Choose the right alert path before you change any settings
X has separate controls for broad activity notifications and for posts from a particular account. They solve different problems:

For a single important account, start with the per-account alert. Add only the broad categories you actually need. If the purpose is to know whether X is experiencing a wider failure, add an independent monitor rather than assuming an X post notification will work through the incident.

Plan an alert policy that matches the information you need
Before enabling every switch, define the event you are trying to catch. “A particular account posted” calls for an account-level alert. “Someone mentioned me” or “I received a direct message” calls for a broad activity category. “The service may be unavailable” calls for a separate status path. Keeping those purposes distinct prevents a large volume of recommendations from obscuring a critical post.

For an emergency-information account, All posts may be appropriate if interruptions are acceptable. For an account that broadcasts only occasionally, Only posts with live video can reduce noise while preserving live-broadcast notices. If you follow many sources, reserve account alerts for the few that justify immediate attention and use the Posts section periodically to remove stale choices.
Also decide where an alert must appear. Mobile push is useful when you are away from a desk. X.com web notifications are visible while you are signed in. Browser notifications can reach you away from X.com, but only when the browser, operating system, and X permissions all allow them. An independent monitor should use a channel that does not depend on the same X session.
Turn on mobile push notifications
The general mobile controls determine which kinds of activity X is allowed to send to your phone. They are separate from the switch on an individual account’s profile.
Open the push-notification settings
- Open the X mobile app and tap your profile icon.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Notifications.
- Tap Preferences, then Push notifications.
- Select the notification categories you want.
Depending on the app version and platform, the list can include mentions, replies, reposts, likes, new followers, direct messages, recommendations, news, Spaces, crisis and emergency alerts, and other categories. The exact set can change, so use the labels shown in your own app rather than treating this list as permanent.
Keep broad alerts under control
Broad categories can create noise when several are enabled at once. A practical starting point is to enable direct messages, mentions, replies, and any emergency or crisis category that is relevant to you, then add other categories only when you have a reason to receive them. Account-specific post alerts are usually a better fit for a small number of high-priority sources than enabling every recommendation or news category.
Check the phone’s permission separately
The app setting is only one half of delivery. Your phone’s operating system must also permit X to post notifications. If nothing arrives, inspect the device notification permissions for X and then return to the app’s Push notifications page. X’s mobile-notification help also points to iOS troubleshooting for missed notifications; the available guidance does not guarantee a delivery time or identify every operating-system cause.
Get notified when one X account posts
Use the account-level control when you care about updates from a particular organization, emergency-information source, or other account.

Enable all posts or live video only
- Open the account’s profile in the X app.
- Tap the notification icon on that profile.
- Choose All posts for post alerts, or Only posts with live video if live broadcasts are the only updates you need.
This setting applies to that account and is independent of the general Push notifications categories. If you choose All posts, X still does not promise that every post will produce an immediate notification.
Turn the account alert off
Return to the same profile and tap its notification icon. Select None to stop the account-specific alerts.
Review followed-account post alerts
The app’s Push notifications settings include a Posts section for reviewing alerts associated with accounts you follow. Use it to check which followed-account alerts are active when your list has grown or when you no longer need a source.
Configure X.com web and browser notifications
Web notifications and browser notifications are related but not identical. Web notifications are available inside X.com while you are logged in. A browser notification can reach you away from the site when the browser and operating system support it and you have granted permission.
Set web-notification categories and audience
- Sign in at X.com.
- Open the profile menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Web notifications.
- Choose the categories you want and set the audience. X provides choices tailored to accounts you follow and a broader By anyone option.
- Save the changes.
Choose the narrowest audience that meets your need. Selecting By anyone can broaden the stream considerably; a follow-based choice is more selective.
Allow browser notifications
- Stay in Settings → Web notifications.
- Choose Turn on browser notifications.
- When the browser asks for permission, allow notifications for X.com.
X describes browser notifications for supported Chrome and Firefox setups. Your browser’s own permission panel can override the X setting, so both permissions must remain enabled. Browser notifications can appear while you are away from X.com, but they still depend on an active browser, the operating system’s notification settings, and X’s service.
Understand what an X notification can—and cannot—tell you
X explicitly cautions that you may not receive a notification every time there is activity related to you and your posts. Push notifications can be personalized using device signals, followed accounts and similar accounts, topics, and previous engagement. An enabled preference is therefore a request for relevant alerts, not a promise of immediate delivery for every post.

That limitation matters most during an outage. If X itself, its notification service, or your route to the service is failing, an X-generated push or browser message is not an independent warning channel. You might receive a delayed message, receive nothing, or be unable to open the post that generated it. A missed notification by itself does not prove that X is experiencing a platform-wide outage.

