How to Set Up and Map a Robotic Lawn Mower for the First Time

First identify how your mower navigates: a physical boundary wire, an app-drawn satellite/GNSS boundary, or a hybrid of both. Prepare the lawn, place and power the charging station, install the required wire or positioning equipment, pair the mower with its app, map mowing and no-go areas, and supervise the first complete cycle. Treat that first run as a verification pass rather than assuming the initial map is perfect.

1. Identify the mower’s mapping system before installation

There is no universal robotic-mower setup sequence. Read the manual for the exact model and determine which of these arrangements it uses:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Physical boundary wire: A continuous wire defines the mowing perimeter. Many wired systems also use a guide wire to lead the mower back to the charging station and into remote sections.
  • Virtual boundary: The mower uses satellite/GNSS positioning, an app and sometimes a cloud-coverage service or local reference station. You draw the perimeter and exclusion areas digitally.
  • Hybrid mapping: Some models support both satellite boundaries and a physical wire. A wire can be useful where buildings or trees reduce satellite visibility.

The word “map” can therefore mean different things. It may be a true virtual mowing boundary, an app visualization of a wired installation, or a set of app-defined zones and no-go areas. Husqvarna’s AIM feature, for example, creates a virtual overview on supported models that still use physical boundary and guide wires; it can show the wire, charging station, mower and guide wires rather than replacing the physical installation. See the manufacturer’s explanation of AIM virtual maps.

2. Prepare the lawn, people and equipment

Clear the mowing area

Walk the entire lawn before laying wire or starting an app-guided survey. Remove sticks, toys, stones, leaves, loose cables and other movable objects. Mark or repair holes, exposed roots, drainage failures, steep transitions and slopes that could trap the mower. Locate existing pet-fence wiring so you do not cut or confuse it with the mower installation. If stakes will be driven into the ground or wire buried, identify underground utilities first.

For a Navimow H first setup, the manufacturer’s January 27, 2026 preparation checklist says to cut the grass to 6 cm or less. That is a model-specific preparation instruction, not a universal cutting-height requirement. Keep children and pets away while the boundary is being created and during the initial test run, as the same support guidance advises. Read the complete Navimow H preparation checklist.

Confirm power and included parts

  • Check that an outdoor power source is available where the charging station will sit.
  • Use the supplied power supply, low-voltage cable and connectors as the manual specifies.
  • For a wired installation, obtain only a boundary-wire kit, guide wire and connectors compatible with the exact mower. A wireless-only owner may not need boundary wire.
  • For a virtual installation, confirm whether the mower includes a reference station or requires separate positioning hardware and a coverage subscription.

Do not buy wire simply because a product is marketed as a robotic-mower accessory. Some satellite models can optionally accept a boundary wire for difficult, heavily shaded areas, while other models are designed to work without one.

3. Place and power the charging station

Use a firm, level location

Set the station on stable, reasonably level ground with the cable protected from cutting equipment, standing water and vehicle traffic. Leave the approach and departure space required by the model; the mower must be able to enter, align and reverse from the dock without a wall, hedge, tree or narrow turn immediately in front of it. Route the power cable exactly as directed and make sure the station cannot shift after rain or frost.

Clearances are model-specific. Husqvarna’s iQ installation guidance, for example, calls for an outdoor outlet within 30 feet and six feet of unobstructed backing space. Those figures apply to the cited iQ instructions, not to every mower. Compare your site with the requirements in Husqvarna’s Automower iQ DIY installation guide and your own manual.

Install a reference station when the system needs one

Satellite systems need a clear view of the sky. Mount a required reference station or antenna securely, use its correct power cable and keep the manufacturer’s specified sky view unobstructed. Husqvarna iQ documentation describes a 135-degree open-sky cone for its reference station. A roof edge, dense tree canopy or nearby structure can reduce positioning quality even when the mower itself is outdoors.

Do not move the reference station after drawing virtual boundaries unless you are prepared to recreate the map. Husqvarna states that relocating the iQ reference station after virtual boundaries have been made requires the map to be created again. Record the station’s location before you begin mapping.

