To reduce burn-in risk on an OLED gaming monitor, enable its pixel-shift and static-content protections, let automatic panel maintenance finish, and avoid leaving the same bright game interface or desktop image on screen for long periods. On Windows, hide the taskbar and set the display to turn off when idle. These measures lower risk; no setting guarantees burn-in cannot occur.
How do I prevent burn-in on my OLED gaming monitor?
Burn-in risk is associated with prolonged display of static, high-contrast content. Fixed game elements such as a speedometer, crosshair, or health bar are examples Samsung identifies; desktop taskbars, logos, and toolbars can also remain in one place. A changing game scene does not necessarily move every interface element, so consider the HUD as well as the main image.

Enable panel-care features
In the OSD, look for a section called Panel Care, Screen Protection, OLED Care, or a similar name. Enable pixel movement, static-screen protection or screen saver, and logo dimming or detection if available. These features may shift the image slightly or reduce the brightness of fixed content; avoid disabling them simply because their operation is noticeable.

Let automatic maintenance complete
When the monitor requests screen optimization or starts a cleaning cycle, follow its prompt. Keep the monitor connected to power and do not interrupt an active cycle; Samsung says unplugging prevents the Screen Optimization described for its supported monitors from running.

Timing and behavior are model-specific. Samsung says its described Screen Optimization becomes available after four or more cumulative hours of use when the monitor is turned off and takes approximately 10–15 minutes. ASUS says Pixel Cleaning on the PG OLED series described takes about six minutes, begins when the monitor turns off, and stops if it is turned back on. These figures are manufacturer instructions for the named product families, not universal OLED schedules. Consult your manual for the exact cycle and any standby requirements.
Do not routinely start a lengthy manual Pixel Refresh just because the display is OLED. Samsung distinguishes automatic Screen Optimization from Pixel Refresh, which is available only on some models and is presented as a troubleshooting option when after-images appear. Use manual maintenance only as the manufacturer directs. See Samsung’s maintenance guidance and ASUS’s protection instructions.

Reduce static Windows desktop elements and idle time
Windows provides separate controls for a persistent taskbar, an unattended static desktop, and a display left on while idle. Set the options that match how you use the PC:
- Hide the taskbar: In Windows 11, right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, then select Automatically hide the taskbar. This removes a fixed desktop strip when it is not in use. Microsoft documents the option in Customize the Taskbar in Windows.
- Set a screen-off timeout: Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and choose when the display should turn off while idle. Microsoft does not prescribe a specific OLED timeout value; choose a period that suits your use. See Power settings in Windows 11.
- Use a screen saver for idle periods: Microsoft says a screen saver can help avoid prolonged static imagery on OLED displays. Configure one in Windows if you want an option that activates before the screen-off timeout; a screen saver and turning off the display address different idle conditions. See Configure a Screen Saver in Windows.
How should I handle games with a fixed HUD?
If a game keeps a bright HUD, logo, or status display in the same location across long sessions, use the monitor’s logo or static-content protections where available. When practical, vary the content or take a break from that fixed display rather than leaving it unchanged for extended periods. Samsung specifically notes that game interfaces can contribute to burn-in when they stay in the same place or a game is played for a prolonged time; neither Samsung nor ASUS defines a universally safe number of minutes or hours.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance, updated April 23, 2025, gives a racing-game speedometer and an action-game crosshair and health bar as examples of fixed interfaces. Read its OLED burn-in and image-retention troubleshooting guidance.
What if I see an after-image?
A temporary after-image and persistent visible burn-in are not the same diagnosis. Samsung lists Pixel Refresh as a possible troubleshooting step when after-images appear, but the feature is not available on every model. Follow your monitor’s instructions rather than repeatedly running manual refresh cycles, and contact the manufacturer if marks persist. A refresh cycle should not be treated as a promise to repair permanent damage. Samsung explains its model-dependent options in its troubleshooting guide.
What should I compare when choosing an OLED monitor?
For a desktop that will show fixed work or game elements for long sessions, compare the specific monitor’s protection controls and how its routine maintenance behaves. Warranty terms also matter, but must be checked for the exact model, region, and purchase conditions.
- Which protections are built in, and which can you configure?
- Does maintenance run automatically, require confirmation, or offer a manual option?
- Will your typical use involve long periods of fixed desktop or HUD content?
- What does the local warranty document actually cover for burn-in?
For example, MSI’s page for the MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24 lists OLED-care features and states a three-year OLED-panel warranty that includes burn-in coverage. That statement applies to the cited product page and may be subject to regional terms and sales conditions; it is not a warranty promise for all MSI monitors or markets.
