The most reliable setup for a Java Minecraft server running Paper is EssentialsX as the economy provider, Vault as the shared economy API, and LuckPerms for permissions. Install the compatible plugin jars, set currency and balance limits in EssentialsX, connect supporting plugins through Vault, then test every money flow with a non-operator account before players join.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A working economy is more than a balance command. You must decide where money enters and leaves the server, who can create or remove currency, how shops price items, how transactions are logged, and how balances are backed up. The configuration below gives you a controlled starting point without assuming a particular server size or game mode.

What each plugin does
Keep the jobs of the three core plugins separate. This makes failures easier to diagnose and prevents several plugins from creating competing currencies.
| Component | Role | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| EssentialsX | Economy provider and player-facing commands | It does not automatically balance your prices or permissions. |
| Vault | Permissions, chat and economy API bridge | It is not a currency system by itself; another plugin must provide the economy. |
| LuckPerms | Permission groups and per-command access | It does not hold balances or replace EssentialsX. |
| Paper | Java server platform on which the plugins run | It does not include an economy by default. |
EssentialsX documents built-in balances, payments, command costs, selling and sign shops, with Vault support. Vault’s project documentation describes the API as a way for plugins to use one shared economy implementation instead of depending on a specific provider. LuckPerms recommends Paper for non-modded Java servers and recommends running it as the only permissions plugin unless you are migrating.

Before installing anything
Confirm the platform and version
This guide targets a Java server running Paper. Spigot and Purpur may work with the same plugins, but check each plugin’s current compatibility for your exact Minecraft version. Bedrock servers and modded loaders use different plugin systems and are outside this procedure.
Record the Minecraft version, Paper build, Java version and hosting control-panel procedure for stopping and starting the server. Download jars only from trusted project pages. Paper warns that plugins have unrestricted access to the server machine, so an apparently useful jar from an unknown mirror is a security risk.

Stop the server cleanly and copy the world folders, server configuration, the plugins directory and the host’s startup configuration to storage that is not the live server. Keep at least one backup from before the economy is enabled. A balance rollback is only possible if the relevant player data and economy files are included in that backup.
Plan the currency on paper
- Choose a name and symbol players can read quickly, such as dollars represented by
$. - Choose whether new players begin with no money or a small grant.
- List legitimate earning methods and the services or items that will consume currency.
- Decide which staff members may change balances and which actions require an audit trail.
Install EssentialsX, Vault and LuckPerms
- Stop the server using the host’s normal stop control. Do not replace jars while the server is writing files.
- Download Paper-compatible jars for EssentialsX, Vault and LuckPerms from their trusted project repositories. Match versions to the Minecraft release shown in your server console.
- Upload the jars to the server’s
plugins/directory. Do not unzip plugin jars or place them inside another subfolder. - Start the server and wait for it to finish loading. If your host supports a clean restart, use that after the first installation.
- Run
/pluginsin the console or as an administrator. The three plugins should appear enabled, normally with a green status indicator in server implementations that provide one. - Read the startup log before doing anything else. Resolve a missing dependency, duplicate plugin, Java error or version mismatch before creating balances.
EssentialsX will create its configuration files on first start. Make configuration changes with the server stopped when possible, then restart; a reload command is not a substitute for a full restart when you have changed plugin jars or core settings.
Configure the currency in EssentialsX
Open the generated EssentialsX economy configuration, normally under plugins/Essentials/config.yml. Keep a copy of the original file so you can identify your changes.
Starting balance and display
EssentialsX’s published configuration sets starting-balance: 0 by default. Leaving it at zero creates no currency when an account first appears; setting a positive value is an intentional grant and should be counted as money created by the server.
The documented default currency symbol is $. EssentialsX also provides an option to place the symbol after the amount. Pick one format and use it consistently in announcements, shop signs and chat messages. A readable symbol is more important than matching a real-world currency.

