How to Set Up an OLED TV for the Best Picture Quality

Start with your OLED TV’s accurate movie-oriented picture mode, then adjust its luminance for your room. Let HDR content use the TV’s HDR picture mode, check the HDMI format setting for external sources, and use a separate game mode for gaming. Exact settings and menu labels vary by model, so treat numbers from another TV as examples—not universal settings.

Before changing settings, identify the TV and source

Find the exact TV model and decide which source you are setting up: a built-in streaming app, a player or set-top box connected over HDMI, or a console or gaming PC. Picture controls may be stored separately for different inputs or signal types, and menu names vary with the model and firmware. A setting that works for one input may not carry over to another.

The published examples below come from RTINGS guides for particular LG televisions. They illustrate how to approach setup, not a universal preset list for every OLED. Check your own manual or on-screen menus for the equivalent control. The guides describe tested models, so use the exact model name and year when looking up settings; a similar product name does not guarantee identical menu options or picture behavior.

It also helps to separate the jobs before you begin. For a built-in app, the TV receives the app’s picture directly. For a player or console, the TV is displaying a signal arriving through a particular HDMI input, so both the TV input and the external device’s output settings matter. If a picture mode or format setting seems unavailable, first confirm that you are looking at the input and signal type you intend to adjust.

Make changes in a deliberate order rather than changing many controls at once. Start with the picture mode, set SDR luminance in the room where you watch, and then check HDR and external inputs using the corresponding content and source. That makes it easier to understand which adjustment changed the picture and reduces the temptation to compensate for one setting by altering unrelated controls.

Choose an accurate picture mode for movies and TV

For film and scripted TV, begin with the set’s accurate movie-oriented mode. Depending on the manufacturer and model, it may be called Filmmaker Mode, Cinema, or Expert/Dark Space. These labels are not proof that modes behave identically across televisions; the useful principle is to choose the option intended to preserve the source’s picture rather than an extra-bright or heavily processed look.

For examples of how model-specific these choices are, RTINGS used Filmmaker Mode as its accuracy-oriented starting point for its LG B6 OLED (2026) settings guide. Its LG C4 guide identifies Expert (Dark Space, night) as an accurate out-of-box SDR option and Filmmaker Mode as an alternative. These findings apply to the tested sets, not automatically to other models. RTINGS’ LG B6 OLED (2026) settings guide also cautions that its settings are starting points rather than values to copy exactly.

A name is a useful clue, not a guarantee. If your TV offers several cinema-oriented presets, choose the one its manual or settings guide identifies as the accurate option for the picture type you are watching. Do not assume a mode called Cinema or Filmmaker will have the same controls, default luminance, or behavior on another brand—or even on a different model year.

Once you select the mode, evaluate the image before changing other controls. Make one adjustment at a time and check the same scene or program again. That helps you distinguish a useful change from a setting that merely makes the image look different. If the starting image looks too dim or too bright, first consider luminance in relation to your room rather than abandoning the accuracy-oriented mode or changing black level, contrast, and color together.

For repeatable comparisons, use content you know and watch it under your normal conditions. An image that appears different in a brightly lit shop or in an unfamiliar room may not be a better match for your home. The practical objective is to keep the accurate preset’s picture behavior while making the luminance comfortable for your viewing environment.

Set SDR luminance for the room

For standard dynamic range (SDR) viewing, adjust the control named something like OLED Pixel Brightness or OLED Pixel Light to suit the room and your comfort. A brighter room may call for more luminance than a dark room. Keep that choice separate from controls for black level, contrast, or color: changing those is not simply a way to make the screen brighter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy an OLED brightness number from another model. In RTINGS’ 2025 guide for its tested LG B5, OLED Pixel Light at 76 produced about 200 nits on that unit. That is a measurement for that particular TV, not a recommended setting for every B5—or for OLED TVs generally. RTINGS’ LG C4 guidance likewise treats OLED Pixel Brightness as something to adapt to the viewing environment and preference.

