To set up AirPods 4 (ANC) with an iPhone, place both earbuds in their open charging case, hold the case beside the iPhone, tap Connect in the setup animation, follow the prompts, and tap Done. If the animation does not appear, open the case, double-tap its front until the light flashes white, then choose the AirPods under Settings > Bluetooth. After pairing, open the AirPods settings page to assign what pressing and holding either stem does.
Confirm that you have the ANC model
Apple sells two products under the AirPods 4 name. This guide concerns AirPods 4 (ANC), the version that supports Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio. The standard AirPods 4 does not have the ANC model’s documented listening-mode controls, so its settings will not match every screen described here.

Check the product name shown during pairing or in Bluetooth settings before troubleshooting a missing noise-control option. A setting that is absent on standard AirPods 4 may be normal rather than a pairing fault. If you bought AirPods 4 without ANC, the regular play, pause, track, and call gestures still apply, but you should not expect the three listening modes in this guide.

- An iPhone with Bluetooth enabled and access to its Home Screen.
- Both AirPods 4 (ANC) earbuds inside their charging case.
- The case open and held close to the iPhone during setup.
- An Apple Account signed in to iCloud if you want automatic setup on supported devices using that same account.
Keep the earbuds in the case for the initial connection. The setup animation is designed to appear when the open case is close to the iPhone. Starting from the Home Screen makes it easier to see the pairing card rather than leaving you buried in another settings page.

Set up AirPods 4 (ANC) with an iPhone
- Start at the iPhone Home Screen.
- Put both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
- Hold the open case next to the iPhone.
- When the setup animation appears, tap Connect.
- Follow the instructions displayed on the iPhone.
- Tap Done when setup finishes.
Apple’s basic instruction is to open the charging case with the AirPods inside and hold it next to the iPhone. Keep the lid open until the setup card has appeared and you have tapped Connect. Moving the case away too soon can make the process look as though nothing happened, even though the earbuds themselves are ready to pair.
Apple says that, when you are signed in to iCloud, AirPods can be set up automatically with supported devices that use the same Apple Account. The first iPhone pairing therefore establishes more than a single Bluetooth connection: it can make the earbuds available to those supported devices without repeating the complete setup process. If another supported device uses a different Apple Account, do not assume it will receive the same automatic setup.
Pair manually when the animation is missing
Use manual Bluetooth pairing if no setup card appears. The case must remain open, with the AirPods inside.

- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Wait for the AirPods to appear in the device list, then tap their name.
The flashing white light indicates that the case has entered pairing mode. If you close the lid before selecting the earbuds, reopen it and repeat the front-of-case double-tap gesture. The important distinction is that this is a double-tap on the case front, not a tap on either stem.
Manual pairing is also the practical fallback when an iPhone is not showing the animated card but Bluetooth is operating normally. Once the AirPods appear in the device list and you select them, wear them and return to Settings to confirm that the AirPods name is shown near the top.
Understand the stem controls
AirPods 4 use presses on the stem rather than taps on the earbud surface. The standard media and call actions are fixed:
| Gesture | Default result |
|---|---|
| Press once | Play or pause audio; answer an incoming call |
| Press twice | Skip to the next track |
| Press three times | Return to the previous track |
| Press and hold | Action chosen separately for the left or right stem on AirPods 4 (ANC) |
Press once, twice, or three times in quick succession as one gesture. The press-and-hold action is the customizable control that determines whether the stem changes listening modes or invokes Siri. The single-, double-, and triple-press actions are not replaced when you customize press and hold, so changing noise control should not alter your normal playback or call habits.

When testing, use a deliberate squeeze of the stem and release between presses. A single press should produce play or pause, two presses should advance to the next track, and three should return to the previous track. Testing each side separately helps reveal whether only one stem has a different press-and-hold assignment.

