How to Set Up an Evercade Handheld and Start Playing Cartridges

The quickest reliable setup is: identify the exact Evercade model, charge it using that model’s instructions, insert a compatible cartridge before switching on, then select a game and choose Play. The button timing, Wi‑Fi menu, charging advice, display connections and support channel are not identical across the EXP, EXP-R, original Evercade Handheld and Super Pocket families. The detailed startup sequence below is for the EXP family; use your model’s manual whenever a menu or hardware detail differs.

Identify the handheld before you press anything

Look for the model name printed on the front, rear, box or supplied documentation. The common possibilities include the Evercade EXP, EXP-R and original Evercade Handheld, plus Super Pocket systems made by HyperMegaTech!. A cartridge may be compatible with several systems while the startup screens and ports are different, so treating every handheld as an EXP can lead to wrong charging or connection advice.

Use Blaze support material for Blaze Evercade devices and HyperMegaTech! support for Super Pocket models. If the name is worn off, compare the enclosure, screen and ports with the paperwork rather than guessing from the cartridge slot. Record the model before looking for firmware instructions; menu wording can change between models and firmware versions.

Why model identification changes the setup

  • The documented power-button and game-selection sequence is specifically an EXP-family procedure.
  • The EXP-R product information says it is handheld-only and has no TV or monitor output. The original EXP FAQ describes TV output for the EXP, so those instructions cannot be transferred to an EXP-R.
  • Charging requirements are not published identically for every model. An EXP FAQ gives a 5V USB charger rated from 0.5A to 3A, while the EXP-R product page confirms a USB-C cable in the box without stating charger-output requirements.
  • Firmware menus have been described as both Settings → System → Check for Update and Settings → System → Install Update in current references. Follow the wording shown on your own device.

Prepare the device and cartridge

Charge safely

Connect the supplied cable and allow the battery to charge before a long first session. The EXP-R listing identifies USB-C charging and includes a USB-C cable, but it does not specify the required charger output. Do not assume the EXP FAQ’s 5V, 0.5–3A figures apply to the EXP-R; confirm the requirement in EXP-R documentation if you need to select a separate charger. For any model, use an undamaged cable and stop if the connector, cable or device becomes unusually hot.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a suitable cartridge

Evercade support groups cartridges by case colour: red cases contain console collections, purple cases contain arcade collections and blue cases contain home-computer collections. The support reference says all three colours work on current Evercade systems running current firmware. Compatibility still depends on the particular handheld and its firmware, so check model-specific cartridge support when a game is not recognised.

Keep the cartridge dry and free of grit. Avoid forcing it into the slot; it should seat with steady, gentle pressure. If the cartridge has been stored loose, inspect its contacts under good light before inserting it.

How do I play games on the Evercade EXP?

The following sequence is the documented EXP-family flow. It is the clearest path for an EXP owner and a useful reference for an EXP-R owner, but the latter should follow any different on-screen prompt shown by the device.

  1. Insert the cartridge while the handheld is off. Push it fully into the slot without twisting. Starting with the cartridge installed gives the system the best chance of detecting it during boot.
  2. Hold the top power button for about two seconds. A brief tap may not start the handheld. Release the button when the startup screen appears.
  3. Browse the library with Left or Right on the D-pad. Move through the games on the inserted collection until the title you want is highlighted.
  4. Press A to open the selected game’s menu. The menu presents the available actions for that title.
  5. Highlight the Play icon and press A again. The game should load. If the collection offers a Last Save option, choose it to resume a previous session rather than starting from the beginning.

Once the game is running, use the handheld’s controls as you would during any later session. Save behavior belongs to the cartridge: the support reference says saves are stored on the cartridge, allowing them to move between compatible devices. Handle the cartridge as the save medium; removing it during a write or while the system is still active can risk losing progress.

Update firmware before troubleshooting compatibility

Firmware updates can be necessary for cartridge recognition and save compatibility. Connect the handheld to Wi‑Fi, open Settings, choose System, then select the update command shown by your model. One EXP FAQ calls the command Check for Update; another current-device support reference calls it Install Update. The difference is a reason to follow the label on your screen rather than hunt for an exact phrase from another model.

Wi‑Fi requirements in the current support reference

The current-device reference describes secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi support and excludes 5 GHz networks and open networks. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name, temporarily select or create a secured 2.4 GHz network. Enter the password exactly, then retry the system update. A failure to see a network does not by itself prove that the handheld is defective; the band and security type may be the cause.

When an update is especially important

Install the latest firmware offered for your model before judging a cartridge incompatible. The support reference specifically notes that current Evercade systems running current firmware support the cartridge colour groups described above. For save compatibility with the original Evercade Handheld, the EXP FAQ says firmware 2.0 or higher is required. That version condition applies to the original Handheld’s save compatibility, not automatically to every Evercade model.

