Set up a Xiaomi fitness tracker from Xiaomi’s Mi Fitness app—not from the phone’s Bluetooth menu as the normal first step. Install or open Mi Fitness, sign in, allow its requested permissions, choose Add device, select your exact tracker model (or scan the QR code shown on the tracker), and keep the phone beside the band. When the band shows the pairing confirmation, approve it on the band and tap Pair on the phone.
The exact screens depend on the tracker model, whether you use Android or iPhone, and whether this is a first pairing or a move from another phone. The procedures below use Xiaomi’s documented Smart Band 9, Smart Band 9 Active and Smart Band 10 workflows while identifying where a different model may show different labels.

Choose the right setup path first
Before touching the pairing controls, identify the tracker’s exact model and the phone situation. Xiaomi does not use one universal menu sequence for every band.
| Situation | Start here | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| First time pairing | Mi Fitness > Add device | Search nearby, select the exact model, or scan the QR code when the app and band offer that option. |
| Moving to another phone | Unbind or reset the band as required by its model, then add it in Mi Fitness on the new phone | Some newer models include Settings > System > Connect new phone. Do not assume every band has this menu. |
| Same Xiaomi Account on the new phone | Try the model’s connect-new-phone or unbind flow before resetting | The Smart Band 9 Active guidance treats a same-account transfer differently from a different-account transfer. |
| Different Xiaomi Account | Follow the model’s unbind or factory-reset instructions | A factory reset can be required and can erase device state, so use it only when the model instructions call for it. |
| Band is missing from discovery | Check Mi Fitness, Bluetooth, distance, battery and connection to another phone | Factory reset and re-pairing come later, after simpler checks. |
Prepare the phone and tracker
- Identify the model. Read the name on the box, the band’s information screen or its existing Mi Fitness device page. In Mi Fitness, select that exact model rather than a similar-looking band.
- Install or open Mi Fitness. The documented Xiaomi pairing flows begin inside Mi Fitness. The app is the place to add the tracker and complete account binding.
- Sign in to a Xiaomi Account. Smart Band 9 Active’s iPhone instructions specifically require signing in and completing the permission prompts.
- Charge the tracker enough to stay on. If it cannot power on, pairing cannot begin. The reviewed Xiaomi instructions do not identify a universal replacement charging cable, so check the exact model before buying an accessory.
- Keep the devices close. Xiaomi’s iPhone instructions tell you to keep the phone and band near each other while the app searches.
- Turn on Bluetooth. Discovery and reconnection require the phone’s Bluetooth service to be enabled. Do not begin by manually creating a Bluetooth pairing from Settings; use that menu later only when Xiaomi’s recovery instructions tell you to forget an old pairing.
- Be ready to grant permissions. Accept the permissions Mi Fitness requests during setup. Refusing a required permission can prevent discovery or synchronization.
- Prevent another phone from taking the connection. If the band was previously used with another phone, keep that phone’s Bluetooth off and close Mi Fitness on it while you work, unless you need it to forget the old device.
First-time pairing in Mi Fitness
These steps describe the common flow. Button names can vary with the tracker and Mi Fitness version, so follow the prompts shown for your exact model.
#1 Best Overall
- Open Mi Fitness and sign in. Complete the account and permission prompts before adding the band.
- Open the add-device control. From the app’s device area, tap the control for adding a device. Xiaomi may label it Add device or show a plus icon.
- Choose a discovery method. Let Mi Fitness search for nearby devices, select the tracker’s exact model from the list, or choose the QR-code option when the band displays a QR code and the app supports scanning it.
- Keep the phone beside the band while it searches. Discovery is short-range; moving away during this step can make the result disappear.
- Verify the result before selecting it. For the Smart Band 9 iPhone procedure, Xiaomi says to match the last four digits of the Bluetooth address shown by the app with the band’s identifier. Use that check when your model presents the same information. It helps avoid selecting somebody else’s nearby tracker.
- Start the connection. Tap the discovered tracker or the matching model. Wait for the band to display its pairing prompt.
- Confirm on the band. When the band shows a check mark or other pairing confirmation, approve it on the band’s screen.
- Accept pairing on the phone. Tap Pair in Mi Fitness or in the phone confirmation displayed by the app. Leave the devices close until the app finishes binding.
- Open the device page once setup completes. Confirm that the tracker appears as connected in Mi Fitness before walking away or closing the app.
What changes on an iPhone
Xiaomi’s Smart Band 9 and Smart Band 9 Active iPhone procedures explicitly include Xiaomi Account sign-in, permission approval and close-range discovery. The Smart Band 9 flow can offer three routes—nearby search, model selection and QR-code scanning—and asks you to confirm the matching Bluetooth-address digits before accepting the connection. If iOS displays a pairing request, approve it only after the band itself shows the confirmation.
If the band was previously attached to an iPhone, iOS may retain the old Bluetooth relationship. Do not repeatedly start new searches while that stale relationship remains; use the unbinding or “forget” procedure described in the transfer and recovery sections below.
What changes on Android
Use the same Mi Fitness-first approach on Android: sign in, grant the requested permissions, add the exact model and follow the prompts on both screens. Android menu wording and permission dialogs vary by phone maker and Android release, so Xiaomi’s model-specific prompts take precedence over a generic Bluetooth tutorial. If the app asks you to confirm a code, check mark or model identifier on the band, complete that confirmation before accepting the phone prompt.

