For a reliable first print on the Creality K1 Max, install the current firmware and slicer, seat and clean the magnetic build plate, run the printer’s complete self-check, load PLA with its exact material profile, and verify the first layer before letting the model continue. The K1 Max builds an automatic leveling mesh with strain sensors, but that system cannot compensate for a dirty or badly seated plate, an incorrect profile, or poor filament loading.

What to do before switching on the K1 Max

Put the printer on a stable, level surface with enough clearance for the door, top cover, spool path, and ventilation. Remove all shipping restraints and packaging, then inspect the machine for loose parts or debris. The magnetic build plate must be present, fully seated on the heated bed, and flat. Any tape, foam, fingerprints, or packing material between the plate and bed can alter the leveling result.

  • Check that the magnetic plate is the correct plate for the K1 Max and that its surface is clean.
  • Make sure the print head and bed can move without contacting packaging or tools.
  • Confirm that the power cable is firmly inserted and that the mains voltage matches your region.
  • Keep hands away from the nozzle and bed during heating; both become hot enough to burn skin.

Creality’s support guidance summarizes the essentials: use the heated bed and magnetic plate, ensure proper leveling, and choose the correct print settings for the filament.

Install current software and firmware

Before calibration, open Creality’s K1 Max download center and obtain the current firmware, Creality Print, and the K1 Max User Manual. The versions visible when this guide was researched were Creality Print V7.3.0.6157, dated October 9, 2026, and firmware V1.1.0.27, dated March 11, 2026. These labels are volatile; check the download center again immediately before updating because Creality can replace both files.

Update safely

  1. Install the current Creality Print release on your computer.
  2. Read the K1 Max manual’s update instructions and copy the firmware using the supported method shown there.
  3. Start the update with the printer connected to stable power. Do not switch it off while the update is being written.
  4. After the printer restarts, check the firmware version in the printer’s information or settings screen.

If the printer offers an update through its network interface, follow the on-screen procedure rather than mixing files from another K1-series model. Firmware, slicer menus, and profile names can change, so use the labels shown on your current machine.

Connect the printer to Creality Print

The K1 Max supports USB transfer, LAN, RJ45 Ethernet, and Creality Cloud connectivity. Pick one route for the first print and verify that the printer is visible in Creality Print before slicing.

USB

USB is useful when the printer is not allowed on your network. Export the sliced file to the supported USB storage device, insert it into the printer, and start the job from the printer’s file list. Confirm that the selected file is the one you just exported.

LAN or RJ45

For a local network workflow, connect the printer by Wi-Fi or RJ45 Ethernet as supported by your setup, then add or select the discovered K1 Max in Creality Print. LAN printing keeps the file transfer inside your network; Ethernet can be preferable where a wired connection is more stable.

Creality Cloud

Creality Cloud can provide remote transfer or monitoring when configured on the printer and in the account. Treat remote monitoring as a convenience, not a substitute for checking the first layer in person. A camera view cannot detect every nozzle scrape, partial clog, or loose plate.

Run the complete self-check

On the printer, open Settings > Self-check. The K1 Max’s self-check covers nozzle heating, hotbed heating, the heat-break cooling fan, the mainboard fan, Input Shaping, and Auto Leveling. The user manual’s safety instruction is explicit: “Do not touch the printer during the self-check.”

  1. Remove tools, fingers, and loose filament from the motion area.
  2. Open Settings > Self-check and select every available check.
  3. Start the routine and watch only from outside the moving and heated areas.
  4. Wait for the routine to finish and read any warning before attempting a print.

After a firmware update, Creality specifically instructs users to tick Input Shaping and Auto Bed Leveling and start the self-check. Run those items again if you update firmware later or move the printer to a substantially different surface.

How automatic leveling works—and what it does not fix

Strain sensors in the heatbed measure the surface and generate an automatic leveling mesh. During printing, the machine uses that mesh to compensate for small height differences. This is why you normally do not need to turn hand-adjustment screws for every job.

Automatic leveling is not a permission to ignore the plate. The mesh cannot reliably correct a plate that is not magnetically seated, a surface contaminated with grease, a nozzle carrying a blob of plastic, or a slicer profile with an unsuitable first-layer height or temperature. Keep the plate clean, install it flat, and let the current self-check complete before judging the result.

