You can keep a YouTube Live channel running from an India-region VPS by sending a continuous encoded feed from the server to YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest address. NGINX RTMP can be part of that pipeline, but do not assume that an NGINX RTMP module can itself make the encrypted outbound connection: verify the exact build’s TLS/RTMPS support or use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder such as FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and RTMPS API requirements describe the relevant connection settings.
How the 24/7 VPS setup works
A VPS does not create a continuous broadcast by itself. It must receive or generate a video-and-audio feed, keep that feed running, and send it to YouTube. The conceptual pipeline is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Media or camera/feed → encoder → optional NGINX RTMP relay on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The encoder produces the stream. NGINX may accept a contribution stream from another machine and relay it onward, but an RTMP module’s support for RTMP, HLS, or DASH does not establish that it can push to YouTube over RTMPS. Confirm TLS support, the correct endpoint and path, and TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) behavior for the exact module/build. If that cannot be verified, use a separate encoder that supports YouTube RTMPS.

Choose relay or encoding
- Relay: The VPS forwards already encoded media. This generally uses less CPU than encoding or transcoding, but still requires dependable network egress.
- Encode or transcode: The VPS creates or changes the video stream. This adds sustained CPU demand, which depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings.
- Hybrid: An encoder sends a local contribution stream to NGINX, which relays it to YouTube. This can separate ingest from outbound delivery, but adds configuration and another point of failure.
These workload differences are engineering considerations, not benchmarks for a particular VPS provider. NGINX’s official RTMP module documentation describes RTMP, HLS, and DASH streaming and installation of an NGINX Plus dynamic module package; it is not a compatibility matrix for every open-source third-party build.
Before you install anything
Confirm YouTube account and stream details
- Check that your YouTube account is currently eligible to go live and that Live Control Room lets you create or use a stream.
- Use the stream URL and key displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not rely on an old static ingest address or copy an example key.
- Plan to use RTMPS. YouTube’s API documentation specifies port 443 and a valid endpoint/path; the hostname also matters for TLS SNI.
- Decide whether the VPS will relay a pre-encoded feed or perform encoding/transcoding. The choice affects CPU needs and which software must support RTMPS.
YouTube notes that SSL errors can result when a client uses cleartext RTMP or the wrong server or port. Keep the account-specific URL and key together securely, and test the actual connection before relying on it.
Check the VPS provider’s terms and network limits
There is no universal VPS size for this job. Before selecting a plan, ask the provider about sustained CPU policy, outbound transfer allowance, network limits or traffic shaping, region, support, and acceptable-use rules. Verify outbound connectivity to the current YouTube RTMPS endpoint and port. A nearby India region may be a sensible choice for an India-based workflow, but geography alone does not establish route quality or stability.

Get the current RTMPS address and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s settings and select or reveal the RTMPS server URL and stream key.
- Copy the exact values into the encoder that will send the outgoing stream. Preserve the endpoint path and hostname; do not substitute a generic URL.
- Store the key as a secret. Do not put it in public logs, screenshots, or an exposed configuration repository. If another machine publishes to NGINX, restrict who can publish to that relay.
YouTube’s Live API represents ingestion with primary and backup RTMPS addresses and resolution/frame-rate information. Use the current values associated with your stream rather than hard-coding assumptions. See YouTube’s liveStreams resource documentation.

Match encoder settings to the video
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, supports RTMP/RTMPS; lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; allows frame rates up to 60 fps; and specifies AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate to the resolution, frame rate, codec, and corresponding row in YouTube’s current table; the examples below are H.264 recommendations, not guarantees of stability or VPS sizing prescriptions.
| Video format | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
Check YouTube’s current encoder settings page for the full bitrate table and any changes. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured source feed.
Estimate bandwidth and choose VPS capacity
Calculate sustained transfer from bitrate
For a continuous stream, approximate video transfer per day as bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 GB. This uses decimal gigabytes and excludes protocol overhead; actual provider transfer accounting may differ. For example, a 10 Mbps feed is about 108 GB of video payload per day, or about 3.24 TB over 30 days before overhead. Add headroom for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any other traffic, then compare the total with the VPS plan’s recurring transfer allowance.
NIC, the National Informatics Centre of the Government of India, says its webcast service requires dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream and asks users to verify outbound RTMP port 1935 access. That figure is specific to NIC’s webcast/venue service context; it is not a sizing recommendation for every YouTube resolution, a VPS plan, or YouTube RTMPS on port 443. For this setup, size egress from the selected encoder bitrate and verify the actual YouTube endpoint and port.

