How to Set Up an Audio-Technica Turntable and Balance Its Tonearm

For a manual Audio-Technica turntable such as the AT-LP120XUSB, setup has a strict order: level the deck, balance the tonearm so it floats, zero the tracking-force ring, then set the cartridge’s specified tracking force and adjust anti-skate. The frequently quoted 2.0 g value belongs to the cartridge supplied with the AT-LP120XUSB (and to specific other models), not to every Audio-Technica turntable or cartridge. Use the manual for your exact model and the specification sheet for the installed cartridge.

What you are actually adjusting

A tonearm has to apply the correct downward force to the stylus while allowing the cartridge to follow the record groove. Audio-Technica’s AT-LP120XUSB manual puts the reason plainly: “In order for the cartridge to pick up sound correctly from the record’s grooves, the tonearm’s balance and tracking force must be adjusted to fit the specifications of the cartridge.”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Two related adjustments are often confused:

  • Balance is the preliminary neutral point. You move the counterweight until the arm floats horizontally, with neither the stylus nor the rear of the arm pressing down.
  • Tracking force is the measured downward force used during playback. After balancing, you zero the gauge ring and turn the counterweight and ring together to the cartridge maker’s recommended value.

Balancing does not set the final tracking force by itself. If you skip the zeroing step, the number on the ring may not represent the force actually reaching the stylus.

Before you begin: identify the model and cartridge

Read the model number on the turntable and identify the cartridge fitted to the headshell. Audio-Technica uses different drive systems, tonearms, cartridges and controls across its range. The AT-LP120XUSB and AT-LP120XBT-USB are manual models with adjustable counterweights and anti-skate controls. An automatic model such as the AT-LP3XBT may operate the arm differently. The AT-LP7X is another manual belt-drive design with its own supplied cartridge specification.

Model or example What the official material establishes What you must verify before adjustment
AT-LP120XUSB Manual setup sequence; supplied cartridge has a 2.0 g standard tracking force; anti-skate is set to the same value as tracking force. Confirm that the original supplied cartridge is still installed. A replacement cartridge can require a different range and value.
AT-LP120XBT-USB Its manual repeats the balancing and tracking-force sequence and gives 2.0 g as the standard for its supplied cartridge. It also directs the user to level the turntable. Use the BT-USB manual if your model is this version; do not assume every control or cartridge matches another model.
AT-LP3XBT Audio-Technica lists an AT-VM95C cartridge on its automatic Bluetooth turntable. Follow the automatic model’s instructions and the AT-VM95C specification. Do not apply the LP120XUSB procedure or value automatically.
AT-LP7X Audio-Technica lists an AT-VM95E BK cartridge, a 1.8–2.2 g tracking-force range and 2.0 g as its standard value. Use the LP7X manual and the installed cartridge documentation, especially if the cartridge has been changed.

A model number that looks similar can still have a different cartridge or arm. If the cartridge has been replaced, its documentation takes priority over a number printed for the original cartridge.

Tools and safe working conditions

  • Place the turntable on its intended support, away from vibration, and keep enough space to work around the headshell and counterweight.
  • Use a small spirit level if needed. The AT-LP120XUSB manual says a level, sold separately, may be used to ensure the turntable is level.
  • Keep the stylus protector on until you are ready for the balancing operation. Remove it only when the manual directs you to do so.
  • Have the correct model manual and the cartridge maker’s tracking-force range available. A stylus-force gauge can be a useful independent check, but it does not replace the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Turn the platter off while adjusting. Never allow the stylus to scrape across a record or the bare platter.

Work slowly. A stylus is a very small, delicate contact point; a sudden arm movement can bend the cantilever, damage a record or scratch the platter.

The following sequence is for the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB and follows its user manual. The AT-LP120XBT-USB manual describes the same core process, but always use the manual supplied with your own unit.

1. Put the turntable in its final position and level it

Set the turntable where it will be used, rather than balancing it on a temporary surface and moving it afterward. Position the deck so the platter is stable and the tonearm can be released without hitting a wall, dust cover or nearby equipment.

  1. Place the level on a flat part of the turntable chassis or platter as appropriate for the manual’s instructions.
  2. Check the level in more than one direction. If the surface is not level, correct the support or use the turntable’s leveling provisions if your model provides them.
  3. Recheck after the turntable is fully assembled. A deck that tilts can change the arm’s effective force and can make a careful setup inaccurate.

