Prepare a clear profile image and a banner with essential text inside YouTube’s safe area, complete the channel profile, publish the changes, and check how the result looks on different screens.
1. Choose the account and channel type
A Google Account lets you watch, like, and subscribe. You need a YouTube channel to upload videos, comment, or create playlists. YouTube describes a personal channel as one only its creator can manage. A channel using a business or other name can have more than one owner or manager and may be associated with a Brand Account. Choose the latter arrangement if the channel needs a name distinct from your Google Account or will be managed by other people. YouTube notes that supervised experiences may not allow channel creation. See YouTube’s channel-creation guidance.
2. Create the channel
- Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account you intend to use.
- Open your account’s channel-management settings and choose the option to create a channel.
- Enter the channel name and handle, and add a profile picture if you are ready. You can refine the branding later in YouTube Studio.
- Complete the creation flow and open YouTube Studio. Menu names and locations can vary by device; if the steps do not match your screen, use YouTube’s current instructions.
3. Set the channel’s profile in YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, open Customization, then select Profile. This is where you can add or change the profile picture, banner, video watermark, channel name, handle, description, translations, and links. Add a contact address if viewers or business contacts need a way to reach you. YouTube’s controls and available fields are described in its channel customization guide and profile guide.
Choose a name and handle people can recognize
Use a channel name that makes the creator, organization, or subject clear, and a handle that is easy to associate with it. YouTube defines a handle as “a unique identifier that makes it easier for you to establish and maintain your distinct presence on YouTube.” A handle helps distinguish the channel; it is not a substitute for a descriptive channel name.

YouTube currently allows a channel name to be changed twice within a 14-day period, and the handle has the same change limit. A name change may take a few days to appear across YouTube, and changing a channel name removes its verification badge. Check the current profile instructions before making a change you need to take effect quickly.
Write a useful description and add relevant links
Explain what viewers will find on the channel in concise, specific language. YouTube supports translations for the channel name and description and allows up to 14 profile links. The first link is displayed prominently near the Subscribe button; viewers open the full list to see the others. Prioritize the destination most useful to a new visitor, and include only relevant links that comply with YouTube’s external links policy.

4. Prepare a profile picture and banner
Choose visuals that are legible at small sizes and feel like they belong together. YouTube recommends consistent channel visuals; this is presentation guidance, not a promise of more views or subscribers. You do not need a particular design app. YouTube calls Canva a popular banner-making resource, but any tool that produces an image matching the specifications works.

Profile picture
Use a square or round image that remains recognizable when displayed small. YouTube’s branding instructions list JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG formats, a maximum file size of 15 MB, and a rendered image size of 98 × 98 pixels. Animated GIFs are not supported. Because the image may appear in compact placements, avoid small text and fine detail. Check YouTube’s branding specifications.
Banner
The banner is cropped differently on computer, mobile, and TV. YouTube’s banner tips recommend an image of at least 2560 × 1440 pixels, while its detailed branding instructions specify a minimum upload size of 2048 × 1152 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a 6 MB maximum file size. At the minimum size, keep essential text and logos within the 1235 × 338-pixel safe area. A larger recommended canvas does not eliminate cropping, so preview the image on different screens before settling on it.
Give the banner one clear job: reinforce the channel identity, communicate its subject, or show a useful detail such as an upload schedule. Check that the profile picture and banner are visually consistent without relying on the banner for information that would be lost outside the safe area. Optional video watermark
A watermark can appear throughout a video, from a custom start time, or during its last 15 seconds. YouTube’s guidance calls for a square image of at least 150 × 150 pixels and a file under 1 MB. Watermarks are unavailable on videos set as Made for Kids, are not clickable on mobile, and do not appear in custom YouTube chromeless players or Adobe Flash. Add one only if it remains clear at its displayed size and fits your channel identity. Review the watermark rules.

5. Organize the Home tab
In YouTube Studio, go to Customization and open Home tab. You can set a channel trailer for people who have not subscribed, choose a featured video, and arrange sections to help visitors browse the channel’s formats. Use sections to make different kinds of content easier to find, rather than treating the Home tab as a substitute for clear titles and thumbnails. These are presentation and organization controls; YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a particular layout increases views or subscribers. See the Home tab controls.
6. Publish and check the channel
- In Customization, review the profile fields and Home tab layout, then select the available publish or save control.
- Open the public channel page and check that the name, handle, description, first link, profile picture, and banner appear as intended.
- Review the banner on more than one screen size. Confirm that text and logos remain within the safe area and that the crop does not hide the channel identity.
- Check the Home tab as a first-time visitor: the trailer, featured video, and sections should make it easy to understand what the channel contains.
