To set up the WH-1000XM5, charge it, turn it on near your phone or computer, choose WH-1000XM5 in Bluetooth settings, and install Sony’s companion app. The app (now called Sony | Sound Connect) handles updates, sound controls, battery information, multipoint and Speak-to-Chat. This guide covers first pairing, adding devices, two-device use, practical sound settings and fixes for pairing or missing audio.
Prepare the headset and source device
Give the headset enough charge to remain on during setup. Turn on Bluetooth on the phone, tablet or computer you want to use, and keep that device within 1 metre (about 3 feet) of the headset. Sony specifies this distance for pairing reliability. Close any Bluetooth screen that is actively trying to connect to a different headset so the correct device is easy to identify.

- Have the source device unlocked and its Bluetooth settings open.
- Keep the headset and source device close together until pairing is complete.
- If the headset has previously been paired with another device, be ready to select it from that device’s saved Bluetooth list or to remove the old entry if reconnection fails.
The WH-1000XM5 can retain pairing information for up to eight devices, but it plays audio from one paired device at a time unless you enable its two-device multipoint function.

Pair the WH-1000XM5 for the first time
Automatic pairing after purchase
- Turn on the headphones for their first use. Sony says they enter Bluetooth pairing mode automatically.
- On the phone or computer, open Bluetooth settings and select WH-1000XM5 from the available devices.
- Wait for the connection confirmation. The headset may provide a voice prompt such as “Pairing” while it is waiting.
Pairing mode ends if the process is not completed within five minutes. If the headset disappears from the list, turn it off and on again, then repeat the search with the devices still within 1 metre.

Follow Sony’s model-specific instructions for the exact sequence and status prompts in the WH-1000XM5 pairing guide.
Add another phone, tablet or computer
- With the headset powered on, press and hold the power button for about five seconds.
- Release it when pairing mode starts and the headset indicates that it is ready to pair.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the new source and choose WH-1000XM5.
The five-second hold is for entering pairing mode after the initial setup; it does not erase the devices already stored. If you are adding a device while another one is connected, temporarily pause playback on the connected source so you can hear the status prompt and avoid confusing an existing connection with the new pairing.
Understand the stored-device limit
Sony says the headset can remember up to eight paired devices. That is a list of saved relationships, not eight active audio streams. The headphones normally play from one paired source at a time. If you have reached the practical limit and an old device keeps reappearing, remove the WH-1000XM5 entry from that device’s Bluetooth settings before pairing a new source. Forgetting an entry on a source prevents that source from attempting an unwanted reconnection; it does not replace the deliberate five-second pairing-mode procedure on the headset.
Install and configure Sony Sound Connect
Install Sony’s current companion app, then check both the app and the headset for available updates. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 guide notes that the app name changed in October 2024: “From October 2024, the ‘Sony | Headphones Connect’ app was launched as the ‘Sony | Sound Connect’ app with a new name and new screen.” Model-specific Sony pages may still show the former name, so search your device’s app store for the current Sony app if the older wording appears.
The app’s screens can change, so use the labels shown in your installed version rather than relying on an old screenshot. Sony documents these capabilities for the WH-1000XM5:
- Headset software updates and voice guidance settings.
- Remaining battery information.
- Equalizer controls and DSEE Extreme sound processing.
- Ambient sound and noise-canceling controls.
- Adaptive Sound Control.
- Connect to 2 devices simultaneously (multipoint).
- Speak-to-Chat activation, sensitivity and ending delay.
Open the app after the initial Bluetooth pairing and allow it to connect to the headset. If the app cannot find the headphones, first confirm that the operating system’s Bluetooth page shows the WH-1000XM5 as connected; then close and reopen the app. Sony’s app capability guide and the WH-1000XM5 Quick Start Guide list the functions supported by this model.
Use the app in a deliberate order
After the app recognizes the headset, note the battery level and install offered software updates before creating sound profiles. Updating first avoids troubleshooting a setting that may move or change after a firmware update. During an update, keep the headphones near the phone and avoid switching them off. Once the update is complete, test ordinary playback before enabling multipoint or Speak-to-Chat. This sequence gives you a known-good baseline.

Voice guidance is separate from music volume and can be adjusted in the app. If you hear status prompts while pairing or toggling features, that is useful confirmation that the headset received the command. The app’s battery display is also a practical check before travel, meetings or a long listening session.

Choose sound and listening behavior in the app
Noise canceling, ambient sound and adaptive control
Use the app’s ambient-sound and noise-canceling controls to decide how much of your surroundings reaches you. Adaptive Sound Control can adjust listening behavior according to the app’s available activity or location settings. Because menu names and placement can change with app updates, look for the current sound-control screen rather than a fixed sequence of taps.
There is no single correct setting for every situation. A fixed noise-canceling or ambient profile is simpler when you want predictable behavior. Adaptive control is more convenient when you want the headset to change behavior automatically, but check its current app settings so you understand which activity or location rules are active.
Equalizer and DSEE Extreme
The equalizer is useful when you want to emphasize or reduce particular parts of the sound instead of changing the source device’s system-wide output. Make one change at a time and listen to familiar material before saving a profile. DSEE Extreme is another app-controlled option listed by Sony for this model; whether you prefer it depends on the source material and your listening priorities, so treat it as a setting to compare rather than a requirement for setup.

