On a compatible Fire HD 8, open Settings > Alexa and enable both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode. That activates wake-word access without holding the Home button. Before following those steps, identify whether your device is a Fire HD 8 and which generation it is. Amazon also has a separate product called Alexa Tablet, and its setup path should not be silently treated as identical to a Fire HD 8.
Identify the tablet before changing Alexa settings
“Amazon Alexa Tablet 8” can refer to two different things in practical support searches: an 8-inch Fire HD 8 tablet, or Amazon’s separately documented Alexa Tablet product. Alexa features, Show Mode support and menu labels are not guaranteed to match between them.

Check the model and generation
Open the tablet’s Settings and look for the device model, generation or model-information entry. You can also check the model and generation printed in the device information supplied with the tablet. Continue with the Fire HD 8 instructions only when the device is identified as a Fire HD 8. The generation matters because Amazon sets different software requirements for Show Mode and excludes one generation entirely.
Do not identify the tablet by screen size alone. Several Amazon tablets have an 8-inch display, but an 8-inch screen does not prove that the tablet is a Fire HD 8 or that it supports the same Alexa controls. If the model name is missing, compare the exact wording shown in Settings with Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help index before changing settings.

What this guide covers
- Fire HD 8: the hands-free menu is Settings > Alexa, with an optional Show Mode interface.
- Separate Alexa Tablet: use the product’s own first-use setup and current Alexa instructions rather than assuming the Fire HD 8 menus exist.
Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help index is the appropriate starting point if the model label is unclear. A listing title, case, or retailer description may use informal wording, so rely on the tablet’s own model information whenever possible.
Turn on hands-free Alexa on a Fire HD 8
Alexa features on a Fire tablet require the tablet’s main profile. Secondary profiles, including child profiles, cannot use the Alexa features described here. Switch to the main profile before troubleshooting a missing Alexa setting. If the tablet is shared, make the profile change before judging whether Alexa is supported.
1. Enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode
- Sign in to the tablet’s main profile.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Alexa.
- Enable Alexa.
- Enable Hands-Free Mode.
Amazon describes the required combination as enabling both settings under Settings > Alexa. Turning on only Alexa does not provide the same wake-word behavior as turning on both switches. With both enabled, say “Alexa” followed by a request. You should not need to press and hold Home.

Keep the tablet connected to Wi-Fi while completing setup. The tablet needs an Amazon account for Alexa services, and a reliable network makes the first test easier. If the Alexa entry is unavailable, return to the model check and confirm that you are not in a child or other secondary profile.
2. Test the microphone and response
Place the tablet where its microphones are not covered, then say the wake word and a simple request. A blue light bar appears when the tablet is recording and sending the request. Use a short test such as asking for the time so you can separate wake-word detection from a more complicated request.
If the light does not appear, confirm that Hands-Free Mode is still enabled, that the tablet is connected to Wi-Fi and that you are using the main profile. Remove a case or stand temporarily if it sits over a microphone opening. If the light appears but Alexa gives an unexpected answer, the wake word was detected; investigate the request or network response rather than repeatedly toggling the setting.
3. Use Show Mode only if you want the visual interface
Hands-free Alexa and Show Mode are separate controls. Hands-free mode lets you speak to Alexa; Show Mode adds a full-screen, glanceable Alexa-style display. You can use hands-free voice control without ever enabling Show Mode.

Amazon’s official procedure is documented in Switch to Show Mode on Your Fire Tablet.
Show Mode compatibility by Fire HD 8 generation
Do not promise Show Mode based only on the tablet’s screen size. Amazon lists both a minimum software version for several older generations and an explicit incompatibility for the 12th-generation Fire HD 8.

| Fire HD 8 generation | Amazon’s Show Mode requirement |
|---|---|
| 7th Generation | Software version 5.6.1.0 or later |
| 8th Generation | Software version 6.3.0.1 or later |
| 10th Generation | Software version 7.3.1.4 or later |
| 12th Generation | Not compatible with Show Mode |
These are Amazon’s listed compatibility floors for Show Mode, not a general promise that every Alexa feature behaves identically across generations. Check the software information shown in Settings and compare it with the row for your exact generation. If Show Mode does not appear in Quick Actions, first confirm the generation and software version before repeatedly changing Alexa settings.
A 12th-generation Fire HD 8 can still be a valid tablet for other supported Alexa functions, but Amazon explicitly excludes it from Show Mode. Do not purchase a dock or promise a full-screen interface for that model merely because it is an 8-inch Fire tablet.

