The safest axolotl aquarium is a fully aquatic, species-only tank with cool, stable water, gentle circulation, a safe floor, very dim or no aquarium lighting, and at least one shaded retreat that the animal can enter easily. Set up and fully cycle the aquarium before the axolotl arrives. For one adult, Royal Veterinary Center recommends 75–110 litres (20–30 US gallons) with generous floor area. New South Wales Department of Education guidance lists a minimum footprint of 60 × 30 × 30 cm for a pair and a water depth of 20–25 cm. Those figures come from different authorities and are not a single universal legal standard, so treat them as source-specific minimum guidance rather than a complete stocking formula.
What an axolotl tank must provide
Axolotls spend their lives underwater and are sensitive to heat, strong currents and bright light. The order of priorities is important: stabilize temperature first, make the tank safe to walk on and hide in, then add only as much lighting as plants require. A brightly illuminated display with a powerful filter and decorative gravel solves the keeper’s visual goals but creates several avoidable welfare risks.

- Cool water: aim for 15–18°C. Water must never exceed 22°C according to New South Wales Department of Education guidance; Zoo Med gives 60–64°F as its recommended range and says never to exceed 72°F.
- Large usable floor area: floor space matters more than a tall, narrow aquarium. Use the 75–110 L veterinary recommendation for one adult as a planning range, and compare any alternative with the government footprint guidance.
- Gentle movement: use low-flow filtration and diffuse the return so the axolotl is not pushed around.
- Safe contact surfaces: choose a bare bottom or fine aquarium sand; do not use gravel or small stones.
- Dark retreats: provide smooth caves, broad plants, PVC sections or stable rocky overhangs with no sharp edges or trap points.
- Controlled illumination: ordinary room light is normally enough. If plants need a lamp, use the lowest practical intensity and keep shaded areas available at all times.

Size and shape
Royal Veterinary Center recommends 75–110 L (20–30 gallons) for one adult, emphasizing a large floor area. The New South Wales Department of Education gives a minimum 60 × 30 × 30 cm space for a pair and 20–25 cm of water depth. Because the authorities describe different situations, do not present either figure as a universal rule for every animal, age or enclosure. Use the larger, longer footprint you can safely support, especially when choosing between a tall tank and a long tank with the same volume.

Location
Place the aquarium on a level stand rated for the filled weight, away from direct sun and heat-producing equipment. Sun through a window can raise water temperature and intensify algae and glare even when the room feels comfortable. Keep the tank where you can read a thermometer, reach the filter and perform water changes without moving it.
A cooler room is preferable to trying to correct a hot location continuously. If the room cannot hold the target range, plan for a fan, aquarium chiller or another cooling method before buying the axolotl. Cooling equipment should be selected and installed so that it does not create a strong current or leave electrical connections exposed to splashes.
Equipment checklist before filling
- Aquarium with a broad, unobstructed floor and a secure, level stand.
- Low-flow filter whose outlet can be aimed at a wall or fitted with a diffuser.
- Reliable thermometer placed where it reflects the swimming area rather than a warm equipment pocket.
- Water conditioner suitable for the source water.
- Water-testing equipment for temperature, pH and the nitrogen-cycle readings your kit supports.
- Bare-bottom panel or fine aquarium sand; exclude gravel and small stones.
- At least one smooth, stable hide plus additional shaded cover where necessary.
- Plant light only if the plants require one, preferably a dimmable, low-output LED.
- Siphon or waste-removal tool and a container reserved for aquarium use.
Do not add the axolotl while the aquarium is still establishing its biological filter. A tank can look clear and still be unready, so complete the nitrogen cycle and verify the water over a full day-night cycle first.

Substrate: bare bottom or fine sand
Bare bottom
A bare base makes uneaten food and feces easy to see and remove. It is the simplest choice while you learn the tank’s flow and maintenance pattern. Some keepers dislike the appearance or find that an axolotl has less traction, but the safety advantage is that there is no loose material to swallow.

