Interpreter Workstation is the clearest documented open-source desktop workspace for Claude Cowork-style work on local files. You can build it from source, point it at a hosted provider or a local model, and give the agent a narrowly scoped folder through a permission boundary.
That choice has two separate parts: where files are accessed and where model inference runs. A local-file workspace can still send prompts or selected content to a cloud provider. If inference must stay on your computer, configure a local provider such as Ollama or LM Studio and verify the active provider in the app.

What you are setting up
Interpreter Workstation is a self-hostable desktop workspace built on Open Interpreter. Its project documentation describes an agent that can read files through the application’s permissioned file boundary and render document previews locally. It does not require an Interpreter account, and it supports either a compatible cloud provider or a local model.
This is a focused alternative for local-file tasks, not a proven one-for-one replacement for every Claude Cowork feature. The available documentation establishes file access, provider selection, previews, and permission controls. It does not establish feature parity, comparative speed, model quality, or independent security superiority.

Choose local or hosted inference before installing
The first decision is whether the model itself should run on your computer. Workstation can work with local files while using a hosted model, or it can connect to a local model provider. These arrangements have different data paths.
Local files with a hosted model
The workspace can open a folder on your computer and enforce its file permissions while the model runs through a supported cloud provider. Prompts, extracted text, or other selected content may be sent to that provider according to the provider’s service behavior. The available project material does not establish the data-handling terms of every provider, so read the provider’s current policy before using confidential material.
Local files with local inference
To keep inference on the same computer, configure a local provider. Open Interpreter’s first-run setup names Ollama and LM Studio as ways to connect a local model. After setup, confirm the active model and provider in Workstation rather than assuming that selecting a local folder made inference local.
Hosted and local are not quality or speed guarantees
A local model may have different capabilities, context limits, and hardware requirements from a hosted model. The project documentation does not provide a benchmark or a model-quality comparison. Choose the provider based on your privacy, hardware, connectivity, and task requirements, then test it with a small folder.
Source-build prerequisites
The repository’s documented source-build path expects a developer workstation with all of the following:
- Node.js 22
- pnpm 9
- Bun
- Rust stable and Cargo
- Git with submodule support
Install those tools using the method recommended for your operating system, and check that each executable is available in your shell before cloning. Version mismatches can cause dependency or native-build failures; use the required major versions rather than substituting an older Node.js or pnpm release.
Build Interpreter Workstation from source
The following is the project’s documented source-build sequence. It downloads platform-specific components used by the application, builds the project, and starts the result.

Clone the repository with its submodules:

Install JavaScript and project dependencies:

Download the Open Interpreter executable for the current platform:

Keep the terminal available while you validate the first launch. If the build exits with a missing-command error, check the prerequisite versions and your shell’s PATH before changing project files. If cloning does not bring in required submodules, remove the incomplete directory and repeat the clone command with --recurse-submodules rather than silently proceeding with a partial checkout.

Open Interpreter’s quickstart describes a first-run flow that walks through provider selection. Use it to choose either a supported hosted service or a local connection.

At provider setup, select the service you intend to use. For local inference, choose a configured Ollama or LM Studio connection, or another provider supported by the current build.

Select a model exposed by that provider.

Confirm the provider and model shown by the application before opening sensitive files.

Run a harmless prompt against a small test folder to verify that the model can answer and that the workspace can see the files you granted.
If a local provider is not detected, start that provider separately, confirm that its model is downloaded and available, then restart or reconnect Workstation. Do not infer successful local inference merely because the agent can list a local directory.

Start with a copy of a few non-sensitive files. A dedicated test folder makes it easier to understand what the agent can read and write and limits the consequences of a mistaken instruction.

Create a new folder outside your main documents, source repositories, password stores, and backup directories.

Copy in several representative files, such as a text document, a spreadsheet, and a presentation. Remove confidential data from the copies.

Choose the most restrictive sandbox mode that still supports your immediate task.

Keep approval enabled for actions that could change files, execute commands, or affect anything outside the test folder.
A useful first request is informational rather than destructive: ask the agent to list the files it can see, summarize each one, and identify any uncertainty. Next ask for a proposed organization plan without permitting changes. Inspect the plan, then approve individual writes only after checking the target paths.
Set sandbox and approval controls deliberately
Open Interpreter’s CLI reference names three sandbox modes and three approval policies. The exact presentation can vary by build, but the underlying choices describe how much access the agent receives and when it must ask before consequential actions.

These controls reduce the blast radius but do not make an agent infallible. Review paths, commands, and proposed edits. A permission boundary is not a guarantee that an instruction is correct or that every integration behaves safely.
Run a safe first local-file task
Use a staged workflow that separates observation, planning, and execution.

Inventory: Ask, “List the files in this workspace and group them by extension. Do not modify anything.” Check that the list contains only the test material you intended to expose.

Summarize: Ask for a short summary of each file, with a note when a format cannot be parsed. This tests file visibility and model responses without requesting a write.

