To set up an Apple Watch SE 3, you need an iPhone 11 or later (including iPhone SE, 2nd generation or later) running iOS 26 or later. Update the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, connect it to Wi-Fi or a cellular network, unlock it, and keep it beside the watch. Then use the Apple Watch app and the iPhone camera to pair the devices. If camera pairing fails, Apple provides a manual pairing option.
Check compatibility before you begin
Apple’s setup requirement is specific: Apple Watch SE 3 works with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Apple’s specifications also list the iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) as compatible when it has iOS 26 or later. An older iPhone cannot complete the supported setup even if it has Bluetooth.

| Requirement | What to have ready | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone model | iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) | The SE 3 setup flow requires one of these compatible iPhones. |
| iPhone software | iOS 26 or later | The watch may refuse to proceed until the phone meets the required software level. |
| Network | Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection on the iPhone | Activation, account checks, and synchronization need a network connection. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth enabled on the iPhone | The phone uses Bluetooth for the nearby pairing process. |
| Position | Unlocked iPhone close to the watch | Keeping both devices together prevents the pairing and synchronization process from timing out. |
Update the iPhone first
Open the iPhone’s software-update screen and install the latest available iOS update before opening the Watch app. Apple recommends doing this before setup. A watchOS update can also be required during setup, so leave enough time for the watch to download and install it rather than treating an update request as a pairing failure.
Prepare the physical devices
- Put the watch on your wrist or keep it close enough to operate while the iPhone remains nearby.
- Make sure the iPhone is unlocked when you start.
- Turn on Bluetooth and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- If the watch shows no sign of life, connect it to power before trying to turn it on.
The SE 3 package includes a band and a 1-meter Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable. A spare cable or replacement band can be useful later, but neither is required to pair the watch.

Pair Apple Watch SE 3 with your iPhone
The following sequence is the standard setup path for a watch you are pairing with your own iPhone.
- Turn on the watch. Put it on your wrist, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. If the logo does not appear, charge the watch and try the side button again.
- Bring the devices together. Unlock the compatible iPhone and hold it next to the watch. Wait for the message “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch,” then tap Continue.
- Open the Watch app if no message appears. Launch the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, tap All Watches, and choose Add Watch. This starts the same pairing flow without relying on the automatic prompt.
- Choose who will use the watch. Select Set Up for Myself for your own watch. Select Set Up for a Family Member only when you are using Apple’s family setup flow for someone else.
- Use camera pairing. When the animated pairing screen appears on the watch, center the watch face inside the rectangle shown in the iPhone camera viewfinder. Keep the watch still until the iPhone confirms that it has been paired.
- Switch to manual pairing if necessary. If the camera cannot read the animation, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the identification prompts on both devices. Manual pairing is Apple’s fallback; it does not require you to repeat an unsuccessful camera scan indefinitely.
- Select the data path. Choose Set Up as New Apple Watch if this is your first watch or you do not want to bring forward an earlier configuration. If the iPhone detects a previous watch backup, review the Express Setup choices and select a restore option when it is offered.
- Complete the personal settings. Follow the prompts for wrist preference, passcode, text size, personal and health details, notifications, and Apple Pay. You can omit a passcode for basic setup, but a passcode is required for features such as Apple Pay.
- Leave both devices together. Keep the iPhone and watch close until synchronization finishes and the watch face appears. Some content can continue synchronizing in the background after the face is visible, so do not separate the devices immediately if the Watch app still shows setup activity.
What the camera screen is doing
The moving pattern on the watch is an identification animation. Framing it inside the iPhone’s viewfinder lets the phone associate that particular watch with the pairing session. The camera does not need to remain open after confirmation. If the viewfinder repeatedly fails to recognize the animation, use the manual option rather than changing unrelated settings.
When to choose a passcode
A passcode is not mandatory for the basic pairing sequence. It becomes necessary for Apple Pay and other features that require the watch to verify that it is being worn by its owner. Decide during setup whether the convenience of those features outweighs entering a passcode on the watch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose between a new setup and a restored watch
The choice after pairing determines whether the SE 3 starts with default settings or inherits data from an earlier Apple Watch configuration. Use the option that matches the data you actually want on this watch.