Moving a Xiaomi tracker to another phone
A band normally maintains one active phone relationship. Moving it requires releasing the old relationship in a way that matches the model and Xiaomi Account you will use.
1. Identify the account change
Decide whether the new phone will use the same Xiaomi Account. Xiaomi’s Smart Band 9 Active transfer instructions distinguish same-account and different-account moves. A different account can require a factory reset, while a same-account move may be handled by unbinding or the model’s connect-new-phone function.
2. Check for a “Connect new phone” option
Some newer bands provide a direct transfer path in the band’s menus. Xiaomi documents Settings > System > Connect new phone for applicable models. If your tracker shows that option, use it and follow the instructions on the band and in Mi Fitness. Do not assume that a Smart Band 10, Smart Band 9, or another model has identical menu wording; the feature is model-dependent.

3. Release the old phone’s connection
When the model does not offer a connect-new-phone flow, open Mi Fitness on the old phone and unbind the tracker if Xiaomi’s instructions provide that option. Turn off Bluetooth on the old phone and close Mi Fitness so it cannot immediately reclaim the band while you add it to the new phone.
If the model’s documented transfer path calls for a reset, perform the reset from the band’s own instructions. Treat this as a destructive step: it can erase device state, and it is not a universal first step for every transfer.
4. Add the tracker on the new phone
- Install or open Mi Fitness on the new phone.
- Sign in to the intended Xiaomi Account.
- Grant the permissions requested by the app.
- Tap the add-device control and select the exact tracker model.
- Keep the tracker and new phone close while Mi Fitness searches.
- Confirm the device on the band and tap Pair on the new phone when prompted.
5. Handle an old iPhone that keeps reconnecting
Xiaomi documents a specific Smart Band 9 recovery case: after a factory reset, an old iPhone can continue trying to reconnect. On that old iPhone, open Bluetooth settings, find the band and choose Forget This Device. Then return to Mi Fitness on the new phone and search again. This Bluetooth-settings action is for clearing the stale iPhone relationship; it is not the ordinary first-time setup route.

Troubleshoot a band Mi Fitness cannot find
Work from the least destructive check to the most disruptive. Xiaomi’s Smart Band 10 reconnection guidance places reset and re-pairing after app, Bluetooth, restart and battery checks.
If the band does not appear in the search
- Reopen Mi Fitness. Close and relaunch the app, then use its Connect action if it is shown.
- Check Bluetooth. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in the phone’s quick settings or system settings. If the phone shows a stale connection to the band, follow the model-specific unbind or forget instructions rather than adding a second entry.
- Move the devices together. Keep the band beside the phone and repeat the search.
- Check whether another phone is connected. Turn off Bluetooth on the old phone and close Mi Fitness there. A phone that is still connected can prevent the new search from succeeding.
- Restart the band. Use the tracker’s restart command, then reopen Mi Fitness and search again.
- Check battery-saver settings. Xiaomi notes that battery saver on the phone or band can interfere with reconnection. Temporarily disable the relevant battery-saving mode and retry.
If the app finds the wrong device or several devices
Do not select the first result. Confirm the model name and, where available, compare the last four Bluetooth-address digits with the identifier shown by the band. If the result is not yours, cancel and repeat the search with the tracker close to the phone and competing devices farther away.

