To activate a Maya Mobile eSIM, buy a plan for the country or region you will visit, retrieve its QR code or manual activation details, install the eSIM while connected to the internet, and then select it for mobile data with data roaming enabled. You can install the eSIM before departure; it normally will not connect until you are physically inside the plan’s covered destination.
The installation profile and the network connection are separate steps. If the profile is present but data does not work, check the destination, line selection, roaming setting, and (on Android when needed) the APN before trying more disruptive fixes.

Before you install the eSIM
Have these items ready:
- An eSIM-compatible phone. The exact menus depend on the phone model, operating-system version, and region.
- A Maya Mobile data package that covers the destination where you intend to use it.
- Internet access during installation. Wi-Fi is the safest choice because the phone must contact the eSIM service to verify and download the profile.
- Access to the Maya Mobile account or the email address used for the order.
- The phone’s screen lock or other security verification, if the device requests it while adding a cellular plan.
Do not repeatedly scan the QR code before checking whether the plan is already installed. Open the phone’s cellular or SIM settings and look for a newly added line first. A second scan can fail simply because the profile has already been downloaded.

Maya Mobile’s quick-start guide, published January 27, 2025, says the QR email usually arrives within five minutes of purchase. That is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed delivery time. If it is not in the inbox, check spam or promotional folders and open the order in your Maya account.

Find the QR code or manual activation details
The account is the authoritative place to retrieve installation credentials after purchase.
- Sign in to your Maya Mobile account.
- Open the order or eSIM that matches the destination package.
- Open the eSIM’s installation or manage controls.
- Select the Installation tab. Maya lists the QR code and the manual activation code there, according to its June 26, 2025 support instructions.
Many iPhones show a one-tap installation action in the account or order page. Use it when it is offered and the page is open on the iPhone. Otherwise, display the QR code on another screen, such as a computer or a second phone, so the travel phone’s camera can scan it. A screenshot or printed copy can also work if the code remains sharp and fully visible, but the account is preferable because it also exposes the manual details if scanning fails.
Choose an installation method

Do not confuse the activation code with a phone unlock code or a confirmation code. On the documented iPhone manual flow, Maya says no confirmation code is required.

Apple changes labels slightly between iOS releases and regions. You may see Cellular, Mobile, or Mobile Service, but the sequence is materially the same.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or another working internet connection.
- Open the Maya installation page on another screen and display the QR code, or open the Maya page on the iPhone and choose its one-tap installation option if shown.
- For a QR installation, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile/Mobile Service) and choose Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan. Choose the option to use a QR code and scan the code.
- Accept the prompts to download and add the plan. Keep the phone connected until the installation completes.
- When iOS asks you to label the lines, give the Maya line a recognizable label such as “Travel data.” Keep your primary line available if you still need its voice calls or SMS.
- When iOS asks which line should provide mobile data, select the Maya line for the trip. Leave the primary line selected for calls and messages if that is your intention.
- Open the Maya line’s settings and turn on Data Roaming. The travel plan may need roaming enabled to connect to its partner network.
After the plan is added, confirm that the Maya line itself is turned on. An installed but disabled line cannot provide data, even when the QR installation succeeded.

Enter the activation details manually on an iPhone
Use this route when the QR code cannot be displayed separately or the camera will not recognize it.
- Sign in to the Maya account on any device and open the relevant eSIM’s Installation tab.
- Copy the SM-DP+ address and the activation code exactly as displayed. Do not add spaces or change punctuation.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile/Mobile Service).
- Tap Add eSIM, then choose Enter Details Manually.
- Enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code in their matching fields. Maya’s documented procedure does not require a confirmation code.
- Continue through the prompts, label the line, select the line for mobile data, and enable Data Roaming on that Maya line.
These labels describe Apple’s documented flow and can move when iOS changes. If you do not see the exact wording, look for the equivalent option under the iPhone’s cellular-plan settings rather than entering the code in a Wi-Fi or password field.

Install on Android with a QR code
Android manufacturers place eSIM controls in different locations. Maya’s quick-start procedure is to use the camera or the phone’s SIM-download option, scan the QR code, and then enable data roaming.
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi or another active internet connection.
- Display the Maya QR code on a different screen.
- Open the phone’s SIM or network settings and choose the option to add, download, or activate an eSIM. On some phones, the camera can scan the QR directly and then open the same setup flow.
- Scan the code and approve the prompts to download the mobile plan.
- When Android asks for a preferred data SIM, select the Maya line for mobile data.
- Open the Maya line’s settings, make sure the line is enabled, and turn on Data Roaming.
Samsung and other Android phones may use labels such as SIM manager, Mobile network, or Download a SIM instead. The principle is the same, but do not assume a Pixel menu path will appear unchanged on another manufacturer’s phone.
Enter the code manually on Android 13 and Google Pixel
Maya’s manual-activation article gives a specific route for Android 13 on Google Pixel. Treat it as a Pixel example, not a universal Android path.

