To connect AirPods to an iPhone for the first time, turn on Bluetooth, place both earbuds in their case, open the lid beside the iPhone, and follow the on-screen Connect prompt. If the animation does not appear, pair them manually from Settings > Bluetooth.

When AirPods will not connect, start with charging, Bluetooth, audio-output selection, and a second pairing attempt. Reset only after those checks, and use the procedure for your exact AirPods model: older cases have a setup button, newer cases use a front-panel tap gesture, and AirPods Max use a control on the headphones.

Prepare before you pair

A few checks prevent you from mistaking a charging or compatibility issue for a Bluetooth failure. Identify the AirPods model and the device you want to use, then make sure both earbuds are in the case and have enough charge. The case itself also needs power for setup and pairing.

  • Check whether the case has a physical setup button or a newer front-panel tap area.
  • Confirm the host device is running the latest software available for it.
  • Keep the case close to the phone, tablet, computer, or other Bluetooth host during setup.
  • Stop other nearby pairing attempts temporarily so a different device does not claim the AirPods.

AirPods generations have different operating-system requirements and controls. If a feature or setup card is missing, first verify that the model is supported by the device and its software rather than repeatedly resetting the earbuds.

Set up AirPods with an iPhone or iPad

The automatic setup flow is the quickest method for AirPods and AirPods Pro. It requires Bluetooth to be enabled and the earbuds to be inside their case.

  1. Unlock the iPhone or iPad and open Settings > Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
  2. Put both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
  3. Hold the open case next to the device. Keep the earbuds in the case while the setup card appears.
  4. Tap Connect, then follow any remaining on-screen instructions.
  5. Close the case after setup and play audio to confirm that the AirPods are the selected output.

Apple’s current setup guidance says an Apple Account can make AirPods available on supported Apple devices signed in to that same account. This is an automatic-connection convenience, not a promise that the earbuds will play from several devices simultaneously; the active audio destination still has to be selected by the operating system.

If the setup animation does not appear

Manual pairing uses the Bluetooth list. Leave the AirPods in the open case, put the case into pairing mode with the control required by your model, and look for the AirPods under Other Devices in Settings > Bluetooth. Tap the AirPods name when it appears. The pairing control is not identical across generations, so do not assume that a front-case tap works on a button-equipped case, or vice versa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the name does not appear, close the lid, wait briefly, reopen it beside the iPhone or iPad, and repeat the correct model-specific gesture. Keep both earbuds seated while you do this. If an old AirPods entry is already listed, remove that entry before trying to add the earbuds again.

Check the device requirements

AirPods models have different operating-system requirements and features. Identify the model before troubleshooting, then install the latest software available for the iPhone or iPad. If a setup card or feature is missing, the cause may be a model and operating-system compatibility limit rather than a Bluetooth fault.

Pair AirPods with a Mac

  1. On the Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Place the AirPods in their case, open the lid, and activate pairing mode using the control for your model. For AirPods Max, use the headphone control specified for pairing.
  3. When the AirPods appear in the Bluetooth device list, click Connect.
  4. Open Control Center > Sound and select the AirPods if the Mac continues using its built-in speakers.

The pairing gesture differs between older button-equipped cases, newer cases with a front tap area, and AirPods Max. If the Mac does not list the headphones, repeat the model-specific pairing gesture rather than repeatedly toggling Bluetooth.

Pairing and output selection are separate steps. A Mac can remember the AirPods while still sending sound to its internal speakers, a display, or another headset. Check the Sound destination immediately after connecting and test with a known audio source.

Use AirPods with Android, Windows, or another Bluetooth device

AirPods can work as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device. Apple’s guide states: “You can use AirPods as a Bluetooth® headset with a non-Apple device.” Siri is unavailable when AirPods are used with a non-Apple device.

  1. Open the other device’s Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth.
  2. Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid, or wake AirPods Max.
  3. Enter pairing mode with the control for the exact model. Older cases generally use their setup button; newer cases use the front-case gesture; AirPods Max use a headphone control.
  4. Select the AirPods from the available-device list and accept the pairing request.
  5. Choose the AirPods as the output and input device in the operating system’s sound settings.

Automatic Apple Account handoff does not apply in the same way on Android, Windows, or other non-Apple hardware. If you move the AirPods between devices, select them from that device’s Bluetooth list whenever they do not reconnect automatically.

