Before sending XRP, check the network’s current reserve requirements. A wallet does not make transactions reversible: anyone with the signing secret can authorize transactions, and an applied transaction cannot be undone by an administrator.
Understand what an XRP Ledger wallet controls
XRP is recorded on the XRP Ledger; a wallet is software or a service that lets you access an account and authorize transactions. The key question is who controls the signing keys and who is responsible for recovering access if something goes wrong.

Set up the wallet without exposing your recovery secret
- Choose a custody model before moving funds. Decide whether you want a provider to manage keys or want to hold the signing secret yourself. Understand how account access and recovery work for the specific service or wallet.
- Find the wallet’s official source independently. Download software or open a service using its verified official website or app listing. Do not use links sent by strangers. Wallet software and its dependencies can introduce supply-chain risk, as the XRP Ledger notes in its wallet guidance.
- Create or restore an account only through the wallet’s documented flow. Follow the provider’s instructions on the device you intend to use. Do not enter a seed or private key into a webpage that says it will validate, sync, or unlock an account.
- Back up recovery material offline and privately. Keep a seed, private key, or equivalent secret out of email, chat, screenshots, and cloud notes. Anyone who obtains it may be able to sign transactions. XRP Ledger guidance advises against sending secret keys over the internet; if you must store secrets digitally, use encrypted storage. See Cryptographic Keys.
- Fund only after checking the current network requirement. Confirm the destination and network before sending, and make sure you understand the reserve that may apply to an account. See the reserve section below.
- Review transaction details before approving. Use the wallet’s trusted signing flow and check what the transaction authorizes. Do not expose signing keys to outside services or public servers. Public ledger activity can be monitored without giving a server your signing secret.
Never share a recovery secret with a person claiming to be support, a website, or anyone else. XRP Ledger documentation says applied transactions cannot be reversed by a privileged administrator; treat signing authority accordingly. Know the XRP Ledger reserve before funding
The XRP Ledger documentation reviewed in 2026 listed Mainnet’s base reserve as 1 XRP and its owner reserve as 0.2 XRP per owned ledger object. These are protocol reserve settings, not a wallet-provider fee, and the documentation says reserve requirements can change. Verify the current values in the Reserves documentation before funding; other networks may differ.
The base reserve and owner reserve are distinct: the owner reserve relates to ledger objects associated with an account. Do not treat the figures as a permanent funding rule or assume they apply identically to every network. A reserve requirement also does not establish what a particular wallet provider may charge for its own service.

Choose a signing setup that fits your needs

The XRP Ledger’s secure signing documentation discusses dedicated signing devices, including the Ledger Nano S, and notes that some devices may not support all transaction types. Product availability and compatibility can change, so check the current manufacturer and wallet documentation before relying on a particular device.
When offline signing is appropriate
Air-gapped signing is an advanced arrangement, not a simple switch that guarantees safety. The XRP Ledger’s offline account setup tutorial describes signing on an offline machine and transferring signed transaction data. The process still depends on trustworthy software, safe data transfer, and control of physical access to the offline device.

- Use offline signing only if you can reliably maintain and secure the offline device and understand the transaction-transfer process.
- Keep removable media and the online machine in scope: either can undermine the separation if compromised or mishandled.
- Confirm transaction details before signing and protect backup material separately from the signing device.
What to do if access or a recovery secret is at risk
- If a secret may have been exposed: treat the account as potentially compromised. Do not enter the secret into another website or send it to support. Use a trusted wallet’s documented process to move assets to an account with a new secret, if you still control the account and can do so safely.
- If you lose a non-custodial secret: access may be unrecoverable. A wallet vendor, the XRP Ledger, or a support agent cannot be assumed to restore it.
- If a transaction is already applied: an administrator cannot reverse it. Check the transaction and account activity through a trusted wallet or ledger interface, without disclosing the signing secret.
