How to Set Up an Android Tracker and Check Whether Other Devices Can Find It

Use a Google Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth tracker, pair it with your Android phone through Fast Pair, and confirm it appears in the Find Hub app. Your own phone can then use the Find Hub network to help locate the tag when nearby Android devices detect it. That owner-location function is separate from Android’s unknown-tracker protection, which lets another Android phone scan for supported trackers that are nearby and separated from their owners.

A scan on someone else’s phone is not a universal test of Bluetooth visibility. It only covers supported tracker types and reports a limited safety condition. A negative scan does not prove that every tracker is undetectable, and a positive scan does not by itself prove that the tag is following the person who scanned.

What the two Android features actually do

Find Hub helps you locate your own tag

After a compatible tag is paired, Find Hub associates it with your Google Account. You can view the tag in the Find Hub app and use the service to see its reported location. If the tag is offline, nearby Android devices can detect its Bluetooth signal and securely send an approximate location to the Find Hub network. Google describes this location information as end-to-end encrypted.

Unknown-tracker alerts protect people from unwanted tracking

Android’s unknown-tracker feature is designed for a different situation: a supported tracker is moving with, or remains near, a person while separated from its owner. The other phone can run a manual scan or eventually issue an automatic alert. The feature is not a general Bluetooth scanner and does not test whether every phone in the area can see your tag.

Check your phone before pairing a tracker

Complete these checks on the Android phone that will own the tag:

  • Sign in to a Google Account.
  • Turn on Location.
  • Use a tracker model that explicitly supports Google Find Hub. Bluetooth compatibility alone is not enough.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is available and the phone is running a supported Android release for the functions you intend to use.
  • Use a screen lock if you want your phone to participate in the Find Hub network. Google says a PIN, pattern, or password is required for network help locating offline items.

Google notes that menu names and paths can vary by Android version. If a label differs slightly, use Settings search for “Find Hub” or “unknown tracker alerts.”

Set up the tracker in Find Hub

  1. Enable the phone’s location service. Open Settings, choose Location, and switch it on. Location is needed for normal Find Hub operation and for automatic unknown-tracker alerts.
  2. Allow the phone to be located. Go to Settings > Security > Find Hub and turn on Allow device to be located. This setting controls whether the phone can be found through Google’s device-finding service.
  3. Choose offline-device network participation. Open Settings > Google > All Services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices. Google currently presents four choices: Off, Without network, With network in busy places only, and With network everywhere. Select the level that matches your privacy and recovery needs. The network options allow nearby Android devices to contribute detections; “Without network” keeps the phone’s own finding capability without that broader participation.
  4. Open Find Hub. Install or launch the Find Hub app and sign in with the same Google Account. If the app asks for permissions or offers to enable finding features, review and accept the settings you want.
  5. Put the tag into pairing mode. Follow the tag manufacturer’s instructions, usually by removing the battery tab or holding its pairing button. Keep it close to the unlocked Android phone.
  6. Complete Fast Pair. When the Fast Pair prompt appears, tap it and follow the on-screen steps. Google says a compatible Bluetooth tracker is automatically added to Find Hub after pairing finishes; accept an additional confirmation prompt if one appears.
  7. Verify the item in the app. Open Find Hub, select the tag, and check that its name and status are present. Rename it to something unambiguous, such as “House keys,” so you can select the correct item later.

When precision finding is available

Some tags and phones support Ultra-Wideband (UWB) precision finding. Both the tag and the phone must have UWB hardware, and UWB must be enabled. Availability and performance vary by model. Google’s current support information lists compatible devices in selected Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola Edge, and Razr families; a model in one of those families is not automatically supported, so check the exact phone and tag specifications. If either device lacks UWB, Find Hub can still provide ordinary map and Bluetooth-based finding where supported.

How the Find Hub network can locate an offline tag

When your tag is out of Bluetooth range, another participating Android device may detect its Bluetooth broadcast. That device sends an encrypted location report to the Find Hub service, where it can become available to the Google Account that owns the tag. The nearby phone does not need to be paired with your tag, and the person carrying it does not receive your tag’s location details.

Participation depends on the offline-finding choice on each Android device. “With network in busy places only” limits assistance to places where many devices are present, while “With network everywhere” allows broader participation. “Off” disables network assistance, and “Without network” does not use the crowdsourced network. These choices affect the chance of a lost item receiving a report; they do not turn another person’s phone into a universal scanner for your tag.

Check whether another Android phone can detect a tracker

Run a manual unknown-tracker scan

On the Android phone you want to test, open Settings > Safety & Emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now. The manual scan takes about 10 seconds according to Google. Keep the phone and tag close together during the scan, then wait for the result.

This feature is available on Android 6 and later. Current compatibility includes Find Hub network-compatible tags, supported headphones, and Apple AirTags. A tag that uses a proprietary Bluetooth system or is not enrolled in the supported Find Hub ecosystem may not appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret a positive result correctly

A result means the phone detected a supported tracker nearby that was separated from its owner at the time of the scan. It can be a legitimately misplaced tag, a tag temporarily away from its owner, or a device that has been moving with the scanner. The result alone does not establish stalking or prove that the tracker is following the scanner.

If the result identifies an unknown tracker, open it to view the detected travel map. Google says this map does not show where the owner checked the tracker’s location. For compatible Find Hub trackers, use Play sound or Find nearby to help locate the hardware.

Interpret a clean result correctly

No match means that the scan did not identify a supported separated tracker during those ten seconds. It does not prove that a tag is out of Bluetooth range, unsupported, powered off, shielded, or invisible to every Android phone. Bluetooth signals and scan timing can change, and the tracker may not yet meet the separation conditions used by the safety system.