If the band appears but pairing never completes
- Make sure the band’s on-screen confirmation was accepted. A phone-side tap alone may not finish the process.
- Keep Mi Fitness open until the binding step completes.
- Restart the band and repeat the add-device flow.
- Check whether an old phone is still connected, then turn off its Bluetooth or unbind the tracker there.
- On an iPhone affected by a reset, use Forget This Device for the old Bluetooth entry before searching again.
If the tracker paired before but will not reconnect
- Open Mi Fitness and use its Connect control if available.
- Verify that the phone’s Bluetooth is on and inspect whether the band is listed as connected.
- Restart the band and reopen Mi Fitness.
- Check battery saver on both the phone and band.
- Only after these checks fail, follow the exact model instructions for a factory reset and fresh pairing.
If a reset did not solve the problem
A reset does not automatically remove every phone-side Bluetooth record. For the documented Smart Band 9 iPhone case, the old iPhone must forget the device after the reset. More generally, repeat the model’s unbind or forget procedure, keep the old phone from reconnecting, and then add the tracker from Mi Fitness on the intended phone.

Factory reset: when it is appropriate and what it changes
Factory reset is a recovery tool, not a default pairing step. Use it when Xiaomi’s instructions for your model require it—for example, when moving between accounts or when simpler reconnection checks have failed. A reset can erase device state and may leave an old phone with a stale Bluetooth entry, so plan to clear that entry before pairing again.
Because Xiaomi’s support instructions are model-specific, do not copy the Smart Band 9 or Smart Band 10 reset path onto another tracker without checking that model’s on-screen instructions. The menu location, confirmation wording and transfer behavior can differ.
Model and situation differences at a glance
| Model or case | Documented detail | How to apply it safely |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Band 9 on iPhone | Mi Fitness can search nearby, let you choose the model or scan the band’s QR code; confirm the device on the band and tap Pair on the phone. | Match the last four Bluetooth-address digits when the app presents them. |
| Smart Band 9 Active on iPhone | Sign in to a Xiaomi Account, accept permissions and keep the phone and band close during discovery. | Use the exact model selection in Mi Fitness; do not substitute a Smart Band 9 procedure without checking the prompt. |
| Smart Band 9 Active moved to a new phone | The path differs for the same Xiaomi Account and a different account; a different account can require a factory reset. | Release the old connection, then add the band from Mi Fitness on the new phone. |
| Newer models with a transfer menu | Some offer Settings > System > Connect new phone. | Use that menu only if it appears on your tracker and follow its prompts. |
| Smart Band 10 reconnection problem | Xiaomi’s sequence starts with Mi Fitness, Bluetooth, restart and battery-saver checks, with reset later. | Escalate in that order instead of resetting immediately. |
| Smart Band 9 reset followed by new-phone pairing | An old iPhone may continue reconnecting after the reset. | On the old iPhone, choose Forget This Device in Bluetooth settings, then search from the new phone. |
Final checks after pairing
- Mi Fitness shows the intended tracker model rather than a similarly named device.
- The band displays a normal connected or paired state after you leave the add-device screen.
- The phone is using the Xiaomi Account you intend to keep associated with the tracker.
- The old phone is no longer connected, especially after a transfer or reset.
- Battery saver is not preventing Mi Fitness from maintaining the connection.
- You know the model-specific recovery path before changing phones again: unbind, connect-new-phone or reset, as applicable.
The dependable rule is simple: begin and end the process in Mi Fitness, confirm the exact model, and use Bluetooth settings only when Xiaomi’s instructions require clearing an old relationship. Android and iPhone labels may differ, but the band’s own confirmation prompt and the model-specific Xiaomi instructions determine which step is valid.
