Connect the modem or gateway by Ethernet to the Wi‑Fi 7 router’s Internet/WAN port, then choose the correct operating mode: router mode when the Wi‑Fi 7 router should handle routing, or access-point (AP) mode when an ISP gateway must continue routing. Add the existing mesh only through a topology its manufacturer supports. A shared Wi‑Fi name alone does not combine two systems into one mesh.

First identify what your existing box does

The setup depends on whether the ISP-supplied device is a modem only or a gateway that combines a modem, router and Wi‑Fi access point. Read its label and administration page, or check the ISP’s model documentation. Look for routing, DHCP, NAT and Wi‑Fi settings. Record the exact model and hardware revision of the modem or gateway, the Wi‑Fi 7 router and every mesh node before changing anything.

Modem only: let the Wi‑Fi 7 router route

A modem-only device normally has one Ethernet handoff and no home-network routing or Wi‑Fi functions. Connect that Ethernet port to the Wi‑Fi 7 router’s Internet or WAN port and select router mode in the router’s app or web interface. The Wi‑Fi 7 router then supplies the local IP addresses, firewall and wireless network.

Gateway with bridge mode: bridge the gateway, use router mode

When the ISP gateway supports bridge mode, enable it according to the gateway and ISP instructions, then operate the Wi‑Fi 7 router in router mode. Bridging passes the internet connection through while allowing the new router to retain its routing features. Bridge-mode menus, reboot requirements and whether telephone or television services continue to work vary by ISP and gateway model, so use that provider’s procedure rather than a generic sequence.

Gateway without bridge mode: use AP mode as the fallback

If the gateway cannot be bridged, leave it as the router and configure the Wi‑Fi 7 device as an access point. Turn off the gateway’s Wi‑Fi so nearby clients do not choose between two unrelated wireless networks. AP mode avoids adding a second routing layer, but commonly removes or changes router features. NETGEAR documents guest networking, website blocking, VPN service and remote management as examples that may be unavailable in AP mode; the exact list depends on the Wi‑Fi 7 model.

In a documented wired AP topology, the Wi‑Fi 7 unit’s Internet port connects to a LAN port on the existing gateway or modem-router, and AP mode is selected in the router/AP settings. The unit can receive a dynamic address from the existing router. A fixed address is not recommended for people without advanced networking experience in the cited NETGEAR Orbi manual.

Existing device Wi‑Fi 7 operating mode Who routes Main trade-off
Modem only Router mode Wi‑Fi 7 router Clean handoff; the router becomes the central network controller.
Gateway with supported bridge mode Router mode after bridging Wi‑Fi 7 router Bridge behavior and ISP services are model-specific.
Gateway with no bridge mode AP mode ISP gateway Some router features can be disabled; gateway Wi‑Fi should be off.

Check mesh compatibility before rewiring

Wi‑Fi 7 does not make unrelated mesh products interoperable. A mesh is a managed system, not simply several access points using the same SSID. Compatibility depends on the vendor ecosystem, exact models, firmware, supported operating modes, wired backhaul and features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO).

ASUS AiMesh

ASUS says existing AiMesh routers can mesh with Wi‑Fi 7 routers. Its guidance has an important mixed-generation limitation: when MLO is enabled on a Wi‑Fi 7 primary router, an AiMesh node without MLO will not broadcast 6 GHz. For a mixed node set, ASUS advises disabling MLO and making the highest-specification AiMesh device the main router. Treat that as ASUS-specific behavior, not a rule for every manufacturer.

TP-Link Deco

Deco systems support router and AP modes alongside an existing router. In Deco router mode, only the main Deco should connect directly to the existing router; connecting multiple Decos directly can create a network loop. In AP mode, multiple Decos may connect directly to the upstream router. The main Deco still must have a wired connection to a modem, router or internet connection. Deco does not operate as a wireless repeater of the existing router.

Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi

Google warns that wireless bridges and mesh devices used to extend an existing Wi‑Fi network may not work with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi. Whether a particular device works depends on the device and the way it extends the network. Do not assume that an existing Google mesh can be adopted by a different Wi‑Fi 7 router.

What a shared SSID can and cannot do

Giving the gateway and Wi‑Fi 7 router the same network name and password does not create one coordinated mesh. Clients may associate with either radio, roaming decisions are unmanaged, and troubleshooting becomes ambiguous. Disable the old gateway radios when the new router or mesh is intended to provide Wi‑Fi. A different brand’s nodes should be treated as a separate access-point network unless the manufacturers explicitly document coordinated operation.