How to turn hands-free Alexa off
To stop the tablet from responding to the wake word, open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and disable the setting. This is useful in bedrooms, shared rooms or any place where an accidental wake-up would be inconvenient.
Amazon also documents two faster controls:
- Use the Hands-Free Quick Action after swiping down from the top of the screen.
- Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds.
When hands-free mode is off, pressing and holding the Home button remains an alternative way to invoke Alexa outside Show Mode. In Show Mode, the Alexa microphone and camera control is available from Quick Actions, so you can manage listening access without leaving the visual interface.
If your device is the separate Alexa Tablet product
Amazon maintains a dedicated page titled How to Set Up Your Alexa Tablet. The available support information treats that product separately from Fire HD 8, so do not assume that Settings > Alexa or Fire HD 8 Show Mode rules apply unchanged.
First-use requirements
Have an Amazon account and your Wi-Fi details ready before turning it on. The initial setup sequence asks you to:
- Power on the tablet.
- Choose a language.
- Continue through the on-screen setup prompts using your Amazon account and Wi-Fi connection.
The same setup guidance describes adding a Google account when you want Google Play and Google apps. That account is separate from the Amazon account used for Alexa services. Adding Google services is optional to Alexa setup; do not confuse a Google sign-in prompt with the Amazon account needed for Alexa.
Why the distinction matters
The available support information does not establish that the phrase “Amazon Alexa Tablet 8” in a listing or search result always means the separately named Alexa Tablet, nor that it is equivalent to a Fire HD 8. Identify the product first, then follow the current instructions for that exact model. If the Alexa Tablet’s menus differ, use its dedicated Alexa and voice-assistant help rather than forcing Fire HD 8 paths.
What happens when the tablet hears “Alexa”
Amazon says Fire tablet Alexa uses on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. After the device detects it, the request is streamed to Amazon’s cloud. Amazon also says that the stream includes a fraction of a second of audio immediately before the wake word. That description comes from Amazon’s own support material; it should not be paraphrased as a claim that no audio is ever sent before the wake word.

Some tablets may not detect the wake word while the screen is off when they are not connected to power. If wake-word responses are unreliable in that situation, test the tablet while it is charging and with the screen awake before concluding that the setting is broken. This behavior can vary by tablet, so a successful test while plugged in does not prove that an unplugged, screen-off test will work the same way.
A blue light bar indicates that the tablet is recording and sending a request. The light is an operating indicator, not a guarantee that Alexa understood every word or completed the requested action. If you do not want the tablet listening for the wake word, disable Hands-Free Mode rather than relying only on the light indicator.
Review or delete recordings
Amazon provides voice-history controls for Alexa requests. You can review or delete recordings through the available Alexa privacy controls, or use either of these spoken commands:
- “Delete what I just said.”
- “Delete everything I said today.”
These commands address stored voice history; they do not change whether Hands-Free Mode is enabled. For Amazon’s explanation of wake-word behavior, recording indicators and Fire tablet Alexa requirements, see Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs and Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The Alexa setting is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the main profile; child and other secondary profiles cannot use Fire tablet Alexa features.
- Verify that the device is actually a Fire HD 8 rather than the separately documented Alexa Tablet product.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and restart the tablet, then check Settings again.
- Compare the model and generation in Settings with Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help listings instead of relying on a retailer’s name.
The tablet does not respond to the wake word
- Return to Settings > Alexa and confirm both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode are enabled.
- Make sure the microphones are not covered by a case, stand or your hand.
- Test while the screen is on or the tablet is connected to power, because Amazon notes that some tablets may not detect the wake word with the screen off when unplugged.
- Watch for the blue light bar. If it appears, the tablet is recording and sending the request even if the response is not what you expected.
- Try a short, ordinary request before testing a smart-home command or another service that may have its own account requirements.
Show Mode is absent or will not start
- Identify the generation and compare its software with Amazon’s listed requirements.
- Remember that 12th-generation Fire HD 8 is not compatible with Show Mode.
- On a supported model, use Quick Actions to toggle Show Mode or say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.”
- If the tablet is on an older supported generation, verify that its software meets the listed floor rather than assuming an update is unnecessary.
Alexa works, but the dock does not switch modes
Check the dock conditions in the next section. The dock can charge a compatible tablet without switching it into Show Mode when Alexa has not been activated or when the model is outside the supported generations. Automatic switching also depends on the Automatic Mode Switching setting.

