To share an AirTag, first register it to your Apple Account, then invite family members from Find My. They can see the tagged item only after accepting the invitation. This shares access to an object’s location—not a person’s live location.
Before you begin
- For an original AirTag, Apple’s setup guidance requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later.
- The owner needs two-factor authentication enabled for their Apple Account. Each invited person needs an Apple Account, must be signed in to iCloud, and must have iCloud Keychain enabled. Apple’s sharing requirements specify iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, or later for the owner and borrowers.
- Child accounts cannot be added as borrowers.
- One owner can share an AirTag with up to five other people at a time: six users total, including the owner.
These requirements and limits are from Apple Support’s setup and current iOS 27 user-guide material surfaced on October 3, 2026. Button wording can vary by operating-system version and language.

Set up the AirTag
- Unlock your iPhone or iPad and hold the AirTag close to it.
- When the setup card appears, tap Connect.
- Choose a suggested category, or give the AirTag a custom name and emoji.
- Confirm that you want to register it to your Apple Account, then tap Done.
Once registered, the AirTag appears in Find My under Items. It can be registered to only one Apple Account at a time. If it belongs to someone else’s account, that account’s owner must remove it before you can set it up.
Share the AirTag with family
- Open Find My and select Items.
- Select the AirTag you want to share and open its sharing controls.
- Add the family member by selecting or entering the Apple Account they use with iCloud.
- Complete the invitation. The person must accept it before the AirTag appears in their Items list.
Apple’s current guide describes the navigation, but the precise button labels may differ by iOS version or locale. Look for the AirTag’s option to share the item rather than a control for sharing your own location. Find My shows the owner the invitation status.

- SHARE ITEM LOCATION — Share AirTag location access temporarily and securely with trusted contacts, third parties, or over 50 airline partners if you lose something important.
A person who belongs to the same Family Sharing group can also ask the owner to share an AirTag that has not yet been shared through Find My. That request route is limited to members of the same Family Sharing group; it does not make item sharing the same feature as location sharing.
What family members can see and do
People in the sharing group can see the AirTag’s location in Find My and use supported item-finding actions. While a person is in the group, Apple says unwanted-tracking notifications for that shared AirTag are suppressed for them. If they leave the group or the owner removes them, they lose location access and tracking notifications resume.

To end sharing, open the AirTag in Find My, select the person, and choose the control to stop sharing. The removed person then loses access to that item’s location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAirTag sharing is not personal-location sharing
Family Sharing location features let people choose whether to share their own location through Find My, Messages, and Maps. Sharing an AirTag instead gives other people access to a tagged object in Find My. Setting up item sharing does not mean that anyone has agreed to share their personal location.

- Simple one-tap setup instantly connects AirTag with your iPhone or iPad
- Play a sound on the built-in speaker to help find your things, or just ask Siri for help
- Precision Finding with Ultra Wideband technology leads you right to your nearby AirTag (on select iPhone models)

How location updates and finding work
An AirTag’s map location updates when it connects to the Find My network. If Find My cannot locate it, the app may show where and when it was last located and offer Notify When Found. When the tag is nearby, you can also make it play a sound.
Precision Finding can guide a nearby user to a tag only when the user’s device supports the feature and is close enough. Apple’s current iOS 27 guide says iPhone 15 and later support exact location, while Apple’s support guidance describes the requirement in terms of an iPhone with Ultra Wideband. Walls and other environmental conditions can affect performance. Do not expect continuous live tracking or precise directions on every compatible device and in every setting.

If setup or sharing does not work
The setup card does not appear
- Check that the iPhone or iPad meets the operating-system requirement for your AirTag generation.
- Wake and unlock the device, then wait for the setup animation to return. If it disappeared, Apple suggests putting the device to sleep and waking and unlocking it again.
- Confirm that the device is set up with an Apple Account.
More than one AirTag is nearby
If the iPhone or iPad reports multiple AirTags, move all but one away and try again. Set up tags one at a time.
The AirTag still will not pair
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance suggests checking the battery and restarting the iPhone or iPad; resetting the AirTag may also be necessary. If the tag is linked to a different Apple Account, its current owner must remove it first.
Find My will not add another item
Apple’s guide gives a limit of 32 Find My items, counting shared items and accessories. If you have reached that limit, you may need to remove an item before adding another.
