To whitelist players on a RimWorld Together server, first confirm that your installed server still uses the whitelist system. In versions that support it, enable UseWhitelist in /Configs/WhitelistConfig.json, restart the server, have each permitted player join once, find that player with deeplist, and add the displayed Player ID or UID with whitelistadd [Player ID]. Use whitelist to review entries and whitelistremove [Player ID] to revoke access.
That procedure is version-sensitive. Release notes for version 26.7.25.1 say the mod’s whitelist system was replaced by a password system, while the release list identifies version 26.10.4.1 as released on October 4, 2026. A file-and-command guide can therefore be correct for one server binary and wrong for another. Check your installed version and its expected access-control method before changing files.

What you need before changing access control
Whitelist administration requires access to the server’s configuration files or its hosting control panel, plus access to the server console. The exact workflow differs between a self-hosted installation and a managed server, but the identity steps are the same whenever the whitelist feature exists.
Confirm the server version first
Do not assume that a current-looking tutorial matches your executable. The documented change in version 26.7.25.1 replaced the whitelist system with a password system. If your binary uses that password model, editing WhitelistConfig.json or entering whitelist commands may do nothing because the feature is no longer the active access-control mechanism.

The release list shows 26.10.4.1 released on 2026-10-04. That date does not by itself prove which access-control implementation your installation uses; the installed binary and its accompanying documentation are what matter. Record the exact version before troubleshooting so you can compare instructions against the right release.
Decide whether you control the files
- Self-hosted executable: you can edit the server’s Config directory, restart the executable, and use its console directly.
- Container deployment: configuration is stored in the host directory mounted into the container, and restarts are controlled through Docker or your container manager.
- Managed hosting: the provider may expose file and console functions through a control panel. You need enough access to edit the configuration, restart the server, and issue the identity commands.
Keep the player identifier private
The identifier shown for a player is used to grant or revoke access. The official documentation warns that a UID is sensitive and should not be shared. Treat it like an access-control credential: copy it only into the server console or configuration workflow, avoid posting it in public chat, and remove it from screenshots and support requests.
Self-host a server before configuring the whitelist
If you are starting from an empty machine, the official server guide’s sequence is straightforward: download the server files from GitHub, extract them, launch the executable, and connect locally at 127.0.0.1 on port 25555 for initial setup. Create the world first. The configuration files are placed in the server’s Config directory after the world has been created.

- Download the server package that matches the RimWorld Together release you intend to run.
- Extract the package into a dedicated server directory with write permission. Keeping the files together makes the Config directory and future backups easier to identify.
- Launch the supplied server executable and wait for it to finish its startup sequence.
- Connect from the local machine to
127.0.0.1:25555. This local connection is the documented path for initial setup. - Create the game world. Only after the world exists should you look for the generated configuration files in the server’s Config directory.
If the executable starts but the local connection fails, verify that you used port 25555 and that the server process is still running. Do not start editing files that have not yet been generated; the documented configuration path depends on completing world creation.

Container deployment with Docker
The official repository provides a container image. Its example command creates an RWTData directory on the host, mounts it at /Data in the container, and publishes the game port:
docker run -it --rm -v './RWTData:/Data' -p 25555:25555 ghcr.io/rimworld-together/rimworld-together:latest
Run that command from the directory where you want the host-side RWTData directory to live. The volume mapping is the important part for configuration work: files written under the container’s /Data path are represented in the host’s RWTData directory. The published port maps server port 25555 to the same port on the host, so local and remote clients use the server’s exposed address and that port.
The example uses the latest image tag. Because access-control behavior is version-sensitive, pinning and documenting the image version used by your server is safer than assuming that a later pull retains the same whitelist behavior. Before applying file-based instructions to a container, inspect the version represented by the image you actually run.
Enable the whitelist in WhitelistConfig.json
Use this section only when your installed server documents a whitelist workflow. In a self-hosted installation, open /Configs/WhitelistConfig.json, or the equivalent Config directory beneath your server data location. In a managed installation, use the provider’s file manager to locate the same configuration file if the panel exposes it.

Edit the exact setting
- Stop or prepare to restart the server according to your hosting interface. Avoid editing while another process is simultaneously rewriting the file.
- Open
WhitelistConfig.jsonin a text editor that preserves JSON syntax. - Set the key
UseWhitelistto the Boolean valuetrue. Keep the capitalization exact;usewhitelist,UsewhiteList, or a quoted string such as"true"is not the documented setting. - Save the file without adding comments or trailing characters that would make the JSON invalid.
- Restart the server so it reloads the configuration.
When the whitelist workflow is active, the hosted documentation states that only whitelisted players can join after the setting is enabled. A restart is part of the procedure: leaving the process running after saving the file can leave the previous access policy in memory.
What to do if the file is missing
A missing file is not proof that you should create one manually. First confirm that the world was created and that you are looking in the active data directory rather than an old extraction or an unmounted container path. Then check the server version. If the binary uses password access instead of whitelist access, the file may be absent because it is no longer the relevant configuration.
Add a player to the whitelist
The documented workflow requires the player to join the server at least once before you add them. This first connection gives the server an identity record that can be displayed by the console.
Have the player connect once
- Leave the whitelist disabled while performing the initial identity discovery, or use the access method supported by your version.
- Ask the intended player to connect to the server once.
- Wait until the server has registered the connection, then open the server console.
If the player has never connected, deeplist may not return an entry for them. Do not substitute a display name, Steam name, or an ID copied from a different server; use the identifier shown by the server instance you are administering.