CPU depends on what the VPS does
A relay forwarding an already encoded stream generally needs less CPU than software encoding or transcoding. No provider sizing benchmark or tested VPS plan is established here, so do not choose a plan from a generic “24/7 streaming” label alone. Confirm the provider’s resource policies and test the actual workload under sustained operation.
Test and operate the stream continuously
- Run an upload-speed test from the VPS or the encoder’s network path, then compare sustainable upload capacity with the chosen bitrate and overhead.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream using representative audio, motion, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends testing before a real broadcast with content similar to the planned stream.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the test is running. Confirm that the incoming resolution, frame rate, and bitrate behave as intended.
- Run a sustained test long enough to expose network interruptions, resource limits, and reconnect behavior. Check encoder and NGINX logs for repeated disconnects or errors.
- Only after the path is stable, configure process supervision and restart behavior appropriate to the chosen encoder and relay. Test recovery deliberately before leaving the channel unattended.
YouTube specifically recommends monitoring stream health during the event. A successful initial handshake is not proof that a VPS route, provider transfer allowance, or unattended restart setup will remain reliable around the clock.
Protect the stream and its content
- Protect the stream key: Treat it like a password. Limit access to the machine and configuration containing it, keep it out of public repositories and logs, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Restrict NGINX publishing: If NGINX accepts a feed from a remote encoder, permit only the intended publisher where practical and protect the ingest credentials. Do not leave a public relay open for unauthorized publishing.
- Use content you have rights to stream: A 24/7 loop does not exempt music, video, or other material from copyright rules. Review YouTube’s current policies and ensure you have rights to the entire continuous feed.
- Check monetization separately: Permission to upload or stream material does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Repetitive or reused content may be assessed under YouTube’s monetization policies.
For a preflight review, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist; it is a planning aid, not legal advice or a YouTube policy determination.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an SSL or connection error | Cleartext RTMP was used, or the endpoint, port, path, hostname, or TLS/SNI behavior is wrong. | Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; confirm port 443, the endpoint path, and hostname handling in the selected encoder/build. |
| NGINX accepts a local feed but YouTube never receives it | The module may accept RTMP without supporting outbound RTMPS/TLS push. | Verify the exact module implementation and TLS capability. If uncertain, send to YouTube through a separate RTMPS-capable encoder. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or instability | Encoder bitrate may not match the chosen format, or available sustained upload may be insufficient. | Use the relevant YouTube bitrate row, CBR, the recommended two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and retest on the actual route. |
| Stream starts, then drops or repeatedly reconnects | Route instability, provider limits, process failure, or insufficient resources may interrupt the feed. | Review YouTube health messages and encoder/NGINX logs; check provider egress and resource policies; test supervision and reconnection before unattended use. |
| Remote encoder cannot publish to NGINX | Network reachability, publish permissions, or relay configuration may be wrong. | Check that the intended publisher can reach the relay and that publish access is restricted to authorized sources; never expose the YouTube key as a workaround. |
| Transfer allowance is exhausted or costs rise unexpectedly | A continuous bitrate consumes recurring outbound transfer; the plan’s accounting may include overhead or other traffic. | Estimate transfer from the actual bitrate, compare with the provider’s allowance and accounting rules, and include overhead and other workloads. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that avoids maintaining an encoder-and-relay VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it runs the uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI works as well as cards. See StreamNeo or start the free day.

FAQ
Can NGINX RTMP push to YouTube RTMPS?
Possibly, depending on the exact module/build and its outbound TLS, endpoint, and SNI handling. The RTMP label alone does not confirm RTMPS support. Verify the implementation or use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder.
Can I stream to YouTube 24/7 from a VPS?
A VPS can host the encoder or relay for a continuous feed, provided the account, content, provider terms, resources, and network path support the workload. Test the actual stream and verify current YouTube eligibility and policies before relying on it.
Does the NIC bandwidth figure apply to YouTube RTMPS?
No general application is established: NIC’s 2–4 Mbps figure is for its own webcast service context and its page refers to outbound RTMP port 1935. YouTube RTMPS setup uses the account’s current endpoint; verify that endpoint and size bandwidth from your chosen bitrate.