Assign press-and-hold to each stem
Wear the AirPods and make sure they are connected before changing their controls. The AirPods-specific settings page normally appears near the top of the Settings app when the earbuds are connected.
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap the AirPods name near the top of the screen.
- Find Press and Hold AirPods. Depending on the iPhone software version, the same controls may be grouped under Controls & Gestures.
- Tap Left or Right.
- Choose Listening Mode to cycle through noise-control modes, or choose Siri to assign the voice assistant.
- Repeat the selection for the other stem if you want both sides to behave the same way.
Left and right are configured independently. For example, you can reserve the left stem for listening-mode changes and the right stem for Siri, or assign the same action to both. A useful mixed arrangement is Listening Mode on the side you naturally reach first and Siri on the other side.
If a stem is set to Siri, pressing and holding it will not switch listening modes until you change that stem back to Listening Mode. This explains why a long press can appear to “stop working” for ANC even though the earbuds are connected correctly: the gesture is performing the action currently assigned to that side.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Software versions can group the same choices under slightly different headings. Look for the AirPods name near the top of Settings, then for Press and Hold AirPods or an equivalent Controls & Gestures area. Choose and switch ANC listening modes
AirPods 4 (ANC) has three documented listening modes:
| Mode | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Active Noise Cancellation | Reduces surrounding sound while you listen. |
| Transparency | Lets nearby environmental sound pass through so you can remain aware of your surroundings. |
| Adaptive Audio | Uses an adaptive listening mode that combines the ANC and transparency experience as conditions change. |
If you assigned a stem to Listening Mode, press and hold that stem until you hear the confirmation chime. The AirPods then move through the modes selected for that control. You can choose which modes are included when configuring the listening-mode option; excluding a mode makes the cycle shorter and avoids cycling through a setting you rarely use.
For example, someone who normally wants outside awareness can include Transparency and Adaptive Audio while leaving Active Noise Cancellation out of the stem cycle. Someone who wants a simple on-or-off routine can include only Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency. The choices affect the cycle for that stem; they do not change the fixed single-, double-, or triple-press gestures.
You can also switch modes from an iPhone or iPad without using the stems:

- Choose Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio.
This Control Center route is useful when press-and-hold is assigned to Siri or when you want to change modes silently from the screen. It also provides a direct way to select a mode that you left out of the stem’s shorter cycle.
Use Personalized Volume and Conversation Awareness
Apple also documents Personalized Volume and Conversation Awareness for AirPods 4 (ANC). These are separate from the three manually selected listening modes.
Conversation Awareness responds when the wearer begins speaking: it lowers media volume and enhances nearby voices. That makes a short conversation possible without removing the earbuds or manually pausing playback. Personalized Volume adjusts listening volume based on the conditions Apple describes for the feature, rather than acting as another press-and-hold mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Because these features can change what you hear automatically, do not treat a volume reduction or a shift toward outside sound as proof that ANC has stopped working. First check whether a voice-triggered Conversation Awareness behavior is responsible. Likewise, a volume change associated with Personalized Volume is not evidence that the listening-mode assignment changed.
Pair AirPods 4 with Android and other Bluetooth devices
AirPods 4 can pair with non-Apple Bluetooth devices. Apple says they can be used to listen and talk in that configuration, but Siri is unavailable.
- Leave both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- Open the other device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the AirPods when they appear in the available-device list.
The case-front pairing gesture is the same one used for manual iPhone pairing. Menus on Android phones, Windows PCs, and other Bluetooth hosts use different labels, so look for the device list rather than an Apple-specific setup animation.
Basic audio and microphone use remain available, but Apple does not provide Siri through a non-Apple Bluetooth connection. If Siri is a required part of your control scheme, use an Apple device for the connection and assign press-and-hold to Siri there. Do not interpret the absence of Siri on Android or Windows as a defective earbud; it is a limitation of that connection arrangement.

Do not wait indefinitely for the animation. Keep the AirPods in the open case, double-tap the case front until the light flashes white, then use Settings > Bluetooth to select them. This is Apple’s manual pairing path for AirPods 4.