On a computer, confirm both the playback device and microphone device if you need calls. Connecting successfully does not guarantee that the operating system has selected AirPods for both roles.

Identify the model before pairing or resetting

Pairing and reset instructions are model-dependent. Before pressing buttons or tapping the case, determine which hardware you have and whether the case has a physical setup button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
AirPods type Pairing control described by Apple What to avoid
Older AirPods and AirPods Pro cases with a button Use the setup button on the back of the case. Do not use a front-tap sequence intended for a newer case.
Newer AirPods cases without the traditional setup button Use the front-of-case tap gesture specified for that model. Do not keep holding an absent or nonfunctional button.
AirPods Max Use the control on the headphones for pairing and reset. Do not treat the headphones like an earbud charging case.

Apple’s model-specific setup and reset pages are the authority for the exact gesture and system requirements. The visible case design is a useful first check, but the model name in the device’s Bluetooth information or Apple’s identification instructions is safer when several generations look similar.

Fix AirPods that will not connect: a low-risk troubleshooting ladder

Work through these checks in order. They move from reversible causes to a reset, which clears the existing Bluetooth relationship.

1. Confirm that both earbuds are charging

  • Place both AirPods firmly in the case and close the lid.
  • Check that the case has charge. Connect it to power if the indicator does not respond or the case may be empty.
  • Reopen the lid and verify that both earbuds are recognized, not just one.
  • Inspect the seating of each earbud. An earbud that is not making contact may appear missing even though the other one connects.

Do not diagnose Bluetooth while one earbud is at zero charge or not detected by the case. Charging both sides removes the simplest explanation for one-sided or intermittent connection.

2. Check Bluetooth and software

  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone, tablet, Mac, or other host.
  • Keep the AirPods case open near the host during pairing.
  • Install the latest available operating-system update for the host device.
  • Temporarily move away from other Bluetooth pairing attempts so the wrong device does not capture the connection.

A Bluetooth switch that is on but unresponsive can be corrected by turning it off, waiting briefly, and turning it back on. If that does not help, restart the host device before changing the AirPods configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select AirPods as the audio destination

Sometimes pairing succeeded but sound is still routed to the phone speaker, Mac speakers, a car system, or another headset.

  • On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, tap the playback destination, and choose the AirPods.
  • On a Mac, open Control Center > Sound and select the AirPods.
  • On Android or Windows, open the sound-output controls and choose the AirPods for playback and, if needed, the microphone.

Raise the device volume and play a known audio source. If the AirPods appear as an output but produce no sound, test with both earbuds seated and check that the source itself is not paused or muted.

4. Retry pairing instead of resetting immediately

Close the case, wait a few seconds, reopen it beside the host, and repeat the pairing gesture for the model. If the AirPods are listed but stuck on “connecting,” remove the failed attempt from the host’s Bluetooth list, then start a fresh pairing attempt.

On Apple devices, the manual route is Settings > Bluetooth on iPhone or iPad and System Settings > Bluetooth on Mac. On another device, use its Bluetooth settings and select the AirPods from the available-device list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Remove an old pairing when the device keeps choosing the wrong record

An old Bluetooth record can prevent a clean connection after the AirPods have been used with another phone or computer. In the host’s Bluetooth settings, open the AirPods entry and choose the option labeled Forget This Device, Remove Device, or the equivalent. Then place the AirPods into pairing mode and add them again.

Removing a pairing record does not erase the AirPods themselves; it only tells that host to stop using its saved Bluetooth relationship. You will need to pair again on that host afterward. If several hosts remember the same AirPods, remove the stale entry from the device that keeps taking the connection, not from every device automatically.

Reset AirPods only after the basic checks

A reset is appropriate when charging, Bluetooth, audio-output selection, current software, and a fresh pairing attempt have not solved the problem. It clears the existing configuration, so use the correct model procedure and expect to pair the earbuds again.

Older button-equipped cases

Apple’s reset sequence for the older button-equipped designs begins with the case closed. Wait before opening it, remove the existing AirPods pairing from the host if it is still listed, then open the lid and hold the case setup button until the status light flashes amber and then white. The amber-to-white pattern indicates that the case has entered its reset and pairing state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The button must be held long enough for both light phases. Releasing at the first flash leaves the case in a different state and may not complete the reset.

