What an Alexa routine does
A routine is an if-this-then-that sequence inside Alexa. An event starts it, and Alexa performs the actions you selected in order. A single routine can combine spoken responses, music, briefings, skills, calls, compatible Fire TV controls, and smart-home commands.

You can make a routine for the whole household or associate it with an individual Alexa Profile. Voice recognition can restrict a voice-triggered routine to a recognized person. Some options appear only when the account, device, region, or selected event supports them, so the labels in your app may differ slightly.

A routine that switches a light, changes a thermostat, or operates another appliance does require an Alexa-compatible connected device.

Before you create a routine
- Install and sign in to the Alexa mobile app.
- Decide what event should start the automation and what result you want.
- For device control, confirm that the product is Alexa-compatible and that its manufacturer account or companion skill is ready.
- Check your Wi-Fi arrangement. Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on the 2.4 GHz band, so a phone or router using a different band can prevent setup.
- For person-recognition features, confirm that the required Echo hardware and profile are available before designing the routine.
Amazon states that one account can contain up to 200 routines. The stated ceiling is an account limit; Amazon does not date that figure on the relevant help page.
How to create an Alexa routine in the app
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select More, then Routines. This is also the screen used later to edit, deactivate, or delete routines.
- Select the plus icon.
- Choose Add an event. Follow the prompts for the event that should start the routine.
- Choose Add an action. Select what Alexa should do. You can add multiple actions to the same routine.
- Review additional settings. Depending on the event and action, Alexa may offer conditions, a delay, a target device, a profile, or a specific Echo on which to speak.
- Select Save. Test the routine using its trigger and confirm that every action runs in the intended order.
If the app does not show an option mentioned in an example, that normally means the selected event, device, account, or location does not support it. Choose another event or update the device setup rather than assuming the routine is broken.
Build the first version with one obvious event and one action. Once it works, reopen the routine and add the remaining actions. This makes it easier to identify whether a missing permission, disconnected device, or unsupported action is responsible for a failure.
Available triggers and what they require
| Trigger type | How it starts | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | You say a chosen phrase, such as “Alexa, start my morning.” | Voice ID can be used where Alexa offers recognition for the profile. |
| Time | A specified clock time or schedule. | Check the routine’s schedule and any day or condition choices shown in the app. |
| Sound detection | Alexa detects a supported sound, such as a dog barking or a person snoring. | Sound options are feature-specific and are not available on every device or account. |
| Presence Detection | A supported presence signal indicates that someone is home or nearby. | Availability depends on the devices and presence features configured for the household. |
| Alarm | An Alexa alarm event starts the routine. | Use the alarm-related choices presented by your account; they can vary by device. |
| Visual ID | A compatible Echo Show recognizes a configured Visual ID profile. | Requires a supported Echo Show and a Visual ID profile; see the advanced setup below. |
| Smart-home event | A compatible device reports an event, such as a sensor state or another supported change. | The device must be connected to Alexa and expose the relevant event. |
Amazon also documents temperature-based actions on Echo Dot (5th Generation) and Echo Pop. This is a device-specific capability, not a guarantee that every Echo or every account will offer the same temperature choices.
Triggers and actions are separate decisions. A device might provide a useful event but not the command you want afterward, or it might accept an on/off command without exposing a sensor event. Confirm both sides in the app before buying hardware for a particular automation.
Actions you can combine
After selecting an event, use Add an action repeatedly to build the sequence. Depending on your devices and enabled skills, Alexa can:
- Play music or another audio selection.
- Read a briefing or traffic report.
- Start an Alexa skill.
- Make a call.
- Control a compatible Fire TV device.
- Turn compatible lights and other smart-home devices on or off.
- Adjust dimmable lights.
- Arm a supported connected home-security system.
A routine may include several actions, but each action must be available to the selected account and device. If Alexa offers a device selector, choose the exact Echo or smart-home device that should respond; otherwise the result may come from an unintended room.

For Fire TV, calls, briefings, and skills, make sure the relevant account or device is selected when Alexa presents that choice.
Useful routine patterns
Voice-started morning routine
Create a voice event with a short phrase that household members will remember. Add a briefing, traffic report, calendar information, and music as separate actions. Voice routines do not require a smart-home device, so this is a useful first test of the workflow.

Scheduled lights and briefing
Choose a time event, select the days, then add a briefing and compatible light controls. A light action requires a connected bulb or switch; the routine itself is still created in the Alexa app. Review the selected location and target device before saving.
Sound-triggered response
Where your Echo offers sound detection, select the supported sound event, such as a dog barking or a person snoring, then add an audio, notification, or compatible device action shown by the app. Sound detection is not universal, so do not purchase an Echo or design a critical automation until the required event appears in your account.

