How to Set Up and Customize the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

The fastest, least-error-prone setup is to connect the Galaxy S25 Ultra to Wi‑Fi, decide whether to copy your old phone or start clean, sign in to the accounts you actually need, and configure a secure screen lock before personalizing the Home and Lock screens. For a large migration, Samsung recommends a USB cable; wireless Smart Switch is useful when both phones need to stay on chargers.

Menu names can change with One UI releases, carrier software, and regional models. The paths below describe Samsung’s current Galaxy setup flow, but confirm the software version on your own phone whenever a screen looks different.

Before you turn on the Galaxy S25 Ultra

Have the old phone nearby, unlock it, and charge both devices. You will also need your Wi‑Fi password, the sign-in details for any Google or Samsung account you intend to use, and your SIM or eSIM activation information. Keep the old phone powered on until you have checked that the important data arrived.

The S25 Ultra’s launch specification sheet is a useful planning reference, not a current software description. Samsung’s US sheet, current as of January 22, 2025, lists a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh, a 5,000 mAh typical battery, and 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB storage options. It also lists a 200 MP wide camera, 50 MP ultra-wide camera, and 10 MP and 50 MP telephoto cameras. Storage capacity affects how much local media you can bring over, while the display and cameras do not change the setup procedure.

  • Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
  • Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
  • Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
  • 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
  • Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).

The same launch document states Samsung’s commitment to seven years of operating-system and security updates. That is a stated support commitment, not proof that every carrier or regional variant has received a particular release.

Complete the first-run setup

1. Start the wizard

  1. Press and hold the side button until the Samsung logo appears.
  2. Select your language and region when prompted.
  3. Connect to a trusted Wi‑Fi network. Wi‑Fi lets the phone download updates and makes account sign-in and data transfer more reliable than relying only on mobile data.
  4. Read the displayed terms and permissions, then continue through the on-screen prompts.

If the phone is being activated with a carrier, the wizard may show carrier-specific screens or an eSIM activation step. Those screens vary by provider and model; follow the instructions shown for your subscription rather than trying to force a generic path.

2. Choose between copying data and starting fresh

Samsung’s setup flow offers two legitimate choices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Copy data: use Smart Switch to bring over supported content from an old Android or iOS phone.
  • Set up as new: finish with an empty phone, then install or restore only what you need later.

Choose a clean setup when the old phone is cluttered, unreliable, or being kept as a separate device. Choose migration when you need its messages, photos, contacts, or other supported content immediately. You can use Smart Switch after setup, so selecting “set up as new” does not permanently close the migration option.

3. Sign in to a Google Account

A Google Account is requested during the standard Galaxy setup. Sign in if you want the Google services and account data associated with that address. If you skip it, some Google-dependent functions and app downloads will wait until you add an account later through Settings. The exact prompts depend on the Android build and the services selected during setup.

4. Create a screen lock

The wizard offers face recognition, PIN, pattern, or password. Pick a method you can enter consistently, including when the phone cannot recognize your face or fingerprint. A longer password generally provides more combinations than a short PIN, but the best choice is one you will actually remember and use.

  1. Choose the lock type shown by the wizard.
  2. Enter it twice when asked.
  3. Follow the on-device instructions if you add biometric unlocking.
  4. Store the primary PIN, pattern, or password somewhere secure. Biometrics do not replace the primary credential in every situation, such as after a restart or when the phone requests it for account recovery.

Do not leave the phone without a lock merely to make setup faster. You can change the method later in the Lock screen or security settings, but recovering a forgotten credential may require account verification or a reset.

5. Add a Samsung Account if its features matter to you

The setup wizard can also request a Samsung Account. Add one if you plan to use Samsung services that require it, or skip the prompt and sign in later. Account requirements are feature-dependent, so there is no need to create an account solely because the wizard displays the option.

6. Finish the basic checks

Let the phone complete its initial configuration, then verify that calls, mobile data, Wi‑Fi, and the correct date and time work. If an update is offered, install it before judging the final menu layout; later One UI builds can move or rename settings.

