How to Set Up an Xbox Console and Transfer Your Games and Settings (Xbox One to Series X|S)

To set up a new Xbox, connect it to an HDMI-capable television and broadband internet, sign in with the Microsoft account you plan to use, and allow the first-time setup and console update to finish. If you are moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, use the current Xbox Support migration guide for the actual transfer procedure. The account, storage and update preparation below will keep that migration orderly, but you should not assume that every game, save, license, setting or game version moves in exactly the same way without checking the live instructions.

What you need before starting

Xbox lists four basic requirements for console setup: the Xbox console, a Microsoft account, broadband internet and an HDMI-capable television. See the official Xbox consoles getting-started page for the current preparation checklist.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The console: Keep the console, its supplied power equipment and the television available before beginning.
  • An HDMI-capable TV: The display must accept the console’s HDMI connection.
  • Broadband internet: Initial setup, downloads and mandatory updates require an online connection.
  • A Microsoft account: Use the account that should own or access the player’s Xbox profile and digital library.

An existing Microsoft account is acceptable. Xbox Wire specifically notes that an account already used for Windows, Office or Outlook can be used for Xbox. The Xbox Series X|S product guide says an account and Xbox profile are needed for initial online setup, downloads, mandatory updates and some features, including retention of gameplay settings and information. Those statements explain why choosing the right account matters; they are not a promise that every locally stored item from another console will be copied automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Have the account credentials available before you start, especially if the console will be installed somewhere without easy access to another device for password recovery. If multiple people use the Xbox, identify which Microsoft account belongs to each player. A family member’s Windows or Outlook account may be valid for Xbox, but it should be the account associated with that person’s intended Xbox profile and content.

If the console will be used by children, decide the family arrangement before downloading games. Xbox points owners to Xbox Family Settings, where controls can cover screen time, content restrictions, chat access, friends and spending. Set those controls deliberately rather than treating them as a migration detail. It is easier to establish the intended limits while the new console is clean than to reconstruct them after several profiles and downloads have been added.

Set up the new Xbox step by step

1. Connect the console and display

Place the Xbox where it has adequate ventilation, connect it to the HDMI-capable television and make the broadband connection available. Turn on the television and select the input used by the console. Xbox’s getting-started requirements establish the need for the HDMI display and broadband connection, but they do not specify a universal television model, network speed target or room layout.

Keep the console and its power equipment together until setup is complete. If the television has several HDMI inputs, note which one you used; that simple detail prevents a common false start when the console is powered on but the screen remains on another source.

2. Start first-time setup

Power on the Xbox and follow the on-screen setup prompts. When asked to sign in, use the Microsoft account that should remain associated with this console. If several people will play, each person can use the account and profile intended for that player; do not create a substitute account simply to get through setup if the goal is to retain an existing player’s Xbox information.

Signing in with the same Microsoft account used on the older Xbox is the sensible starting point for an Xbox One-to-Series X|S move. It gives the new console access to the account’s Xbox profile and the services that require that profile. It does not, by itself, establish that every setting, local save, entitlement or installed game has been transferred.

If the console offers account or profile choices and you are uncertain which one owns a game, stop and verify before proceeding. Downloading on the wrong account can make the new console appear incomplete even though the content is associated with a different household profile.

3. Let setup and the console update finish

Complete the initial setup and allow the console update to finish before attaching extra equipment. Xbox Wire’s November 15, 2024 setup guidance recommends this order and specifically places peripherals such as external hard drives and battery-charging stations after setup and updating. Interrupting the update or adding storage too early can make it harder to tell whether a later problem is caused by setup, software or an accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the console connected to broadband until the update and any required setup downloads have completed. The Series X|S product guide identifies downloads and mandatory updates among the functions that require an account and Xbox profile. Do not judge the migration by the first screen you see immediately after power-on; the library and settings can be incomplete until setup and updating have finished.

4. Confirm the intended account and profile

Before beginning a library move, verify that the new console is using the Microsoft account belonging to the player whose games and settings you want to access. This is especially important in a household with multiple Microsoft accounts. If the wrong account was used, pause the migration rather than buying or downloading content again; the official migration instructions should be followed for account-specific recovery or correction.

A useful preflight check is to write down the email address or account identity used on the Xbox One, the profile name players recognize, and which account should manage family controls. This is not a replacement for Microsoft’s account-recovery process, but it reduces the risk of confusing two legitimate accounts during setup.

5. Apply family controls when needed

For a child account, configure Xbox Family Settings after the console is online and before handing over the controller. Xbox Wire describes controls for screen time, content restrictions, chat, friends and spending. The exact choices depend on the family’s rules, so record the intended limits before changing them on the new device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Family settings are a separate decision from moving a game library. Do not assume that changing a spending or chat rule will resolve a missing game or profile; check the signed-in account and the current migration instructions for content problems.