Fine aquarium sand
Fine, aquarium-labeled sand can provide a more natural-looking surface. Keep it thin and smooth, and remove waste before it is mixed deeply into the bed. The key distinction is particle size: veterinary guidance warns that axolotls can swallow gravel and small stones and suffer impaction. Never substitute decorative pebbles, coarse gravel, marbles or fragments that can fit in the animal’s mouth.
Inspecting any substrate
- Rinse new sand until the rinse water is substantially clearer, using a method that does not introduce soap or household chemicals.
- Run a hand over the finished surface to find clumps or sharp pieces.
- Watch feeding: if the axolotl repeatedly mouths the substrate, remove the material and switch to a safer floor.
Water quality and cycling
Condition the water
Fill with water treated by a conditioner appropriate for the source. Always match replacement water to the aquarium’s temperature; a sudden temperature difference is avoidable stress. Maintain pH between 6.5 and 8.0, the range listed by the New South Wales Department of Education and Royal Veterinary Center guidance.
Complete the nitrogen cycle before stocking
- Install the filter, thermometer and intended décor in the empty aquarium.
- Add conditioned water and start the filter. Keep the circulation gentle from the beginning.
- Use a test kit according to its instructions and record readings while the biological filter develops.
- Do not add the axolotl until the cycle is complete and the readings remain suitable through a full day-night observation.
- Recheck after adding décor or changing filter media, because those changes can alter circulation and biological capacity.
“Clear water” is not the same as cycled water. The cycle is an invisible biological process, so rely on repeated tests and stable readings rather than appearance. Keep a written log of temperature, pH, cleaning and water changes; it makes a gradual drift easier to spot.
Filtration and flow
Filtration should keep water clean without creating a torrent. Aim the return at the glass, use a spray bar or diffuser, or otherwise break up the jet. Signs that flow is too strong include an axolotl being pushed from its resting place, constantly struggling to remain still, or avoiding part of the tank. Correct the outlet before increasing pump power.

Remove solid waste routinely with a siphon or dedicated tool. Perform regular partial water changes using conditioned water at the same temperature as the aquarium. Preserve the filter’s biological function by following the filter manufacturer’s cleaning directions and avoiding practices that strip all established media at once.
Temperature: the first environmental priority
Target range and upper limit
New South Wales Department of Education guidance identifies 15–18°C as the optimum range and says water must never exceed 22°C. Zoo Med states 60–64°F as the recommended range and a 72°F maximum. These ranges overlap in practical terms: keep the water cool and stable rather than allowing repeated warm spikes.
| Reference | Recommended range | Maximum stated | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| New South Wales Department of Education | 15–18°C | Never above 22°C | Use as the current government-care target. |
| Zoo Med Laboratories | 60–64°F | Never above 72°F | Manufacturer guidance expressed in Fahrenheit. |
| Royal Veterinary Center | Cool water is required; the cited guidance does not state a separate numeric target | Not stated | Use alongside the numeric government and manufacturer ranges. |
Measure continuously enough to catch peaks
A thermometer is essential, not optional. Check it at different times, including after the room has warmed and after the aquarium light has been on. Test the water rather than relying on room temperature. If the reading approaches the upper limit, act before it crosses it.
Cooling options
- Cooler room: move the aquarium away from windows, radiators and appliances. This is usually the quietest solution.
- Fan: increase evaporation across the water surface while monitoring the water level and replacing evaporated water with conditioned water at the same temperature.
- Chiller: use when the room remains warm or seasonal heat is predictable. Install and service it so the return does not create excessive flow.
Do not rely on ice as a routine control method; a rapid local temperature change is less stable than managing the room or using equipment designed for aquarium cooling.

Lighting that does not stress an axolotl
When no aquarium lamp is best
Axolotls prefer dim conditions. New South Wales Department of Education guidance says normal indoor lighting without aquarium lights is sufficient. If the room already provides a normal day/night rhythm, you may not need a dedicated lamp at all.
If plants need a lamp
- Choose a dimmable LED rather than a high-output fixture intended for a bright reef or display tank.
- Start at the lowest useful intensity and shorten the illuminated area with a hood, raised fixture or floating cover if necessary.
- Keep a normal day/night cycle; do not leave the lamp running continuously.
- Arrange broad plants, a cave or another opaque structure so a shaded retreat is always reachable.
- Watch the axolotl, not just the plants. If it avoids the lit portion, increase shade or reduce intensity rather than forcing exposure.
Zoo Med’s axolotl-care guidance states: “Always provide hiding places for your axolotl to retreat from light if desired.” Shade is therefore a permanent design requirement, not an accessory to add after the animal shows discomfort.
Designing safe hiding places
Suitable materials
Use smooth aquarium-safe caves, sections of PVC pipe, broad-leaved plants or stable rocky overhangs. A hide should be large enough for the axolotl to enter and turn without scraping its body. Cover can be opaque or heavily shaded; the objective is a dark retreat, not a decorative tunnel that traps the animal.

- Run fingers over every edge and opening. Remove anything sharp, cracked or abrasive.
- Press each ornament gently after placement. It should not tip, roll or collapse when the axolotl pushes against it.
- Reject tunnels with openings that can catch a limb or allow the animal to wedge itself.
- Keep rocks supported on the tank floor rather than balanced on loose sand.
- Check new plants and décor for fasteners, metal, paint or residues that are not aquarium-safe.
How much cover is enough?
No cited source publishes a universal number of hides per axolotl. Instead, arrange enough shaded retreats that the animal can leave an illuminated area and settle without being exposed in the open. In a long aquarium, place cover at more than one end so the axolotl does not have to cross the entire tank to escape light or flow. Leave clear routes between hides, feeding space and the filter’s gentle circulation.

