How to Set Up a YouTube Live Video Playlist on an Old Laptop in India

You can broadcast a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live from an old laptop using OBS Studio’s VLC Video source. First check that your channel can go live and that the laptop and internet connection can handle your chosen settings; then add the playlist in OBS, connect it to YouTube with a stream key, test the preview, and start the broadcast. The setup steps are not specific to India, but your channel’s access and your connection still need to be checked.

What you are setting up

A YouTube playlist is usually a watchlist of videos on the platform. This guide is about a different setup: playing local video files in sequence through an encoder and sending that output as one YouTube Live broadcast. OBS Studio can do this with its VLC Video source. The files should be media you are authorized to broadcast; the setup itself does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material.

YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room, connect OBS using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, check the incoming preview, and then start the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check channel access, laptop, and connection first

Confirm that the channel can go live

YouTube says live-streaming access requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current help page also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so check access well before you plan to broadcast. Availability can depend on your account; confirm it in YouTube Studio rather than assuming access. Details are in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.

Check whether the laptop can run OBS

For Windows, OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its system requirements. These are basic compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that a particular old laptop can encode smoothly. The load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the OBS system requirements, then use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the actual content and settings you plan to use.

Measure upload speed and leave headroom

Run a speed test on the same connection you intend to stream from. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. That total includes the video and audio sent by the encoder, so a speed test result that merely matches the video bitrate is not enough. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the headroom recommendation.

Build the playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match their architectures: if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. If OBS is already open when you install VLC, restart OBS and check the source list again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Open the scene you want to use in OBS. In the Sources box, select the plus button and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.

  3. In the source properties, add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Check the list before continuing; its sequence determines the playback order.

    • 256 GB SSD of storage.
    • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM

  4. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should restart from the beginning after its last file. OBS’s VLC Video source supports multiple files and a looping playlist. For a single file that should repeat, OBS’s Media Source has its own Loop option; a playlist source is unnecessary. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

  5. Make sure the source fits the scene canvas and check that its audio is present in the OBS audio mixer. Play enough of each file to confirm the image and sound work before going live.

Choose conservative output settings

There is no single setting that will suit every old laptop or connection. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations include these video bitrates:

Output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
480p at 30 fps 0.3 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps

These are recommendations, not guarantees of smooth performance on your machine or network. They are video bitrate figures; allow upload headroom for the total outgoing bitrate, including audio. If OBS reports encoder overload or YouTube reports connection problems, lower the resolution or frame rate and simplify the scene, then test again. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Create a stream for an immediate broadcast, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling creates an upcoming watch page and gives you time to share it.

  2. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service if it is available in your version. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not show or share it publicly.

  3. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room, then check the picture, playlist order, and audio.

  4. For a scheduled stream, click Go Live in Live Control Room after checking the preview. For an immediate stream, follow the controls shown for that stream in YouTube Studio. Monitor OBS and YouTube’s stream health while it runs.

  5. When finished, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the channel’s Live tab for the saved stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not leave an old laptop running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos—not a live camera feed—and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

Every slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For India, UPI and cards are accepted. Start with the StreamNeo free trial.