4. Wired installation: lay the perimeter and guide wire

Plan one continuous boundary

Draw the intended mowing area on paper or in the manufacturer’s planning tool first. The boundary should surround only grass the mower can safely reach. Route it around ponds, drop-offs, flower beds, play equipment and other hazards according to the model’s diagram. Where an obstacle must remain outside the mowing area, create an island or exclusion loop exactly as the manual shows; incorrect crossings can cancel the signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure the wire at the manufacturer’s stated spacing and depth. Keep it tight enough that a mower cannot catch it, but do not stretch it so hard that seasonal ground movement will pull out the stakes. Connect the two ends to the charging station terminals and follow the startup procedure for checking the boundary circuit.

Add a guide wire when the model supports or recommends one

A guide wire runs from the charging station into the lawn and connects to the boundary circuit as specified by the manufacturer. Its job is to give the mower a reliable route home and help it reach distant work areas. Husqvarna describes the function this way: “In an Automower® installation, the purpose of our patented guide wire is to navigate your Automower® robotic lawn mower back to the charging station when necessary, reducing search times, particularly in complex gardens.”

Route the guide wire through the most useful central or remote area rather than placing it where a bed, tree or narrow corner blocks the path. Complete any guide-wire calibration required by the mower, then test that the mower can follow the wire to the dock.

Use passage measurements only for the models they describe

Husqvarna’s Automower support gives the following dimensions for its cited installations. They are not universal robotic-mower specifications:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Installation condition Husqvarna guidance Scope
Passage with a guide wire At least 60 cm (24 in) between the two boundary wires Husqvarna Automower support instructions
Passage without a guide wire At least 2 m (6 ft 6 in) between the two boundary wires Husqvarna Automower support instructions
Guide wire to boundary wire At least 30 cm (12 in) Husqvarna Automower support instructions
Passages narrower than 2 m (6.5 ft) Husqvarna advises using a guide wire Specific Automower guidance

Read the complete instructions for laying a guide wire and creating a passage before copying any of these dimensions to your yard.

Verify the wired circuit before mowing

  1. Power the station and confirm that its boundary indicator reports a complete circuit.
  2. Start the mower’s boundary or guide-wire test, if the model provides one.
  3. Walk the perimeter and look for loose stakes, pinched cable, accidental crossings and wires too close to hazards.
  4. Place the mower on the wire or guide route as the manual directs and confirm that it turns away from the boundary and can return to the station.

For a complete overview of a wired layout, consult Husqvarna’s wired-installation guide.

5. Virtual-boundary installation: pair, survey and draw the map

Pair the mower and establish positioning

  1. Install the manufacturer’s app and create or sign in to the required account.
  2. Turn on the mower and use the app’s pairing flow. Some systems begin with Bluetooth, then require Wi-Fi, cellular service or a cloud-coverage plan.
  3. Confirm that the mower and any reference station report an adequate satellite or positioning status before you drive the perimeter.
  4. Update the mower firmware if the app requires it before mapping; do not interrupt power during an update.

Exact labels vary. Navimow documents app-guided perimeter mapping and, on its i-Series, an autonomous mapping option. Husqvarna iQ documents Bluetooth app pairing followed by creation of virtual boundaries in the app. Use the screens shown for your model rather than assuming another brand’s menu names apply.

Trace the mowable perimeter slowly

Choose the app’s guided mapping or perimeter-drive mode. Walk or drive the mower around the edge at a steady pace, keeping the machine where its cutting deck can safely operate. Follow every bend, including the entrance to a side lawn. Do not cut across the lawn to save time; a shortcut teaches the map that the skipped ground is not part of the boundary.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Keep the reference station fixed while mapping. If the app reports weak positioning, pause and improve sky visibility or move the equipment only before the map exists. A boundary recorded with unreliable positioning may appear complete but produce wandering edges or missed strips during mowing.

Create no-go areas, passages and secondary zones

Add exclusion areas for pools, beds, trees, paths, drop-offs and any obstacle the mower must not enter. Map narrow passages only when the mower’s specifications support them, and test whether a separate lawn is reachable. If the app supports secondary zones, create each separated area as its own zone and set the access route or starting point requested by the software.

Review the entire map before authorizing a mowing schedule. Check that the drawn edge follows the real grass line, no-go polygons cover the complete hazard, and every remote section has a valid route. Save the map only after the station and reference equipment are in their final positions.