| Option | Choose it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Set Up as New Apple Watch | This is your first Apple Watch, or you want a clean configuration. | You work through the setup prompts without restoring the previous watch’s settings and apps. |
| Express Setup | You have used an Apple Watch with this iPhone and want to review the existing setup choices quickly. | The iPhone presents settings based on the previous configuration, which you can accept or customize. |
| Restore a watch backup | You want earlier settings and supported watch data back on the SE 3. | The iPhone restores the backup when one is available, followed by synchronization that can continue after the watch face appears. |
A clean setup is not a mistake when no usable backup exists. Conversely, selecting “new” when a recent backup is available means you will need to configure the watch again instead of recovering the previous arrangement. Read the choices on screen before confirming.
Move the SE 3 to a new iPhone
Moving an existing watch is different from pairing a brand-new one because the old iPhone may contain the watch backup and the Health and Activity data you want to preserve.
Prepare the old iPhone and watch
- Update the old iPhone and the watch before starting the transfer.
- Back up the old iPhone.
- Check that Health data is synchronizing to iCloud. If you use a computer backup instead, Apple says the backup should be encrypted so Health and Activity data are preserved.
- Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi. Charge the watch and the new iPhone to at least 50 percent before beginning the handoff.
Complete the transfer when the old iPhone is available
- Restore the recent iPhone backup onto the new iPhone.
- Keep the watch unlocked and on your wrist while the new phone is nearby.
- Respond to the pairing prompt that appears on the new iPhone. If it does not appear, open the Watch app and use its pairing controls to continue.
- Choose the offered watch backup when prompted, then leave the devices close until the transfer and synchronization complete.
Restoring the iPhone backup first gives the new phone access to the watch information it needs. Interrupting the process or moving the devices apart can leave synchronization unfinished even when the watch has already displayed its face.
If the old iPhone is unavailable
When the original phone cannot be used, erase the watch and sign in to iCloud on the new iPhone. Pair the erased watch with that phone and restore a watch backup if one is offered. If no backup exists, select Set Up as New Apple Watch. Erasing is irreversible for data that was never backed up, so do not use this route casually when the old phone or a cellular plan might still be needed.

Fix common Apple Watch SE 3 pairing problems
No setup prompt appears
Open the Apple Watch app yourself and go to All Watches > Add Watch. The iPhone must be unlocked for the prompt and app flow to work. If the app still cannot begin pairing, return to the preparation checklist and verify the required connection and Bluetooth conditions before trying again.
The camera cannot pair the watch
Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually on the pairing screen and complete the prompts. Manual pairing is the supported alternative when the camera cannot focus on or recognize the watch animation.
The watch will not turn on
Place the watch on its charger, wait for it to receive power, and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. A watch that has not powered on cannot be discovered by the iPhone, so charging comes before troubleshooting the app.

An Activation Lock screen appears
Activation Lock means the watch is still associated with an Apple Account. Enter the credentials for that account, or ask the previous owner to remove the watch from the account. Erasing the watch without the paired iPhone does not remove Activation Lock, so a reset alone cannot make a second-hand watch ready for a new owner.
The watch says it is already paired or requests a passcode
The watch may still be linked to another iPhone. Follow Apple’s erase or unpair procedure before attempting a new setup. Do not erase it automatically if you need data or a cellular plan from the existing pairing; confirm that the previous configuration has been backed up or properly transferred first.
Pairing hangs or the watch remains on the Apple logo
Restart the watch and try the pairing flow again. Apple also provides a reset route for a watch that is stuck on the Apple logo. Use that route only after considering whether the watch contains data or service settings that have not been backed up, because a reset can remove the current configuration.

Cellular activation is optional. You can complete basic pairing without adding a mobile plan. During setup, a cellular model may offer the option to add service; you can also add it later from the Apple Watch app.
Carrier support and regional availability determine whether cellular service can be activated. If you do not need the watch to use a mobile network away from the iPhone, skip cellular activation and finish the normal pairing process. If you do want that capability, check the carrier and region requirements shown in the Watch app before committing to a plan.
After the watch face appears
Seeing the watch face means the main pairing sequence has completed, not necessarily that every item has finished downloading. Keep the iPhone nearby while background synchronization continues. Review notifications, wrist selection, text size, health details, and Apple Pay settings in the Watch app after the initial sync so the watch behaves as you expect.
Quick Recap
- If you selected a new setup, configure only the notifications and apps you actually want instead of copying every previous setting manually.
- If you restored a backup, check the restored settings and make any changes after synchronization has settled.
- If you skipped cellular service, remember that pairing still works normally over the iPhone connection; cellular can be added later when supported by your carrier and region.
- Keep the included magnetic fast-charging cable available. A spare cable or another band is optional equipment, not a prerequisite for using the SE 3.
Quick decision guide