Cartridge saves and moving between systems

Because saves are stored on the cartridge, you can continue a supported game on another compatible Evercade device by moving the cartridge with the save data intact. Compatibility is not unconditional: both systems should be supported for that cartridge and running appropriate firmware. The original Evercade Handheld’s save requirement of firmware 2.0 or higher is the specific threshold identified in the EXP FAQ.

Before removing a cartridge, leave the game and return to the system interface if the title uses an in-game save process. Do not pull the cartridge while the device is writing or while a save indicator is active. If you are moving a collection between systems, update each system first and keep the cartridge in its case when it is not installed.

What to do when a cartridge does not appear

Work through these checks in order. They address the common physical and startup causes without assuming that a second cartridge slot exists.

  1. Power the handheld off. Do not repeatedly pull and reinsert a cartridge while the game menu is active.
  2. Inspect the cartridge contacts. Look for dust, fibres or visible residue. Keep liquids away from the slot and cartridge; if contamination is substantial, use the cleaning method recommended in your model’s documentation.
  3. Remove and reinsert the cartridge. Seat it evenly and fully. Do not force a cartridge that meets resistance.
  4. Restart with the cartridge already inserted. Hold the power button for about two seconds on the EXP-family procedure, then wait for the library to load.
  5. Check firmware. Use the model’s Wi‑Fi update path and retry after the update completes.
  6. Test another known-compatible cartridge if available. This helps distinguish a cartridge problem from a slot or firmware problem, but it is not a substitute for checking the model’s compatibility list.
  7. Contact the correct support channel if the collection still does not appear. Use Blaze support for Blaze Evercade hardware and HyperMegaTech! support for Super Pocket hardware, and provide the exact model, firmware version and cartridge title.

Some support guidance suggests trying another slot. Apply that only to hardware with two cartridge slots; a single-cartridge handheld has no second slot to test.

EXP-R setup details you should not apply to every Evercade

The EXP-R product reference, accessed in 2026, lists the following specifications. They describe the EXP-R only, not a universal Evercade handheld standard.

EXP-R feature Published detail
Display 4.3-inch IPS panel, 800 × 480 resolution
Battery 3,000mAh
Estimated play time Approximately 4–5 hours; a product claim rather than an independent measurement
Charging USB-C; a USB-C cable is listed in the box
Wireless Wi‑Fi for firmware updates
Audio Stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack
External display No TV or monitor output

Battery life varies with brightness, volume, game and battery condition, so the 4–5-hour figure should be read as the manufacturer’s estimate. The NEON RETRO EXP-R bundle is listed with Tomb Raider Collection 1; the same product page says bundle contents can differ for the CLASSIC RETRO version or by retailer. Confirm the contents of your own box before expecting a particular collection.

EXP, EXP-R, original Handheld and Super Pocket: what to verify

These checks prevent the most damaging setup mistakes when you are following advice written for a different device.

Question Why it matters
What exact model is printed on the device? It determines the support channel, menu labels and hardware capabilities.
Which charging specification is documented? The EXP FAQ publishes 5V and 0.5–3A guidance, while the EXP-R page confirms USB-C and a cable but does not publish charger output.
Does the model have TV output? The EXP is described as supporting TV output; the EXP-R is described as handheld-only.
Which update command appears under Settings → System? Your device may display Check for Update or Install Update.
Which support organisation covers it? Blaze handles Blaze Evercade devices; HyperMegaTech! handles Super Pocket models.

Do not connect an EXP-R to a TV because an EXP guide mentions video output, and do not apply an EXP-R charger assumption to another model without documentation. Those are model-level differences, not optional settings.

A first-session checklist

  • Model name confirmed from the device, box or manual.
  • Battery charged with the model-appropriate cable and charger guidance.
  • Cartridge contacts and slot visibly clean.
  • Cartridge inserted before power-on.
  • Power button held for about two seconds on the EXP-family procedure.
  • Game selected with Left or Right, then opened with A.
  • Play icon selected and confirmed with A.
  • Wi‑Fi firmware check completed when compatibility or saves require it.
  • 2.4 GHz secured Wi‑Fi used when the device’s current support requirements apply.
  • Model-specific support contacted with the model, firmware and cartridge details if recognition still fails.

Common setup mistakes and their fixes

Using a five-gigahertz or open Wi‑Fi network

The current-device support reference describes secure 2.4 GHz support, not 5 GHz or open networks. Switch to a secured 2.4 GHz network before retrying the firmware update.

Starting with the cartridge outside the slot

The EXP-family instructions call for inserting the cartridge before powering on. Shut down, insert it, then restart so the library can detect the collection during boot.

Assuming every cartridge colour means a different console requirement

Red, purple and blue cases identify collection categories. The support reference says all colours work on current Evercade systems with current firmware; the colour alone is not a reason to reject a cartridge.

Expecting saves to be stored only in the handheld

The support reference says saves are stored on the cartridge. Keep the cartridge with the save and observe the firmware requirement for any older system, including the original Handheld’s stated 2.0-or-higher condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Looking for a second slot on a one-slot handheld

Try-another-slot advice applies only to a device that physically has two slots. On a single-slot system, concentrate on contact inspection, reinsertion, a restart and firmware checks.

