turn Off PS5. Wait until the console’s lights go out completely.
- Disconnect everything. Unplug the AC power cord and remove the other cables. Do not leave the console connected while you remove its cover or feet.
- Let the console cool. Place it on the soft cloth only after it has cooled enough to handle comfortably. Keep small parts where they cannot roll away.
- Turn the console over. Position the PS5 bottom-up with its front facing you. The orientation matters because the feet and cover are shaped for this position.
- Remove the short horizontal feet. Lift or release the short feet that came with the console. Set them aside rather than discarding them; they are needed if you later remove the drive.
- Remove the circular cover. Release the cover’s clips and lift it away. Avoid levering the edge with a sharp object or twisting the panel.
- Identify the mounting points. On the exposed console, locate the two holes marked with upside-down triangle symbols. These are the points that receive the drive’s clips.
- Align the drive. Hold the drive so its clips line up with both marked holes. Keep the drive level instead of engaging one clip while the other is offset.
- Press until it clicks. Apply firm, even pressure until the drive is fully seated and you hear the retaining click. If it does not seat, lift it away and check alignment rather than increasing force.
- Fit the supplied circular cover. Use the cover included with the drive, align its clips with the console and press around the panel until it clicks into place.
- Install the long horizontal feet. The drive package supplies longer feet to replace the short originals. Align each foot and press it into position so the console rests evenly.
- Reconnect the cables. Return the AC cable and the other cables you removed. Make sure each connector is fully inserted before switching on.
- Power on the PS5. Start the console normally. The system should detect the attached drive and present an on-screen pairing or setup prompt.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet if necessary. From the home screen, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select a Wi-Fi network or wired LAN, then enter the requested security details.
- Complete the pairing prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions to associate the drive with this console. The initial association cannot be completed without internet access.
- Test with a supported disc. Insert a game or movie disc after setup finishes. A disc game installs automatically according to Sony’s getting-started guidance, then appears on the Games home screen.
What a properly seated drive looks like
The drive should sit flush with the console, the circular cover should be level with the surrounding shell and the longer feet should support the console without rocking. A gap, loose cover, uneven foot or drive that moves when touched indicates that a clip has not engaged correctly. Turn the PS5 off and correct the physical installation before inserting media.

The drive can be physically installed while the PS5 is offline, but Sony requires internet access for the initial pairing between the drive and console. This is a setup requirement, not a statement that every disc playback session needs an active connection. Connect the console through Wi-Fi or wired LAN at the network settings path above, finish the pairing prompt, and then test the drive.
If you are preparing the console somewhere without internet service, complete the hardware installation only when you can later connect it to a network. A local disc, a USB cable or a television connection does not substitute for the online pairing step.
Disc formats supported by CFI-ZDD1
Sony lists the drive for optical game and movie formats, including:
| Media | Support stated by Sony | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Supported | 4K Ultra HD movie playback |
| Blu-ray | Supported | Standard Blu-ray movies and compatible game media |
| DVD | Supported | DVD movie playback |
| PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray | Listed in the instruction-manual information | Physical PS5 games |
| Compatible PS4 Blu-ray media | Listed in the instruction-manual information | Physical PS4 games that the console supports |
Optical compatibility does not override game compatibility rules. A disc can be the correct physical format yet still require a PS5 system update, a supported title, an account entitlement or another software condition. The drive itself is not a replacement for those console requirements.
How to use the drive after pairing
Installing a physical game
- Turn on the paired PS5 and sign in if the console requests it.
- Insert the game disc with the printed side oriented as shown by the console’s disc slot.
- Wait while the PS5 reads the disc and begins installation. Sony’s getting-started guide says the installed disc game appears on Games home.
- Leave the disc available when launching a title that uses it as a license check; installation does not necessarily remove the need for the disc.
Playing a movie
Insert a supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD and select the media tile that appears on the home screen. Playback behavior can depend on the disc’s region, content protection and the console’s software. If a particular title is rejected, test another supported disc before concluding that the drive is defective.
Removing the drive safely
Remove the drive only when the console is powered down and cool. Keep every original part because the short feet and original circular cover are needed to return the console to its drive-free configuration.
- Open the Control Center, choose Power > Turn Off PS5, unplug the AC cord and disconnect the remaining cables.
- Wait for the console to cool, then place it bottom-up on a soft cloth with the front facing you.
- Remove the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive.
- Release and lift off the circular drive cover.
- Use the drive’s concave section to lift it away from the mounting points. Do not pull on the disc slot or pry against the console shell.
- Reinstall the original circular cover and the short horizontal feet that came with the PS5.
- Reconnect the cables and power on the console.
Store the removed drive, its cover and both sets of feet together in a dry, protected place. Keeping the parts together prevents a later installation or resale from being held up by a missing panel or foot.

