The reliable way to set up an All of Fabric 5 (AOF5) server is to match the modpack’s exact Minecraft release, use the corresponding Fabric server launcher and Java runtime, install every mod in the pack, then accept Minecraft’s EULA before restarting. You can either choose a host that offers AOF5 as a one-click installation, or install the server files yourself for more control.

AOF5 version information is inconsistent across current listings: references describe it as a Minecraft 1.18 or 1.18.1 pack, while Fabric’s launcher now presents much newer Minecraft releases. Confirm the version on the modpack’s own download page before selecting Fabric or Java.

Choose between hosted and self-hosted AOF5
Your first decision determines how much setup work you do and how much control you retain.
Hosted installation: least manual work
Several Minecraft hosts provide All of Fabric 5 in their modpack selectors. Their control panels install the pack and the server software together, so you do not have to assemble a Fabric directory by hand. This is the practical choice when you want a server online quickly or do not want to maintain Java, loader files and startup scripts yourself.

- Open the host’s Minecraft server setup or modpack selector.
- Choose the Fabric launcher option, then search the built-in modpack menu for “All of Fabric.”
- Select the AOF5 entry that matches the Minecraft version used by your players.
- Apply the installation and wait for the panel to finish downloading the server and mod files.
- Start the server from the panel. The first launch can take longer while files are generated.
One-click installation does not remove the need for version discipline. If the host lists several AOF5 entries, compare their Minecraft version labels with the version shown on the pack’s own page. A client running a different Minecraft or modpack version will not be able to join reliably.
Self-hosting: more control, more maintenance
Self-hosting lets you choose the machine, Java runtime, world settings and mod files. It also means you are responsible for installing the correct Fabric loader, keeping the pack synchronized with clients and diagnosing startup errors. Use this route when you need direct access to the server directory or want to control configuration rather than relying on a host’s preset.

Do not select the newest Minecraft release simply because it is offered by the Fabric installer. Search-result listings identify AOF5 as a Minecraft 1.18.1 build in one case and as a pack made for Minecraft 1.18 in another. The official CurseForge and Modrinth entries were not verified in the available material, so the exact target release remains a detail you must check directly on the current AOF5 download page.
The target version controls all of the following:
- Which Fabric installer and loader you select.
- Which Java runtime the server can use.
- Which mod JAR files belong in the
mods/directory. - Whether existing client installations can connect.
- Whether an older world can be opened safely.
Write down the exact Minecraft version shown by the AOF5 download entry before proceeding. Treat a label such as “1.18.1” as a requirement, not as a suggestion. If a host or launcher displays a different AOF5 release, stop and resolve the discrepancy rather than combining files from both versions.
Java and Fabric requirements
Use the Java version expected by the Minecraft release
The Fabric Wiki recommends Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later. Fabric’s server installer output also reports that Minecraft 26.1 and newer require Java 25. Those statements apply to the Minecraft release selected in the installer, not automatically to every AOF5 installation. An AOF5 build targeting 1.18.x may have different runtime expectations.
When you run the installer, read the Java note it prints for the selected Minecraft version. If that note conflicts with a host’s default Java setting, change the server’s Java runtime before troubleshooting mods. Running a pack with the wrong Java version can produce an immediate startup failure even when the mod files are correct.

Select the matching Fabric launcher
Fabric’s server page offers a launcher for each Minecraft version. A search-result snapshot dated 28 September 2026 showed Minecraft 26.3 with Fabric Loader 0.19.5 and installer 1.1.2, with “latest” resolving to 26.3 at that time. Those values are volatile and are not evidence that AOF5 supports 26.3. Select the launcher entry for AOF5’s target version instead of using the page’s default latest option.
Use the official Fabric server installer page, choose the Minecraft version required by AOF5, and let the launcher download the game and loader on its first run. Keep the installer output available: it identifies the files created and may state the Java version expected by that Minecraft release.
Self-hosted AOF5 setup, step by step
1. Prepare a dedicated server directory
Create an empty folder that will contain the server files and world. Keeping AOF5 separate from other Minecraft installations prevents an unrelated mods/ folder or configuration file from being loaded accidentally. Use a path you can back up and access with the account that will run the server.
Do not copy an old world or another modpack into this directory before the first successful launch. Establish a clean baseline first; otherwise, a failure could come from an inherited configuration rather than AOF5 itself.
2. Download the AOF5 server files
Obtain the server files from the current AOF5 entry on Modrinth or CurseForge. Confirm the Minecraft version shown beside the download and keep the downloaded archive intact until you have checked its contents. The client’s modpack download and a dedicated server bundle are not always arranged identically, so use the server files when the project provides them.
3. Extract the archive into the server folder
Extract the downloaded files directly into the directory prepared in step 1. After extraction, verify that the pack’s mod JAR files are available and that there is a mods/ directory or a clear set of files intended to populate one. Do not leave the mods buried inside a second nested archive directory; the Fabric server must be able to read them from its active server path.

4. Run the Fabric server installer
Open the Fabric server installer from the official Fabric server page and select the exact Minecraft version recorded earlier. The installer creates the Fabric launch files and downloads the selected game and loader on first run. Follow the installer’s displayed output rather than substituting a loader marked “latest.”
If the installer reports a Java requirement, satisfy it before starting the server. A successful installer run does not prove that AOF5 itself is compatible with the selected release; it only confirms that the Fabric server components for that release were obtained.