Move data with Smart Switch

Smart Switch supports transfers from most Android and iOS phones. Samsung documents three connection routes, and the items that can move depend on the source device, operating system, and content type. No transfer method guarantees that every app, setting, protected item, or account session will be reproduced.

Method Best use Trade-off
USB cable Large photo, video, message, or app-data migrations Requires a compatible cable and both phones to remain physically connected; Samsung recommends it for a large transfer.
Wireless Convenient transfers when you want both phones free of cables Can take longer for a large library; keep both devices close and connected to chargers.
External storage A transfer staged on supported external storage Requires the appropriate storage and adapter; available content depends on the source and storage format.

Android-to-Galaxy transfer

  1. On the S25 Ultra, open Smart Switch from the setup wizard or later from the Samsung folder or Settings search.
  2. Select the option to receive data, then choose the old phone’s platform.
  3. Choose Wireless or Cable. For a large transfer, use the cable route Samsung recommends.
  4. On the old Android phone, open Smart Switch if prompted, approve the connection, and select the categories you want.
  5. Review the estimated size and available storage on the S25 Ultra. Deselect large items you can retrieve elsewhere if the estimate approaches the phone’s free space.
  6. Start the transfer and leave both phones unlocked, nearby, and powered until the progress screen reports completion.
  7. Open Gallery, Contacts, Messages, and other high-value apps on the new phone to confirm the result before erasing the old device.

iPhone-to-Galaxy transfer

  1. On the S25 Ultra, start Smart Switch and choose to receive data from an iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select the connection method offered for your devices. A cable is usually the practical choice for a large photo or video library; wireless availability and the categories offered can differ.
  3. Follow the prompts on the iPhone and approve any trust or access request.
  4. Select the supported categories to import, start the transfer, and keep both phones connected until it finishes.
  5. Check contacts, photos, calendars, and messages individually. Some iOS app data, protected media, and app-specific credentials cannot be copied and must be set up again.

When Smart Switch does not bring everything over

  • Missing apps: reinstall the Android or Galaxy version from the app store and sign in again. An app’s store listing and data-transfer support determine what can be restored.
  • Missing protected content: banking, password-manager, digital-rights-managed, and other protected data may deliberately require a fresh sign-in or export from the original app.
  • Transfer stops: charge both phones, reduce the distance between them for wireless mode, close heavy background apps, and retry with a cable if the data set is large.
  • Not enough space: stop the transfer, free space on the S25 Ultra, or repeat it by selecting only the categories you need first.
  • Old phone unavailable: choose “set up as new” and restore what your accounts or individual apps provide. Do not claim a complete clone when the source phone cannot participate.

Keep the old phone intact until you have tested the new one. A successful Smart Switch completion message means the selected transfer finished; it is not a guarantee that every application session or protected file is present.

Make the Home screen work for you

Add, remove, and reorder Home screens

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, or pinch inward with two fingers, to enter the Home-screen overview.
  2. Swipe through the page thumbnails. Use the add control to create a page, drag a page to change its order, or remove an unwanted page using the displayed delete control.
  3. Designate the page you want to see when pressing the Home button as the main Home screen using the home icon or the equivalent control shown in the overview.
  4. Press the Home button or swipe up to leave the overview.

Labels differ by One UI release, but the overview is the place to manage pages and select the main screen. If a control is absent, search Settings for “Home screen” and confirm whether a carrier or software update changed the layout.

Place apps and build folders

To add an app shortcut, touch and hold the app and choose Add to Home, or drag it into the desired position. To move an existing shortcut, touch and hold it, then drag it to another location or page. Drag one shortcut over another to create a folder, open the folder, and rename it with a label that describes its contents.

Keep your most-used actions on the first page and group occasional tasks into folders such as Travel, Finance, or Media. Removing a shortcut from the Home screen does not necessarily uninstall the app; use the uninstall command in the long-press menu when you actually want the app removed.