The B5 example is useful because it shows why a menu number and a measured luminance are not interchangeable across sets. A value of 76 refers to a control position on the tested B5, not a promise that the same position on another OLED will produce about 200 nits. Even where a menu uses the same or a similar label, the model and unit matter. Treat the figure as context for that test, not as a target you need to reproduce.

If you are unsure where to begin, leave the accuracy-oriented preset’s other picture controls intact and make a small adjustment to the luminance control. Judge it with ordinary content in your usual viewing light. A setting that looks comfortable in daylight may not suit evening viewing, so adjust it when your environment changes rather than treating one number as a calibration target.

Use the same content and room conditions while comparing adjustments. If you change luminance and several other picture controls together, it becomes difficult to tell which change helped. Keep the task simple: choose the accurate mode first, adjust its luminance for the room and your preference, and avoid using a control for black level, contrast, or color as a substitute for that adjustment.

There is no single SDR luminance value that the cited model-specific guidance establishes as best for every room or viewer. A comfortable result in a bright room and a comfortable result at night may differ. The relevant check is whether the image suits the conditions in which you actually watch while retaining the preset’s other picture behavior.

Let HDR use its own picture settings

High dynamic range (HDR) uses a different signal and picture mode from SDR. When HDR content is detected, the television may switch to an HDR picture mode automatically. Do not assume that your SDR settings—or a numeric value you found for another mode—will carry over unchanged. Set up SDR and HDR as separate cases.

When checking HDR, play HDR content through the source you normally use and confirm that the TV has entered its HDR mode. The exact indication and settings available depend on the TV. If you are watching through a built-in app, the HDMI input-format step does not apply; if the content is coming from an external device, check that device’s connection and output configuration as well.

HDR tone mapping is one choice where preferences can differ. On the tested LG B6 OLED (2026), RTINGS’ accuracy-preferred HDR10 starting point has Dynamic Tone Mapping off; its brighter-preferred option has it on. This is a model-specific tradeoff: one option follows the guide’s accuracy preference, while the other uses additional tone mapping for a brighter presentation. It is not a universal instruction to turn the feature on or off on every TV.

What you prefer on the tested LG B6 OLED (2026) RTINGS’ HDR10 starting point What the choice means
Accuracy preference Dynamic Tone Mapping off The guide’s accuracy-oriented option for that model.
Brighter preference Dynamic Tone Mapping on The guide’s brighter option, using additional tone mapping.

Use these as examples for understanding the choice, not as settings to transfer blindly. The control name, behavior, and available options may differ on another television. If the menu on your TV uses a different feature name, do not infer that it must work in the same way as the B6 control.

The choice is about your preferred presentation, not a fault that every owner needs to fix. If you prioritize the accuracy preference in the cited B6 guide, use that model’s off setting as the starting point. If you prefer the guide’s brighter option, its on setting is the alternative. Neither example establishes a universal best setting for all HDR televisions, and an SDR brightness adjustment is not a replacement for deciding how HDR should be presented.

Check the HDMI input when an external device’s HDR is missing

Built-in streaming apps do not use an HDMI input. An external player or console does, and the TV may require an HDMI Deep Color setting—or the manufacturer’s equivalent—to be enabled for the specific port carrying that device. RTINGS’ LG C1 guide says this setting may be required for external HDR and notes that older devices can have compatibility problems.

  1. Confirm which HDMI port the external device is physically connected to, then select that input on the TV.
  2. In the TV’s input or connection settings, look for HDMI Deep Color or the equivalent format option for that port. Menu wording and location depend on the model.
  3. Enable the format option if the device and TV support it, then check whether HDR content is recognized. Consult the TV and device manuals if the option is unavailable or causes a compatibility problem.
  4. Check the external device’s output settings as well. A console or player must be configured to send a compatible HDR signal; the TV setting alone does not configure the source.