Troubleshooting setup and pairing problems
The drive does not appear after installation
- Turn the PS5 off again, unplug it and verify that the drive clips are aligned with both upside-down-triangle holes.
- Check that you heard the click and that the drive sits flush rather than tilted.
- Confirm that the circular cover and long feet are fully clipped in; a misaligned cover can indicate that the drive is not seated correctly.
- Reconnect the AC cable and other cables firmly, then start the console again.
- Recheck the CFI model group. A console outside the CFI-2000/2100 slim or CFI-7000 Pro families is not established as compatible by Sony.
The pairing prompt cannot finish
- Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection and confirm that the PS5 has a working Wi-Fi or wired LAN connection.
- Complete any network security or sign-in prompts, then restart the setup prompt.
- Check that the power and other cables are seated and that the drive has not shifted from its mounting holes.
- If the error persists after the model, physical fit and network connection are confirmed, use current PlayStation Support for the exact error code and recovery instructions.
A disc is not recognized
- Remove the disc and inspect it for fingerprints, cracks or heavy scratches; clean it according to the disc maker’s guidance.
- Try another supported game or movie disc to separate a media problem from a drive problem.
- Confirm that the disc is one of the supported formats: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD, including compatible PS5 and PS4 game media.
- Restart the PS5 after confirming the drive is still flush and securely clipped.
The console is unstable after fitting the feet
Power down and check that the two long feet supplied with the drive are installed in the correct locations and pressed fully into their clips. Do not continue using a console that rocks on its stand, because movement can stress the drive and panels.

There is one official compatible drive model identified for this setup: CFI-ZDD1. The useful decision is therefore not a comparison of several Sony drive models, but whether your console, network situation and media needs match the accessory.
| Decision question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no |
|---|---|---|
| Is the console in the CFI-2000/2100 slim or CFI-7000 Pro family? | Continue checking the remaining requirements | Do not purchase on the assumption that the drive will fit |
| Can the console connect to the internet during first setup? | The online pairing step can be completed | Delay installation until a connection is available |
| Do you need physical PS5/PS4 games or optical movies? | The drive’s listed media support addresses that use | The accessory may add little value to an entirely digital library |
| Can you keep the original cover and short feet? | Future removal is straightforward | Do not discard them; missing parts complicate removal or resale |
Important limitations and support boundaries
Sony’s setup material specifies the supported model groups, installation order, media formats and internet requirement, but it does not publish a complete public failure tree for every pairing error. For an unresolved error, record the exact on-screen message, confirm the CFI identifier and physical installation, and consult current PlayStation Support. For a purchase, delivery or defect dispute, use the seller’s regional return and warranty terms.
Regional availability and pricing are not fixed technical specifications. Verify them for your country at the time of purchase, and do not buy a drive until the console’s CFI model has been checked.
The Bottom Line
For a compatible CFI-2000/CFI-2100 slim or CFI-7000 Pro, install the CFI-ZDD1 while the console is unplugged and cool, replace the cover and feet in Sony’s specified order, then connect the PS5 to the internet to complete the one-time pairing. After that, the drive supports the listed PS5/PS4 game media and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD playback.