If a change makes speech, bass or treble less clear, return to the previous profile; the app is intended to let you choose, not require a particular processing mode.
Voice guidance and battery status
The app can expose voice-guidance options and show the headset’s remaining battery. Check the battery screen before a long trip and install firmware updates when the app offers one. Keep the headphones close to the phone during an update and do not interrupt the process by powering them off.
Connect two devices with multipoint
Multipoint keeps two Bluetooth devices connected at the same time. It is intended for switching between sources—such as a computer and a phone—not for mixing or playing two audio streams simultaneously. Sony specifies two simultaneous Bluetooth connections for the WH-1000XM5.
Enable multipoint
- Pair the WH-1000XM5 separately with both source devices.
- Connect the headphones to the device on which Sony Sound Connect is installed.
- In the app, enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously.
- When the app asks you to connect the second device, select that device from its Bluetooth settings.
- Wait until both devices show the headset as connected before starting playback.
These steps follow Sony’s multipoint instructions. The first time you enable the feature, allow extra time for the second Bluetooth connection to complete.

Start audio on one connected device, then stop it before starting audio on the other. If the second source does not take over, stop or close the first source’s playback app completely; a silent or paused connection can still hold the audio focus. Multipoint changes which device supplies audio, but it does not merge both sources or guarantee that every app will release its connection automatically.

For example, stop music on the computer before starting a podcast on the phone. If the phone remains silent, return to the computer and close its media app or disconnect it temporarily, then start the phone’s playback again. This is usually faster than repeatedly deleting and recreating both Bluetooth pairings.
When single-device mode is better
Leave multipoint disabled if you normally use one source and want the least complicated connection behavior. Two-device mode is most useful when you need to move between a computer and a phone without manually disconnecting and reconnecting each time. If troubleshooting becomes difficult, disable multipoint, confirm reliable playback from one device, then enable it again after both pairings are known to work.
The choice is therefore convenience versus simplicity. Multipoint saves reconnection steps, while single-device mode removes a possible source of audio-focus conflicts. Neither mode increases the headset’s stored-device capacity; the eight-device memory and the two-active-connection limit are separate.
Use Speak-to-Chat without unwanted interruptions
Speak-to-Chat detects the wearer’s voice and changes playback so conversation is easier. It is off by default.
Toggle it from the touch panel
- Place two fingers on the headset’s touch panel.
- Touch and hold to toggle Speak-to-Chat.
- Listen for the headset prompt, such as “Speak-to-chat activated,” to confirm the state.
You can also control the feature in Sony Sound Connect. The app provides activation settings, sensitivity and the time before Speak-to-Chat ends after conversation stops. A shorter ending delay returns to playback sooner; a longer delay is less likely to cut off a conversation.
Prevent accidental activation
Vibrations, nearby voices and other sounds can trigger detection. Noisy surroundings can also make voice detection unreliable. If the feature activates while you are walking, travelling or working near other people, lower its sensitivity in the app or turn Speak-to-Chat off. If you want hands-free conversations in a quiet environment, leave it enabled and adjust the ending delay until playback resumes at a comfortable point. Sony describes these limitations in its Speak-to-Chat guide.
Use the two-finger gesture when you need a quick change without opening the app, but verify the voice prompt so you know whether the feature is on or off. If you are hearing frequent interruptions, reducing sensitivity is the middle option: it preserves the convenience of voice detection while reducing reactions to vibrations and other people. Turning the feature off is the predictable choice in a noisy commute or workplace.
Fix pairing and connection problems
The headphones do not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Move the source device within 1 metre of the headset.
- Confirm that the headphones are powered on.
- For a device added after the first one, hold the power button for about five seconds to re-enter pairing mode.
- Search again before the five-minute pairing window expires.
- If the source still cannot find the headset, restart the source device and repeat the search.
If the source has an old WH-1000XM5 entry that will not connect, remove or forget that saved Bluetooth pairing, then pair again as a new device. This clears a stale key rather than merely toggling Bluetooth off and on. Sony’s pairing troubleshooting guide covers this recovery sequence.