starting-balance: 0
currency-symbol: '$'
currency-symbol-suffix: false
The exact key spelling can vary with an EssentialsX release, so retain the comments in the generated file and edit the keys supplied by your installed version rather than pasting an older configuration wholesale.
Set safe money bounds
The example EssentialsX configuration documents max-money: 10000000000000 and min-money: -10000. These are configuration examples, not targets for every server. A very high maximum makes accidental or malicious commands harder to notice, while a negative minimum permits overdrafts that may be difficult to recover. Choose limits that fit your expected item prices and make abnormal balances obvious.
max-money: 10000000000000
min-money: -10000
If your design does not need debt, set the minimum to zero or another non-negative value supported by your installed release. Test the behavior with a disposable account before launch; the minimum controls whether a transaction can push a player below zero.
Use command costs sparingly
EssentialsX supports per-use command costs, with documented examples for actions such as repair and kits. Command fees are useful sinks when an action has a clear in-game value, but charging for routine commands can make the economy feel punitive. Add one cost at a time, announce it, and verify that the fee is removed only when the command succeeds.
Design money creation and money sinks
Inflation starts when the server creates currency faster than players can spend it. Deflation or frustration starts when earning is too difficult or sinks remove money without providing useful value. Write down every recurring source and sink before publishing prices.
| Mechanism | Currency effect | Controls to apply |
|---|---|---|
| Resource sales to an admin shop | Creates money | Limit the list, cap unusually profitable items and review output after observing play. |
| Jobs, quests or event rewards | Creates money | Set rewards by completion time and prevent AFK repetition. |
| Player-to-player payment | Moves money; does not create it | Keep payments enabled for trade, but log transfers and restrict administrative balance editing. |
| Buying building materials or consumables from the server | Destroys money | Price essential items predictably and avoid making basic survival impossible. |
| Travel, repairs, land claims or services | Destroys money | Charge for convenience, not for every ordinary movement or interaction. |
| Cosmetics and optional perks | Destroys money | Use them as voluntary sinks so players who do not want them are not blocked. |
Give players several understandable ways to earn, but do not price every item or offer unlimited high-value payouts. A small number of repeatable activities plus meaningful sinks is easier to monitor than dozens of loosely related rewards.
Use a price spread for server shops
When the server buys and sells the same item, set the buy price above the sell price. The difference is a sink when players purchase and prevents a risk-free loop in which a player can buy and immediately resell for profit. Treat every exception as a deliberate design choice and test it with a fresh account.

Separate player markets from admin markets
An admin shop provides a price anchor and guarantees that common goods can be traded. A player shop lets supply and demand set prices and creates social reasons to earn money. Start with a small, curated admin catalog; add player shops only after permissions, logging and rollback have been tested.
Set permissions with LuckPerms
Give ordinary players only the commands they need. Keep balance editing, economy reset, item spawning and administrative shop controls in a staff group. LuckPerms should be the single permissions authority on a non-modded Paper server unless you are deliberately migrating from another system.
Build groups before assigning commands
- Create a default group for new players, a trusted or moderator group for limited operational work, and an administrator group for economy management.
- Grant the default group balance viewing and player payment permissions, plus only the shop or sell permissions required by your design.
- Grant staff groups the ability to inspect transactions and manage shops. Do not grant balance-editing nodes to moderators unless they need them.
- Test inheritance with a non-operator account. Being an operator can bypass permission checks and hide a faulty group configuration.
EssentialsX permission node names can differ by feature and release. Use the permission list shipped with your installed version and grant the smallest set that enables the intended command. Typical player-facing capabilities include balance checks, payments, selling and approved shop use; administrative balance commands should remain staff-only.
Connect other plugins through Vault
Vault is the interoperability layer, not a replacement for EssentialsX. When a jobs, land, auction, rewards or shop plugin supports Vault, select its Vault economy option so it uses the same EssentialsX balances.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Install and enable EssentialsX, Vault and LuckPerms first.
- Install the additional plugin and read its dependency and economy-provider settings.
- Choose Vault or the Vault economy service instead of an internal, standalone currency.
- Restart the server and confirm that a payment made through one plugin changes the balance shown by EssentialsX.
- Repeat the test after a full restart to verify persistence.
If a plugin does not support Vault, do not assume its money is compatible. Keep it disabled until you have confirmed how it stores balances, whether it can duplicate currency and how its data can be backed up or reset.
Build shops without creating loopholes
EssentialsX sign shops
Begin with a small set of administrator-controlled signs. Document the sign format required by your EssentialsX release, the item name or material accepted, the quantity per transaction and the buy or sell price. Protect the area so players cannot break or edit the signs, and test both directions with a non-operator account.
Player-owned shops
A chest or graphical shop plugin can support player pricing, stock limits and purchase histories, but there is no universally best third-party shop plugin for every Minecraft and Paper version. Check the current compatibility matrix, dependencies, Vault support, logging and data format before installing one. Never add a shop plugin solely because its interface looks attractive.