Newer cases with a front tap area

Newer AirPods cases use a front-case tap sequence rather than the older rear setup button. The timing and number of taps are model-specific. Follow Apple’s instructions for the exact generation shown in your model identification information; do not substitute the button-case procedure or invent a tap pattern based only on appearance.

AirPods Max

AirPods Max do not use an earbud case button. Pairing and resetting are performed with a control on the headphones. Follow the AirPods Max procedure for the control and indicator-light sequence, then remove the old Bluetooth record and pair again from the host device.

Pair again after a successful reset

  1. Leave the reset AirPods close to the host with the case open, or wake AirPods Max.
  2. Open the host’s Bluetooth settings.
  3. Activate the correct model-specific pairing control.
  4. Select the AirPods when they appear and confirm the connection.
  5. Play audio and verify the output selection.

What the symptoms usually mean

Symptom Most useful first action Escalation
AirPods do not appear at all Charge both earbuds, turn on Bluetooth, open the case near the host, and repeat the correct pairing gesture. Remove an old Bluetooth record, then reset using the model-specific procedure.
They appear but will not finish connecting Forget or remove the saved AirPods entry and retry pairing. Reset after the fresh pairing attempt fails.
They connect but sound comes from the device Select AirPods in the playback or sound-output menu and raise volume. Reconnect or reset only if they disappear from the output list.
Only one earbud works Reseat both earbuds in the case and confirm that both are charging and detected. Reset and pair again if both charge but one remains absent.
Connection works on one device but not another Pair directly from the second device’s Bluetooth settings. Check that the second device supports the model and current software requirements.
AirPods keep switching away from the expected device Manually select them as the active output and review saved Bluetooth pairings. Forget the unwanted pairing on the host that keeps taking the connection.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

If both AirPods and the case are charged, the host software is current, the correct model-specific pairing and reset procedures have been completed, and a fresh pairing still fails, the remaining cause may require hardware diagnosis. Apple provides support, service, and repair options for AirPods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not pry open the case, replace internal batteries, or attempt an unapproved hardware repair as a Bluetooth fix. The case and earbuds contain small batteries and delicate charging contacts; unsupported work can create a safety risk and may remove the service options available for the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don’t my AirPods appear in the iPhone Bluetooth list?

Charge both earbuds in the case, turn Bluetooth on, open the lid beside the iPhone, and repeat the pairing gesture for your exact model. If an old AirPods entry is present, choose Forget This Device and try again.

Do I need to reset AirPods every time they fail to connect?

No. First check charging, Bluetooth, software, audio output, and a fresh pairing attempt. Reset only after those reversible checks fail.

How do I pair AirPods without the setup animation?

Open Settings > Bluetooth, put the AirPods in model-specific pairing mode, and tap their name under Other Devices. Older cases use a rear button, newer cases use a front tap gesture, and AirPods Max use a headphone control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are AirPods connected but producing no sound?

The connection may have succeeded while another output remains selected. Choose AirPods in the iPhone or iPad playback destination, Mac Control Center > Sound, or the Android or Windows sound settings, then raise the volume.

Can AirPods work with Android or Windows?

Yes. They work as a Bluetooth headset with non-Apple devices, but Siri is unavailable there. Pair them from that device’s Bluetooth settings and select them for audio output and, when needed, the microphone.

Will AirPods automatically connect to all my Apple devices?

Apple says supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account can connect automatically after setup. This does not mean several devices play audio through the AirPods at once; select the active destination.

What does the amber-then-white light mean during a reset?

For older button-equipped cases, holding the setup button until the light flashes amber and then white completes the reset and places the case in a pairing state. Newer cases use a different, model-specific sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact Apple for service?

Request Apple support or service when both earbuds and the case charge, the host software is current, the correct pairing and reset steps are complete, and a fresh pairing still fails. Avoid opening the case or attempting an unapproved battery repair.

The Bottom Line

Start with the simplest causes: charge both AirPods, enable Bluetooth, update the host, and select AirPods as the audio output. Retry pairing before resetting. If a reset is necessary, identify the model first because button cases, newer front-tap cases, and AirPods Max use different controls. A correct reset followed by fresh pairing should be the last software step; persistent failure belongs with Apple support or service.