If HDR is missing, work through the signal path rather than changing unrelated picture controls. Verify that you selected the port the source actually uses, confirm that the TV’s format setting is enabled for that port if required, and review the external device’s output settings. A built-in app does not use this HDMI step, so it is not the right place to troubleshoot an app’s HDR behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the device is older, enabling the port setting can expose a compatibility issue rather than fix one. In that case, check the manufacturers’ guidance for the exact TV and source combination. The evidence for this setup step does not establish that replacing a cable or buying a premium cable improves picture quality.

A cable is relevant only as part of connecting an external device to the TV; the cited guidance establishes an input-format setting, not a requirement to buy a new or premium cable. If you are considering a cable for a connection problem, do not treat a more expensive product as a picture-quality upgrade based on these setup recommendations. First verify the TV input setting and source configuration, and consult the device makers if the combination remains incompatible.

Use a separate setup for gaming

Movie-oriented modes are intended for watching content, while games benefit from a mode designed around responsive controls and gaming features. On the cited LG B6 OLED (2026), Game Optimizer mode or its separate setting provides the lowest input lag and gaming features. Other televisions may use a different name or offer different controls.

  1. Select the HDMI input used by the console or gaming PC.
  2. Enable the TV’s Game, Game Optimizer, or equivalent gaming mode for that input, if available.
  3. Confirm the console or PC output settings are configured as intended, then test a game that makes control response easy to notice.

Do not assume that movie motion-processing settings are appropriate for games. If you switch between games and films on the same source, use the relevant picture mode for each activity rather than forcing one configuration to serve both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep gaming as its own branch of setup. A movie preset is a sensible place to begin for films, but the cited B6 guide identifies its gaming feature as the option for the lowest input lag and gaming features on that model. Check your television’s own menu and model-specific guidance rather than assuming the B6 label or behavior applies to another OLED.

If a game does not appear as expected, check both ends of the connection: the selected TV input and the console or PC’s output configuration. The TV’s game mode addresses the television’s gaming setup; it does not by itself configure the source device. For mixed use, choose the movie-oriented mode when watching and the game-specific option when playing instead of trying to make one preset satisfy both tasks.

Keep measured white-balance calibration optional

Basic setup—choosing a picture mode and adjusting luminance for the room—can be done through the TV’s menus. White-balance calibration is a separate, more advanced task. RTINGS notes that HDR calibration values vary by individual unit on its B6 guide, and its C4 guide also discusses unit variation. A set of multipoint or service-menu values published for one sample may not correct another panel and could make its picture less accurate.

For that reason, do not copy another owner’s white-balance numbers or service-menu changes as if they were universal. A measured, panel-specific calibration is a different undertaking from the straightforward setup steps above; a colorimeter is one category of tool used for that work, but it is not needed for the basic setup described here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction is practical: the basic steps in this guide are choices you can make in ordinary picture menus, while per-unit white balance concerns measurements for an individual panel. A value listed for one tested sample is not automatically a correction for your set. In particular, avoid applying multipoint or service-menu values simply because they appear in a settings list for a model with a similar name.

If you want to pursue measured calibration, treat it as optional and panel-specific rather than a prerequisite for good everyday viewing. The cited guidance does not identify a particular colorimeter or software package, nor does it say that a reader needs those tools to select an accurate preset and set a comfortable luminance.

Choose settings by viewing task

Viewing situation Starting approach Important distinction
Movies or TV in SDR Use the model’s accurate movie-oriented preset; adapt OLED luminance to the room. Do not treat another TV’s brightness number as a universal target.
HDR movies or shows Allow HDR mode to engage and choose between the model’s accuracy and brighter tone-mapping preferences. HDR settings are separate from SDR; the B6 example does not prescribe settings for other models.
Built-in streaming app Use the app’s signal and the TV’s HDR mode when HDR content is detected. No HDMI input-format step is involved.
External HDR source Check the selected HDMI port’s Deep Color or equivalent setting, plus the source’s output configuration. Older equipment may have compatibility issues.
Console or PC gaming Use the TV’s game-specific mode or feature and check the device’s output settings. Gaming responsiveness and features are a different priority from movie presentation.
Panel-specific white balance Use measured calibration if pursuing per-unit accuracy. Published values can vary by individual panel and should not be copied blindly.