6. Supervise the first complete mowing cycle

The first mowing cycle is a commissioning test. Stay close enough to pause the mower and watch the whole route, not just the first few minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check

  • Boundary accuracy: The mower should turn before crossing the wire or virtual edge and should not shave hazards that were meant to be excluded.
  • Passages: It should enter and exit each corridor without wedging itself or abandoning a remote zone.
  • Obstacle behavior: Watch trees, furniture, toys that could not be removed and irregular ground for unexpected collisions or stuck points.
  • Slopes and transitions: Confirm that the mower can climb, turn and reverse on every surface included in the map.
  • Coverage: Look for an unmapped strip, a zone it never enters or a trajectory that repeatedly follows the wrong line.
  • Return and docking: Verify that it follows the guide wire or positioning route back to the station, aligns correctly and begins charging.

Navimow’s installation guide specifically recommends watching path accuracy, unmapped obstacles and places where the mower could get stuck. Husqvarna’s wired guidance emphasizes checking guide-wire return and docking.

Correct errors immediately

  1. Press pause or stop before lifting or repositioning the mower.
  2. Record the exact location and symptom: crossing edge, missing strip, failed passage, obstacle collision or docking failure.
  3. For a virtual system, edit the boundary or no-go area in the app, then rerun the affected section. If positioning quality is poor, correct the antenna or reference-station environment before editing the map repeatedly.
  4. For a wired system, switch off power before changing the wire. Repair loose stakes, remove kinks, correct an island loop or widen a corridor according to the model’s instructions.
  5. Run the affected route again and confirm that the change solved the problem before leaving the mower unattended.

7. Troubleshoot the first map and route

The mower crosses the boundary

Stop it and check whether the problem is a damaged or incorrectly connected wire, a virtual edge recorded with poor positioning, or a boundary drawn too close to a drop-off. A wired model needs a continuous, correctly terminated circuit; a virtual model needs stable satellite/reference coverage while the edge is retraced. Do not simply enlarge the map until you know which of those failures occurred.

The mower cannot reach a section

Inspect the physical corridor for an overly narrow passage, a guide wire that does not lead toward the remote area, or a virtual map that omitted the entrance. For the Husqvarna passage dimensions listed above, use the manufacturer’s guide-wire arrangement rather than applying the 60 cm or 2 m figures to a different mower.

The mower gets stuck

Look for holes, exposed roots, soft drainage areas, abrupt paving edges, low branches and objects that were not visible during mapping. Remove or repair the obstruction, then update the exclusion area or wire island. A map cannot compensate for terrain that the mower’s traction and clearance limits cannot handle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The mower will not dock

Confirm that the station is level and stable, the approach is unobstructed and the power supply is connected. On a wired mower, test the guide-wire connection and route. On a satellite system, check that the mower and reference equipment still have the required positioning view and that nobody moved the reference station after mapping.

The virtual route looks inaccurate

Pause mapping when the app reports weak positioning, improve the antenna’s sky view and recreate only the affected map if the model permits it. A reference station moved after mapping must be treated as a new coordinate system on systems such as Husqvarna iQ; the documented remedy is to recreate the virtual boundaries.

8. Wired and virtual systems compared

Decision Boundary wire and guide wire App-based virtual boundary
Installation work Plan, lay, secure and connect a physical perimeter; add and calibrate a guide wire when supported. Place or verify positioning equipment, pair the mower and trace the perimeter in the app.
Positioning dependency Correct boundary signal, wire layout and guide-wire path. Satellite/GNSS quality, sky view and, on some systems, cloud coverage or a local reference station.
Layout features Physical islands and passages; a guide wire can lead the mower to distant areas. App-defined exclusion zones, passages and secondary zones when the model supports them.
First-run priority Check circuit status, wire clearance, guide-wire tracking and docking. Check mapped edge, no-go zones, route coverage and position quality.
Parts implications Compatible wire, stakes and connectors are relevant. Reference hardware may be included or required; optional wire may help in heavy shade on some models.

These are installation distinctions, not a universal ranking. The better choice depends on the mower’s design, tree cover, building obstructions, lawn shape and whether you are comfortable revising a physical installation or an app map.

9. Make the installation easy to service

  • Photograph the final wire route, station position and reference-station mount before covering or burying anything.
  • Save the completed app map and note which zones and exclusions were tested.
  • Label the power cable and keep spare model-compatible connectors with the mower’s documentation.
  • Do not relocate the station or reference equipment casually; a virtual map may need to be recreated, and a wired mower may need a new approach or guide-wire test.
  • After landscaping, construction or adding a play area, repeat a supervised route check before allowing unattended mowing.

A successful first setup is not merely a mower that starts. It is a stable station, a complete boundary, safe exclusions, reliable access to every intended zone and a demonstrated return to charge.
