How to Set Up a YouTube Live Rerun of Esports Tournament VODs

You can rerun an esports tournament VOD on YouTube Live by scheduling a broadcast in Live Control Room, sending the authorized recording through an encoder with the matching stream key, checking YouTube’s preview, and then going live. The essential first step is rights clearance: a VOD being publicly viewable does not mean you may rebroadcast it. Confirm permission for the specific recording, live transmission, channel and territory, and any archive before setting up the stream.

Get permission for the exact VOD before streaming

An esports broadcast can contain several separately controlled elements: game footage, tournament camera work, caster commentary, music, graphics, and sponsor material. Permission to watch or link to a public VOD does not, by itself, establish permission to transmit it again as a live stream or keep the resulting archive available.

Identify the event and VOD owner, then check the tournament operator’s current broadcast rules and the game publisher’s current streaming policy. Ask the relevant rights holder whether permission covers all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A new live transmission of the existing recording, rather than only access to the original VOD.
  • Your specific YouTube channel and the territories where viewers may watch.
  • Any monetization, attribution, delay, or other event-specific conditions.
  • The replay or video-on-demand archive after the live event ends.
  • Any test transmission you plan to make before the scheduled broadcast.

If the rights owner uses YouTube Content ID, ask it to add your channel to its allowlist before the event. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder to replace the stream, a warning, or an interruption or termination if the matched content remains. A license alone may not prevent that automated handling; the allowlist request is a separate practical step. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Policies are specific to the game and event

For example, Valve’s Dota 2 Community Stream Policy says community streams must be based on DotaTV and material the creator made or licensed, subject to event requirements. It also says operator-provided camera work and broadcast audio require operator authorization, even if available through DotaTV. That is a Dota 2-specific policy, not a general rule for every esport. Check the current policy and event rules directly: Dota 2 Community Stream Policy.

SEGA’s gameplay-video guidance is another example of publisher-specific terms: it addresses third-party intellectual property and says product-specific policies may take priority. Its general guidance has stated conditions for individual users, so it should not be assumed to cover tournament operators or other publishers. Review the relevant current guidance: SEGA gameplay video guidelines.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and encoder

YouTube’s Live Control Room workflow lets you create or schedule the event, while an encoder sends the recording’s audio and video to that event. In YouTube’s terminology, the broadcast is the event page and the stream carries the feed and its settings. A stream configuration can be reused for broadcasts at different times, but each rerun still needs the correct event details and source feed. Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the source. Confirm that the file is the VOD you have permission to use, and decide the playback order and whether the video should repeat. Check its audio and video before the event.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the stream workflow and create the event. Enter the title and description, set privacy, and add a thumbnail if wanted. If the rerun is for a later time, schedule it.
  3. Copy the stream key. Copy the key shown for the event or selected stream configuration into the encoder. Verify that the key and the encoder’s output configuration correspond to the intended YouTube stream. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
  4. Configure file playback in the encoder. Select the authorized VOD as the source and set its playback or looping behavior. The reviewed YouTube workflow does not require a particular encoder product or computer, and it does not establish one universal encoder configuration for every file and setup. Use the encoder’s current instructions and match its output to the stream configuration YouTube presents.
  5. Start the encoder, then inspect YouTube’s preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check that the intended video and audio appear in the preview before using the Live Control Room go-live action.
  6. Monitor the event. Keep an operator available to watch the preview and live status. If the content is challenged or YouTube interrupts the feed, stop sending the content and follow up with the rights holder and YouTube rather than trying to evade the interruption.

Schedule and preflight the rerun

Before viewers arrive, verify the event information and the entire signal path. Use a private or unlisted technical check when appropriate and consistent with the license; YouTube’s guide recommends private or unlisted settings when you are not actually streaming. A test is still a transmission, so make sure your permission covers it.

End the stream and check the archive

When the rerun is over, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending content. Review the resulting archive and any copyright notices in YouTube Studio. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the live stream completes if the creator chooses to archive it. Before promoting, retaining, or making the replay available on demand, confirm that your permission covers that use too. YouTube’s live guide calls for rights to the live stream, rebroadcast, and audio/video on demand.
