Yes—you can run AI models locally and use them offline on a 2026 Mac mini M6, provided you download the model files and configure a compatible app while the Mac is online. The M6 can be configured with up to 32GB of unified memory and 2TB of internal storage. If your priority is more memory for larger or heavier workloads, Apple’s M5 Pro Mac mini offers up to 64GB and 8TB.

Local inference means the model runs on the Mac; it does not, by itself, establish that the computer or every app has no network traffic. The setup below includes a practical offline check and explains what it can—and cannot—tell you about privacy.

Choose a Mac mini configuration for the workload

Memory capacity, storage, and budget are the main configuration decisions. Apple lists these as configure-to-order options; plan for the memory you need when purchasing rather than assuming you can add unified memory later.

When the M6 is a sensible fit

The M6 is the more compact choice in this comparison for a local model hub where 32GB of unified memory and up to 2TB of internal storage meet your needs. It has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, according to Apple’s technical specifications. Those specifications do not establish which model will fit comfortably or how quickly it will respond: Apple has not published an independently verified M6 model-size or speed matrix in the cited materials.

When to consider the M5 Pro

Consider the M5 Pro if 64GB of unified memory or up to 8TB of internal storage matters more than the lower M6 entry price. Apple positions it for larger local AI models, but the available product information does not provide an independent, model-by-model M6 versus M5 Pro fit comparison. Choose based on the capacity you need, not an assumed performance multiplier.

Account for storage and setup gear

Model files, documents, and other local data use storage, so compare the Mac’s available capacity with the files you intend to keep on it. An external USB-C or Thunderbolt SSD is an option for a larger model collection or backups; Apple lists three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the M6. A display, keyboard, and mouse are only necessary if you do not already have compatible peripherals. No particular accessory has been tested or endorsed here.

Understand what Apple’s performance figures mean

Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement claims “up to 4x faster AI performance” for the M6 Mac mini versus the M4 Mac mini. It also claims “up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio” versus the M1 Mac mini, and up to 4.8x versus M4. These are Apple’s maximum comparisons under its stated test conditions—not independent results or a promise for a particular model, quantization, context length, runtime version, or concurrent workload.

Apple describes the M6 as capable of running local models and other on-device AI tasks. The published claims do not answer the practical question of whether a particular model will fit or meet your expectations. Check the intended model’s requirements and file size in the runtime you plan to use, then test it on your own workload.

Install a local model app and download files before disconnecting

A beginner-friendly route is LM Studio. Its documentation describes offline chat with a downloaded model, document chat using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and a local inference server after the required model files are present. That describes the documented behavior of this application, not every AI tool or every integration. Software and documentation can change, so check LM Studio’s current documentation when installing.

  1. While online, install the application or runtime. Complete any setup needed for the app you choose. An account sign-in, update check, or model catalogue may need a connection even if later inference can run offline.
  2. Download the intended model files. Confirm the files are stored on the Mac or on storage that will remain connected. Make sure the chosen app recognizes the files as a local model.
  3. Run a simple prompt while online. Confirm the model loads and responds before changing network settings. Note any app features you plan to use, such as document chat or a local server.
  4. Test document chat with a non-sensitive file, if needed. Confirm the app can retrieve information from that document. LM Studio’s documentation says document processing for its RAG feature stays on the machine; do not apply that statement to other applications without checking their behavior.
  5. Disconnect the network and repeat the tests. Turn Wi-Fi off in System Settings and unplug Ethernet, if connected. Then try the prompt and document workflow again. This checks whether your chosen setup works without a network connection at that moment; it is not a comprehensive audit of the Mac or app.

Keep privacy claims within what local inference establishes

With local inference, the model’s prompt processing takes place on the Mac rather than being sent to a remote model service. That does not prove that the whole machine or application has zero network traffic. Model downloads, updates, telemetry, account sign-in, and third-party integrations may still use the network unless disabled or otherwise controlled.

If you enable an inference server, keep it bound to localhost unless you intentionally need another device to connect and have configured appropriate network controls. Do not make an unauthenticated endpoint available to a wider network. The fact that an app offers a local server is not, on its own, a secure remote-access design.

A disconnected-network test can show that a particular task works while the Mac is offline. It cannot establish that the app has no telemetry under other conditions, that every workflow keeps data local, or that the computer is air-gapped. Likewise, local execution does not resolve model-license obligations or every question about software data retention.

Choose a runtime according to how you plan to use it

LM Studio is an application-oriented starting point for downloading and chatting with local models. Apple’s MLX project is an array framework for machine learning on Apple silicon; MLX is an underlying framework, not a complete end-user setup on its own. Using it requires a compatible inference tool and model format.

A 2025 preprint by Rajesh and co-authors compared MLX, MLC-LLM, Ollama, llama.cpp, and PyTorch MPS on a Mac Studio with an M2 Ultra and 192GB of unified memory, using Qwen 2.5 variants. In those tested conditions, MLX had the highest sustained generation throughput, MLC-LLM had lower time-to-first-token at moderate prompt sizes, llama.cpp was efficient for lightweight single-stream use, and Ollama emphasized developer ergonomics but lagged in throughput and time-to-first-token. That study used a substantially different machine from the M6 mini; it is useful context for runtime trade-offs, not an M6 ranking or performance forecast.

Apple’s description is a product statement, not a privacy assessment

In Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement, chief hardware officer Johny Srouji said: “Mac mini has always been our most versatile Mac. Whether it’s being used as a home computer, powering a professional studio, or as an always-on agentic device, it’s the little Mac that can do it all.” It is Apple’s product description; it does not certify a particular offline configuration or privacy outcome.