Start with PLA and the right profile

Creality lists PLA, PETG, PET, TPU, PA, ABS, ASA, and PC as supported materials. PLA is the least demanding starting point for most beginners because it generally needs less demanding chamber and temperature conditions than the other supported choices.

Use the exact PLA profile supplied by Creality Print or by the filament manufacturer. Do not copy a temperature from a different brand, color, material, or printer. A profile is a coordinated set of nozzle temperature, bed temperature, cooling, speed, extrusion, and first-layer settings; changing only one number can create a new failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The K1 Max has a maximum nozzle temperature of 300 °C and a maximum heated-bed temperature of 120 °C. Those are machine limits, not recommended first-print settings. Your filament profile should remain below those limits and should be the authority for the material you actually loaded.

What changes when you leave PLA?

  • PETG: Supported, but it can be more sensitive to first-layer adhesion and stringing. Use the current PETG profile instead of a PLA profile.
  • TPU: Supported flexible filament. Follow the profile’s loading and speed guidance carefully; forcing flexible filament through an unsuitable path can interrupt extrusion.
  • ABS and ASA: Supported engineering materials that generally demand more controlled printing conditions than PLA. Use the dedicated profile and follow its enclosure and ventilation guidance.
  • PA and PC: Supported materials with more demanding temperature and moisture requirements. Use only a profile intended for the exact material and keep filament handling instructions in view.
  • PET: Supported. Select its dedicated profile rather than assuming PETG settings will transfer.

Check calibration controls in the slicer

Creality’s K1-series parameter guidance documents automatic bed leveling, flow-rate calibration, and first-layer detection. Flow-rate calibration and first-layer detection may be disabled by default, so inspect the calibration section before slicing rather than assuming they are active.

Calibration controls to verify

  • Automatic bed leveling: Leave it enabled for the initial setup unless a specific, documented workflow tells you otherwise.
  • Flow-rate calibration: Check whether the profile enables it. Flow rate affects line width and can make a first layer look too thin or overfilled.
  • First-layer detection: Check its status before slicing. If enabled, understand what action the printer will take when it detects a problem.
  • Material profile: Confirm the selected profile matches the loaded filament’s material and manufacturer guidance.

Choose a slicer for the first job

Creality lists Creality Print, Ultimaker Cura, and Simplify3D as compatible slicers. For a first K1 Max setup, Creality Print is the most direct path because the published K1-series parameter guidance is written around it.

Slicer What the official information establishes What to check before printing
Creality Print Compatible with the K1 Max; the K1-series parameter guidance covers automatic bed leveling, flow-rate calibration, and first-layer detection. Profile freshness, calibration toggles, and the selected connection method.
Ultimaker Cura Listed by Creality as a compatible slicer. Use a current K1 Max profile and verify machine limits, leveling commands, material settings, and file transfer.
Simplify3D Listed by Creality as a compatible slicer. Use a current K1 Max profile and verify machine limits, leveling commands, material settings, and file transfer.

Whichever slicer you use, a current profile and a clear recovery path matter more than the brand of slicer. For the first layer, choose the workflow in which you can quickly change the material profile, reslice, and resend the file.

Load filament without introducing a feed problem

  1. Mount the PLA spool so filament unwinds smoothly without rubbing the frame or snagging on the spool holder.
  2. Cut the filament tip cleanly and straighten the first section.
  3. Use the printer’s loading procedure and wait until the nozzle is hot enough for the selected material before forcing filament through.
  4. Extrude enough material to replace the old filament and confirm that the strand exits continuously rather than in spurts.
  5. Remove any purge strand from the plate before starting the model.

If extrusion is intermittent, do not compensate by increasing temperature at random. Verify the material profile, check that the filament path is unobstructed, and rerun the relevant self-check before printing.

Slice a conservative first model

For the first attempt, use a small, uncomplicated PLA model or a dedicated first-layer test. A simple shape makes it easier to distinguish a setup problem from a model or support problem.

