How to Set Up an All of Fabric 7 Server in Minecraft (1.20.1)

To run an All of Fabric 7 (AOF7) server, install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime, unpack the dedicated AOF7 server archive into its own folder, start it once to generate files, accept the EULA, and then connect with a client using the identical AOF7 release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Fabric profile. AOF7 is a large pack, so performance depends on the world, view distance, and player activity rather than on a single universal RAM number.

What All of Fabric 7 requires

AOF7 is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its project listing describes it as a Fabric 1.20 modpack with 400 mods, more than 1,000 quests, challenges, and shader support. Every player and the server must agree on three things: Minecraft 1.20.1, the Fabric loader, and the same AOF7 release with compatible mod files.

CurseForge lists release 2.5.3 as the latest AOF7 release, dated July 14, 2025. A separate server-pack entry identifies All of Fabric 7-Server-2.4.1.zip. Those are different pack releases. Do not download a 2.4.1 server archive and pair it with a 2.5.3 client unless the project explicitly says the files are compatible. Record the pack version before downloading and use that version for everyone.

Prepare the server before installing

Choose where the server will run

A home server gives you direct access to the files, Java process, backups, and network settings. A managed host supplies a control panel and handles much of the installation and maintenance, but you work within its plan limits and supported versions. Either option must support Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric, and the exact AOF7 release you selected.

Install the correct Java runtime

Fabric recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4. Because AOF7 targets 1.20.1, install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Java 21 is the recommendation for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later, not for this pack. After installation, open a terminal or command prompt and run:

java -version

Confirm that the reported major version is 17 and that the command resolves to the installation you intend to use. If it reports another version or is not found, fix your PATH or call the Java executable by its full path in the start script.

Create a clean server directory

Make a new folder dedicated to this AOF7 release. Keeping the server pack, world, configuration, logs, and scripts together makes backups and rollback safer. Do not extract the archive over an unrelated AOF7 installation or copy random files from a client instance.

Install the AOF7 server pack

1. Lock the versions

  1. Write down Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric, and the AOF7 release number you will use.
  2. Have each player select that same release in the launcher before joining.
  3. Download the server archive that corresponds to that release. If the project offers several server archives, do not assume the newest client listing and newest server archive are interchangeable.

2. Download and extract the dedicated archive

Use the AOF7 project’s server-pack entry on CurseForge. For the release identified by the archive page, the file is named All of Fabric 7-Server-2.4.1.zip. Save it, check that the download completed, and extract all of its contents into the empty server directory. A dedicated server pack normally contains the Fabric launcher or a script, configuration folders, and the mod set expected by that release.

The dedicated archive is preferable to reconstructing a server from a client installation. A client folder can contain client-only settings or files and may omit server launch metadata. Mixing archives from different releases is a common cause of missing-mod and registry errors.

3. Use the supplied start script

Inspect the extracted files for the pack’s start script. Use that script first because it carries the launch arguments selected by the pack author. If you must launch the Fabric executable yourself, Fabric documents this pattern:

java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> nogui

Replace the angle-bracketed text with the actual launcher filename. The 2G value is an example starting heap, not an AOF7 requirement. Increase or decrease it only after observing memory use and tick performance, and never allocate more memory than the machine can provide while leaving room for the operating system.

Run the first launch and accept the EULA

4. Start once to generate files

Run the supplied script (or the Fabric command) from inside the server directory. The Fabric Server Launcher is an executable JAR that downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files before continuing with the server. The first run can therefore take longer and may create additional folders and configuration files.

When generation is complete, stop the process cleanly from the console rather than closing the terminal window. A clean stop lets the server finish writing world data and logs.

5. Review the EULA

Open the generated EULA file and read Mojang’s terms. The server will not proceed normally until the operator accepts them. Change the acceptance setting only if you agree to the terms, save the file, and start the server again. Keep the EULA file with the rest of the installation; deleting it simply causes the server to generate it again.

Configure the world and access policy

6. Edit server.properties

Stop the server before editing server.properties. Set the options appropriate for your group:

  • World name: choose the directory name for a new world. Treat a changed world name as a different save unless you intentionally move or rename the existing folder.
  • Difficulty: select the level your players expect before beginning a long-term world.
  • View distance: start conservatively for a heavily modded pack, then raise it only if tick time and memory remain healthy.
  • Whitelist: enable it for a private group and add players through the server console.
  • Online-mode policy: keep the setting appropriate for your authentication and access requirements; changing it can alter who is allowed to connect.

Make a backup of server.properties and the world before changing world-generation, access, or performance settings. Some changes affect only newly generated chunks, while others can change who can join immediately.

7. Launch to a ready state

Start the server again and wait for the console to report that it is ready for connections. The first successful launch may still produce warnings from individual mods; investigate an actual crash or repeated error rather than treating every warning as fatal. Keep the console visible during initial testing so you can capture the first relevant error.

Connect a matching AOF7 client

Install the same AOF7 release on the client, select Minecraft 1.20.1, and use the Fabric profile supplied for that pack. The client’s mods must be built for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric. A client on another AOF7 release can fail even when both releases are labeled AOF7, because registry data, configuration defaults, or mod versions may differ.

Test first from the same machine or local network. Enter the server address shown by your hosting setup, then watch both the client and server logs if the connection fails. Once a local connection works, test from an external network before inviting the rest of the group.

Make a home server reachable from the internet

8. Check the host machine

  • Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the port configured in server.properties.
  • Allow that port through the operating-system firewall for the Java process or server application.
  • Give the host machine a stable local address so a router rule does not point to a different device later.