Alarm-triggered routine
Use an alarm event when the sequence should begin in relation to an Alexa alarm. The app determines which alarm choices are available. Review the days, target Echo, and any conditions before saving, then test the routine with a noncritical action.
Thermostat routine
Amazon’s thermostat example follows this path:
- Open More > Routines and select +.
- Choose the event that should start the routine.
- Select Add action > Smart Home > All Devices.
- Choose the thermostat and the available thermostat action.
- Add any other actions, review the settings, and select Save.
The exact thermostat actions depend on what the connected product exposes to Alexa. Use the options shown for your device rather than expecting every model to provide the same controls.
Security arming at bedtime
An eligible routine can arm a supported connected home-security system along with other bedtime actions. Amazon states that a routine can arm such a system but cannot disarm it. Keep disarming as a deliberate manual or separately authenticated operation.
Choosing a device for a specific routine
Buying hardware is optional for app-only and voice-only routines. If a routine needs a bulb, smart plug, thermostat, camera, or another connected product, compare three things before you buy:
- Alexa compatibility: Confirm that the exact model, not just the product category, can connect to Alexa.
- The required event or action: Check that it exposes the trigger or command your routine needs. “Works with Alexa” does not by itself prove that every feature is available in routines.
- Hardware, profile, and network requirements: Some features require a particular Echo model, a Voice ID or Visual ID profile, or a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi setup.
Alexa-compatible bulbs are a straightforward optional example: they can supply a light action, but they are unnecessary if the routine only plays music or reads a briefing. Amazon also identifies smart plugs, thermostats, and cameras as connectable categories. Check the product’s current compatibility details and the choices shown in the Alexa app rather than relying on the category name alone.
Connect a smart-home device for routine control
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select the + icon, then Add Device.
- Choose the device type and brand.
- Follow the prompts to connect the device and complete any manufacturer-account or skill sign-in.
- Return to More > Routines and add the device action.
Check compatibility before buying or configuring a product. Amazon identifies bulbs, smart plugs, thermostats, and cameras among the device categories that can be connected, but compatibility is model-specific. A product may connect successfully and still omit the exact trigger or action you wanted.
If discovery fails, verify that the device is powered, on the same household account, and connected to the supported Wi-Fi band. Recheck the manufacturer setup before rebuilding the routine. Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands; a network or setup process limited to another band can block pairing.

Manage, change, pause, or delete routines
Open More > Routines to see the routines on the account. Select a routine to inspect its event, actions, conditions, and target device. With an account limit of up to 200 routines, clear names and periodic cleanup become useful as automations accumulate.
Recommended Free Tools
Edit a routine
Open the routine, change the event or action, adjust any available condition or device setting, and save. If an action has disappeared, the connected device or skill may no longer expose it to Alexa; reconnecting the device can restore the option. Test the edited sequence rather than assuming a saved change affected every step.
Deactivate a routine temporarily
Use the routine’s control in the routines list or its detail view to deactivate it. Deactivation preserves the setup while preventing the event from running, which is preferable to deleting a seasonal or vacation routine.
Delete a routine permanently
Open the routine from the list and choose the delete control shown by the app. Confirm only after checking that no other household member relies on the trigger. Deleting is different from deactivating: it removes the saved sequence instead of keeping it available for later use.
Review automatically created routines
Amazon’s Frustration-Free Automation can create routines when compatible devices are set up. Alexa sends an app notification and labels those entries in Your Routines. From the routines area, you can view, edit, deactivate, or delete them. Amazon also documents a setting in Manage Your Content & Devices for turning off Frustration-Free Automation’s creation of routines.

Amazon’s developer guidance says that when a skill creates a routine for a customer, that skill cannot later edit or cancel it. The customer must manage it in the Alexa app. This restriction applies to skill-created routines and should not be assumed to describe every routine created manually in the app.
Set up Visual ID Personal Presence Routines
Visual ID routines are an optional advanced feature. Amazon lists support for Echo Show 8 (2nd Generation and newer), Echo Show 10, Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21. Model support and availability can change, so check the current device requirements when configuring one.
You need Visual ID enabled and a Visual ID profile for the person Alexa should detect. The setup path is:
- Open More > Routines and select +.
- Select Add an Event > Presence Routine.
- Choose the compatible Echo Show.
- Choose the Visual ID profile to detect.
- Add the desired actions, review the settings, and select Save.
Without a supported Echo Show or configured Visual ID profile, the Presence Routine option may not appear. This feature is useful when the routine needs to react to a recognized person, but it is not required for a general nearby-person trigger or for ordinary voice and time routines.