2. Prepare the tonearm without exposing the stylus prematurely

Leave the stylus protector fitted while you arrange the controls. Support the headshell gently with one hand so the arm cannot swing unexpectedly. Release the tonearm clamp only when you are ready to work with the arm. Follow the AT-LP120XUSB manual’s direction to remove the protector for the balancing step; keep your fingers away from the cantilever and stylus tip.

3. Set the arm’s floating balance

  1. With the headshell supported, release the tonearm from its rest.
  2. Turn the counterweight on the rear of the arm until the arm can be released and remains approximately horizontal.
  3. Make very small turns and keep a hand close to the headshell so it cannot fall.
  4. Do not let the stylus touch the record, platter or any other surface. If the arm begins to drop, support it immediately and continue only after you have regained control.
  5. When the arm floats level, return it to the arm rest and secure the tonearm clamp.

This floating position is the neutral reference, not a 2.0 g setting or any other playback force. The counterweight position will be used as the reference for the gauge ring in the next step.

4. Zero the tracking-force gauge ring

  1. Keep the counterweight from rotating. Hold it firmly enough to prevent movement, without forcing the arm or twisting the tonearm.
  2. Turn only the numbered tracking-force gauge ring until its zero mark lines up with the tonearm centerline.
  3. Do not turn the entire counterweight during this operation. The AT-LP120XUSB manual specifically warns that rotating the ring alone does not apply tracking force; it only establishes the zero reference after the arm has been balanced.

5. Apply the cartridge’s recommended tracking force

Now turn the counterweight and gauge ring together until the specified value reaches the tonearm centerline. Use the cartridge maker’s stated range and preferred value, not a generic Audio-Technica number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the cartridge supplied with the AT-LP120XUSB, the manual states a 2.0 g standard tracking force. That figure is model- and cartridge-specific. It is also the standard listed for the supplied cartridge in the AT-LP120XBT-USB manual, while the AT-LP7X page gives its supplied AT-VM95E BK a 1.8–2.2 g range with 2.0 g standard. These examples do not establish 2.0 g as the correct setting for an unspecified cartridge.

If your cartridge specification gives a range rather than one number, start at the manufacturer’s recommended standard or midpoint unless the manual gives another instruction. Do not choose a value outside the stated range to compensate for skipping, noise or a damaged record.

6. Set anti-skate on the AT-LP120XUSB

After setting tracking force, turn the AT-LP120XUSB anti-skate dial to the same numerical value as the tracking force, as its manual instructs. For the supplied cartridge at the stated 2.0 g setting, that means setting the dial to 2.0.

This is the manufacturer’s instruction for the cited model. Anti-skate controls and recommended methods vary; an automatic turntable, a different tonearm or a different cartridge may require a different procedure. Do not assume that matching the numbers is universal simply because it is correct for the LP120XUSB manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Secure the arm and check the result

  1. Return the arm to its rest and engage the tonearm clamp before moving the turntable.
  2. Confirm that the counterweight has not shifted while you set the ring or anti-skate.
  3. Check that the stylus protector can be refitted without touching the stylus.
  4. Place a record only after the arm is under control and the platter, mat and record are clean.

During the first record, listen at a moderate level. A correctly adjusted arm should track the groove without the stylus visibly skating across the surface. If you hear distortion concentrated in one channel, see repeated skipping, or see the cantilever sitting at an abnormal angle, stop playback and recheck the model instructions and cartridge specification rather than increasing force at random.

How automatic Audio-Technica models change the process

Automatic operation does not mean the cartridge can use any tracking force. It means the mechanism moves the arm for you. The AT-LP3XBT, for example, is listed with an AT-VM95C cartridge, so its required value comes from that cartridge and the turntable’s own adjustment instructions.

Do not force an automatic arm through a manual sequence intended for the LP120XUSB. Some automatic designs use a preset or a different counterweight arrangement, and their transport locks and arm-lift controls may be essential. Identify the exact model, read its setup section, and verify whether the installed cartridge is original. If a replacement cartridge or headshell has been fitted, confirm that the automatic mechanism is compatible before attempting adjustment.

