You can keep a stored video streaming to YouTube Live from a Debian VPS by pacing it in real time with FFmpeg, sending it to the current RTMPS endpoint from YouTube Live Control Room, and supervising FFmpeg with a service manager such as systemd. A VPS and a restart policy do not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: test the feed, monitor FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health, and be ready to resolve faults.
What this setup does—and what “always on” requires
This guide covers sending a video file already on your Debian VPS to YouTube Live. It is not a camera-capture setup or a generated live feed. FFmpeg reads the file at its normal playback rate, encodes or passes through compatible media, and sends the result to YouTube. For a continuous file loop, the example below repeats one file; playlists and transitions require a separate input workflow.
“Always on” is an operational goal, not a property guaranteed by a command. A managed service can start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a process exit, but it cannot by itself detect every stalled source, unhealthy ingest connection, ended broadcast, or YouTube-side problem. You need checks for both the process and the broadcast.
1. Choose a Debian VPS for the stream
Before renting or configuring a server, compare the plan’s sustained outbound capacity with your video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. Also check its monthly transfer allowance, CPU capacity if FFmpeg will encode in software, network route and region, reboot controls, support, and uptime terms. Those details vary by provider and plan; verify the actual offer rather than assuming a VPS label implies sufficient capacity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Bandwidth: leave headroom above the selected stream bitrate for audio, transport overhead, and network variation.
- Transfer: estimate continuous traffic before committing. At a steady 5 Mbps video payload, traffic is about 2.25 GB per hour before audio and protocol overhead. If it runs 24 hours a day for 30 days, that is roughly 1.62 TB before overhead. These are arithmetic estimates based on those assumptions, not provider measurements.
- CPU: software encoding needs processing capacity; the load depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and source. If the VPS is only remuxing compatible media, requirements differ.
- Storage: allow space for the media and logs, and monitor available disk space.
Do not select a plan solely by advertised port speed. You need sustained egress and enough included transfer for the stream’s actual bitrate and schedule.
2. Install FFmpeg and inspect the build
On Debian, install FFmpeg from the package repositories configured for your release. Package versions and enabled encoders vary, so inspect the installed build instead of assuming a particular version or codec is available.
-
Update package metadata and install:
sudo apt update sudo apt install ffmpeg -
Check the version and configuration:
ffmpeg -version -
Confirm that the encoder you plan to use is available. For the H.264 example below, check for
libx264:ffmpeg -encoders | grep libx264 -
Inspect the input’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio properties:

If the expected encoder is absent, use a suitable FFmpeg build for your Debian release or choose an available compatible codec. If you plan to copy rather than encode media, verify that its codecs, parameters, and container are accepted by YouTube and work with the selected output format.
3. Choose output settings that match YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround, the advanced settings list 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Use settings compatible with your encoder, input, and chosen stream profile—not a combination selected from separate rows without checking their fit.
The following YouTube-recommended video bitrates are for the specified codec, resolution, and frame rate. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a VPS can sustain the required egress.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p30 | 5 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| H.265 or AV1 | 720p30 or 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
| H.265 or AV1 | 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 or AV1 | 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
For a first test, 720p30 H.264 with AAC stereo is a conservative example, not a universal requirement. YouTube also specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR. Do not treat those SDR settings as HDR settings: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered if the encoder lacks the necessary RTMP capabilities. See YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the profile you intend to use.

4. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast and get its RTMPS details
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Obtain the endpoint and key from your own channel’s Live Control Room; do not rely on an old sample URL because the current account-facing configuration is the authority.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one.
- Open the Stream tab or the stream’s settings. In Stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL if necessary.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and the stream key into a protected configuration. Verify the URL begins with
rtmps, not ordinaryrtmp, if you intend to use encrypted transport. - Follow the exact URL and key instructions shown for your account. Some configurations use a complete stream URL or require the key to be appended; do not assume one URL shape fits every setup.
See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and SSL troubleshooting guidance. If an SSL error persists, YouTube advises checking that both protocol and server are correct and suggests specifying port 443.
Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a password. Do not paste a real key into a public example, repository, shell history, or world-readable service definition. Store it in a configuration file or credential mechanism readable only by the service account. If it is exposed, rotate it through YouTube’s controls.
5. Test a file-based FFmpeg stream
FFmpeg’s -re option reads an input at its native frame rate. Put it before the file input so a stored file is sent at playback speed rather than as quickly as the server can read it. The pattern below loops a single file indefinitely and encodes an illustrative 720p30 H.264/AAC profile.