  1. Select the K1 Max as the active printer in the slicer.
  2. Select the exact PLA profile for the filament loaded.
  3. Confirm automatic bed leveling and inspect the flow-rate and first-layer detection settings.
  4. Slice the model and review the first layer in the preview. Look for gaps, excessive overlap, or an unexpectedly large first-layer footprint.
  5. Send the file by USB, LAN, RJ45-connected network, or Creality Cloud, depending on the connection you verified earlier.
  6. Stay with the printer for the skirt, brim, or first solid lines.

The first lines should be continuous and evenly attached. Stop the job immediately if the nozzle scrapes the plate, filament curls up around the nozzle, or extrusion is intermittent.

First-layer troubleshooting

Filament does not stick

  • Stop the print and let the bed cool enough to handle safely.
  • Clean the magnetic plate and let it dry completely. Skin oils and residue reduce adhesion.
  • Reseat the plate so it lies flat and is fully captured by the magnetic surface.
  • Confirm that automatic leveling ran and that the correct material profile is selected.
  • Retry with the same simple model before changing several variables at once.

Creality’s troubleshooting guidance links adhesion and warping problems to plate condition, leveling, and correct material settings. Its examples give upper bounds of 50 °C for a PLA bed and 70 °C for a PETG bed. These are troubleshooting guidance examples, not universal presets; follow the current filament profile first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The nozzle scrapes the plate

  • Stop the job rather than allowing the nozzle to drag across the surface.
  • Check that the plate is seated flat and free of debris.
  • Remove any plastic stuck to the nozzle tip.
  • Run the complete self-check, including Auto Leveling, and retry the first-layer test.
  • Confirm that the slicer is using the K1 Max profile and has not imported a start-gcode routine for another printer.

Lines are thin, broken, or inconsistent

  • Check that the filament is actually loaded and that the tip exits the nozzle continuously during a manual extrusion.
  • Verify the material profile and inspect whether flow-rate calibration is disabled.
  • Look for a partial clog or a damaged nozzle if the problem persists across a clean, correctly profiled filament.
  • For abrasive materials, use a nozzle intended for that material and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.

The first layer is too wide or creates ridges

Do not immediately raise or lower temperatures beyond the profile’s range. First confirm that the plate is level, the profile matches the filament, and the first-layer and flow settings have not been altered. A flow-rate calibration can be useful when the profile is correct but extrusion is consistently over- or under-filled.

When to recalibrate

Run the leveling and input-shaping portions of the self-check after a firmware update, after moving the printer, or when first-layer behavior changes without a slicer change. Recalibrate rather than repeatedly editing temperatures when the plate has been reseated, the nozzle has been replaced, or the printer has experienced a collision.

Keep a simple record of the filament profile, plate-cleaning method, and result of each first-layer test. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify whether the cause is adhesion, leveling, flow, or material selection.

Maintenance items that affect calibration

A clean plate and clean nozzle are calibration components, not cosmetic details. Before each important job, inspect the plate for residue and the nozzle for a hanging blob. Replace a worn or damaged nozzle with a K1 Max replacement nozzle appropriate to the material you print. Abrasive filaments can wear standard nozzles faster, so watch for increasingly inconsistent line width and update the nozzle when inspection shows wear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep filament dry according to its material requirements, especially for PA, PC, PETG, and other moisture-sensitive choices. Moisture-related popping and inconsistent extrusion can look like a leveling fault even when the bed mesh is correct.

A repeatable first-print checklist

  • Shipping restraints and debris removed.
  • Magnetic build plate present, clean, and seated flat.
  • Current K1 Max firmware and Creality Print installed.
  • Printer visible through the selected USB, LAN, RJ45, or Creality Cloud workflow.
  • Settings > Self-check completed without touching the printer.
  • Input Shaping and Auto Bed Leveling selected after a firmware update.
  • PLA loaded and extruding continuously.
  • Exact filament profile selected; machine limits not treated as target temperatures.
  • Flow-rate calibration and first-layer detection settings inspected.
  • Small model or first-layer test sliced and previewed.
  • First lines watched in person until adhesion is even.

Once this sequence succeeds, save the working printer and filament profile. Future materials can then be introduced one at a time, with their own profile and first-layer check.