9. Configure the router and ISP path

Create a port-forwarding rule from the router’s external port to the server machine’s local address and the port used by the server. Router menus differ by manufacturer and firmware, so the exact labels and screens vary. Confirm that your internet provider permits inbound connections; carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) or an inbound block can prevent outside players from reaching a correctly configured home server.

Ask a player on a different network to test the connection. A successful local test does not prove that forwarding, firewall rules, and the ISP path are correct.

Memory and performance tuning

No cited AOF7 page publishes a universal minimum RAM requirement. The pack’s workload changes with exploration, chunk generation, automation, shaders, number of players, and loaded dimensions. Treat the heap as a tuning variable rather than a fixed specification.

  • Watch the server log and operating-system memory while players explore and generate chunks.
  • If ticks lag, lower view distance and simulation distance before simply assigning more memory.
  • Reduce concurrent chunk generation and other intensive activity when diagnosing spikes.
  • Increase the -Xmx value only when the host has unused RAM after reserving memory for the operating system and other services.
  • Keep a consistent launch script so you can compare performance after each change.

Out-of-memory errors point to insufficient available heap or a workload spike; persistent tick lag can also come from CPU limits, chunk generation, or a mod interaction. Record the first error and the circumstances in which it occurred instead of changing several settings at once.

Troubleshoot common AOF7 server failures

Java class-version or “requires Java” errors

  1. Run java -version in the same terminal or script context used to start the server.
  2. Confirm it reports Java 17, not an older runtime or Java 21 selected by another PATH entry.
  3. Inspect the start script for a hard-coded Java path or an overriding environment variable.
  4. Restart the terminal after changing PATH, then launch again.

Missing mod, loader mismatch, or incompatible-version errors

Compare the client and server pack release numbers first. Then verify that every mod is for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric; Fabric’s installation guidance recommends filtering downloads by both criteria. Remove manually added files that are not part of the selected server archive, and restore the original pack files if an update left a partial installation.

The server starts but a player is disconnected

  • Read the first meaningful error in the server log at the time of the disconnect.
  • Compare the client and server mod lists and configuration files.
  • Try a clean client instance of the same AOF7 release to rule out a damaged or customized client.
  • Check whether the problem occurs for one player or everyone; a single-player failure often indicates a client-side file or configuration difference.

Out-of-memory errors or severe tick lag

Lower view and simulation distance, reduce simultaneous exploration or automation, and monitor heap usage. Increase the heap only within the host’s actual capacity. Because there is no pack-wide RAM guarantee, document the workload and the settings that trigger the issue when deciding whether a larger machine is justified.

Remote players cannot connect

  1. Verify that the server process is listening on the configured port.
  2. Check the operating-system firewall rule.
  3. Confirm that the router forwards to the correct local machine and port.
  4. Determine whether the ISP uses CGNAT or blocks inbound traffic.
  5. Retest from a different network after each change.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting is best when you want complete filesystem and JVM control and are comfortable maintaining Java, updates, backups, and networking. Managed hosting is easier when you prefer a panel and provider-maintained infrastructure. A provider still needs explicit support for Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric, and your chosen AOF7 release.

Consideration Self-hosted server Managed hosting
Control Full access to files, JVM arguments, logs, worlds, and scripts. Panel-based controls with less direct infrastructure access.
Setup effort You extract the pack, install Java, configure networking, update files, and maintain backups. Modpack installation and server management are integrated into the provider workflow.
Capacity decisions Limited by your machine’s CPU, RAM, storage, and internet upload capacity. Choose a plan based on RAM, CPU, storage, region, backups, and player workload.
Published example pricing No hosting subscription; hardware and connectivity are your responsibility. Modrinth Hosting lists, when billed quarterly, $10 per month for 4 GB RAM, $15 per month for 6 GB, and $20 per month for 8 GB. Custom plans start at $5 per month. Prices and availability can change.

Before paying for a managed plan, confirm the exact AOF7 release, Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric support, storage limits, backup policy, geographic region, and whether you can upload or edit the pack’s configuration files. A cheap plan with insufficient CPU or storage can perform worse than a smaller but better-balanced option.

Backups, updates, and safe maintenance

Back up the complete working state

Stop the server before copying files. Back up the world, config, defaultconfigs, server.properties, and the launch scripts. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory. Label backups with the AOF7 release and date so you know which files belong together.

Stage an AOF7 update

  1. Record the current pack release and make a verified backup.
  2. Extract the new server archive into a separate test directory.
  3. Copy only the data you intentionally want to carry forward, checking configuration changes rather than blindly overwriting everything.
  4. Start the test copy and connect with a clean client running the new release.
  5. Only after the test succeeds, schedule downtime, back up the live server again, and apply the update.

Never update a live world while the server is running. If the new pack causes a crash or broken world, stop, restore the previous directory and backup, and investigate on the test copy.

Final launch checklist

  • Java 17, 64-bit, is installed and verified with java -version.
  • The server archive and client use one recorded AOF7 release.
  • Minecraft is 1.20.1 and the loader is Fabric on both sides.
  • The dedicated server pack was extracted into a clean directory.
  • The first launch generated files and the EULA was accepted by the operator.
  • server.properties has the intended world, difficulty, view distance, whitelist, and online-mode settings.
  • The console reaches a ready state and a clean client can join locally.
  • Firewall, router forwarding, and ISP restrictions have been tested before inviting remote players.
  • World and configuration backups exist before any update or major setting change.
