To stream from an Ubuntu 24.04 cloud VM to YouTube, install FFmpeg, create or select a YouTube Live event, copy its current RTMPS server URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with settings matched to your source and YouTube’s encoder guidance. The VM must have enough sustained CPU capacity to encode the video and enough stable outbound bandwidth for the selected bitrate. The commands below are starting patterns, not tested configurations; rehearse with your own VM and source before relying on them for a live event.
1. Choose and prepare an Indian-region VM
Select an Ubuntu Server 24.04 image in an Indian region offered by the specific VM product you plan to use. AWS lists Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2), with Hyderabad marked opt-in in its regions table: AWS Regions. Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) on its locations pages, but a location entry for Cloud Workstations does not guarantee that a particular Compute Engine machine type is available there: Google Cloud Workstations locations. Check the service-specific regional availability and capacity before choosing an instance.

Set up SSH access and the provider’s firewall or security rules. For this workflow, the VM needs the input video if you are streaming a file, permission to make outbound connections to YouTube, and sufficient CPU and network capacity for the chosen encoding profile. Region alone does not establish instance availability, bandwidth guarantees, or a best provider.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders | less
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API setup guide uses sudo apt install ffmpeg as an installation example: Before you begin | Live Stream API. The exact package version and enabled codecs can vary with the image and repository state, so check the encoders reported by the binary rather than assuming a specific build.
3. Create the YouTube Live event and get its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to run.
- Copy that event’s current server URL and stream key. Use the endpoint shown for the event; do not substitute another service’s ingest URL.
- Where YouTube offers an RTMPS endpoint, use it. RTMPS encrypts RTMP transport with TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends it for secure delivery: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put a real key in a public article, shell history, screenshots, support logs, or a public repository. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s live settings. If FFmpeg seems to connect but then stalls or times out, check that the selected endpoint expects RTMPS and that the client is not attempting cleartext RTMP; protocol mismatch can cause timeout-like behavior: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

4. Choose encoder settings for your stream
Choose settings based on the source, desired resolution and frame rate, and the VM’s sustained capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. For H.264, its recommended bitrates include:
| Profile | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated H.264 profiles, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode or deliver them. Use YouTube’s full, current table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with a recommended audio bitrate of 128 kbps. Its recommended advanced SDR settings include progressive scan and Rec. 709 color.

Make sure the VM’s stable outbound capacity can sustain the total stream bitrate with room for variation. A best-case speed-test peak is not a dependable target for a continuous stream. The right instance size also depends on input resolution and frame rate, codec, software-encoding preset, and any concurrent work; no single VM size or upload figure can be specified without those details.
5. Send a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
For a prerecorded file, this illustrative pattern reads at the file’s natural playback rate, loops it, encodes H.264 and AAC, and publishes in an FLV container:

This is an example command structure, not a tested YouTube command or a universal profile. Replace the destination with the exact endpoint-and-key form shown by YouTube, and choose bitrate, output resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval to match the event and source. The example’s -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP: at 30 fps that is a two-second interval. At another frame rate, calculate the GOP for the intended interval. The example’s 4 Mbps video bitrate is the YouTube recommendation for H.264 at 720p30; do not use it unchanged for a different profile. Add scaling or frame-rate conversion only if needed, and verify the resulting format in Live Control Room.

Keep a real key out of shell history and shared logs. One way to reduce accidental exposure is to place the destination in a restricted-permission configuration file or environment-managed secret rather than pasting the key into a command that will be retained in history; ensure any service or logging setup does not reveal it.

If the source is a live camera or capture feed
The file command above does not acquire a camera. A headless cloud VM normally cannot access a camera attached to your local computer unless you separately arrange a suitable input feed or hardware access. Substitute an FFmpeg input appropriate to the device and environment, then apply the same output-profile, endpoint, testing, and monitoring checks. AWS’s FFmpeg example demonstrates a similar RTMPS output pattern, but its destination is for AWS IVS, not YouTube; use it only as syntax context and use YouTube’s event URL and key for this workflow: Step 4: Set Up Streaming Software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Rehearse, monitor, and keep the process running
- Test with representative motion and audio before the event. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, received resolution and frame rate, stream-health status, and audio. Confirm image orientation and aspect ratio.
- Watch FFmpeg output along with VM CPU, memory, and network use. If encoding lags, reduce the workload or choose a more capable VM; if delivery is unstable, investigate sustained outbound capacity and network conditions.
- For long-running operation, decide how you will supervise the FFmpeg process, restart it after a failure, and retain useful logs without exposing the stream key. Process supervision is an implementation choice, not a guarantee that a stream will never disconnect.
7. Compare VM choices by the constraints that matter
Before committing to a region or instance, verify the actual machine type and capacity for the service, test the software-encoding preset against your source, and check stable outbound throughput and egress billing. Also account for storage if the video file lives on the VM, plus any latency or administrative requirements. The region listings above identify example locations, but do not establish provider pricing, current capacity for a specific machine, bandwidth guarantees, or a universally best provider.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos without administering an FFmpeg process on your VM, StreamNeo is a managed option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