6. Optionally give the console a recognizable name

Naming is not required for setup or migration, but it can prevent confusion when more than one Xbox appears in a Microsoft account or when choosing a device for app or game installation. Microsoft documents the path as Settings > System > Console info > Name. The relevant support page is Manage devices used with your Microsoft account.

Use a name that distinguishes the new console from the Xbox One, such as its room or owner’s name. Treat this as an organizational aid only: naming does not transfer games, saves or settings.

Prepare storage before moving a library

Xbox identifies three broad ways to create room for games: uninstall games you are not actively playing, connect an external hard drive or add a storage expansion card. The official getting-started page lists those choices but does not establish a universally best option, a current capacity recommendation, a price, a particular brand or title-by-title playability rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice When it makes sense What is established What is not established here
Uninstall games you are not playing You want to avoid buying hardware and can download or reinstall a title later. Xbox lists uninstalling inactive games as a way to free space. How much space a particular game needs, download time, and whether a specific title can be moved or replayed in a particular form.
External hard drive You already own compatible external storage or want a separate library location. Xbox lists connecting an external hard drive as an additional-space option. Current interface steps, supported capacities, performance, or which games can run directly from a particular drive.
Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card You need more installed-game space and want the accessory category designed for Series X|S expansion. Xbox names a storage expansion card as an option. A required capacity, exact current model, price, retailer listing, or a claim that every game needs one.

Choose storage after the console has completed its update. If you are transferring an older library, first determine how much you actually need installed at once. Uninstalling is the lowest-commitment option. An external drive may be practical when you already have compatible hardware. A Series X|S storage expansion card is an optional way to add installed-game space, not a prerequisite for signing in or for every transfer.

Xbox Series S | Digital Gaming Console | 512GB SSD | Includes Wireless Controller, 1440P Gaming, 120FPS, Robot White
  • BEST VALUE IN GAMING — Experience next-gen speed and performance in the smallest XBOX ever. The XBOX Series S delivers powerful all-digital gameplay in a sleek, compact design.
  • UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.

Storage planning is also a cost decision. Removing inactive games costs nothing but may require a later download. An external hard drive avoids buying a new accessory if you already own compatible storage, while a Series X|S expansion card is a separate purchase whose exact model, capacity and current price should be checked at the time you shop. Xbox’s guidance does not support naming one option as the best value for every player.

Do not buy a card solely because you are moving consoles. First see how much space the games you actively play require and whether the official transfer process gives you a reason to keep a larger installed library. The expansion card category is relevant for Series X|S storage, but it is not a setup requirement and does not guarantee that every title will behave identically after migration.

How to move games and settings from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S

The relevant official resource is Microsoft’s live Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S support article. Open it after the new console is online and updated, and follow the current instructions shown there. Xbox’s support page was available as the authoritative destination, but its detailed body text was not exposed in the source used for this article; therefore, this guide does not invent menu names, transfer methods, network requirements or limits that may have changed.

Use this safe order around the official instructions:

  1. Finish first-time setup on the Series X|S.
  2. Install the console update and leave the console online.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the Xbox One content you want to access.
  4. Make the storage choice that fits the amount of installed-game space you need.
  5. Open the live Xbox Support migration article and perform the transfer procedure it currently specifies.
  6. After the procedure reports completion, check the new console’s library, available storage and important settings before wiping, selling or disconnecting the old Xbox.

Keep the Xbox One available during this process. It is a reference point for the old profile, library and preferences if something looks different on the Series X|S. Avoid factory-resetting, selling or giving away the old console until you have verified the items you care about and are satisfied that you can access the correct account.

The live support page is the authority for the current transfer workflow. Do not substitute an old menu path copied from a forum or video if Microsoft’s instructions show something different. Transfer features, requirements and limits can change with console software, so the current page should take precedence over a remembered procedure.

What should you expect to transfer?

Signing in with an existing Microsoft account and Xbox profile is supported for online setup and for retaining gameplay settings and information associated with supported Xbox services. That is different from a blanket guarantee that all data on an Xbox One is copied unchanged.

Item How to treat it during migration
Microsoft account and Xbox profile Use the same account when that is the player’s intended identity. The product guide requires an account and profile for online setup and certain features.
Installed games Prepare enough storage and use the current Xbox Support migration procedure. Do not assume every installed title is copied automatically.
Game saves and gameplay information The product guide refers to retention of gameplay settings and information, but the available material does not establish a universal rule for every title or every save location.
Digital licenses and purchases Sign in with the account associated with the content, then follow the live migration and library instructions. No universal license exception or entitlement rule is stated here.
Game versions and compatibility Check the current support article and the individual game’s information. This article does not claim that an Xbox One version and a Series X|S version are interchangeable in every case.
Console-specific preferences Review them on the new console after migration. The available sources do not provide a complete list of settings that transfer.

