How to set up an LG UltraGear OLED gaming monitor for your PC

Set up an LG UltraGear OLED by matching the exact monitor model, graphics-card output, cable and Windows refresh-rate setting. The UltraGear OLED name covers several displays with different resolutions, ports, refresh rates and menus, so a procedure that works for one model may not unlock the advertised mode on another.

Identify the model printed on the monitor, download its LG owner’s manual and quick guide, assemble the display as shown, connect the video cable directly to the graphics card, choose a supported refresh rate in Windows, and confirm the incoming rate in the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD). Configure HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), Adaptive-Sync, G-SYNC, FreeSync and OLED-care features only from instructions for that model.

1. Identify the exact UltraGear OLED model first

Find the complete model number on the rear label, the box, your purchase record or the monitor’s support menu. Include every suffix, such as 27GX790A-B.AUS; similarly named displays can have different ports and timing limits. Open the LG support page for your region and download the owner’s manual and quick guide before connecting anything.

The U.S. support pages below illustrate why the model number matters:

Model listing LG headline specification What it means for setup
27GX790A-B.AUS “27 Inch UltraGear OLED QHD 1440P 480Hz 0.03ms” Use the manual for the exact port capabilities and supported timings. A high headline rate still depends on the complete PC signal path.
27GX790B-B (model name shown in LG product material) QHD 540Hz or HD 720Hz dual mode, 0.02ms Dual-mode displays can expose different resolutions and refresh-rate combinations. Select the mode documented for your exact suffix and firmware.
27GX704A-B.AUS “27 Inch UltraGear Glossy OLED QHD 1440p 240Hz 0.03ms” Do not apply a 480Hz, 540Hz or 720Hz procedure to this 240Hz listing.

These are LG-listed model specifications, not independent measurements. Regional availability, firmware and menus can differ. If the label on your monitor does not exactly match a page, search LG’s regional support site for the complete label instead of relying on a similar product name.

2. Prepare the monitor, PC and documentation

Download the right documents

Save the owner’s manual and quick guide locally or keep the support page open on another device. The manual identifies which input supports each resolution and refresh rate, explains the OSD layout, and specifies assembly, VESA and software details. The quick guide covers the supplied stand or mounting sequence. The support pages reviewed here provide these downloads, but physical screw sizes and detailed assembly steps vary by model and should not be guessed.

Check the PC before you assemble

  • Confirm that the graphics card, not only the processor’s integrated graphics, has an output capable of the mode you want.
  • Check the graphics card’s connector type and the monitor input listed in the manual.
  • Install a current graphics driver supplied through your normal PC or GPU support channel before troubleshooting refresh rates.
  • Plan a direct connection from the graphics card to the monitor. Avoid an unverified dock, splitter, receiver or adapter while establishing the maximum mode.
  • Provide a stable desk or a compatible VESA arm rated for the display. Keep the panel protected while attaching the stand or mount.

Position the OLED safely

Follow the quick guide while the panel is supported on a clean, padded surface. Do not press on the OLED face, lift the display by the panel, or improvise fasteners. Leave the ventilation clear and place the monitor where the power and video cables are not sharply bent. If you use a VESA mount, use only the pattern and hardware specified in the exact manual.

3. Connect the correct video path

Connect a port on the dedicated graphics card to a compatible input on the monitor. Both ends of the link matter: the graphics-card output, monitor input, cable and selected resolution must support the same timing. If the cable supplied with the monitor is available, test it first; buying a replacement before checking the included cable can introduce an unnecessary variable.

LG’s general high-refresh guidance says a DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0-or-higher cable may be required for higher rates, but it also warns that support varies by model. Those interface thresholds are not a guarantee that every resolution or the model’s maximum refresh rate will work through every cable or GPU.