Use Echo Show camera detection separately
Echo Show Home Monitoring can provide a routine trigger when the device camera detects a nearby person. Amazon describes this as a separate feature from Visual ID. For this presence-detection function, camera-view processing occurs on the Echo Show and Amazon says it sends no video or images to the cloud for that detection.
Because camera detection and Visual ID have different requirements, choose the feature that matches your goal. A simple nearby-person trigger does not establish a person’s identity, while Visual ID requires a profile and supported hardware. Explain the camera-based presence feature to household members and place the Echo Show where the intended detection area is appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a routine does not run
The trigger is missing
Some triggers are limited to particular Echo models, account settings, regions, or connected devices. Confirm that the event is supported on the device you selected. Temperature and Visual ID options are examples of feature-specific choices. Sound, presence, and alarm choices can likewise vary by account and hardware.
The device cannot be found
Return to Devices > + > Add Device, confirm compatibility, and complete the device maker’s connection steps. Check power and the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi requirement Amazon cites for most smart-home Wi-Fi products. If the product connects but the required action is absent, verify its Alexa integration and supported capabilities rather than repeatedly scanning for it.
The routine runs but the wrong device responds
Edit the routine and select the intended target device or Echo. If several rooms contain similarly named devices, rename them clearly and use distinct room names. Review any additional setting that chooses where Alexa should speak or which device should perform the action.
Only part of the sequence runs
Open the routine and inspect each action. Remove an unavailable skill or disconnected device, save the routine, and test again. Additional conditions or target-device settings can also prevent an individual action while allowing earlier actions to run. Testing one action at a time helps identify the failing step.
An automatically created routine is unexpected
Find the labeled entry in Your Routines, then edit, deactivate, or delete it. If you do not want Frustration-Free Automation to create future routines, use the control Amazon provides in Manage Your Content & Devices.
A skill-created routine cannot be changed by the skill
Use the Alexa app to edit or remove it. Amazon says a skill that creates a routine cannot later edit or cancel that routine for the customer.
Plan routines safely and reliably
- Use one clear trigger per routine when possible; split unrelated automations so a failure is easier to diagnose.
- Give routines short, distinctive voice phrases that are unlikely to be spoken accidentally.
- Use explicit room and device names, especially when several lights or speakers are present.
- Test a new routine while you are home before attaching it to a lock, alarm, heating system, or other consequential device.
- Review routines after replacing a device, changing a Wi-Fi network, removing a skill, or changing household profiles.
- For presence and camera features, tell household members what detection is enabled and where the Echo Show is located.
- Keep security arming routines separate from actions that should never occur automatically, remembering that Alexa routines can arm a supported system but cannot disarm it.
- Use deactivation for temporary changes and deletion only when the automation is no longer needed.
The most dependable starting point is a simple voice or time routine with one action. Add connected devices, conditions, delays, and identity-based triggers only after the basic event-and-action sequence works.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a smart-home device to create an Alexa routine?
No. Voice-only, time-based, briefing, music, skill, and similar routines can be created in the Alexa app without buying a smart-home product. You need a compatible connected device only when the routine must control that device or use its event.
How many Alexa routines can one account have?
Amazon states that an account can contain up to 200 routines. Amazon does not provide a publication year for that limit on the relevant help page.
Where do I edit or turn off an Alexa routine?
Open the Alexa app, select More, then Routines. Choose the routine to edit it, or use the control shown in the list or detail view to deactivate it. The same area provides the delete control.
Why can’t I see a Visual ID presence trigger?
Visual ID Personal Presence Routines require a supported Echo Show and a configured Visual ID profile. Amazon lists Echo Show 8 (2nd Generation and newer), Echo Show 10, Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21. If the hardware or profile is missing, the option may not appear.
Can an Alexa routine disarm my security system?
Amazon says a routine can arm a supported connected home-security system but cannot disarm it. Treat disarming as a deliberate manual or separately authenticated action.
What Wi-Fi band do most Alexa smart-home devices use?
Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on the 2.4 GHz band. Check the product’s requirements and the network used during pairing if discovery fails.
What is the difference between Visual ID and Echo Show camera detection?
Visual ID uses a configured profile to recognize a person on supported Echo Show hardware. Echo Show Home Monitoring camera detection is a separate nearby-person trigger and does not establish that person’s identity. Amazon says camera-view processing for that presence detection occurs on the Echo Show and sends no video or images to the cloud for that detection.
