Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can publish an FFmpeg stream to YouTube from an AWS Lightsail Linux server in India by creating an instance in Asia Pacific (Mumbai), installing an FFmpeg build that supports your source and output protocol, and sending the stream to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The connection to YouTube is outbound; you do not need to open an inbound RTMP port for this workflow. Test the stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- An AWS account with access to Lightsail and a Linux instance in the Mumbai region.
- A YouTube channel that can create a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The source video or live input, and a target resolution, frame rate and codec that it can sustain.
- An FFmpeg build with the required encoder or stream-copy support and, preferably, RTMPS support.
- Time to test the complete stream using representative audio and motion before the intended broadcast.
This is a setup guide, not a tested Lightsail sizing recommendation. The suitable instance depends on whether FFmpeg transcodes or simply copies an already compatible stream, as well as the source format, output settings and required uptime.

1. Create a Lightsail Linux instance in Mumbai
- Open the AWS Lightsail console and select Create instance.
- Choose Asia Pacific (Mumbai) as the region. AWS lists Mumbai as
ap-south-1. A nearby region can reduce latency, but Mumbai is not automatically the best choice for every source location or audience; choose based on your operational needs. AWS Lightsail region and Availability Zone documentation. - Choose Linux/Unix and an operating-system-only image, such as Ubuntu. Match the installation instructions you use later to the specific image and version you chose.
- Select a plan only after estimating CPU needs and outbound data. A transcoding workload needs encoding capacity; a stream-copy workload avoids video encoding work when the source already meets the target requirements. The official information cited here does not identify a universally sufficient plan.
- Name the instance and create it. Lightsail offers browser-based SSH as well as ordinary SSH access. Restrict SSH to trusted administrator addresses where practical.
2. Decide whether to attach a static IP
A Lightsail instance’s default public IPv4 address can change after a stop/start. If you want a stable address for administration or DNS, create a static IP in the instance’s region and attach it. AWS documents that a static IP has no charge while attached; check current AWS pricing if you detach it. A static IP is not required for FFmpeg to publish outbound to YouTube. 3. Install FFmpeg and check its capabilities
Connect to the server through Lightsail’s browser SSH or your SSH client, then install FFmpeg using the package manager and repositories appropriate to the selected operating-system image. Package names, versions and build features vary, so confirm what is installed rather than assuming a particular command or capability.

- Check that the build supports the codec you plan to use, such as H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1.
- Check that the build supports the intended output protocol. Prefer RTMPS when available and supported.
- Determine whether your workflow can copy the source streams or must decode and re-encode them. Do not select a high resolution or frame rate until the source and server can sustain it.
No single FFmpeg command is appropriate for every source: the input may be a file, capture device or another stream, and the correct options depend on whether you are copying or encoding video and audio. Build and test the command for your actual input and target before the broadcast.
4. Get the YouTube server URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or open the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream into your FFmpeg publishing configuration.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint when available and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube Help: encoder settings for live streaming.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public repository, article, screenshot or exposed shell transcript or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg configuration.

5. Match encoder settings to the stream
Use YouTube’s recommendations for the exact target resolution, frame rate and codec; do not extrapolate one row to a different format. Its published guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps video at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 720p30. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees about Lightsail performance. - Resolution and frame rate: Select a target that matches the intended viewing quality and that the source and instance can sustain.
- Video bitrate: Use the recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The two H.264 figures above apply specifically to 1080p30 and 720p30.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval as recommended, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio and advanced settings: Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen stream rather than assuming video settings alone are sufficient.
- Stream copy or transcode: Copying compatible source streams avoids encoding work; transcoding changes the stream and uses CPU. Validate that copied source codecs and parameters meet the target requirements.
6. Estimate bandwidth and Mumbai data transfer
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. That total includes audio as well as video. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health and any messages in Live Control Room while streaming. YouTube encoder settings.
Continuous streaming can produce substantial outbound data. AWS states that Lightsail instance plans in Mumbai have half the data-transfer allowance of plans in most other regions and that excess outbound transfer may be billed. Check the current allowance and pricing for the exact plan you are considering; the relative allowance statement does not determine your plan’s absolute included amount. AWS Lightsail pricing.
For a rough traffic estimate, multiply the stream’s total megabits per second by the seconds streamed, then divide by eight to estimate megabytes. Convert that estimate using AWS’s current billing units and allow for audio and protocol overhead. It is a planning calculation, not an AWS quote.

7. Keep the Lightsail firewall conservative
The instance firewall controls incoming connections to its public IP. Lightsail treats IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately, while outbound traffic is allowed by those firewalls. FFmpeg publishing to YouTube is outbound, so do not add a public inbound media or RTMP rule for this workflow. Allow SSH only from trusted administrator addresses where practical. 8. Test the stream before depending on it
- Start FFmpeg with the selected input, output URL, protected key and target settings.
- Confirm that FFmpeg remains connected and that YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Check for audio, motion, picture quality and stability using material representative of the intended broadcast.
- Watch stream-health messages and adjust the target or bitrate if the connection or processing cannot sustain it.
- Repeat the test after changing the source, codec, resolution, frame rate, instance or FFmpeg build.
Common problems and fixes
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the Live Control Room server URL and key match the selected event, the key has not been reset, and the FFmpeg build supports the output protocol. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when supported. Keep the key private; reset it if it may have been exposed.
The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health
Compare the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for that format. Check that upload bandwidth exceeds the total bitrate with the recommended 20% headroom, then test again with representative audio and movement.

FFmpeg cannot encode smoothly
If the command transcodes, the server must decode and encode in real time. Try a lower target or a compatible stream-copy workflow if the source already meets YouTube’s requirements. The available evidence does not establish which Lightsail plan can handle a particular workload, so validate performance on the selected instance.
The instance address changes
A default public IPv4 may change after stopping and starting the instance. Attach a Lightsail static IP if you need a stable address for administration or DNS.

Estimate outbound usage from the total bitrate and broadcast duration, and review the current Mumbai allowance and plan pricing. Mumbai’s regional allowance is lower relative to plans in most other regions; do not assume another region’s allowance applies.