Check Action Why it matters
Monitor input Use the input named in the model manual for the desired timing, then select that input in the monitor OSD. Different inputs on one display may have different bandwidth or feature support.
Graphics-card output Plug the cable into the graphics card’s port, not a motherboard video output that may be inactive or limited. The GPU determines available output resolutions, refresh rates and synchronization features.
Cable Start with the supplied cable. If it is missing or cannot carry the documented mode, choose a cable whose specification and certification match both endpoints. A cable label alone does not establish that a particular resolution and rate will work.
Adapters and docks Remove them while testing. Reintroduce one only after the direct connection works and its specifications are known. Each conversion or intermediate device can limit bandwidth or disable VRR.

Power on and select the input

  1. Connect the monitor’s power cable and switch it on.
  2. Connect the video cable firmly at both ends.
  3. Open the monitor OSD and choose the input used by the graphics card, if automatic input selection does not find it.
  4. Allow Windows to finish detecting the display before changing refresh settings.

4. Choose the refresh rate in Windows

Windows selects the refresh rate sent by the PC; the monitor OSD can then confirm what it is receiving. In current Windows settings, use this path:

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Open System > Display > Advanced display.
  3. Under Display information, select the LG monitor if more than one display is connected.
  4. Open Choose a refresh rate and select a mode listed as supported for the monitor, cable and PC.
  5. Accept the change and check the monitor’s own information screen for the incoming resolution and refresh rate.

Do not select a number solely because it appears in a product title. A mode is usable only when the monitor, cable, graphics-card output and driver can negotiate it together. For a dual-mode model, changing resolution may expose a different set of refresh rates.

If the advertised rate is missing

  • Confirm the cable is connected to the graphics card and to the input specified by the manual.
  • Try the supplied cable before substituting another one.
  • Read the manual’s supported-mode table for the exact resolution, color format and refresh-rate combination.
  • Check the graphics card’s maximum output and the driver’s display controls.
  • Test with one monitor connected directly, without a dock, splitter or receiver.
  • Power-cycle the monitor and PC after changing cables or inputs, then revisit Advanced display.

LG summarizes the dependency this way: “Higher refresh rates (such as 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, 240Hz, 350Hz, 480Hz, etc.) may or may not be supported depending on the cable connection (a DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 or higher cable is required), the performance of the PC (including CPU specifications and graphics card capabilities), and the user environment.” Read the full vendor guidance at LG’s support article on enabling higher refresh rates, and use your model’s manual for the definitive mode list.

5. Confirm the signal in the monitor OSD

After Windows applies the setting, open the monitor’s information or input-status page. Look for the current input, resolution and refresh rate. The label and menu location differ among UltraGear OLED models, so follow the exact manual rather than assuming that every OSD uses the same wording.

If Windows reports a high rate but the OSD shows a lower input rate, the link has not negotiated the mode you intended. Recheck the input, cable and GPU output, then select a supported combination again. If both Windows and the OSD show the same rate, the basic video connection is established.

6. Configure HDR, VRR and gaming features by model

HDR

Enable HDR in Windows and in the game only after the monitor is operating at the desired resolution and refresh rate. The exact OSD toggle, picture mode behavior and color controls are model-specific. Use the owner’s manual and the game’s HDR instructions; do not copy a setting from a different UltraGear OLED and call it universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variable refresh rate and synchronization

Adaptive-Sync, G-SYNC and FreeSync labels, supported ranges and activation steps depend on the monitor firmware and the graphics-card driver. Check the manual, enable the corresponding feature in the monitor OSD if required, and then use the GPU control panel or Windows display controls applicable to your hardware. Verify the result in a game or the GPU’s own indicator rather than assuming that a menu label proves VRR is active.

Picture modes and response options

Game presets, response-time controls, black stabilizers and crosshairs can alter latency or image processing. LG’s material supplied for this setup does not establish one universally best combination. Start with the neutral or default profile documented by your model, change one option at a time, and keep a note of settings that you may need to restore.

OLED care

OLED-care functions and their names differ by model. Follow the monitor’s prompts and manual for pixel-care, panel-protection and cleaning procedures. Do not invent a fixed interval for a maintenance cycle or force a routine that the manual does not describe. Keep the panel clean only with the materials and method LG specifies for that display.