Prepare the hardware and settings

  • Write down the modem or gateway model, Wi‑Fi 7 router model, mesh model and node count.
  • Confirm whether the ISP device is modem-only, bridge-capable or gateway-only.
  • Check the Wi‑Fi 7 router’s current firmware and the mesh vendor’s supported firmware and operating modes.
  • Identify the Ethernet port labeled Internet, WAN or 2.5G/10G WAN on the Wi‑Fi 7 router, and the LAN port on the modem or gateway.
  • Have a suitable Ethernet cable available. The cable must reach between the devices; the correct speed depends on the internet service and the ports on both ends.
  • Export or note any existing Wi‑Fi names, passwords, reservations and port-forwarding rules you will need to recreate.
  • Decide in advance whether the Wi‑Fi 7 router, the ISP gateway or a supported mesh main unit will provide DHCP and routing. Only one device should normally perform those jobs in the chosen topology.

Set up the Wi‑Fi 7 router step by step

  1. Choose the topology. Use modem-only-to-router mode, bridged-gateway-to-router mode, or gateway-to-AP mode from the earlier table. If you cannot confirm bridge support, do not assume it exists; check the ISP gateway instructions.
  2. Apply bridge settings if applicable. Sign in to the gateway, enable its documented bridge mode and complete any required reboot. Bridge-mode labels and service limitations differ by provider. If bridge mode is unavailable, leave routing enabled and plan to use AP mode on the Wi‑Fi 7 unit.
  3. Power down as directed by the router manual. Some vendors require the modem or gateway and router to be off while cables are moved. Follow the exact model’s boot sequence rather than relying on a universal delay.
  4. Connect Ethernet. For a modem or bridged gateway, connect its Ethernet/LAN handoff to the Wi‑Fi 7 router’s Internet/WAN port. For wired AP mode, connect a LAN port on the existing gateway to the Wi‑Fi 7 device’s documented Internet port, as specified in the NETGEAR Orbi manual.
  5. Start the upstream device, then the Wi‑Fi 7 router. Wait for the modem or gateway to show its normal online state before starting the new router if the vendor instructs that order.
  6. Open the router app or web interface. Select router mode for a modem-only or bridged connection. Select AP or access-point mode when the gateway remains the router. Do not select AP mode merely because the device is new; it is a consequence of leaving an upstream gateway in charge.
  7. Complete the internet setup. Follow the model’s prompts for the ISP connection, administrator password, time zone and wireless configuration. Use the exact WAN port and connection type shown by the product documentation.
  8. Configure Wi‑Fi. Set the network name and password, then decide whether to enable MLO and 6 GHz after checking the mesh node capabilities. If a mixed ASUS AiMesh installation includes a node without MLO, disable MLO to preserve the documented 6 GHz behavior.
  9. Disable conflicting radios. When the Wi‑Fi 7 router or its supported mesh will provide wireless coverage, turn off Wi‑Fi on the old gateway. Do not leave both networks broadcasting under the same name and expect mesh roaming.
  10. Save the configuration and confirm the routing owner. In router mode, the Wi‑Fi 7 router should show the internet connection and provide local addresses. In AP mode, the gateway should continue to provide those functions and the Wi‑Fi 7 unit should appear as an access point.

Add the existing mesh after the new router is online

Do not add mesh nodes until a device connected directly to the new Wi‑Fi 7 network can reach the internet. Then use the ecosystem-specific path below. Keep the main mesh unit’s wired connection and direct-connection limits in mind.

If the mesh is part of the same supported ecosystem

Update firmware as the manufacturer requires, add the Wi‑Fi 7 router as the primary unit or node in the vendor app, and assign the highest-specification supported unit the primary role when the vendor says to do so. For ASUS AiMesh, check the MLO setting before adding older nodes. A non-MLO node paired with an MLO-enabled Wi‑Fi 7 primary will not broadcast 6 GHz under ASUS’s documented behavior.

If the mesh is TP-Link Deco

Choose Deco router mode only when the main Deco is the single Deco connected directly to the upstream router. Wire additional Decos according to the topology that avoids a loop. Choose Deco AP mode when the existing router remains in charge; multiple Decos may then connect directly, but the main Deco must still be wired. Do not try to make Deco repeat the existing router wirelessly.

If the mesh is Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi

Check the exact device and extension method before connecting it to the Wi‑Fi 7 network. Google’s compatibility warning means a wireless bridge or another mesh extender may fail even if it can see the Wi‑Fi network. If compatibility is not documented, use the Wi‑Fi 7 system alone or run the older system as a separately managed network rather than promising one mesh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the brands are different

Use separate access points only when you can accept separate management and potentially imperfect roaming. Give the systems distinct SSIDs while troubleshooting. A wired backhaul to the Wi‑Fi 7 router or gateway is generally easier to reason about than a wireless extension, but the exact support still belongs to the mesh vendor.

