You can present authorized, prerecorded speedrun footage as a YouTube Live broadcast by creating a Live Control Room event, sending its stream key from an encoder, and playing the recordings as the encoder’s video source. Before you go live, verify each run’s current leaderboard status and get permission to rebroadcast the actual video. A leaderboard listing or credit alone does not grant that permission.
Decide what the rerun will show
Here, “rerun” means prerecorded gameplay transmitted through a live encoder—not a runner playing live. Choose whether you are scheduling a single event or running a recurring program, then decide how you will supply the video:

- Computer source: Play authorized recordings from the computer used for encoding. Encoder streaming supports gameplay and overlays.
- Console direct stream: Modern consoles can stream directly to YouTube. This is a separate workflow from feeding prerecorded videos through a computer encoder.
- Console-to-computer capture: If your source is console gameplay and you need the computer’s encoder, a capture card may feed that video into the computer. It is optional, not a requirement for every setup.

Before preparing the broadcast, check that your channel is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s age requirement: creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Requirements and controls can change, so check YouTube’s current eligibility guidance in the account you plan to use. Do not rely on older instructions that every channel must enable live streaming exactly 24 hours in advance.

YouTube’s live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A violation can lead to removal or age restriction, and a live restriction may prevent you from using another channel to stream during the restriction. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
Verify each run and secure permission
Check the record in context
“World record” is specific to a game’s leaderboard category and rules, not a permanent label that can safely stand alone. Before selecting a run, check the current board entry and its proof. Record the game, category, displayed time, runner, platform or game version when listed, and the date you checked its status. Follow that board’s rules for timing and proof; categories and verification practices differ by game. Speedrun.com says moderators review submissions and video proof is commonly required. Get permission to use the recording
Ask the runner or other rights holder for explicit permission to rebroadcast the video, and keep a record of the permission and any requested credit. Speedrun.com’s moderation rules state: “Do not copy or reupload a player’s video without permission from the user.” A public leaderboard entry is not blanket permission to retransmit the footage. Speedrun.com’s terms update also explains that users own their run submissions and that prior blanket Creative Commons permission for site content no longer applies to reuse beyond operating the site. For each authorized recording, note the runner, game, category, time, version or platform if available, leaderboard link, and date the record status was checked. Put source credits and run details in the description or an on-screen card. Label the program as a rerun and make clear the performance is prerecorded, not happening live. Recheck the board close to broadcast time because results can change.

Create the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a broadcast or schedule one for later.
- Enter an accurate title and description, choose the privacy setting, and add a thumbnail. Identify the program as a prerecorded rerun and describe the runs precisely.
- For a recurring schedule, treat each scheduled broadcast as its own event. YouTube’s Live API distinguishes the broadcast event from the incoming stream and documents reusing a stream for scheduled broadcasts; only one event can be live at a time. Live Control Room labels can change. If the current interface differs, follow the live setup flow YouTube presents for the channel.
Connect the encoder and check the feed
- In the event’s live setup, locate and copy its stream key.
- In your encoder’s streaming settings, select the YouTube destination and enter the key. The key connects the encoder’s outgoing feed to your YouTube event; treat it like a password. Do not display it on screen, put it in a public description, or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Set the encoder’s video source to the authorized recording or prepared playlist. Check that the correct audio is included, overlays do not cover important gameplay, and transitions do not expose unrelated material.
- Test privately or unlisted before the public event. Confirm the feed reaches YouTube, audio and video are present, credits are readable, and the event is using the intended privacy setting. - When the test looks right, start the encoder and check Live Control Room for the incoming stream and event status. Start the scheduled public broadcast using the controls shown there.
Keep the broadcast clear and compliant
- Do not title or present a rerun in a way that suggests the runner is currently playing.
- Keep the description and any on-screen cards aligned with the current board entry; state the check date for claims that a run is a record.
- Moderate live chat and follow YouTube’s rules throughout the broadcast. YouTube may remove or restrict streams that violate its policies.
- Review YouTube’s current policies and product controls for your specific format. Official guidance on live broadcasts and encoders does not establish that every form of continuous prerecorded looping is permitted or guaranteed to remain live indefinitely.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The channel cannot start a live broadcast: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-streaming restriction applies. Resolve eligibility issues in YouTube Studio before scheduling.
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Confirm the encoder is using the stream key for the intended event and that the encoder has been started. If needed, copy the key again from Live Control Room and update the encoder privately; never reveal the key while troubleshooting on stream.
- The wrong video or no audio appears: Check the selected encoder source and its audio input, then repeat a private or unlisted test before going public.
- The recording’s “record” status is disputed or outdated: Recheck the game’s current category board, rules, and proof. Correct the title, description, or on-screen card rather than presenting an unverified claim as current.
- A rights holder objects to the footage: Stop using the recording unless you have permission that covers the rebroadcast. Attribution does not replace permission.
- The event is live when you expected a different scheduled event: Check which broadcast is active in Live Control Room. YouTube’s documented API workflow allows only one event to be live at a time.