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build, media file, or YouTube account. Set the URL and key placeholders through protected configuration, and confirm whether your account expects the key appended to the RTMPS URL before using that final URL shape. Do a short test before deploying unattended.
-stream_loop -1repeats this one input file. It does not create a playlist or transitions; use an input arrangement designed for those requirements.-g 60and-keyint_min 60mean 60 frames. At 30 fps, that is a two-second interval. Choose the GOP/keyframe interval from your actual frame rate to target YouTube’s recommended two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset an illustrative bitrate-control profile. Select values for the intended codec and output profile, and ensure the host can sustain the resulting traffic.- If the source is not compatible with the output settings or needs scaling, conversion, or different audio handling, adjust the filter and codec options deliberately. Do not assume this example preserves every input correctly.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP URL syntax and RTMPS as its secure SSL variant. It also notes that TCP keepalive can be enabled; keepalive is not application-level reconnection, a process watchdog, or a delivery guarantee. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Run FFmpeg under systemd and retain logs
For unattended operation, configure a system service to launch after boot, run as a dedicated unprivileged user, and restart when the process exits. Keep credentials out of the unit file itself; use a root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions or an appropriate credential mechanism. The following is a deployment pattern, not a universal unit: validate it on your Debian release, adapt paths and account names, and check systemd’s behavior before relying on it.
- Create a dedicated user and ensure it can read only the required media and protected configuration.
- Place the FFmpeg command in a script or unit configuration that references secret variables from a protected file. Limit that file’s ownership and permissions to root and the service account.
- Configure the service to start after boot, run as the dedicated user, and send output to the journal or another retained log destination.
- Enable and start the service, then inspect its status and recent logs before treating it as deployed.
A restart policy such as systemd’s Restart=always can relaunch a process after it exits; it cannot necessarily detect that FFmpeg is alive but the file stopped advancing or YouTube ingest is unhealthy. Validate the exact unit on the Debian release you target. For Debian’s packaged FFmpeg protocol options, see the Debian trixie FFmpeg protocol manpage.

7. Test the complete path, then monitor it
Before continuous operation, run a representative test with the intended motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate. Inspect the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before starting a live stream.
During operation, check the following rather than relying on a process status alone:
- System service state, recent restarts, and FFmpeg stderr or journal output.
- Whether the input is advancing or has reached EOF, and whether the output bitrate is consistent with the intended profile.
- CPU, memory, outbound traffic, and free disk space for media and retained logs.
- YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, plus whether the broadcast is scheduled, live, or ended as intended.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API treats the incoming video feed separately from the broadcast and allows a stream feed to be associated with broadcasts. That distinction matters operationally: an active FFmpeg process does not prove that the intended broadcast is live. The API documents health issues such as unsupported audio or video codecs, bitrate too low, frame-rate mismatch, mismatched keyframe frequency, and insufficient incoming video that can lead to viewer buffering. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication or connection failure | Wrong endpoint scheme, server, URL shape, or key; key may have been rotated. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the rtmps scheme, and confirm whether the key must be appended. For SSL errors, recheck protocol and server; YouTube suggests port 443 if the issue persists. |
| Unsupported codec or stream-health warning | Input or output codec/profile is not accepted, or audio/video settings do not match the selected stream. | Inspect the file with ffprobe, encode to a supported profile, and compare the stream settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| Bitrate, frame-rate, or keyframe warning | Output values do not match the chosen codec/resolution/frame-rate profile or recommended keyframe interval. | Check the active FFmpeg options and health message. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds for the chosen frame rate and do not exceed four seconds. |
| Viewers report buffering or the preview stalls | Insufficient incoming video, egress variation, a stalled input, or an unhealthy ingest path. | Check YouTube stream health, FFmpeg output, source advancement, and sustained VPS egress. Leave network headroom; restarting the process is not a diagnosis by itself. |
| Service repeatedly restarts | FFmpeg exits due to invalid options, unreadable files, missing encoders, or a connection failure. | Read the recent journal/stderr output, verify paths and service-user permissions, and run a short foreground test with the same protected configuration. |
| Service is active but stream is not healthy | The process remains alive while source progression, ingest, or broadcast state has failed. | Check file advancement, output traffic, YouTube preview and health messages, and broadcast lifecycle independently of systemd status. |
