To livestream a vacation rental walkthrough, first confirm your YouTube channel can go live, then choose the YouTube mobile app for a moving phone tour or a webcam/encoder setup for a fixed or more controlled production. Get permission to film, plan a short route, test the connection and audio, and run an unlisted practice stream before inviting viewers.
1. Check YouTube Live eligibility before you prepare
YouTube’s current live-stream guidance says the streamer must be at least 16, use a verified channel, and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the day of the tour. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance has the current general requirements.

For a phone stream specifically, YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported Android or iOS device. The first mobile stream may also take up to 24 hours to become available. If your channel does not meet the mobile threshold, check YouTube Studio for the requirements that apply to webcam or encoder streaming. YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements are the reference for that route.
2. Choose the streaming method for your tour

For a typical one-person rental tour, the phone route is the simplest if the channel qualifies. Webcam is useful for an introduction or Q&A from one location. Choose an encoder when external equipment or a more deliberate production is worth the additional configuration and testing.

3. Get permission and protect the property’s privacy
Before filming, get permission from the property owner or authorized manager. If anyone is staying there or could appear on camera, postpone the tour or obtain clear permission from everyone who may be shown. Do not assume that people, documents, or details in the background are harmless just because the tour is about the property.
- Check mirrors, windows, television and computer screens, mail, paperwork, family photographs, and views into neighboring properties.
- Keep door codes, lockbox details, keys, security systems, and other access information out of the shot and out of your narration.
- Do not broadcast current guests, neighbors, or identifiable private details.
- Walk the route before going live so you can avoid private areas and decide what features to show.
If the property is listed on Airbnb, its published camera and recording-device policy prohibits hosts from using devices to monitor any part of a home’s interior, even when turned off or disconnected, with specific stated exceptions for certain licensed listings in Japan. It permits certain exterior devices subject to disclosure and applicable rules. That policy concerns devices monitoring a listing; it should not be treated as a universal rule about every authorized one-time tour. Check the platform rules and local law that apply to the property.

4. Plan the walkthrough and prepare the phone
Map a short route
Choose the rooms, amenities, and features viewers need to see, and decide the order before filming. A short route with planned transitions reduces dead air and abrupt camera movements. YouTube advises planning content, checking framing and the background, and testing audio and video before going live. Remember that a live stream does not offer multiple takes: if something goes wrong, pause, explain, and continue or end the stream rather than showing private information while trying to recover.

- Use the rear phone camera when practical; it is usually better for visuals.
- Choose portrait or landscape before starting and keep the orientation consistent.
- Use a tripod or selfie stick where it helps limit shake, especially during room-to-room movement.
- Speak close to the microphone, avoid covering it, and listen for traffic, appliances, wind, or echo.
- An external phone microphone is optional, but may help in a noisy space; check that its connector works with your phone.
YouTube’s mobile filming guidance recommends charging the phone and turning on Do Not Disturb. It gives a broad battery-use estimate of about 1% per minute; actual drain varies with the phone, settings, signal, and battery condition. A power bank is optional for a longer tour.

Check upload capacity and signal
Test upload speed in the actual rooms and along the route; download speed alone does not tell you whether the stream can be sent reliably. Select stream quality and encoding settings that the available upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance provides bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate; there is no single upload-speed figure that fits every setup. For a computer-based setup, use Ethernet if available. Test from the places where you intend to speak and move, since indoor signal can change from room to room.
5. Create the stream and test it privately
Start from the YouTube mobile app
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create, then Live.
- Follow the prompts to create or schedule the stream. Set the title and details, select the audience setting, and choose visibility deliberately.
- Use an Unlisted test event before the public walkthrough. Check the preview and make sure the camera is showing only the intended space.
- When the test is satisfactory, create or schedule the actual event and verify its visibility before starting.
YouTube’s live settings include public, private, and unlisted visibility choices; check the available choices and labels in the app before you begin. Its live-stream tips recommend testing and monitoring the stream’s audio and video.

Set up an encoder
- Enable live streaming for the channel and allow time for first-time activation, which may take up to 24 hours.
- Install compatible streaming software or connect a hardware encoder, then create the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- Start an unlisted test, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check movement, speech, sound levels, and playback on another device if possible.
For resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, follow the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings for the encoding method you use. A setting that works on a strong home connection may fail on a weaker property connection, so test with the actual route and intended quality rather than relying on a generic target.

6. Go live, monitor the tour, and end cleanly
- Before starting, verify the event’s visibility and title, the route, the connection, and the audio. Make one last check for guests and sensitive information in frame.
- Move slowly, pause briefly at each feature, and narrate what viewers should notice rather than swinging the camera quickly between rooms.
- Monitor stream health while you broadcast. A second device or helper can watch chat, provided that doing so does not distract the person holding the camera.
- When the tour is finished, stop the stream in the app or encoder and confirm the event has ended in YouTube Studio. For an encoder stream, YouTube advises stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube.
7. Troubleshoot common walkthrough problems