The table is a decision guide, not a preset list. If you watch only SDR through a built-in app, you can focus on an accurate movie preset and room-appropriate luminance. HDR viewing adds a separate HDR preference. An external HDR player adds an input-format check; gaming adds a game-specific TV mode and source-output check. The advanced calibration path remains optional.

A practical order for setup

For an existing OLED TV, make changes in this order: identify the model and source, choose its accurate movie-oriented mode, adjust SDR luminance for the room, confirm HDR mode and preference with HDR content, check the HDMI format setting for external sources, and switch to a game-specific mode for gaming. Leave advanced white-balance adjustments alone unless you are pursuing measured calibration for that individual set. This sequence keeps the everyday decisions accessible while avoiding the common mistake of treating one model’s numbers as universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When checking your work, keep the viewing task in mind. Use the movie-oriented preset for films and scripted TV, judge SDR luminance in your normal room conditions, and test HDR with HDR content rather than assuming SDR controls tell the whole story. If the source is external, verify its actual input and output settings. If you are gaming, use the TV’s game option rather than assuming the movie setup is also the right gaming setup.

Finally, resist the urge to enter calibration values simply because they are published for another set. The RTINGS examples are tied to tested models and units: Filmmaker Mode on its LG B6 OLED (2026), an Expert (Dark Space, night) SDR option on its LG C4, and roughly 200 nits at OLED Pixel Light 76 on its tested LG B5 in 2025. Those examples show how to think about setup; they do not replace checking your own TV’s model, firmware, input, and viewing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best picture settings for an OLED TV?

Start with your model’s accurate movie-oriented preset, such as Filmmaker, Cinema, or an Expert/Dark Space option if that is the model’s accurate choice. Adjust the SDR OLED luminance control for your room and preference. Treat HDR separately, check HDMI format settings for external HDR devices, and use a game-specific mode for gaming. Exact settings vary by TV and firmware.

Should I use Filmmaker Mode?

Use it as a starting point if your TV offers it as an accurate movie-oriented mode. The name alone does not guarantee identical behavior across models. RTINGS used Filmmaker Mode for its LG B6 OLED (2026) starting point and lists it as an alternative to Expert (Dark Space, night) for SDR on the LG C4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does HDR look different from SDR?

HDR uses a different signal and picture mode, so the TV may switch to separate HDR settings when it detects HDR content. Do not assume SDR controls or values transfer unchanged. Tone-mapping choices can also trade an accuracy-oriented presentation against a brighter preference, as in RTINGS’ model-specific LG B6 example.

Why isn’t HDR working from my console or player?

Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input the device actually uses. Check whether HDMI Deep Color or the equivalent format option needs to be enabled for that port, then verify the console or player’s output settings. Older devices can have compatibility issues with the TV’s input setting; built-in apps do not use this HDMI step.

Should I copy OLED settings from another TV?

Use another TV’s settings as model-specific examples, not universal values. Menu labels, luminance, tone mapping, and calibration can vary by model, firmware, and individual panel. In particular, do not copy another unit’s multipoint white-balance or service-menu values blindly.

Do I need a colorimeter to set up my OLED TV?

No colorimeter is needed for the basic setup described here: choosing an accurate preset and adjusting SDR luminance for your room. A colorimeter is a tool category for readers pursuing measured, panel-specific calibration; the cited guidance does not endorse a particular model or say one is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the best starting point, choose your TV’s accurate movie-oriented mode, set SDR luminance for your room, and let HDR use its own settings. Check HDMI format and source output settings when an external device’s HDR is missing, and use a game-specific mode for gaming. Treat published numbers and white-balance values as model- and unit-specific—not settings to copy blindly.
