Your Airtel plan name alone does not establish what bitrate your connection can sustain; test from the computer and network path you will actually use.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to its Live Control Room.
- FFmpeg installed with the video and audio encoders you plan to use. The example below uses
libx264and AAC; encoder availability depends on your FFmpeg build. - A video file to stream, or a separate FFmpeg input setup for your camera or capture device.
- A stable broadband connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen stream bitrate plus spare bandwidth.
Airtel offers fixed-line and high-speed broadband services in India, but the provider and plan do not tell you the upload performance at your address or at the time of your stream. Router, Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, and other people using the connection can all affect available upload. Measure it rather than choosing a resolution based on the advertised plan.

1. Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server or ingest URL and the stream key shown for that stream.
- Use the exact endpoint supplied in Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP; confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol and endpoint you choose.
In the FFmpeg command, the server URL and key are combined in the output destination. Treat the key like a password: do not post it in a script repository, screenshot, terminal recording, or public support request. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it wherever you configured the stream.

2. Measure Airtel upload capacity and leave headroom
Run an upload speed test on the same computer and network connection you plan to stream from. Test under representative conditions, ideally at a time when your household or workplace is normally busy. YouTube advises that upload capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. Other people and devices sharing the connection use some of that capacity too.

- Use the upload result, not the download result, when selecting a bitrate.
- Do not treat a single peak result as proof that the connection will stay stable for an entire broadcast.
- If you are using Wi-Fi, test from the exact location where the streaming computer will be. A temporary Ethernet connection to the router can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to instability; it cannot increase the capacity supplied by the broadband connection.
- If you send a primary and backup stream, include both in the total bandwidth you need.
For example, a stream with a 5 Mbps video target and 128 kbps audio uses more than 5 Mbps in total once audio and transport overhead are included. The 20% spare-capacity guidance is a minimum planning margin, not a guarantee against fluctuations; choose a bitrate comfortably below the stable capacity you observe.
3. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds that must not exceed four seconds. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 guidance, not an Airtel service specification. Minimum values are not assurances of reliable service; the recommended values are quality targets and require adequate sustained upload capacity.

These numbers are for H.264 video; YouTube’s recommended ranges differ for H.265 and AV1. Do not apply an H.264 bitrate figure to another codec. Select a profile your computer can encode in real time and your tested upload can carry with headroom. Higher resolution and frame rate can improve detail or motion smoothness, but they also raise encoding and network demands.
4. Send a video file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows the basic pattern for sending a file in real time to an RTMP server using -re and an FLV output. The following H.264/AAC example is an editable starting point for a 30 fps source, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or input will work unchanged:

Some YouTube configurations provide a server URL and key separately; in that case, construct the destination using the values shown there rather than assuming the example endpoint is universal. If your selected endpoint is RTMPS, use its exact URL and verify your FFmpeg build can connect to it.
-rereads a file at its native playback rate instead of sending it as fast as the computer can process it.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder; it must be available in your build.-b:vand-maxrateset the target and cap in this example. The 5 Mbps video target corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 minimum for 1080p30, not its recommended 14 Mbps target. It is only suitable if your source and connection can sustain the complete stream.-bufsize 10Msets the rate-control buffer in this example; it is not a substitute for upload headroom.-g 60 -keyint_min 60requests a 60-frame GOP cadence, or approximately two seconds at 30 fps. For another frame rate, adjust keyframe cadence to approximately two seconds and do not exceed four seconds.-c:a aac -b:a 128kencodes AAC audio at the example bitrate. Check your source audio and YouTube’s ingest requirements.
If the file is already encoded with compatible video and audio settings, stream-copy may avoid real-time transcoding. Only use it after checking the codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s requirements. Otherwise FFmpeg may pass through parameters that YouTube rejects or that do not match the profile you intend to send.

For a live camera or capture card, the input arguments are operating-system- and device-specific; the file command above cannot be pasted unchanged. Keep the output-side requirements in view: compatible codecs, a bitrate your measured connection can sustain, and the correct YouTube ingest destination.

- Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel and event.
- Use a representative test: include the kind of movement, detail, and audio the real stream will contain.
- Watch Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube detects the expected resolution and frame rate and reports healthy ingest.
- Keep Live Control Room’s stream-health diagnostics visible during the event and respond to warnings rather than assuming a running FFmpeg process means viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
A file can look acceptable in a local preview yet fail in the live output because the bitrate fluctuates, keyframes are too far apart, or the connection drops packets. A test helps expose those problems before the scheduled broadcast.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
FFmpeg only transports and encodes the material you give it; it does not grant permission to broadcast that material. Before streaming music, video, performances, or other third-party content, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the intended live use. A successful ingest test does not establish that the content is permitted under YouTube’s copyright rules or channel policies. Also consider whether your channel’s use of repeated or minimally changed material complies with the policies applicable to monetization and reused content; technical configuration cannot resolve those policy questions.
Troubleshooting: work from the stream outward

The available information does not establish a failure mode unique to Airtel. Diagnose the key and endpoint, local FFmpeg support, the router and network path, actual upload stability, and YouTube’s own stream-health messages before attributing an ingest problem to the provider.