7. Install LG software only when it is useful

Basic video output and Windows refresh-rate selection do not normally require LG software. Your model’s support page may list optional downloads such as LG Switch or LG Calibration Studio. Availability and versions change, and a utility listed for one model may not be intended for another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the exact model’s LG regional support page.
  2. Read the software description and supported-model list.
  3. Install only a current package that matches your operating system and monitor.
  4. Restart if the installer requests it, then confirm that Windows and the OSD still show the intended mode.

Use software for the function it documents—such as input switching or calibration—not as a substitute for a compatible cable, GPU output or supported timing.

8. Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely causes Order of checks
No image Wrong input, loose cable, inactive motherboard output, adapter or power problem. Confirm power, select the used input, reseat both ends, connect directly to the graphics card and test the supplied cable.
Only a low refresh rate appears Unsupported cable path, wrong port, GPU limitation, driver issue or an unsupported resolution-rate pairing. Read the manual’s timing table, verify the GPU port, remove intermediaries, update the driver through the normal vendor channel and revisit Advanced display.
High rate in Windows but lower rate in the OSD The negotiated input mode differs from the Windows selection. Check the monitor input-status page, then match the cable, input and resolution to a documented mode.
HDR option is unavailable Windows is not detecting HDR for the current link, the monitor is in an incompatible mode, or the model requires an OSD setting. Establish the documented resolution and refresh rate first, then follow the model manual and GPU/Windows HDR controls.
VRR does not activate Unsupported port combination, feature disabled in the OSD or driver, or a mode outside the documented VRR range. Check the manual’s supported range, enable the matching synchronization option at both ends and test with a compatible game.
Intermittent black screens or signal drops Marginal cable, loose connector, adapter or a mode beyond the link’s capability. Return to the supplied cable and direct connection, lower to a documented mode, and isolate one component at a time.

If a change leaves the display unusable, wait for Windows to revert the setting or reconnect a known-working display, then select a lower documented mode. Do not repeatedly force an unsupported timing when the manual does not list it.

9. Choosing between DisplayPort and HDMI without guessing

There is no universal “best” connector for every UltraGear OLED. Choose the path that matches the exact monitor manual and the ports on your graphics card. Compare the complete link rather than a cable’s marketing label.

Decision point What to compare Practical choice
Required mode Resolution and refresh-rate combination, including any dual-mode option. Use the port and timing explicitly listed for that mode.
Port versions Version and bandwidth at both the GPU and monitor. The lower-capability endpoint governs the usable mode.
Cable capability Specification, length and certification appropriate to both endpoints. Start with the included cable; replace it only when the documented link cannot be achieved or it is missing.
GPU support Output connector, driver support and maximum resolution/refresh combination. Check the graphics-card documentation rather than assuming that a modern monitor guarantees the same rate from every PC.
Feature requirements HDR, VRR, Adaptive-Sync, G-SYNC or FreeSync support on the selected input. Use the combination the monitor manual and GPU controls identify as compatible.

10. Final setup checklist

  • Exact model and regional suffix recorded.
  • Owner’s manual and quick guide downloaded from LG.
  • Stand or VESA mount assembled according to the supplied guide, with the panel protected.
  • Monitor connected directly to a capable graphics-card output.
  • Included cable tested before purchasing a replacement.
  • Windows path used: System > Display > Advanced display > Display information > Choose a refresh rate.
  • Monitor OSD checked for the actual incoming resolution and refresh rate.
  • HDR, VRR, synchronization and OLED-care features configured from the exact model manual.
  • Optional LG software installed only when the model’s support page lists it and its function is needed.

The reliable setup is the one documented for your exact UltraGear OLED and achieved by the complete signal path. Treat the advertised refresh rate as a supported possibility to verify—not a result that a cable or software setting can guarantee on every PC.
