The MIDI activity indicator in the toolbar should flash. If it does, the controller is working. The rest of this guide covers the extra steps for the MPK Mini IV, drum pads, and what to do if nothing happens.
Check which MPK Mini you have
Akai has released several generations, and the setup details differ between them. Check the model name printed on the unit before following any model-specific step. The basic MIDI-input method below applies broadly. The control-script and port instructions are documented by Akai for the MPK Mini IV only, and shouldn’t be assumed for older units.

Basic setup: get notes into FL Studio
MIDI carries control data, not sound. Image-Line’s FL Studio manual puts it this way: “MIDI does not transmit audio, it is a control-data connection (keyboard notes, knob movements, sound/program changes).” The MPK Mini sends the notes, and a software instrument inside FL Studio makes the sound. So you need both a connected input and an instrument.
- Connect the controller. Use the cable that suits your model. Akai identifies the included connection on the MPK Mini IV as USB-C. Plug in before opening FL Studio if you can.
- Open the MIDI settings. In FL Studio, go to Options > MIDI Settings.
- Select and enable the input. In the Input list, click the MPK Mini entry, then click Enable.
- Choose a controller type. If your exact model appears in the controller-type menu, select it. If not, Image-Line says a generic controller setting can work for basic note input.
- Load an instrument. Add a software instrument, such as one from the Channel Rack, and make sure it is the selected channel. By default, an enabled controller plays the selected channel.
- Test. Press a key. The MIDI activity indicator should flash and you should hear the instrument.
MPK Mini IV: control script and ports
If you want transport and knob control from the MPK Mini IV, and not just notes, Akai provides a model-specific FL Studio setup. Akai’s guide applies to FL Studio 2024 onwards and specifies firmware v1.38 or later. These are the requirements for that guide and for this model only. Both are volatile, so check Akai’s current downloads page for the latest script and firmware.

Basic input or control script?
| Approach | Best for | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Basic MIDI input | Playing notes on keys and pads | Controller detected and enabled in MIDI Settings; any model |
| Akai control script | Notes plus DAW transport and knob control on MPK Mini IV | MPK Mini IV, firmware v1.38+, FL Studio 2024 onwards, script from inMusic Software Center, separate MIDI and DAW ports |
Setting up the drum pads
Akai’s MPK Series guide for FL Studio suggests selecting an FL Studio preset on the controller and using FPC (FL Studio’s drum pad instrument) for a simple pad-to-drum layout. Pad note numbers can differ between DAWs and plug-ins. If a pad triggers the wrong sound or nothing at all, check which notes the target instrument expects before remapping the pads.

- Operating system: Confirm the computer detects the controller. Try another USB port or cable.
- Connected after launch: Refresh the device list in MIDI Settings, or reconnect the controller and restart FL Studio.
- Not enabled: Reselect the MPK Mini input and click Enable again.
- Activity flashes but no sound: The input works, but no instrument is selected or loaded, or the selected channel is muted or has no sound source. Select a channel with an instrument.
- MPK Mini IV only: Check the firmware, the installed script, the DAW preset on the controller, and that the MIDI and DAW ports have different numbers.
You don’t need to buy anything extra. A replacement cable matters only if yours fails, and then it must match your model’s generation and connector. A sustain pedal is optional; Akai identifies a sustain input on the MPK Mini IV, but basic setup doesn’t need one.