What can go wrong, and how to recover

The arm will not float

  • Confirm that the stylus protector has been removed only for the balancing step and that nothing is catching the arm.
  • Make sure the cartridge, headshell and counterweight are fully installed as the manual shows.
  • Check that the tonearm clamp is released and the arm is not still locked to its rest.
  • Turn the counterweight in small increments while supporting the headshell. Never push down on the arm to force a floating position.

The gauge reads zero but the stylus force is obviously wrong

  • Return to the floating-balance step. The gauge ring must be zeroed only after the arm is balanced.
  • Hold the counterweight still while turning the ring. Turning the ring by itself does not create tracking force.
  • Check that the cartridge or headshell has not been changed since the last setup.
  • If the value remains uncertain, compare it with the cartridge specification and verify it with a suitable stylus-force gauge.

The record skips after setup

  • Stop the record and inspect the stylus and record for dirt or damage.
  • Recheck that the tracking force is within the cartridge’s specified range and that the anti-skate setting follows the exact model manual.
  • Confirm that the turntable is level and stable.
  • Do not solve skipping by turning the counterweight repeatedly without rebalancing; that can leave the displayed number unrelated to the actual force.

There is channel imbalance or harsh distortion

  • Verify that the headshell is seated and locked correctly.
  • Check the cartridge alignment and stylus condition according to the cartridge documentation.
  • Rebalance the arm and reset the tracking force from zero rather than making an unmeasured adjustment.
  • Try another clean record to separate a setup problem from a damaged or poorly pressed disc.

The stylus touched the platter or record during adjustment

Stop immediately and inspect the stylus and cantilever under good light. A bent cantilever or damaged stylus should not be used, because it can damage records. If the stylus made only a brief, controlled contact while protected, refit the protector and restart the procedure carefully; when in doubt, have the stylus inspected.

When a cartridge or headshell has been replaced

A replacement changes the mass at the front of the arm and, more importantly, can change the correct tracking-force range. Keep the cartridge’s installation instructions with the turntable. Before playing a record:

  1. Confirm that the replacement cartridge is mechanically compatible with the headshell or arm.
  2. Read its recommended tracking-force range and standard value.
  3. Install it securely, then repeat the complete balance, zero and tracking-force sequence.
  4. Set anti-skate only as your turntable manual and the cartridge setup guidance allow.
  5. Check stylus alignment and overhang using the model’s instructions; balancing alone does not align a cartridge.

The AT-LP7X page identifies a VM95-series replacement-stylus family for its supplied cartridge, but a replacement stylus is not needed merely to balance the arm. Compatibility information is model-specific, so do not transfer accessory assumptions from the LP7X to another turntable.

Care after setup

  • Use the tonearm lift or return the arm to its rest before stopping playback; never drag the stylus sideways across a record.
  • Keep the stylus protected when the turntable is not in use.
  • Clean records and the stylus with products and methods approved for those parts. Dirt can sound like a tracking-force problem.
  • Recheck level and tracking force after transporting the turntable, changing the cartridge or headshell, or noticing a new tracking fault.
  • Keep the counterweight and anti-skate controls at their verified settings; write the cartridge model and chosen force in the manual for future reference.

A concise setup checklist

  • Exact model identified: AT-LP120XUSB, AT-LP120XBT-USB, AT-LP3XBT, AT-LP7X or another model.
  • Installed cartridge identified and its tracking-force specification located.
  • Turntable placed in its final position and leveled.
  • Stylus protected until the balancing step; headshell supported.
  • Tonearm clamp released; counterweight adjusted until the arm floats horizontally.
  • Arm returned to its rest and clamp secured while the gauge ring is zeroed.
  • Counterweight and gauge ring turned together to the cartridge’s specified force.
  • Anti-skate set according to the exact model manual; on the AT-LP120XUSB, match it to tracking force.
  • Arm secured before moving the turntable or starting playback.

Bottom line

For the AT-LP120XUSB, balance first, zero the gauge ring second, set the supplied cartridge’s specified 2.0 g tracking force third, and match anti-skate to that force as the manual directs. The safe, accurate method for every other Audio-Technica model begins by checking its own manual and the cartridge specification; neither the floating balance nor the 2.0 g example should be treated as a universal setting.