The AirPods do not appear in Bluetooth
Check the pairing conditions before trying again: both earbuds should be in the case, the lid should be open, and the status light should be flashing white after the front double-tap. If the light is not flashing white, repeat the gesture with the lid open, then return to the Bluetooth device list. Selecting the product name is the final step; there is no need to wait for a separate setup animation once manual pairing is underway.
The AirPods page is not visible in Settings
Wear the earbuds and confirm that they are connected. The AirPods name normally appears near the top of Settings only after a connection is established. If the software groups controls differently, look under Controls & Gestures for the press-and-hold assignments. If you are looking at a standard AirPods 4 pair, ANC-specific entries will not appear.
Pressing and holding does not change noise control
Open the AirPods settings and inspect the assignment for the stem you are pressing. It must be set to Listening Mode; a stem assigned to Siri will invoke Siri instead. Also confirm that the connected product is AirPods 4 (ANC), because standard AirPods 4 does not expose the ANC model’s listening-mode controls.
A listening mode is missing from the cycle
Return to the Press and Hold AirPods setting, choose the relevant side, and review the modes included under Listening Mode. The stem cycles only through the modes selected there. You can still open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, and choose a mode directly. A shorter cycle is intentional when one or more modes have been excluded.
Conversation suddenly lowers your music
Conversation Awareness is designed to lower media volume and enhance nearby voices when you begin speaking. Check that behavior before changing the ANC assignment. The feature is separate from the press-and-hold choice, so changing a stem from Listening Mode to Siri will not by itself explain voice-triggered volume changes.
You are pairing with a non-Apple device and cannot use Siri
This is an expected limitation of that connection. Apple supports listening and talking over Bluetooth on non-Apple devices, but Siri is unavailable there. Use the device’s own voice-assistant controls or reconnect the AirPods to an Apple device when Siri is needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a practical control layout
There is no universally best assignment; choose based on which action you use most often.
- Noise-control priority: assign Listening Mode to the stem you can reach most easily, then include only the modes you actually use in its cycle.
- Siri priority: assign Siri to one stem and use Control Center for occasional mode changes.
- Mixed layout: assign Listening Mode to one side and Siri to the other, keeping the fixed single-, double-, and triple-press media gestures unchanged.
- Screen-first layout: leave both press-and-hold actions on Siri or another preferred action and use Control Center’s touch-and-hold volume menu whenever you need ANC, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio.
After changing an assignment, test the left and right stems separately while audio is playing. A single press should still play or pause, a double press should advance, and a triple press should return to the previous track; only the press-and-hold behavior changes. Then test each included listening mode so you know the confirmation chime and cycle order before relying on the control away from the phone.

How do I make a long press switch between ANC and Transparency?
Wear the connected AirPods, open their settings near the top of Settings, choose Press and Hold AirPods or Controls & Gestures, select Left or Right, and assign Listening Mode. Choose the modes you want included in the cycle.
Why does a long press activate Siri instead of changing noise control?
That stem is assigned to Siri. Change its Press and Hold action to Listening Mode if you want it to cycle Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio.
Can standard AirPods 4 use the ANC controls in this guide?
No. The ANC-specific listening modes documented here apply to AirPods 4 (ANC). Standard AirPods 4 does not expose the same ANC, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio controls.
Can I use AirPods 4 with an Android phone or Windows PC?
Yes. Put the AirPods in their open case, double-tap the case front until the light flashes white, and select them in the device’s Bluetooth list. Apple says listening and talking work, but Siri is unavailable.
Why did my media volume drop when I started talking?
Conversation Awareness can lower media volume and enhance nearby voices when you begin speaking. It is separate from the manually selected listening modes and the press-and-hold assignment.
Can I change listening modes without pressing an AirPods stem?
Yes. On an iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, and choose Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio.
The Bottom Line
Pair AirPods 4 (ANC) from the open case using the iPhone’s Connect card, or use the case-front double-tap and Bluetooth settings when the card is missing. Once connected, assign each stem’s press-and-hold action independently to Listening Mode or Siri, select the modes you want in the cycle, and use Control Center when you prefer an on-screen switch. Remember that the ANC controls belong to AirPods 4 (ANC), while Siri is unavailable when the earbuds are paired to a non-Apple Bluetooth device.