Configure MLO, 6 GHz and backhaul deliberately

MLO can allow compatible Wi‑Fi 7 clients and access points to use more than one link, but the feature is not automatically shared by older nodes. Check each node’s MLO support and the vendor’s mixed-generation guidance before enabling it. ASUS’s AiMesh warning is a concrete example of how an MLO setting can affect 6 GHz on an older node.

Decide whether the mesh uses wired or wireless backhaul. Wired backhaul requires Ethernet between the appropriate nodes and the router or switch; wireless backhaul consumes radio capacity and is constrained by placement, walls and the capabilities of every participating node. Do not infer backhaul support from the Wi‑Fi 7 label alone.

Keep one device responsible for address assignment and routing. A Wi‑Fi 7 router behind an unbridged gateway can create double NAT if both devices route. AP mode is the documented way to leave routing on the gateway, while bridge mode is the documented way to move routing to the Wi‑Fi 7 router when the gateway supports it.

Verify the finished network

  1. Connect a phone or computer to the Wi‑Fi 7 SSID and confirm internet access.
  2. Open the router’s status page and note whether it is in router or AP mode, which device supplied its address and whether the WAN link is up.
  3. Walk through the areas covered by the mesh and check that each node is online in its vendor app.
  4. Test a wired client, a wireless client and a local device such as a printer or storage server if you use one.
  5. Check that the old gateway’s Wi‑Fi is off when the new system is intended to provide all wireless service.
  6. Test 6 GHz and MLO only with clients and nodes that support them; an older device may remain on 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz by design.
  7. Recheck the mesh topology for accidental extra direct connections, especially when Deco is operating in router mode.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No internet after moving the cable

Verify that the cable runs from the modem or gateway LAN handoff to the Wi‑Fi 7 router’s Internet/WAN port, not to one of its LAN ports. Confirm the upstream device has completed its normal online startup, then follow the router vendor’s reboot sequence. If the gateway was meant to be bridged, confirm that bridge mode actually applied after its reboot.

Internet works but some apps or inbound services fail

Check whether both the ISP gateway and Wi‑Fi 7 router are routing. If bridge mode is supported, use it and router mode on the Wi‑Fi 7 unit. If bridge mode is unavailable, use AP mode and accept the feature limitations documented for that model. Port forwarding, VPN service and remote-management behavior can change when AP mode is selected.

Devices keep switching between networks

Turn off the gateway’s Wi‑Fi, or give the separately managed system a distinct SSID while you decide which network should serve each area. Matching names do not provide coordinated roaming.

A mesh node will not join

Check that the node belongs to the same supported ecosystem, that firmware versions are supported and that the selected router/AP mode is valid. For ASUS AiMesh, review MLO and 6 GHz settings when an older node is involved. For Google systems, verify that the extension method is supported rather than assuming every wireless bridge works.

The network becomes unstable after wiring several mesh units

Remove extra direct connections and return to the vendor’s documented topology. In Deco router mode, only the main Deco should connect directly to the existing router; multiple direct connections can form a loop. AP mode has different connection rules.

Choose among keeping, replacing or separating the mesh

Approach Use it when What to verify Principal risk
Keep the existing mesh with the Wi‑Fi 7 router The same ecosystem explicitly supports the models and firmware. Primary-router role, MLO/6 GHz behavior, node limits and backhaul. Older nodes may lose a band or feature, as in ASUS’s documented MLO case.
Replace the old mesh with Wi‑Fi 7 nodes You want one vendor-controlled system and the existing nodes are unsupported. Coverage, wired ports, firmware support and ISP topology. Up-front equipment and reconfiguration work.
Run the old system in AP mode or separately It cannot join the Wi‑Fi 7 ecosystem but its coverage remains useful. One routing owner, distinct management and wired connections. Roaming and controls may not be unified.
Use the Wi‑Fi 7 router alone Its coverage is sufficient or compatibility is uncertain. Placement, wired backhaul options and dead zones. Remote areas may need additional supported access points.

Documentation and firmware caveats

Setup labels and capabilities change with firmware, hardware revisions and ISP policies. NETGEAR support pages used for these operating-mode recommendations show updates in July and October 2025. TP-Link’s Deco setup guide shows an April 17, 2026 update. The cited ASUS, Google and NETGEAR manual pages do not have a verified publication date in the available material.
