To loop ambient rain footage on a YouTube live stream, add the video to an encoder such as OBS as a looping media source, connect the encoder to YouTube Live with your stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the broadcast. You can keep a stream running all day, but YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours, and viewer rewind may be limited. If you need a complete replay, make a local recording.

Check that your channel is eligible
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a creator who is at least 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before preparing the broadcast, since eligibility requirements and interface labels can change.

Use footage and audio you have the right to stream
Make sure you have the necessary rights to both the picture and sound in your file. A recording of rain is not automatically free of rights restrictions; music or other audio captured alongside it may have separate rights. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the provider, including music licensing rights. A copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can cause YouTube to terminate an active stream; see YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
How to set up a looping rain video in OBS
- Prepare the source file. Choose a video you have permission to stream. If you want the loop to look continuous, check how its ending joins to its beginning and listen for abrupt changes in rain volume or other sound.
- Create a scene and add the video. In OBS, create a scene, add a Media Source, and select your file. In the source’s properties, enable Loop. OBS documents the Media Source loop option in its Media Sources guide.
- Use a playlist if you want several clips to cycle. Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist, then enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source type. This option suits a collection of rain scenes; one Media Source is simpler when you want the same clip to repeat.
- Preview the loop. Play the scene through the end of the file and check the restart, picture, and audio. For a playlist, also check the transitions between clips. Different brightness or sound levels may make a playlist’s changes noticeable.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create or schedule a stream, connect an encoder, and review its incoming preview.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. The key is a credential that routes your encoder’s feed, so do not share it publicly. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys, URLs, and related options.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the correct rain scene and audio are arriving in the Live Control Room. When the preview is ready, use the Go Live control if YouTube presents it for your stream. YouTube also offers RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows and HLS ingestion; HLS uses specific transport settings and has higher latency than RTMP. For a basic looping rain video, there is no evident reason to select HLS just to repeat the file. Follow the protocol and settings shown for your encoder and stream rather than applying a generic bitrate recipe.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Run a private or unlisted test long enough to observe a full loop and check that audio continues, the picture remains correct, and the network stays stable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the broadcast. If you plan to leave the stream running, keep an eye on the Live Control Room as practical.
Choose stream settings around your source and connection
There is no universal bitrate, resolution, or encoder setting that can be called sufficient without knowing your source file, output configuration, hardware, and available upload speed. Match the output to the media and the settings offered by your encoder and YouTube’s current stream configuration. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate and using a reliable connection. A network interruption can break the broadcast. A wired connection may be worth considering if your current network is unstable, but Ethernet is not a stated YouTube requirement.

Can a YouTube live stream run all day?
The encoder can keep sending a looping source, but an uninterrupted all-day broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local backup. Troubleshooting a looping rain stream
- The video stops at the end. Check the Media Source’s Loop setting. If you are using a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist and confirm VLC is installed.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and current stream key from the Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if you suspect it has been exposed, review YouTube’s stream settings and replace it there before reconnecting the encoder.
- The preview is missing or incorrect. Confirm OBS is sending the scene containing the intended media source, that the file is available to OBS, and that the encoder is connected to the intended YouTube stream. Check the incoming preview before going live.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable. Check connection reliability and leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends. Test the actual setup; a network interruption can break a live stream.
- The broadcast ends after a rights issue. Check for copyright notifications and confirm you hold the necessary rights for both the visual and audio content. YouTube may terminate live streams following a copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast.
- The all-day stream has no complete replay or rewind. This can be a platform duration limitation rather than a looping-source failure. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable; keep a local recording if you need a full copy.