Manual scans and automatic alerts are not the same

A manual scan is an immediate, user-requested check. Automatic alerts are generated by Android when its safety system has enough information to determine that a supported tracker may be traveling with the phone over time. Google says alerts can take time because the system evaluates multiple factors and movement rather than treating one brief Bluetooth sighting as proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic unknown-tracker alerts require Location to be on. On Android 11 and later, a manual scan can still work with Location off. On Android 10 and earlier, manual scanning uses Location and Bluetooth, so both must be enabled.

Even if your item is lost, your information remains protected and cannot be accessed without your permission — not by Apple, Google, the manufacturer, or any third party

Google says a person receives at most one alert per tracker per day. Tracker identifiers also change regularly, so the same physical tracker can appear as a new tracker after its identifier rotates. These behaviors can make repeated tests look inconsistent.

For supported Find Hub trackers, Google documents a temporary pause of location updates for up to 24 hours as an available product instruction. Treat that as a short-term pause, not as permanent deactivation; follow the manufacturer’s procedure if you need to disable the hardware.

A practical, responsible way to test your own tag

There is no universal owner-run test that forces every Android phone to classify your tag as an unknown tracker. You can still perform a controlled check without involving an unsuspecting person:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a second Android phone whose owner has agreed to the test and update it to a version that supports unknown-tracker alerts.
  2. Confirm that your tag is a supported Find Hub-compatible model and that it is paired to your own Google Account.
  3. Take the tag away from the owning phone while keeping both phones and the tag in a safe, controlled location.
  4. On the second phone, run Settings > Safety & Emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now.
  5. Record whether the scan reports the tag, then repeat only as needed while changing one condition at a time, such as distance or whether the owner phone is nearby.

Do not interpret a failed test as proof that the tag cannot be detected in other circumstances. The scan is constrained by supported hardware, Bluetooth conditions, owner separation, and Android’s safety logic.

Troubleshooting setup and detection problems

The Fast Pair prompt never appears

  • Confirm Bluetooth and Location are enabled and keep the tag close to the phone.
  • Check that the tag is actually in pairing mode and that its battery tab has been removed or its battery is charged.
  • If it was previously paired to another account, reset it only according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A reset may remove existing ownership information.
  • Restart Bluetooth or the phone, then try the pairing process again.

The tag paired but is missing from Find Hub

  • Open Find Hub while signed in to the Google Account used during Fast Pair.
  • Verify the tag model supports Find Hub rather than only a vendor-specific app.
  • Recheck Settings > Security > Find Hub > Allow device to be located and the offline-device setting under Settings > Google > All Services > Find Hub.
  • Allow time for the pairing handoff to finish, then reopen the app. Google says compatible tags are added automatically after pairing completes.

The second phone’s manual scan finds nothing

  • Confirm the tag type is supported by unknown-tracker alerts. Not every Bluetooth tracker qualifies.
  • Ensure the tag is powered and within Bluetooth range during the approximately ten-second scan.
  • On Android 10 or earlier, turn on both Location and Bluetooth. On Android 11 or later, Location is not required for a manual scan, but enabling it can make testing conditions closer to normal automatic-alert operation.
  • Separate the tag from its owner phone and allow enough time for the safety system to recognize that separation. A tag that is merely misplaced may produce a different result from one moving with a person.

An automatic alert has not appeared

Automatic alerts are not immediate confirmations. The system considers movement and other factors, and Google limits alerts to one per tracker per day. A manual scan is the appropriate way to perform an immediate check, but its result remains limited to the instant and conditions of that scan.

Precision finding does not work

Check UWB support on both the exact phone model and the tag, ensure UWB is enabled, and move into a location where the devices have a clear short-range connection. If either device lacks UWB or the model is not supported, use the standard Find Hub map, sound, or proximity functions instead.

Privacy, safety, and what to do after an alert

What Android stores during detection

Google says unknown-tracker alert processing uses location information, detection timestamps, and the tracker’s device ID. That information is temporarily stored in encrypted form on the phone and is not shared with Google or other users. Tracker IDs change regularly, which helps prevent a single static identifier from being used indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Responding to a tracker you do not recognize

  1. Open the alert and review the detected travel map and tracker details.
  2. Use Play sound to locate the device. If it is a compatible Find Hub tracker, use Find nearby for proximity guidance.
  3. If you feel unsafe, move to a safe public place and contact law enforcement or someone you trust.
  4. Do not assume that turning off Bluetooth, Location, or Airplane Mode disables the tracker. Follow the tracker’s manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Preserve the alert, map, and tracker information if an investigation may be necessary. Disabling some devices can reset them and erase information that could be useful.

Use tracking only with permission

Google’s Find Hub acceptable-use policy states: “You may not use Google Find Hub to: Track people or track property that does not belong to you.” Do not place a tag on another person or their property without consent, use it to identify someone’s presence secretly, or modify the tracker to remove safety features. Keep your own setup limited to belongings you own or are authorized to manage.

Which method should you use?

Your goal Use this Important requirement
Find your keys, bag, bike, or another belonging Pair the tag and use Find Hub The tag must support Find Hub; network recovery depends on offline-finding participation and nearby Android devices
See whether a nearby phone can identify a separated supported tracker Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now Android 6 or later and a supported tag, headphone, or AirTag
Receive a warning about a tracker moving with you Automatic unknown-tracker alerts Location must be on; alerts can require movement over time
Locate a tag at close range with directional guidance Find Hub’s Find nearby or UWB precision finding Find nearby requires a compatible tracker; UWB requires compatible hardware on both ends

Set up the tag through Fast Pair first, verify it in Find Hub, and choose offline-finding participation deliberately. To check detection by another Android device, use the unknown-tracker scan on a consenting test phone and treat the result as a narrow safety signal—not as a universal verdict about Bluetooth visibility.