- Open Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs.
- Choose the option to add or download a SIM.
- At the QR help screen, choose the option for manual entry instead of scanning.
- Enter the activation information shown in the Maya account’s Installation tab.
- Approve the download and wait for Android to finish adding the plan.
- Set the Maya eSIM as the mobile-data SIM, enable the line, and turn on Data Roaming for it.
If your Android phone uses different labels, search its Settings for “eSIM,” “download SIM,” or “SIM manager.” Do not paste the SM-DP+ address into an APN field; it belongs in the eSIM-download screen.

Dual-SIM phones can have both the home SIM and Maya eSIM installed at the same time. Installation does not automatically guarantee that the phone will use Maya for data.
- Mobile-data line: Set Maya as the line used for cellular data. If the home SIM remains selected, the phone can show signal while all data is billed through the home carrier.
- Maya roaming: Enable Data Roaming on the Maya line. Travel eSIMs commonly connect through partner networks, and Maya’s instructions require this setting for service.
- Home-SIM roaming: Turn Data Roaming off on the home SIM if you want to avoid potential home-carrier roaming charges. Keep the home line enabled only for the calls or texts you still need, and check your carrier’s own roaming terms.
- Automatic data switching: If the phone offers a setting that automatically switches data between SIMs, disable it for the trip unless you deliberately want that fallback behavior.
The exact switches differ by iOS and Android version. Recheck them after restarting the phone because a system update or SIM change can restore a different default data line.
Can you install the eSIM before traveling?
Yes. Installing the profile at home is often the practical approach because you can use reliable Wi-Fi and access your Maya account without depending on airport connectivity.
Installation and service availability are separate. A Maya eSIM will not connect to a network until the phone is in the destination covered by the purchased package. A country plan, for example, is intended to connect in that country, not everywhere the phone can find a roaming signal.

After you arrive, make sure the Maya line is on, selected for data, and configured for roaming. Maya’s January 27, 2025 guidance says a data connection is usually available immediately after activation, but carrier and environmental conditions can make it take up to 15 minutes. That is documented support guidance rather than a service-level guarantee.

Work through these checks in order. They address the most common configuration errors without deleting the installed profile.
1. Confirm the physical destination
Check that you are actually in a country or region covered by the package you purchased. If you are still at home, in transit, or outside the plan’s listed territory, the eSIM can be installed correctly and still show no service.
2. Verify the Maya line and mobile-data selection
Open the phone’s SIM or cellular settings. Confirm that the Maya eSIM is enabled and that it is the selected line for mobile data. A phone can display the eSIM in its list while continuing to route data through the primary SIM.
3. Check roaming on the right line
Data Roaming must be on for Maya. If the phone has two lines, make sure you changed the Maya switch, not only the home SIM’s switch. Keep roaming off on the home SIM when avoiding home-carrier roaming charges is important.
4. Check the APN on Android if data still does not start
Maya’s troubleshooting guide specifies an Android APN value of globaldata. In the Android mobile-network settings, create or select an APN with that value. If the APN form contains username or password values, remove them and leave both fields empty. This instruction is Android-specific; do not apply it to an iPhone, which does not use this Android APN procedure.
5. Refresh the radio connection
- Turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds.
- Turn Airplane Mode off.
- Leave the phone in an area with a usable signal and allow up to 15 minutes for network authentication.
This refreshes the cellular registration without removing the eSIM profile.
6. Try manual network selection on an iPhone
If an iPhone still cannot register, open the Maya line’s network-selection settings, turn off automatic selection, and choose an available network manually. Maya documents this as a troubleshooting step for finding a partner network. Once one connects successfully, return network selection to Automatic so the phone can choose an appropriate network as you move.
7. Do not delete the eSIM as an early fix
Maya explicitly warns against deleting an installed eSIM during initial troubleshooting. Removing it can leave you without the profile and force you to retrieve installation details again. Escalate to Maya support after checking coverage, line selection, roaming, the Android APN where applicable, Airplane Mode, and network selection.
Fix an “Unsupported eSIM” or carrier-lock message on iPhone
If the iPhone says an eSIM is unsupported or that a plan from the carrier cannot be added, check whether the phone is locked to its original carrier:
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
- Look for No SIM restrictions.
Maya’s April 17, 2026 support explanation treats “No SIM restrictions” as the unlocked status. If another restriction is shown, contact the original carrier about unlocking before treating the Maya profile as defective. This check addresses the carrier-lock condition described by Maya; it is not a diagnosis for every eSIM error message.
Final activation checklist
- The package covers the country or region where you are using the phone.
- The eSIM appears in the phone’s cellular or SIM list.
- The Maya line is enabled.
- Maya is selected as the mobile-data line.
- Data Roaming is enabled on Maya.
- Data Roaming is disabled on the home SIM if you are avoiding home-carrier roaming charges.
- On Android, the APN is checked and set to
globaldatawith blank username and password fields when Maya’s troubleshooting step applies. - Airplane Mode has been toggled for 30 seconds if registration was delayed.
- You have allowed the documented connection window before changing more settings.
Once these items are correct and the phone is inside the plan’s destination, the Maya eSIM should be ready to provide mobile data. If it still cannot connect, leave the profile installed and contact Maya support with the phone model, operating-system version, destination, package, and the exact error shown.