The status-site reference is limited
X’s limits guidance says it may post an update on its status site when technical limits are temporarily reduced during heavy site usage. That supports checking the status site when you can reach it, but it does not establish that the site reports every outage or offers a dedicated subscriber alert service. Do not treat the reference as proof of an always-on outage subscription.
Add an independent channel for outage awareness
When the goal is to learn that X is unavailable, use a channel that does not rely solely on X’s own notification pipeline. An independent status-monitoring service is one possible complement. For example, IsDown describes monitoring X’s official status information and user reports and sending alerts. That is the provider’s description, not evidence of a guaranteed response time, complete coverage, or reliable delivery in every incident. Check its current monitoring methods and supported alert channels before depending on it.
Use the independent monitor as a complement
- Keep X account alerts for posts and live broadcasts from the sources you follow.
- Use the independent monitor for a separate signal that a service may be impaired.
- Compare the monitor’s notice with your own symptoms and X’s status information when available.
- Do not infer that a provider covers every X component, region, or type of failure unless its current documentation says so.
This two-channel design separates two questions: “Did this account publish something?” and “Is X functioning normally?” No single X preference answers both.
Evaluate an outage monitor before relying on it
- Coverage: Identify whether it watches official status information, user reports, or both, and which X components it names.
- Delivery: Confirm which alert channels are currently offered and whether they are independent of your X login.
- Scope: Check whether notices distinguish regional, component-specific, and broad incidents.
- Verification: Compare a notice with your own connection and with X’s status information when that information is reachable.
These checks do not turn a third-party service into a guarantee. They simply prevent you from assuming that a monitor’s presence means complete or instantaneous outage detection.
Use a simple setup for an outage-sensitive account
For updates from one account
- Open the account’s profile.
- Set its notification icon to All posts, or to Only posts with live video when that is all you need.
- In Settings and privacy → Notifications → Preferences → Push notifications, confirm that the relevant post category is not disabled.
- Check the phone’s notification permission for X.
For several accounts without excessive noise
- Enable account-level alerts only for the accounts whose updates justify an interruption.
- Use broad push categories selectively for mentions, replies, direct messages, or other activity you actually monitor.
- Review the Posts section periodically and remove alerts for accounts that are no longer important.
For outage detection
- Keep the X alerts above for normal account activity.
- Check X’s status information when X.com is reachable.
- Configure a separate status-monitoring channel after verifying its present coverage and delivery options.
Verify the setup instead of assuming it works
After changing settings, perform a quiet review while X is operating normally. Confirm that the account profile shows the intended choice, that the Push notifications page still has the needed category enabled, and that the phone or browser permission remains allowed. On the web, verify both the audience selection and the saved state. A setting that is enabled in X can still be blocked at the browser or operating-system level.
Do not use one missed alert as a delivery test: X says activity does not always generate a notification. Instead, treat the review as a configuration check. If an organization you follow maintains another verified channel, note it in your outage plan so you have a way to check important information when X cannot be opened.

Troubleshoot missing alerts and access problems
No mobile alert arrives
- Confirm the account-level choice is All posts or Only posts with live video, rather than None.
- Recheck Settings and privacy → Notifications → Preferences → Push notifications and the relevant category.
- Open the phone’s operating-system notification permissions and make sure X is allowed.
- Remember that X does not promise a notification for every activity, so one missing alert is not proof that the setting failed.
Web or browser alerts do not appear
- Confirm that Web notifications are enabled in Settings → Web notifications.
- Check whether the audience is restricted to followed accounts when you expected the broader By anyone choice.
- Verify that the browser has permission to notify you for X.com.
- Use a supported Chrome or Firefox setup if you are relying on browser notifications away from X.com.

X.com will not load
Do not assume immediately that the platform is down. Check your network connection first. X’s browser troubleshooting guidance includes trying a private window, updating the browser, clearing cache and cookies, and disabling extensions that could interfere with the site. If the problem persists across a normal and private window and across a known-good connection, consult available status information or your independent monitor.
An outage monitor reports a problem but X still works for you
A monitor can be observing a different component, region, or symptom from the one affecting your connection. Treat its alert as a prompt to investigate, not as a guarantee that every user is affected. Check the provider’s stated coverage and compare the report with your own access.
Common setup pitfalls
- Confusing account alerts with broad push settings: Turning on a profile icon does not replace checking the app’s Push notifications preferences.
- Assuming browser and web notifications are the same: Web notifications appear inside X.com; browser notifications require an additional browser permission.
- Choosing By anyone without considering volume: A broader audience can produce substantially more notices than a follow-based choice.
- Declaring an outage too quickly: A blocked extension, stale cache, disabled permission, or local network fault can prevent access without a platform-wide failure.
- Treating a third-party monitor as authoritative: Its alert reflects its own methods and coverage and should be checked against other symptoms.

Set expectations for timing and reliability
Neither the X setup pages nor the cited troubleshooting material provides a guaranteed delivery time for push, web, or browser notifications. Delivery can be affected by X’s notification service, your connection, device permissions, browser permissions, and the operating system. During a service incident, those dependencies can fail together. The safest wording for an internal procedure is “notifications are enabled,” not “every update will arrive immediately.”
For critical information, keep a second route that is genuinely independent of X.