Permission and stock checks
- Prevent ordinary players from creating an admin shop or changing its price.
- Decide whether an empty chest should disable a listing or allow an automatic refund.
- Limit bulk purchases if one item can be converted into unlimited money elsewhere.
- Record who created, edited and removed a listing.
Test the economy before opening the server
Create a test account that is not an operator and run this checklist after installation and after every major economy change:
- Check the initial balance and confirm it matches the configured starting balance.
- Run the balance command and verify the currency symbol and number formatting.
- Send a small payment with the player payment command; confirm both balances change by the expected amounts.
- Buy and sell one item through each shop type. Verify that the server’s buy price is not lower than its sell price where a spread is intended.
- Attempt a payment with insufficient funds and verify the documented failure behavior.
- Test the minimum balance by using a disposable account; confirm whether overdrafts are allowed.
- Use a sign or GUI as a regular player and confirm that protected administrative controls cannot be edited.
- Trigger any command cost and check that the fee is taken only after a successful command.
- Stop and restart the server, then verify that balances, shop stock and permissions persist.
- Inspect the console for errors and temporarily enable economy transaction logging while validating.
EssentialsX exposes economy-log settings. Broad Vault transaction logging can fill logs quickly, so enable the detail you need for diagnosis, rotate or archive logs, and return to a sustainable level after testing.
Prevent inflation, duplication and permission abuse
Control creation rates
Review the total money created by shops, jobs, quests and starting grants over a fixed period. You do not need an industry-wide inflation statistic to manage your server; compare your own creation and destruction totals, the prices players actually accept and the balances of representative accounts.
Remove accidental loops
For every sellable item, ask whether it can be generated automatically, duplicated by a plugin, obtained from an infinite farm or purchased more cheaply than it sells. Disable or reprice the loop before players discover it. Test unusual item metadata, renamed items and bulk transactions if your shop accepts them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect staff commands
Keep commands that give money, set balances, remove money or bypass shop prices in a tightly restricted group. Use a separate staff account for routine moderation and reserve the highest privileges for a small number of administrators. Record the reason for every manual balance adjustment.
Watch for anomalies
- Sudden large balances on new accounts.
- Repeated identical payments between the same accounts.
- Rapid buy-and-sell cycles that should lose money but do not.
- Transactions occurring while a player is offline when the plugin does not support them.
- Economy errors after a plugin update or server crash.
When an anomaly appears, stop the affected shop or reward source first, preserve logs and make a backup before editing balances. Do not delete economy files to hide a problem; that can destroy legitimate player data.
Backups, updates and rollback
Back up the world and plugin data together because a rollback that restores only one side can leave balances inconsistent with inventories or claimed land. Schedule automatic backups, retain several historical points and test restoring one to a private server. Before updating EssentialsX, Vault, LuckPerms or a shop plugin, read its version notes, back up the server and test on a copy.
Best Value
Keep a short change log containing the date, plugin versions, configuration changes, new shop prices and permission edits. If a release changes a configuration key, merge the new defaults into your edited file rather than replacing it blindly.
Troubleshooting common failures
Vault is installed but another plugin reports no economy
Check that EssentialsX’s economy component is enabled, all jars match the server version, and the console shows a registered economy provider. Restart rather than relying on a reload. If the other plugin has an economy-provider selector, choose Vault explicitly.
Players see different balances in different plugins
One plugin is probably using its own internal currency. Disable that mode and select Vault, or remove the plugin if it cannot share an economy safely. Do not attempt to reconcile two balance databases by hand while the server is live.
Players can use administrative economy commands
Check operator status, LuckPerms inheritance and wildcard permissions. Remove broad wildcard grants, test the command as a genuinely non-operator account and inspect which group supplied the permission.
Balances disappear after a restart
Stop the server cleanly, inspect the EssentialsX data directory for write errors and verify that the host is not restoring an old container snapshot on startup. Confirm that the account files are included in backups and that no synchronization job is overwriting them.
