You can send an encoder’s output from a Windows VPS to YouTube Live by enabling live streaming on your channel, creating a stream in YouTube Studio, then entering the current server URL and stream key in your encoder. The VPS can host the encoder remotely, but remote desktop access alone does not guarantee that an encoder will survive a disconnect or restart. Confirm your provider’s Windows image, session behavior, recovery options, and sustained outbound-transfer terms before relying on it unattended.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the activation and stream-creation flow.
- A Windows VPS with remote administration, an encoder, the media or live input you intend to send, and enough capacity for that actual workload.
- The current stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: enter it only in your encoder and do not expose it in screenshots or public text.
This procedure explains the YouTube connection and the checks to make with your VPS provider. It does not establish a minimum VPS specification or guarantee uninterrupted operation for a particular provider or encoder.
1. Enable streaming and create a YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming for the channel in YouTube. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before expecting to go live.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream, or use the Manage tab to schedule one.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy the current server URL and stream key. Do not reuse an old or memorized ingest address: use the value displayed for this stream.

2. Choose and access a Windows VPS
Before purchasing or relying on a host, ask the provider about the exact Windows image and edition, licensing, how remote access is enabled, and what account and security controls are available. Microsoft’s remote-access guidance for Windows Pro is not a deployment guide for every Windows Server or VPS image, so confirm the rule for the image your provider supplies.

Check the service terms that affect a continuous stream
- Whether a remote desktop disconnect, sign-out, or session timeout affects applications running in that session.
- Whether the provider reboots hosts for maintenance, how those events are communicated, and what recovery or startup options are available.
- CPU allocation, memory, disk, host location, and sustained outbound traffic limits or charges.
- Windows licensing, backup options, and how you can regain access if the encoder or host stops responding.
Microsoft’s VM sizing guidance is workload-dependent and concerns Remote Desktop session hosts; it is not a sizing benchmark for OBS or another streaming encoder. Choose capacity based on the source resolution, frame rate, codec, number of simultaneous streams, and available network capacity, then validate the workload on the chosen plan. Do not treat a generic CPU or memory figure as proof that the VPS can encode your stream.
3. Install an encoder and enter YouTube’s connection details
An encoder packages your media or live input for YouTube. Install an encoder of your choice on the VPS; YouTube’s encoder guidance describes installing an encoder and entering the stream URL and key in its streaming settings. If you use OBS Studio, consult its current official documentation for installation and Windows-specific operation; the YouTube connection steps below apply to the values supplied by YouTube, not to a particular encoder interface.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream settings.
- Choose the RTMPS server option if it is offered. If the URL is hidden, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL.
- In your encoder’s streaming settings, select YouTube RTMPS when available, then enter the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Save the settings without sharing the key, and start the encoder when you are ready to check the incoming stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its documentation says the encrypted connection uses TLS and port 443; Google’s developer documentation states, “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” An encoder implementation must also handle the required TLS hostname authentication (SNI). 4. Set encoder output and verify it in YouTube
Match the output to the source and the capacity you have available. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists these constraints and recommendations; they describe stream output, not VPS CPU or bandwidth requirements.

Start the encoder and watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health feedback in Live Control Room. Confirm that the incoming picture and sound are correct before treating the setup as ready for unattended use. The settings reference is YouTube’s guidance for live encoder settings.
5. Test recovery before leaving it unattended
A remote desktop is an administration method, not an uptime mechanism. The official remote-access and general VM-sizing guidance does not establish whether a particular encoder process continues after an RDP disconnect or sign-out, nor does it prescribe a verified auto-start or auto-restart setup for a given VPS image. Confirm those details with the provider and the encoder’s documentation.

- While you can still access the VPS, rehearse disconnecting the remote session without signing out. Reconnect and check whether the encoder is still running and YouTube is still receiving the stream.
- Test the recovery path you plan to use after a host reboot or encoder crash. Confirm whether the Windows image, account, and encoder can start unattended in the way your configuration requires.
- Check that YouTube receives the stream again after a deliberate stop and restart, and that the correct stream key and output settings remain configured.
- Review the provider’s maintenance and reboot policy, outbound-transfer limits, and recovery support before depending on the host for a long broadcast.
Do not assume that closing Remote Desktop, minimizing a window, or leaving an encoder open makes the stream recover automatically. The exact behavior depends on the Windows image, session policy, encoder, and VPS provider.

YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule does not promise one automatically archived video for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If a single archive is essential, plan the broadcast duration accordingly and check YouTube’s current guidance for any retention or segmentation method you intend to use.

Troubleshooting a Windows VPS stream