Step-by-step setup
- Select the position. Choose a cool location away from direct sun, level the stand and confirm that you can reach the filter and siphon.
- Install the empty tank. Check seams, support and lid fit before adding water.
- Add the safe floor. Leave it bare or add rinsed fine aquarium sand. Exclude gravel and small stones.
- Place décor and hides. Add smooth caves, PVC, plants or overhangs. Test stability and remove sharp or trapping features.
- Install low-flow filtration and a thermometer. Aim the return at glass or a diffuser so the water moves gently.
- Fill with conditioned water. Set the intended water depth and verify pH is within 6.5–8.0.
- Start the cycle. Run the filter and test according to the kit instructions until the nitrogen cycle is complete. Do not stock during this stage.
- Check temperature across a full day and night. Confirm that the aquarium stays near 15–18°C and never approaches the stated 22°C/72°F ceiling.
- Set lighting. Omit the lamp if room light is adequate. Otherwise install a dimmable, low-output LED on a normal day/night schedule.
- Confirm shade and flow. Verify that the axolotl will have a dark retreat and that no area has a strong current.
- Stock only after verification. Acclimate the axolotl carefully to the established water, then observe breathing, posture, movement and use of the hides.
Maintenance routine
Every observation
- Read the thermometer and look for a warm trend, especially during hot weather or after lighting has operated.
- Remove visible feces and uneaten food promptly.
- Check that the filter is running and the outlet has not shifted into a high-flow jet.
- Make sure hides remain stable and accessible.
During partial water changes
- Prepare conditioned replacement water at the aquarium’s temperature.
- Remove only a partial volume, preserving a stable environment rather than performing abrupt, oversized changes.
- Use the opportunity to siphon waste from the bare floor or sand surface.
- Recheck temperature and pH after refilling.
Periodic checks
Inspect tubing, suction cups, diffuser parts and décor for wear. Re-test the water after moving an ornament, changing the filter arrangement or adding plants. Replace or repair anything that develops a rough edge, crack or unstable base.
Common setup failures and fixes
The tank keeps warming
First move it out of sun and heat sources and verify the thermometer with a second reading. Improve room cooling, add a fan or use a chiller if the room itself cannot stay cool. Do not compensate with bright lighting changes alone; the water temperature is the controlling issue.
The axolotl avoids the open tank
Check light intensity and current before adding more decoration. Dim or remove the lamp, provide a dark hide and redirect the filter return. Avoid interpreting hiding as a reason to illuminate the animal more strongly.
Water movement is too forceful
Diffuse the outlet, aim it at glass, reduce the pump setting if available, or choose a lower-flow filter. The goal is circulation without visibly pushing the axolotl or preventing it from resting.
Waste disappears into the substrate
Vacuum more frequently and inspect the particle size. If the material is gravel or small stone, remove it because ingestion and impaction are known hazards. A bare bottom or fine sand makes routine removal safer.
The aquarium looks ready but the cycle is incomplete
Do not add the animal simply because the water is clear or odorless. Continue running the filter, follow the test kit’s cycling procedure and wait for stable readings before stocking.
Comparing practical setup choices
| Setup choice | Temperature stability | Usable floor area | Flow control | Substrate safety | Hide coverage | Lighting control | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long tank, bare bottom, low-flow filter | Depends on room and equipment; broad surface can be monitored easily | Usually maximizes open walking space for a given volume | Simple to diffuse at one end | Highest protection from swallowed particles | Add caves or plants deliberately | Easy to leave unlit or dim | Waste is easy to see and remove |
| Long tank with fine sand and plants | Depends on room and equipment | Good if planting does not crowd the floor | Keep returns away from loose sand | Safer than gravel when the sand is genuinely fine; still monitor ingestion | Plants can create broad shade | Requires the lowest useful plant-light intensity | Surface siphoning must avoid deep sand disturbance |
| Tall tank with dense décor | Not stated by the cited sources; tall volume does not replace floor area | May provide less walking room than a long tank of similar volume | More décor can create hidden high-flow pockets | Depends on the chosen floor; gravel remains unsafe | Potentially strong cover, but inspect every opening | More shaded zones may be needed | More difficult to reach waste behind ornaments |
The sources do not publish a required hide count or a numerical flow rate, so choose by animal access and behavior rather than an invented specification. In every design, cool stable water, gentle circulation, a safe substrate and reliable shade remain the deciding criteria.
