Set up a child’s own Microsoft account, add it to your family group, and use Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety to choose limits for screen time, content, purchases and online interaction. These controls cover Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; you do not need to buy a new console just to configure them.
1. Set up an adult organizer account and a child account
Use an adult’s Microsoft account to organize the family group, and create or use a separate Microsoft account for the child. Add the child to the family group through Microsoft Family Safety. Account creation, consent and other prompts can vary by age and country, so follow the instructions shown for your region rather than relying on a single age rule.

2. Sign the child into their own Xbox profile
On the console, have the child play using their own account and profile, rather than an adult’s. That keeps activity distinct and lets family settings apply to the child’s account. Xbox describes controls for family members across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in its Xbox family settings overview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Set screen time and schedules
Use the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft Family Safety to set time limits and schedules that work for your household. Microsoft says limits can be managed online or in its app; Xbox time counts while the family member is signed in. Make signing out part of the routine when play is finished so an open session does not continue counting toward the limit. See Microsoft’s screen time guidance.

4. Choose content and online interaction settings
Review the child’s content limits and privacy settings, then decide which online features to allow. Xbox family controls can manage multiplayer access, clubs, broadcasting, adding friends and chat. Choose settings based on the child, the games they play and your household’s expectations; there is no single setting that is right for every family. The Xbox family settings overview and Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Safety Toolkit describe family controls and age-suitable settings.
- Content: Set age-appropriate limits for games and apps.
- Multiplayer and chat: Decide whether the child can play online and communicate with other players.
- Friends, clubs and broadcasts: Choose whether the child can add friends, join clubs or broadcast gameplay.
- Privacy: Review what information and activity other players can see.
5. Require approval for purchases
If the child should ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox, turn on purchase approval for the child’s account. Microsoft’s documented console route is Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download, then enable Ask a parent. Child or teen defaults may already have this enabled. Menu labels can change; if the route differs on your console, look for purchase permissions in the child’s Xbox privacy and family settings. See Microsoft’s purchase approval instructions.

6. Agree on the rules and revisit them
Explain the limits to the child and agree on how they can ask for more time or a purchase. Talk about what to do if an online interaction feels uncomfortable, including how to report it. Revisit the settings as the child grows, changes games or friends, or the household routine shifts. Family settings are available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, though the exact screens may differ by console and software version.
