How to Set Up an OLED Gaming Monitor for PC Gaming

To set up an OLED gaming monitor, connect it to your graphics card using a cable and port supported by both devices, select the correct monitor input, then set the monitor’s native resolution and the highest available refresh rate in Windows. Enable adaptive sync or HDR only if your monitor, GPU, connection, and game support the feature. Keep the monitor’s own OLED-care protections enabled.

1. Check the monitor’s manual and connections

Before connecting anything, look up the exact monitor model’s specifications and setup instructions. Ports, supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations, HDR modes, adaptive-sync support, and panel-care features vary by model. For example, MSI’s MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24 specifications differ from those for the MSI MPG 272URX QD-OLED. LG provides the manual and quick guide for its 27GX704A-B support page.

Follow the manual for assembly and placement. Use the included cable if it supports the mode you want, and connect the monitor to an output on your graphics card rather than a motherboard video output when you intend to use the dedicated GPU. Match the GPU’s output to the monitor’s input and check that the connection supports the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.

There is no universal rule that DisplayPort is always better than HDMI. The MSI MPG 272URX, for example, specifies DisplayPort 2.1a with bandwidth up to 80Gbps and 4K at 240Hz without DSC; that is a specification for that model, not a general promise about every DisplayPort connection. Check the ports and supported modes for your own monitor and GPU before buying a replacement cable.

2. Select the monitor input

Turn on the monitor and PC. If the display does not show the PC automatically, open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD), choose its input or source control, and select the HDMI or DisplayPort input used for the connection. The exact menu label varies by model.

3. Set native resolution and refresh rate in Windows

  1. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display.
  2. Select the OLED monitor if more than one display is connected.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. Choose the monitor’s native resolution and the highest refresh rate offered for the current configuration.

Microsoft documents this refresh-rate control in its guide to changing the refresh rate in Windows. Available choices depend on the monitor, cable, GPU, connection, and system configuration. The monitor manufacturer’s specifications state the panel’s rated modes, but a particular mode may not appear in Windows if the rest of the connection does not support it.

For one model-specific example, MSI lists G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support for the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24. Those certifications and instructions should not be assumed to apply to other OLED monitors.

5. Configure HDR for your monitor and games

Check the manual and specifications to confirm that your monitor and chosen connection support the HDR mode you intend to use. Then follow the current controls for your monitor, Windows, graphics software, and game. HDR behavior and available settings are model- and game-dependent; there is no universal brightness or calibration value that suits every OLED monitor.

As an example of why model details matter, MSI lists DisplayHDR True Black 400 for the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24. That specification describes that monitor, not all OLED displays.

6. Keep OLED-care features active

Use the built-in protections and maintenance routine specified in your monitor’s manual. Depending on the model, these may include pixel shifting, screen or pixel refresh, static-image brightness reduction, boundary detection, and taskbar or logo detection. MSI describes several such functions under OLED Care 2.0 for the MAG 272UP QD-OLED X24; features and procedures differ across products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These tools are intended to manage risks associated with static screen elements, but they are not a guarantee against burn-in. Do not copy another monitor’s pixel-refresh schedule: follow your own manufacturer’s guidance.

7. Choose an image mode and adjust to taste

Start with the monitor’s intended gaming or HDR picture mode, then make adjustments according to the manual and your preferences. LG lists LG Calibration Studio software on the 27GX704A-B support page, but ordinary setup does not establish a need for calibration software or a colorimeter. If measured color accuracy is a specific goal, treat calibration hardware as an optional advanced tool rather than a prerequisite.

If the expected resolution or refresh rate is missing

  • Recheck that the cable connects the graphics card directly to the monitor and that both ends use the intended ports.
  • Consult the monitor manual and manufacturer specifications for the resolution and refresh rate supported by that specific input.
  • Return to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the correct screen, and review the available refresh rates.
  • If the mode remains unavailable, check the GPU maker’s current instructions and the monitor’s documented requirements; do not assume a replacement cable or a particular port will solve it without confirming compatibility.