Do not start by deleting every saved device. First check proximity, power and pairing mode. Removing one stale entry is less disruptive when other phones, tablets or computers still connect correctly.
The headset connects, then drops
- Keep the source and headset close while testing.
- Check whether another previously paired device is attempting to reconnect. Disconnect it temporarily.
- If multipoint is enabled, turn it off and test one source at a time.
- Restart the source device, then reconnect from its Bluetooth settings.
Once a single-device connection is stable, pair the second source again and re-enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously if you need multipoint.
Fix “connected but no sound”
Basic checks
- Confirm that the headset is powered on and shown as connected in the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Start playback from an app that contains audio and raise the source volume to an audible level.
- Check the headset’s volume and make sure playback is not paused or muted.
- On a computer, open the system sound settings and explicitly select the WH-1000XM5 as the Bluetooth audio output. A computer can remain connected for calls or control while sending music to its speakers.
These checks distinguish a Bluetooth link from an audio route. A “connected” label confirms a connection but does not prove that the current app is playing or that the operating system selected the headphones for output.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Recover the audio route
With multipoint, stop playback on the first device before starting it on the second. A source app can keep a silent connection open and prevent the other device from taking over. Close that app or disconnect the first source temporarily, then start playback on the device you want to hear.
If there is still no sound, remove the saved WH-1000XM5 pairing from the source device and pair again. This is especially useful after an operating-system update or when the device reports “connected” but never selects the headset as its output. Follow Sony’s no-sound guide together with its pairing troubleshooting steps.
A practical setup sequence for daily use
- Keep one primary phone or computer paired and verify ordinary playback before changing advanced settings.
- Install Sony Sound Connect, check the battery and apply any offered headset software update.
- Set noise canceling, ambient sound, equalizer and DSEE Extreme to your preference, changing one option at a time.
- Enable multipoint only if you regularly switch between two sources; pair both devices first.
- Leave Speak-to-Chat off until you need it, or set its sensitivity and ending delay before relying on it in conversation.
- If a problem appears, return to one source, select the headset explicitly as the audio output, and rebuild the Bluetooth pairing only after the basic connection is confirmed.
This order separates Bluetooth connection problems from app-setting problems. It also keeps the WH-1000XM5’s stored pairings available while you decide which two devices should be active together.
Important limits to remember
- Pairing mode is temporary: Sony says it cancels after five minutes if pairing is not completed.
- Manual pairing mode for an additional device requires about a five-second power-button hold.
- The headset stores pairing information for up to eight devices, but normal playback comes from one device at a time.
- Multipoint connects two devices; it is not simultaneous two-source audio.
- Speak-to-Chat can react to vibrations, other voices or environmental noise, and noisy surroundings can interfere with detection.
- App names, screens and available software options can change, so follow the labels in the current Sony Sound Connect release.
Quick decision guide
| Need | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One regular phone or computer | Keep multipoint off | Fewer connection and audio-focus variables. |
| Frequent computer-to-phone switching | Enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously | Both sources remain connected, so you can switch without a new Bluetooth pairing. |
| Conversation detection in a quiet room | Enable Speak-to-Chat and tune ending delay | Playback can resume automatically after you stop speaking. |
| Frequent false interruptions | Lower Speak-to-Chat sensitivity or disable it | Vibrations, nearby voices and environmental noise can trigger it. |
| Computer says connected but music comes from speakers | Select WH-1000XM5 explicitly as audio output | Bluetooth connection and system audio routing are separate choices. |
Final pre-travel check
Before leaving, confirm the headphones appear as connected, check the battery in Sony Sound Connect, and test a short track. If you use two devices, verify that each is connected and practice stopping playback on one before starting the other. If you rely on Speak-to-Chat, test the touch-panel gesture and listen for its activation prompt. These quick checks expose routing or pairing problems while you still have access to the source device’s Bluetooth settings.

How do I put the WH-1000XM5 into pairing mode again?
With the headphones powered on, press and hold the power button for about five seconds. Then select WH-1000XM5 in the new device’s Bluetooth list. This adds a pairing without intentionally erasing the saved devices.
How many devices can the WH-1000XM5 remember?
Sony says it can retain pairing information for up to eight devices. It normally plays audio from one source at a time unless you enable multipoint, which keeps two devices connected.
What is the current Sony app called?
Sony renamed Sony | Headphones Connect to Sony | Sound Connect in October 2024 and introduced a new screen. Some model-specific help pages may still use the former name, so use the current app-store listing.

Pair the headset with each device, connect it to the device running Sony Sound Connect, enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously in the app, and then connect the second device when prompted. Multipoint supports two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, not mixed audio from both.
Why does audio stay on the first device when I start the second?
Stop playback on the first device before starting the second. If the second source still does not take over, close the first source’s media app or disconnect that source temporarily; a silent connection can retain audio focus.
How do I turn Speak-to-Chat on or off?
Place two fingers on the touch panel and touch and hold. The headset provides a prompt such as Speak-to-chat activated. You can also manage activation, sensitivity and the ending delay in Sony Sound Connect.
Why does Speak-to-Chat activate by itself?
Sony notes that vibrations, nearby voices and other sounds can trigger detection, while noisy surroundings can make voice detection unreliable. Lower sensitivity in the app or disable Speak-to-Chat when you need uninterrupted playback.

Confirm power, Bluetooth connection, active playback and audible volume. On a computer, explicitly choose WH-1000XM5 as the Bluetooth audio output. With multipoint, stop playback on the other device. If necessary, forget the saved pairing and pair again.
The Bottom Line
Start with a close, one-device Bluetooth pairing, then install Sony Sound Connect and update the headset. Add multipoint only after each individual connection works, and treat Speak-to-Chat as an adjustable convenience rather than a set-and-forget feature. When audio is missing, check the selected output and stop the other source before rebuilding the pairing.