Place the AOF5 mod JAR files in the server’s mods/ folder. The client and server must use a matching AOF5 release and compatible dependency set. Do not mix individual mods downloaded for another Minecraft version, even when their names look similar. A single incompatible dependency can stop the server before it creates a usable world.
A healthy directory will resemble this layout:

(other files created by the installer and first launch)The exact filenames can change with the installer and Minecraft release. Treat the layout as a location guide, not a promise that every release creates identical files.
6. Start the server once
Launch the Fabric server using the startup file or command supplied by the installer output. The first run may stop after generating eula.txt; that is expected when the EULA has not yet been accepted. Read the console output before closing the window. It usually identifies whether the stop was caused by the EULA, Java, a missing dependency or a version mismatch.
7. Accept the EULA
Open eula.txt in the server directory and change the setting to:

eula=trueSave the file exactly in the server root, then start the same Fabric launch process again. The server will not come online while this value remains false or while the file is missing. Accepting the EULA is a prerequisite for operation, not an optional configuration tweak.
8. Let the world finish generating
After the restart, wait for the console to complete world creation before attempting to connect. Stop the server through its normal console stop process rather than closing the window abruptly. Make a copy of the newly created world and configuration before changing multiple settings; that gives you a clean rollback point if a later mod or configuration change prevents startup.

- Open the host’s Minecraft instance creation screen.
- Activate the Fabric launcher option.
- Use the built-in search to find All of Fabric.
- Choose the AOF5 release whose Minecraft version matches your clients.
- Apply the modpack installation and allow the panel to complete.
- Start the instance and inspect the console for the first successful launch.
Because the host supplies the server files, you normally do not need to extract an archive or place each JAR manually. You still need to check the panel’s Java selector, RAM allocation and version label. If the panel installed a newer or older AOF5 release than the one on your players’ computers, reinstall or switch the instance before creating a permanent world.

Published hosting guidance is an estimate, not an independently measured benchmark. The figures below come from hosting providers and describe their own recommendations.

For a group server, budget 8 GB first rather than treating 5 GB as a universal requirement. Reduce or increase the allocation only after observing the server under the real player count and exploration pattern. Allocating more memory cannot repair a wrong Minecraft version, missing dependency or unsuitable Java runtime.
Initial configuration and world-generation advice
Set view distance deliberately
The AOF5 setup guidance recommends a view distance of 10. Set that value in the server configuration after the first successful launch, then restart so the setting is applied consistently. A larger distance increases the amount of world data the server must keep active; do not raise it simply because the machine has unused memory.

The same guidance recommends pre-generating the world with Chunky. Pre-generation creates terrain before players travel through unexplored areas, reducing the chance that everyone’s first exploration trip becomes the server’s heaviest workload. Run the pre-generation process before inviting a full group, monitor the console while it works and keep a backup of the world beforehand.
These two settings are tuning suggestions, not substitutes for matching versions and dependencies. Apply them only after the unmodified server starts cleanly.
Troubleshooting the most common failed starts
The console says the EULA has not been accepted
- Stop the server.
- Open
eula.txtin the active server directory. - Change the line to
eula=true. - Save the file without creating a second copy such as
eula.txt.txt. - Start the server again using the same launcher.
If the message returns, confirm that you edited the file in the directory used by the startup process. Hosts can expose more than one instance directory, and editing an unrelated folder will not change the file the server reads.
The server starts with the wrong Java version
Check the Minecraft release selected in the Fabric installer and compare it with the Java guidance printed by the installer. Java 21 is the Fabric Wiki recommendation for 1.20.5 and newer, while installer output says 26.1 and newer require Java 25. Change the runtime selected by the host or the runtime used by your startup process, then launch again. Do not diagnose mod compatibility until Java satisfies the selected release.

Players receive a version or mod mismatch
Compare the client and server Minecraft versions, Fabric loader versions and AOF5 release labels. Reinstall the exact same pack release on every client rather than replacing one or two JAR files by guesswork. Confirm that the server’s mods/ folder contains the intended files and that an older pack was not left in the directory.
The installer selected a newer Minecraft than AOF5 supports
Return to the AOF5 download page, identify its target Minecraft version and rerun the Fabric installer for that version. The “latest” entry in Fabric’s interface is not automatically the correct entry for an older modpack. The snapshot showing Minecraft 26.3, Fabric Loader 0.19.5 and installer 1.1.2 was current on 28 September 2026, but it does not establish AOF5 compatibility with that release.
An older launcher expects a different filename
A Shockbyte guide reports these older naming conventions: for Minecraft 1.16.5 or older, rename fabric-server-launch.jar to custom.jar; for 1.17, use custom-java16.jar; for 1.18 or newer, use custom-java17.jar. Verify the requirement against the current host panel and launcher output before renaming anything, because naming conventions can change. Do not rename files merely because an older guide lists them if the current installer supplies a different startup process.
Hosted versus self-hosted: which path fits?

Choose hosted installation when speed and convenience matter most. Choose self-hosting when you need direct file and configuration control. In either case, the decisive safeguards are identical: verify AOF5’s Minecraft version, use the matching Fabric and Java versions, install the complete mod set and set eula=true before restarting.