When you are ready to play regularly

Keep cartridges in their cases, update firmware while you have access to the required Wi‑Fi band, and let the device finish saving before removing a collection. If you lend or move a cartridge, remember that its save data moves with it. For every new troubleshooting question, start with the model name: it determines which instructions are valid and which support team can act on the problem.

Extra checks that prevent repeat problems

Make a note of the model and current firmware version after the first successful update. That information makes later support conversations faster and helps you avoid applying an EXP instruction to an EXP-R or Super Pocket. If a cartridge works on one device but not another, compare the two firmware versions and model support pages before concluding that the cartridge is defective.

Keep the handheld, cable and cartridges together when traveling. The EXP-R’s published 4–5-hour estimate is not a guarantee: brightness, volume, game activity and battery condition affect runtime. Charge before a trip instead of relying on the estimate, and do not assume that every USB-C charger has the same documented output for every Evercade model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When sharing a cartridge, explain that saves remain on that cartridge. A friend who inserts it into another compatible, updated system may see the same save data. Conversely, starting or saving a game on a shared cartridge changes what the next player sees. Remove it only after saving has finished and the system is back at its menu.

Use the right support path

Have three details ready when you contact support: the exact handheld model, its firmware version and the cartridge title or collection. Describe whether the cartridge is missing entirely, appears but will not launch, or launches without the expected save. Those symptoms point to different checks. Blaze support is the appropriate channel for Blaze Evercade hardware; HyperMegaTech! support covers Super Pocket models.

If the device cannot connect to Wi‑Fi, report the network band and security type you tried. Current-device guidance describes secure 2.4 GHz support and excludes 5 GHz and open networks, so that detail can explain an apparently missing network. If you are using an EXP-R, mention that it is handheld-only when asking about an external display; an EXP guide’s TV-output instructions do not apply.

Final launch sequence

  1. Read the model name and open the matching manual or support page.
  2. Charge with the documented cable and charger guidance.
  3. Update firmware over a secured 2.4 GHz network when required by the device.
  4. Power off, inspect the cartridge, and insert it fully.
  5. Hold the EXP-family power button for about two seconds, or follow your model’s prompt.
  6. Use Left or Right to highlight a game, press A, choose Play, and use Last Save when offered.
  7. Save normally, return to the system interface, and only then remove the cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I insert an Evercade cartridge before or after turning the handheld on?

For the documented EXP-family procedure, insert the cartridge while the handheld is off, then hold the top power button for about two seconds. Starting with the cartridge installed lets the system detect the collection during boot. If your model displays different instructions, follow its on-screen prompt.

How do I start a game on an Evercade EXP?

Insert the cartridge, hold the power button for about two seconds, browse with Left or Right on the D-pad, and press A on the selected game. Highlight the Play icon and press A again. A Last Save option may appear for a previous session.

Can I use an EXP charger with an EXP-R?

Do not assume so without checking EXP-R documentation. The EXP FAQ gives 5V and 0.5–3A USB-charger guidance, while the EXP-R listing confirms USB-C charging and a cable in the box but does not state charger-output requirements.

Why can’t my Evercade see my Wi‑Fi network?

Current-device support guidance describes secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi and excludes 5 GHz and open networks. Select a secured 2.4 GHz network, enter its password exactly, and retry. Menu wording and network behavior can vary by model.

Where are Evercade save files stored?

Support guidance says saves are stored on the cartridge, so they can move between compatible, appropriately updated devices. Save before removing the cartridge. The EXP FAQ identifies firmware 2.0 or higher as necessary for save compatibility with the original Evercade Handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a cartridge is not recognised?

Power off, inspect the contacts for dust or residue, reinsert the cartridge evenly, and restart with it installed. Check firmware and test another known-compatible cartridge if possible. Contact the correct support team with your model, firmware version and cartridge title if the problem continues.

Can I connect an EXP-R to a television?

No. The EXP-R product information describes it as handheld-only with no TV or monitor output. TV-output instructions listed for the original EXP should not be applied to the EXP-R.

Do red, purple and blue cartridge cases work on the same systems?

The support reference identifies red as console, purple as arcade and blue as home-computer collections, and says all three colours work on current Evercade systems running current firmware. Always confirm model-specific compatibility if one is not recognised.

Does every Evercade handheld have a second cartridge slot?

No. Apply try-another-slot troubleshooting only to hardware that physically has two slots. On a single-cartridge handheld, inspect contacts, reinsert, restart with the cartridge installed and check firmware instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact model first, use its charging and support instructions, insert the cartridge before startup, and update firmware when needed. On the EXP-family flow, hold power for about two seconds, choose a game with Left or Right, press A, then select Play. Saves stay on the cartridge, while EXP-R owners should remember that this model has no TV output.