Plan: Ask for a proposed folder structure or rename plan. Require the agent to show old and new paths and to identify possible name collisions.

Review: Check every proposed path. Correct ambiguous instructions before granting write permission.

Execute narrowly: Switch to
workspace-writeonly for the designated test folder and approve the requested operation. Do not broaden access to solve an unrelated failure. -
Verify: Inspect the resulting files manually, including names, extensions, contents, and any generated logs. If the result is wrong, stop the session and restore from your disposable copy.

For recurring jobs, keep prompts explicit about scope: name the folder, state whether deletion is forbidden, require a dry-run plan, and ask the agent to stop when a file is ambiguous.
What document workflows are supported
Read-only previews
Community Workstation builds include local, read-only previews for DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. You can inspect the rendered result without treating the preview as an editing surface. A preview may not expose every feature of a complex office file, so verify important formatting in the original application.
Transformation and generation
The project describes document transformation and generation through code execution and reusable skills. This can support tasks such as extracting structured information, creating a new file from data, or applying a repeatable transformation, provided the necessary runtime and skill are available.
Rich editing and conversion
Rich embedded editing and broad format conversion are optional integrations. They require a compatible document engine configured separately; they are not implied by the built-in previews. If your workflow depends on tracked changes, layout-preserving conversion, formulas, macros, or embedded objects, validate that engine and the resulting files independently.
Understand privacy and data flow
The community source build is described as having no hosted account provider, hosted API, telemetry, crash-reporting endpoint, or external document-engine source by default. That describes the default community distribution, not every provider or integration you may add.
When you connect a hosted model, your prompts and any selected file content can leave the computer through that provider. The documentation available for this setup does not settle retention, training, logging, regional processing, or enterprise controls for each provider. Treat those terms as a separate due-diligence step.
With a local provider, inference can remain on the computer, but the provider, model runtime, operating system, and any optional integration still form part of the data path. Confirm the active provider in Workstation and avoid assuming that “local model” covers every plugin or external engine.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The repository builds without required components
Check that the clone included submodules, then rerun the three platform download commands from the documented sequence. Confirm that the command-line tools are the required versions and that the downloads completed for the current operating system.

pnpm install or the build fails with a version error
Verify Node.js 22 and pnpm 9 first. Also check that Bun, Rust stable, Cargo, and Git are available in the same shell session. Remove only the incomplete dependency state when necessary and repeat the install; do not replace the required toolchain with an unverified version.
The app starts but cannot connect to a model
Confirm that the selected provider is running, that the model is installed or available, and that the provider endpoint configured in the app is correct. Recheck the active provider after reconnecting. A successful file listing does not prove that the model connection is local or even that it is the provider you intended.
The agent cannot see a file
Make sure the file is inside the connected workspace, that the file type is supported for the operation, and that the current permission mode allows access. Test with a simple text file before diagnosing a complex office document. If the folder is outside the permitted boundary, add only that specific folder rather than enabling broader access.
A write operation is blocked
Read-only mode is designed to block writes. Move to workspace-write for the dedicated test folder and keep approval set to on-request. If the requested change involves a location outside the workspace, stop and reconsider the scope instead of switching to danger-full-access.

A document preview is missing or incomplete
Check whether the file is DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX and whether you are using a community build that includes the preview feature. Preview support is read-only and does not replace a compatible document engine for editing or conversion. For important layouts, open the original file in the application that created it.
How this differs from Claude Cowork
Anthropic’s current help material describes Cowork sessions as cloud-based by default, while also describing local sessions for existing desktop deployments. Its usage guidance says new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run in the cloud beginning October 6, 2026. Because the authoritative date for this article is October 13, 2026, Cowork’s local/cloud behavior is plan- and deployment-dependent; verify the current behavior for your account.
Anthropic also describes local file access as limited to folders connected on desktop, with local tool calls checked against permissions. Workstation approaches the same narrow problem from an open-source, self-hostable direction, but the available documentation does not prove equivalent features or behavior. Compare only the aspects that matter to your task:

When this setup is a good fit
- Good fit: You want an open-source desktop workspace, need an agent to inspect a bounded folder, and are comfortable managing a developer-oriented build or release.
- Good fit: You need the option to connect a local model while retaining a permissioned file workflow.
- Use caution: You require a polished, platform-specific installer with no toolchain work. The documented route is a source build, and installer steps were not established here.
- Use caution: You need guaranteed feature parity with Cowork, enterprise data controls, or a benchmarked model experience. Those claims are not established by the project documentation.
- Use caution: You need full office editing or conversion. Plan for a separately configured compatible document engine and validate the output.
Keep the installation maintainable
Record the versions of Node.js, pnpm, Bun, Rust, and the model provider used for a working setup. Keep the project directory separate from the folders exposed to the agent, and retain a disposable test copy for upgrades. After updating Workstation or a provider, repeat the inventory and dry-run tests before allowing writes. Reconfirm the active provider and sandbox mode each time you change environments.
