How to Set Up an Always-On YouTube Stream of Speedrun World Records

You can keep a YouTube broadcast available around the clock by sending a continuously playing, rights-cleared playlist of speedrun videos through an encoder to a YouTube live event. The hard parts are separate: keeping the encoder feed connected, and making sure every run is still a verified record for its specific game and category—and that you have permission to rebroadcast it.

How to set up a 24/7 YouTube livestream

The basic chain is: verified YouTube channel → scheduled or active live event → encoder feed → playlist of permitted videos. YouTube treats the broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources, so an event can remain present even after its video feed stops. Plan to monitor and restore the feed; an open event alone does not prove the stream is healthy.

1. Check that the channel can go live

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Live streaming also has an age requirement. Check YouTube Help for the current age and account requirements before scheduling, since platform rules can change.

2. Create the live event in YouTube Studio

In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event and connect it to an encoder. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation distinguishes the broadcast event from the stream resource and supports scheduling, linking, and changing event states. When setting up the event, make sure the encoder is connected to the intended broadcast rather than an unrelated or previous event.

  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

3. Build a feed from permitted run videos

Assemble the rotation from files you are authorized to use, then send the playback output through encoder software. OBS is one possible streaming tool; the available guidance does not establish a required computer configuration or minimum CPU, GPU, memory, or storage. Choose equipment based on the video format and encoding load you actually need, and test it rather than assuming a particular PC class is required.

For a pre-recorded channel, the source is a playlist rather than a live console capture. A capture card is relevant only if you are also bringing in a separate live console source. Keep an archive of original material when you have permission to retain it: Speedrun.com recommends local recording because connections can drop and hosted videos can be muted, lost, or broken. That recommendation is about preserving evidence; it does not authorize copying another runner’s video.

4. Match encoder output to YouTube’s guidance and your connection

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion. Its encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not over four seconds. The following H.264 figures are YouTube-recommended bitrates, not guarantees that your computer or internet connection can sustain them.

  • 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors

Output example YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps

Set the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source footage and the upload capacity you can sustain. A higher target is not useful if the encoder or connection cannot maintain it. Test representative movement and audio before the public event, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while it is live.

5. Make a recovery plan

Decide who or what will notice an interruption and how the feed will be restored or switched. YouTube’s API documentation notes that a 24/7 broadcast can continue while the incoming video stream has stopped. Treat the feed—not just the broadcast page—as the thing that needs monitoring. A local setup depends on the encoder computer, its source playback, and the connection remaining available; test your recovery steps before relying on the stream.

How to stream speedrun world records all day

Do not label a playlist simply “world records” without defining what counts. Speedrun.com describes its leaderboards as community-owned and moderator-curated. A record is specific to a game and category, and may depend on platform, version, timing method, and that board’s current rules. Check the actual board and its rules before adding or describing a run.

Keep a record ledger for every video

Maintain an entry for each item in the rotation with enough information to recheck its status and its permission. A practical ledger includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Game and exact leaderboard category.
  • Runner’s name, or the anonymous label the runner has requested.
  • Recorded time and platform or version where applicable.
  • Leaderboard link, verification state, and the date you checked it.
  • Source video and the permission basis for including it.

Recheck entries before continuing to describe them as current records. A leaderboard may change, and the rules are not uniform across games. Speedrun.com says video or photo evidence is commonly required, but some boards differ; the selected game’s rules and moderators govern. The platform’s leaderboard configuration can set video and verification requirements, so do not assume a universal default.

Use a rotation that remains accurate

Keep the playlist tied to the ledger: if a run loses its status, its category changes, or permission is withdrawn, remove it or update its presentation. If you use a title card or overlay, identify the game and category rather than implying one undifferentiated record applies across the game. Preserve enough source information to correct the listing when a board changes.

Can I rebroadcast speedrun videos on YouTube?

Not merely because a run is publicly viewable or appears on a leaderboard. Speedrun.com’s moderation rules forbid copying or reuploading a player’s video without permission. A player may also ask not to have a run or username listed; in appropriate cases, a top time can be represented anonymously without a linked video.

Get explicit permission and keep a record

Ask the runner for permission covering the actual use, and retain a written record of the grant. Clarify whether it allows rebroadcast, edits, attribution, monetization, and how long the video may remain in the rotation; also agree how removal requests will be handled. If a runner requests anonymity, do not expose identifying information in the stream or its metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear rights beyond the runner’s video

A leaderboard entry or API record does not itself grant rights to the video, gameplay footage, music, or Speedrun.com service material. Speedrun.com’s current Terms of Use restrict unauthorized copying, archiving, scraping, and commercial use of its service and content; the terms describe the user grant as personal and non-commercial unless otherwise agreed in writing. Confirm the current terms and obtain appropriate authorization before commercial reuse or automated collection.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, warn the operator, interrupt it temporarily, or terminate it. A match can interrupt even licensed material if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Rights clearance may therefore need to cover the game and music as well as the runner’s video, and allowlisting may be necessary for licensed third-party material. The rights position can vary by game, publisher, territory, and soundtrack; there is no blanket assurance that gameplay rebroadcast is permitted.

Common problems and fixes

  • The event page is live but has no video: the broadcast can persist after its incoming stream stops. Check the encoder connection and source playback, then restore or switch the feed.
  • YouTube reports stream-health problems: check the encoder’s selected protocol and output against YouTube’s current settings guidance, confirm the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, and test again at a lower output if necessary.
  • The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: investigate a third-party content match. Confirm permissions for the runner’s video, game content, and music; for licensed material, check whether channel allowlisting is needed.
  • A listed run is no longer the current record: recheck the game’s specific category rules and leaderboard verification, then update or remove the run and its description.
  • A video is muted, missing, or broken: use a permitted local copy if one is available, or replace the item with another run for which you have permission. Keep local archives only where you have the right to retain the material.
  • A runner asks for removal or anonymity: follow the permission terms you recorded, remove or anonymize the run as appropriate, and check that titles, overlays, and metadata do not continue to identify the runner.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, the setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. You still need rights to every run you upload and must keep your record descriptions current. Learn more at StreamNeo or start your free day.