Think of migration as several checks rather than one guaranteed package. The account establishes the player’s identity, the support procedure handles the current move, storage determines what can be installed, and the final review confirms what actually appeared. This approach avoids mistaking a successful sign-in for proof that every local item moved.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems

The television shows no Xbox picture

Confirm that the television is on the HDMI input connected to the console and that the console is powered. Xbox’s setup requirements call for an HDMI-capable television; if the display still does not show the setup screen, consult Xbox Support rather than guessing at unsupported cable or resolution changes.

Setup cannot get online

Check that broadband internet is available to the console and that the account details are correct. Initial setup, downloads and mandatory updates depend on the online connection described in the Xbox product guide. If the connection remains unavailable, finish the network troubleshooting offered by Xbox Support before attempting a library transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update has not finished

Leave the console connected and allow the update process to complete. Do not attach migration storage or charging accessories as a workaround; Xbox Wire recommends completing setup and updating before adding peripherals. If the update repeatedly fails, record the message shown on screen and use Xbox Support’s current troubleshooting path.

The new console shows the wrong games or profile

Stop and verify the Microsoft account currently signed in. A household can have several accounts, and an account used for Windows, Office or Outlook is only useful for the Xbox library when it is the account intended for that player. Do not delete the old console or repurchase content until the account issue is resolved.

There is not enough space for the library

Use Xbox’s three storage choices: uninstall inactive games, connect an external hard drive or add an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card. The correct choice depends on how many games you want installed and whether you already own compatible external storage. Xbox does not state a single best option or a universal capacity in the cited guidance.

You cannot tell which console to select

Give the new console a distinctive name through Settings > System > Console info > Name. Microsoft says naming helps identify a device when selecting a destination for app or game installation. This is an organizational aid, not a transfer requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game or setting is still missing

Leave the old Xbox intact, confirm the signed-in account, check available storage and revisit the live migration article. The cited material does not provide a universal promise for every game, save, license, version or console preference, so avoid assuming that a missing item means it was permanently lost.

Final verification checklist

  • The television displays the new Xbox through its HDMI connection.
  • Broadband internet is connected and the initial update has completed.
  • The intended Microsoft account and Xbox profile are signed in.
  • Family controls are configured if children will use the console.
  • The storage plan matches the number of games you want installed.
  • The live Xbox Support migration article has been followed for the Xbox One-to-Series X|S transfer.
  • The new console’s library and important settings have been checked before the old Xbox is erased or given away.
  • The old console remains available until you are satisfied that the migration and account access are correct.

The reliable principle is simple: finish a clean, updated setup first, use the correct Microsoft account, then perform the migration from the live Xbox Support instructions. Storage expansion can make room for a larger installed library, but it is optional, and the exact transfer behavior for games, saves, licenses and settings must be confirmed against the current support page rather than assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up a new Xbox?

Connect the Xbox to an HDMI-capable television, make broadband internet available, power it on, sign in with the intended Microsoft account and complete the first-time setup and console update before adding peripherals.

Can I use my Windows, Office or Outlook Microsoft account on Xbox?

Yes. Xbox Wire says an existing Microsoft account used for services such as Windows, Office or Outlook can be used for Xbox. Use the account associated with the Xbox profile and content you want to access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I transfer games from Xbox One to Xbox Series X?

Complete setup and updating on the Series X|S, sign in with the account used for the Xbox One content, then follow the current Microsoft support article titled “Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S.” The live page supplies the current procedure.

Do my Xbox settings transfer to a new console?

The Series X|S product guide refers to retaining gameplay settings and information associated with supported Xbox services, but the available guidance does not promise that every console-specific setting or locally stored item transfers. Review important settings after the move.

Do I need a storage expansion card to transfer Xbox games?

No. Xbox lists uninstalling inactive games, connecting an external hard drive and adding a Series X|S storage expansion card as storage choices. The card is optional and is not identified as a transfer requirement.

Should I erase my Xbox One after the transfer starts?

No. Keep the Xbox One until the new console is updated, the migration procedure is complete and you have checked the library, account and important settings. The old console provides a reference if something is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the new Xbox shows the wrong library?

Pause the migration, verify the Microsoft account and profile currently signed in, check storage and consult the live Xbox Support migration instructions. Do not repurchase content or erase the old console while the account issue is unresolved.

How can I tell my two Xbox consoles apart?

Use Microsoft’s documented path, Settings > System > Console info > Name, to give the new console a recognizable name. Naming helps identify a device for app or game installation but does not itself transfer data.

The Bottom Line

Set up the Series X|S with the correct Microsoft account, broadband connection and HDMI display, finish the update before adding accessories, choose storage based on your real installed-library needs, and follow Microsoft’s current Xbox One migration guide. Keep the old console until every important game, setting and account detail has been checked.
