How to Set Up an 8,000 Hz Wireless Gaming Mouse and Check Its Polling Rate

To use 8,000 Hz wirelessly, you need a mouse and receiver that explicitly support that rate together. Update and pair them with the manufacturer’s software, select the highest supported polling rate, position the receiver as recommended, then verify with a suitable test utility. A browser checker alone may not accurately measure high report rates.

What 8,000 Hz polling means

Polling rate is how often a mouse sends data to the computer. At 8,000 Hz, the mouse can send up to 8,000 reports per second—eight times the reports at 1,000 Hz, according to Razer. That corresponds to a 0.125 ms report interval at 8,000 Hz versus 1 ms at 1,000 Hz. Those intervals describe reporting frequency; they do not establish total click-to-display or in-game latency. Check compatibility before setup

Start with the exact mouse model, not just its brand or a general “high polling” label. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and compatibility information for wireless 8,000 Hz support, the required receiver, and any firmware requirements. A mouse may support a high rate over one connection method but not another.

For example, Razer’s HyperPolling Wireless Dongle, model RC30-04410, is an 8,000 Hz receiver for compatible Razer mice; it is not a universal adapter. Confirm compatibility on Razer’s product page before buying or attempting to pair it. The supported models and setup steps depend on the mouse and receiver combination.

Set up the mouse and receiver

  1. Open the manufacturer’s device utility. Install or launch the software specified for your mouse and receiver. Menu names and paths vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming there is a universal polling-rate menu.
  2. Update required firmware. Check for updates for both the mouse and receiver if the manufacturer provides them. Razer’s firmware updater entry for RC30-04410 describes updating the dongle and compatible mouse; see Razer’s firmware updater instructions.
  3. Pair the mouse and receiver. Use the manufacturer’s pairing workflow if they are not already paired. A receiver that is not paired or supported may prevent the expected rate from appearing.
  4. Select the rate. In the device utility, choose 8,000 Hz if it is listed and supported for your current wireless setup. If it is absent, check the exact mouse, receiver, and firmware compatibility before troubleshooting the computer.
  5. Position the receiver. Use a direct connection or the supplied extension arrangement if that helps keep the receiver near the mouse. For Razer HyperPolling Wireless, Razer recommends placing the dongle within 30 cm, in line of sight, and away from active USB 3 hubs where possible. These placement directions are specific to that product, not a universal distance rule. Razer HyperPolling guidance

How to check the polling rate

Prefer a test utility from the mouse manufacturer when one is available, or use a standalone polling-rate tester. Move the mouse continuously across a broad area for a representative sample, rather than relying on a single instant reading. Results may fluctuate: Logitech notes that its mice can dynamically vary their rate, and that browser-based tools may not correctly process high report rates. Treat third-party readings as estimates under the conditions of that test, not a definitive hardware diagnosis. Logitech’s polling-rate measurement guidance

What to try if 8,000 Hz is missing or unstable

  • The 8,000 Hz option is missing: Verify that the exact mouse supports wireless 8,000 Hz with the receiver you are using. Check required firmware and follow the vendor’s pairing steps; compatibility is model-specific.
  • A browser checker shows a lower or fluctuating rate: Do not conclude that the mouse is faulty from that result alone. Browser tools can mishandle high rates, and some mice vary their report rate dynamically. Check with the manufacturer’s utility or a standalone tool.
  • Movement stutters or frame rate drops: Confirm compatibility and firmware, close unnecessary CPU-heavy applications, and compare the result in the actual game. Try stepping down through available rates—Razer suggests trying 4,000 or 2,000 Hz when problems occur—and compare smoothness and frame rate at each setting. Logitech notes that some users may see FPS drops above 1 kHz; game-engine limits, CPU capacity, and additional USB traffic can also matter. Razer’s troubleshooting guidance and Logitech’s performance notes

Choose the rate that works best in your games

Use 8,000 Hz only if your mouse-and-receiver combination supports it and your system remains stable. Compare settings in the games you actually play: check frame-rate stability and how movement feels, alongside the accuracy and method of your polling-rate measurement. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a common battery-life comparison across models, so check your mouse’s own specifications if wireless runtime is part of your decision.