The Fire HD 8 Show Mode Charging Dock is an optional stand-and-charge accessory for specified older Fire HD 8 tablets. It is not required to activate hands-free Alexa or to switch Show Mode on manually. The setup itself therefore does not require an accessory purchase.
| Tablet | Dock guidance documented by Amazon |
|---|---|
| Fire HD 8, 7th Generation | Compatible |
| Fire HD 8, 8th Generation | Compatible with software version 6.3.0.1 or later |
| Fire HD 8, 12th Generation | Not suitable for Show Mode because the tablet is not Show Mode compatible |
Enable the conditions for automatic switching
- Alexa must be activated on the tablet.
- Automatic Mode Switching must be enabled if you want the tablet to enter Show Mode when docked.
- The tablet must be one of the supported models listed by Amazon.
Amazon states that the dock charges the tablet but does not enter Show Mode when Alexa is not activated. Verify the current listing and availability before buying, because compatibility and stock can change. For the manufacturer’s setup conditions, see Use the Show Mode Charging Dock.
Dock or manual Show Mode?
| Your priority | Better fit |
|---|---|
| You only want hands-free Alexa | Enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode; no dock is needed |
| You want the visual interface occasionally | Use Quick Actions or the voice command to switch Show Mode manually |
| You want charging, a stand and automatic Show Mode on supported older models | Consider the compatible Show Mode Charging Dock and enable Automatic Mode Switching |
Final setup checklist
- The device model has been identified instead of assuming every 8-inch Amazon tablet uses Fire HD 8 instructions.
- The tablet is using the main profile.
- Settings > Alexa > Alexa is enabled.
- Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode is enabled.
- A simple wake-word request produces the expected response and, while processing, the blue light bar.
- Show Mode is treated as optional and checked against the generation and software requirements.
- Any charging dock is matched to a supported older model, with Alexa and Automatic Mode Switching enabled when automatic entry into Show Mode is wanted.
- Privacy expectations are clear: Amazon describes on-device wake-word detection, cloud streaming after detection and a brief preceding audio fraction.
For a Fire HD 8 that passes those checks, hands-free Alexa is a settings change rather than a separate purchase. The generation check is the safeguard that prevents an unsupported Show Mode promise, especially for the 12th-generation Fire HD 8.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I activate Alexa hands-free on my Fire tablet?
Use the main profile, open Settings > Alexa, and enable both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode. Then say “Alexa” followed by a request.

Why is the Alexa option missing on my Fire tablet?
Alexa features require the main profile; child and other secondary profiles cannot use them. Also confirm that the device is a supported Fire tablet rather than the separately documented Alexa Tablet product.
Does every Fire HD 8 support Show Mode?
No. Amazon lists software requirements for 7th-, 8th- and 10th-generation Fire HD 8 tablets and explicitly says the 12th-generation Fire HD 8 is not compatible with Show Mode.
Can I use hands-free Alexa without Show Mode?
Yes. Hands-Free Mode and Show Mode are separate controls. Enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode under Settings > Alexa; Show Mode is optional.
What does the blue light bar mean?
Amazon says the blue light bar appears when the tablet is recording and sending an Alexa request. It indicates processing activity, not that Alexa necessarily understood or completed the request.

Will Alexa hear me when the screen is off?
Some tablets may not detect the wake word with the screen off when they are not connected to power. Test with the screen awake or the tablet charging if wake-word detection seems unreliable.
Do I need a Show Mode Charging Dock?
No. The dock is optional. It can provide charging, a stand and automatic Show Mode on specified older Fire HD 8 models when Alexa and Automatic Mode Switching are enabled.
How can I delete an Alexa recording?
Use Alexa’s voice-history controls, or say “Delete what I just said” or “Delete everything I said today.”
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact tablet first. On a supported Fire HD 8, use the main profile and enable both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode under Settings > Alexa. Treat Show Mode and the charging dock as optional, generation-specific features—especially because the 12th-generation Fire HD 8 does not support Show Mode.