Use the Favorites bar deliberately

The Favorites bar can hold up to five apps. If the Apps screen button is displayed on the Home screen, Samsung’s support guidance says the available capacity is four apps instead. Touch and hold an existing favorite, remove it from the bar, and drag a replacement into the open position. Keep communication, camera, maps, or another daily priority there rather than filling the row with rarely used apps.

Adjust the grid, wallpaper, and widgets

From the Home-screen overview or the Home screen settings page, look for controls for wallpaper, screen layout, and the app or widget grid. A denser grid shows more shortcuts; a looser grid improves readability and touch targets. Touch and hold an empty area, choose the widget picker, then drag a widget onto a page and resize it if the widget supports resizing. If the labels or available grid sizes differ, use the options shown by your current One UI build rather than following a launch-era screenshot.

Lock the arrangement after testing it

Once the pages, folders, widgets, and Favorites bar feel right, enable the Home-screen layout lock in the Home-screen settings. This prevents accidental dragging while still allowing you to unlock the layout whenever you need to reorganize it.

Customize the Lock screen and quick access

Change Lock-screen shortcuts

After a Lock-screen security method is configured, open the Lock screen customization view by touching and holding the Lock screen, then authenticate when asked. Select either shortcut slot and choose another available app or function. An app marked as requiring unlock will still ask for authentication; a shortcut does not bypass the phone’s security policy.

If touch-and-hold customization is disabled or the control is not visible, open Settings and search for “Lock screen.” Samsung changes the exact menu placement across One UI versions and carrier builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select and position Edge panels

Edge panels provide a swipe-in strip for selected tools or app shortcuts. In Settings, search for Edge panels, turn the feature on, and choose the panels you want. The same area lets you adjust the handle’s side, vertical position, size, transparency, and vibration behavior when those controls are available on your build. If the handle interferes with a game or another edge gesture, move it higher or lower rather than disabling the feature entirely.

Set up Always On Display

To find the control, open Settings and search for Always On Display. Samsung’s documentation treats the exact controls as software-sensitive, so your phone may offer different clock, notification, brightness, or schedule choices. Galaxy S25 devices running One UI 7.0 can show Now bar information on the Always On Display; whether that option appears depends on the installed software and supported features.

Choose the display behavior that matches your battery and privacy preferences. A minimal clock and notification view exposes less information than a detailed preview. If Always On Display is missing from search, install available system updates and check again; carrier and regional builds can differ.

Check the software version before following menu instructions

The S25 series launch sheet identifies Android 15 with One UI 7.0 as the launch software. Samsung’s India support listing now includes an English Android 17 manual, version 1.0, dated October 7, 2026, for the SM-S938B listing. That manual date shows that documentation has advanced beyond launch software; it does not prove Android 17 has rolled out to every S25 Ultra, carrier, or country.

  1. Open Settings and use the search field for Software update, or open the Software update section shown on your phone.
  2. Choose the command to check for or download updates.
  3. Install only when the phone has sufficient battery and a reliable connection, then restart if prompted.
  4. After updating, recheck Home screen, Lock screen, Edge panels, and Always On Display settings because labels and locations can move.

Record the Android version, One UI version, model number, carrier, and security-patch date from the About phone and software-information screens when requesting help. Those details explain why another S25 Ultra owner may see a different menu.

Post-setup verification checklist

  • Make and receive a call; test mobile data away from Wi‑Fi.
  • Confirm the correct Google and Samsung accounts are listed in Settings.
  • Lock and unlock the phone with the primary credential, then test any enabled biometrics.
  • Open Contacts, Messages, Gallery, Calendar, and the apps you use for work or payments.
  • Check that the imported photos and videos are present before deleting the old phone.
  • Verify the Home-screen main page, Favorites bar, folders, widgets, and layout lock.
  • Test Lock-screen shortcuts and confirm that protected apps still request authentication.
  • Review Always On Display and Edge-panel behavior in a dark room and in bright light.
  • Install available software updates and note the resulting Android and One UI versions.
