Set up an ultrawide OLED by confirming the monitor, graphics source and cable can deliver your target resolution and refresh rate, then configure the operating system, game features, HDR and workspace. Finish by enabling the monitor’s own OLED care features. Exact port limits, menu names and feature conflicts vary by model, so use your monitor’s manual for its specific settings.
1. Check the monitor and make room for it
Before connecting anything, note the monitor’s model, native resolution, maximum refresh rate for each input, HDR and VRR support, included cables, stand adjustments, mount pattern and panel-care instructions. These details determine which setup options are available.

Measure desk depth and width, and consider your viewing angle and whether more than one person will use the screen. A curved ultrawide’s fit depends partly on those factors, as Lenovo notes in its ultrawide monitor guidance. Adjust the stand or choose a mount only after checking the monitor’s weight and mount specifications. For example, LG lists tilt, height and swivel adjustments, 100 × 100 mm VESA mounting, and weights of 11.45 kg with the stand and 7.30 kg without it for the 39GX90SB-W. Those figures apply to that model, not ultrawides generally. LG’s product listing also specifies its dimensions and included cables.

2. Connect through a port that supports your target output
The monitor, graphics output and cable must all support the resolution and refresh rate you want. Check the specifications for the exact monitor input you plan to use; a connector’s name alone does not establish that it can deliver every advertised mode.

For one model-specific example, LG says its 39-inch 39GX90SB-W has a 3440 × 1440, 21:9 panel with refresh rates up to 240 Hz, and lists DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 for WQHD at 240 Hz. LG also says the graphics card and a suitable cable are required. Since the product listing says cables are included, first check the box and the cable’s capability rather than assuming you need to buy another. LG 39GX90SB-W specifications are specific to the UK-listed product.
For a laptop connected over USB-C, confirm that the computer supports video output over USB-C and that the monitor supports the needed mode. Philips’ specification for the 34M2C8600/69 distinguishes video via DisplayPort Alt Mode from charging via USB-C Power Delivery; having USB-C ports does not by itself establish support for both functions. Philips’ model specification describes that display’s implementation.
3. Set resolution and refresh rate in the operating system
Select the monitor’s native resolution and the highest refresh rate offered for the connection you are using. The exact labels and paths vary by operating system and graphics driver; check both the operating system’s display settings and the GPU control panel, and make sure their output choices agree.

If your target refresh rate is missing, check these items before changing picture modes:
- Confirm that the monitor is set to the input connected to your computer.
- Check that the selected monitor port, cable and graphics output all support the target resolution and refresh rate.
- Review the monitor’s specification for limits that differ by input.
- Recheck the operating-system and graphics-driver display settings after correcting a connection or input choice.
These checks follow from manufacturers’ stated connection requirements; they are not a guarantee that every computer exposes the same settings.

4. Configure VRR and other gaming features
If both the display and graphics source support variable refresh rate (VRR) or adaptive sync, enable the compatible option in the relevant monitor and graphics settings. Then consult the monitor manual for interactions with other features: gaming enhancements, picture-in-picture, aspect controls and HDR may be disabled or limited in particular combinations.
For example, ASUS documents a 40–240 Hz VRR range on the ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDM. Its manual says PIP/PBP, ELMB and aspect control are unavailable when VRR is enabled; it also says ELMB disables HDR and VRR. These are constraints for that model, not universal OLED rules. Check the ASUS PG34WCDM User Guide or your own monitor’s manual before choosing a combination.
Are ultrawide monitors compatible with all games?
No. Some games do not support ultrawide resolutions natively. They may show black bars or use scaling behavior, and the available aspect-ratio or field-of-view settings vary by title. Lenovo describes these compatibility limits in its ultrawide monitor FAQ. Check a game’s own display settings; do not assume ultrawide support always reveals more of the scene.
What refresh rates are available on ultrawide OLED monitors?
There is no single refresh rate for the category. It depends on the model, its input, the computer’s graphics output and the connection. Lenovo notes that specifications vary between monitors; use the exact model’s input-by-input specifications and the rate available in your operating system rather than relying on a category-wide figure. Lenovo’s guidance discusses that variation.
5. Enable HDR for compatible content
HDR is not one universal picture preset. Use it when the operating system, content and monitor support HDR, then choose among the HDR modes available on your display and consult its manual for controls that may be limited in HDR. Do not apply a brightness value or preset from another model as though it were a universal calibration.

On the PG34WCDM, ASUS lists Gaming HDR, Cinema HDR and Console HDR, and documents picture controls that become unavailable or limited in HDR. That example shows why the monitor’s own mode descriptions matter; it does not establish a best HDR mode for all displays. See the ASUS manual for its specific options.

Use your operating system’s window-snapping tools or, if available, the manufacturer’s utility to place apps side by side. A wide workspace can suit spreadsheets, documents, coding, dashboards and timelines, but the result depends on app behavior, scaling and how much screen space you want to give each window. Lenovo describes these workflows in its ultrawide display guidance.
Some manufacturers add layout tools. LG says its PC-only LG Switch app can arrange windows within a single input and provides shortcuts for smart functions. Check the app’s compatibility and the monitor’s instructions before installing it; this example applies to LG’s supported products, not every ultrawide. LG’s product page describes the feature.
Do ultrawide monitors support split-screen layouts?
They can support side-by-side work through operating-system window tools or model-specific software. Whether a particular split layout is available depends on the computer, apps and monitor features; some monitors also offer PIP/PBP, which can interact with VRR or other modes. Check the monitor manual before relying on hardware split-screen features. Lenovo discusses multitasking and split-screen layouts in its FAQ.
7. Leave OLED care to the monitor’s instructions
Keep the monitor’s panel-protection features enabled, follow its prompts, and allow it to enter standby or power off when appropriate so any automatic care process can run. Follow the exact model’s instructions about when a refresh starts and whether it is safe to interrupt; do not impose a pixel-refresh schedule from another display.
MSI says the MPG 491CQPS QD-OLED performs an automatic panel refresh on standby or power-off after its stated interval. That describes MSI’s cited model and does not establish a universal refresh interval or guarantee against image retention. MSI’s product page provides the model-specific care information.