Find the Player ID or UID with deeplist
- Run
deeplistin the server console. - Locate the intended player in the output.
- Copy the Player ID or UID exactly as displayed by your version. Some versions label the value as a Player ID, while others present it as a UID.
- Check capitalization, punctuation, and every character before issuing the add command.
The label can differ between releases, which explains why one administrator may call the value a Player ID while another calls it a UID. The important value is the identifier returned for that player by deeplist on your server.
Issue whitelistadd
Enter the command using the identifier you copied:
whitelistadd [Player ID]
Replace the bracketed placeholder with the actual Player ID or UID; do not enter the square brackets unless your server’s console syntax specifically requires them. Keep the identifier’s original capitalization and punctuation. If the command is accepted, use the review command in the next section rather than assuming that a name appearing in the console means the entry was saved.
Review and revoke whitelist entries
Display the current whitelist
Run:
whitelist
This displays the current whitelist. Compare the returned identifier with the value from deeplist rather than relying on a similar-looking player name. This check catches copy errors before the player attempts to reconnect.
Recommended Free Tools
Remove a player
To revoke access, run:
whitelistremove [Player ID]
Again, replace the placeholder with the exact identifier. After removal, run whitelist to confirm that the entry is gone. If the player is already connected, the command’s effect on that existing session may depend on the server version; test the intended policy by having the account reconnect after you verify the list.
Best Value
Keep an administrative record
Store a private record of which trusted person owns each identifier, but do not publish the raw UID. Record the server version and the date of the change alongside your internal notes. This makes later troubleshooting possible when a release changes the identifier label or access-control implementation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the access policy after a restart
Testing should cover both an allowed account and an account that is not listed. Perform the test only after the configuration change and restart have completed.
- Run
whitelistand confirm that the intended permitted identifier appears. - Have the permitted player connect. Record whether the connection succeeds.
- Use a separate, unlisted account for a controlled negative test. Do not remove a real player from a live server merely to test rejection.
- Confirm that the unlisted account is refused when whitelist enforcement is active.
- If either result is unexpected, stop changing entries and work through the version and path checks below.
A positive test alone can be misleading if the server is still running with its previous configuration or if a password mode is active. The negative test verifies that the access rule is actually being enforced.

The file exists, but players outside the list can still join
- Check that the key is spelled exactly
UseWhitelistand has the Boolean valuetrue, not text. - Confirm that you edited the Config directory belonging to the running server, not a second installation or an unused host directory.
- Restart the server after saving. A live process may still be using its previous configuration.
- Run
whitelistand perform a controlled test with an unlisted account. - Verify the server version. If it expects a password because of the 26.7.25.1-era system change, the whitelist file is not the active gate.
WhitelistConfig.json is not present
- Complete world creation if this is a new self-hosted installation; the documented Config files appear after that setup stage.
- For Docker, inspect the host directory mounted to
/Dataand make sure you are using the sameRWTDatapath as the running container. - For managed hosting, ask the provider whether file access is enabled and where the active configuration directory is located.
- Check the installed version before creating a new file. A password-based release may not use this file.
deeplist does not show the player
- Have the player join at least once on this server.
- Wait for the connection to be registered, then run
deeplistagain. - Make sure you are viewing the console for the correct world and server process.
- Copy the identifier from the current output, not from an old note or another installation.
whitelistadd reports an error or has no visible effect
- Check that you used the command supported by your version and that the identifier is the Player ID or UID returned by
deeplist. - Remove the square brackets from the command if you left the documentation placeholder unchanged.
- Preserve capitalization and punctuation exactly.
- Run
whitelistimmediately afterward to see whether the entry was recorded. - If the command is unknown, revisit the version check instead of repeatedly re-entering it; a password-based implementation may not expose whitelist commands.
A previously allowed player is denied
- Run
whitelistand compare the stored identifier character by character with the value returned bydeeplist. - Check whether the player is connecting to the same server address, port, and world that you configured.
- Confirm that a restart did not load a different configuration directory.
- Re-add the current identifier only after verifying the version and active file path.
Self-hosting versus managed RimWorld Together hosting
Both models can support controlled access, but they place responsibility in different places. The hosted documentation demonstrates a control-panel workflow; it does not establish a standard price or a universal set of provider features.
| Decision point | Self-hosted executable or container | Managed RimWorld Together server |
|---|---|---|
| File access | You locate and edit the Config directory directly, or the host directory mounted into Docker. | You use whatever file manager or configuration editor the provider exposes. |
| Console access | The local executable console or container logs/console are under your control. | Console commands depend on the provider’s control panel. |
| Restart control | You decide when to restart the executable or container after changing UseWhitelist. |
The panel supplies the restart action and may impose its own maintenance process. |
| Docker or executable support | You choose between the official executable files and the official container image. | The provider decides which server packaging and image versions are available. |
| Backups | You are responsible for backing up the server data and configuration, including the whitelist file. | Backup scope and restore controls depend on the provider’s plan and panel. |
| Version visibility | You can inspect the executable or image tag and decide when to update. | You must check which binary is deployed and how the provider communicates updates. |
| Cost information established here | Not stated. | Not stated by the hosted documentation. |
Choose self-hosting when direct file, console, restart, and update control matter more than convenience. Choose managed hosting when you do not want to operate those files and consoles yourself, but confirm that the provider exposes the version and access-control functions you need.
For a managed RimWorld Together server, Godlike.Host provides a Pterodactyl-based game panel with SFTP/FTP access, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket. RimWorld Together’s code is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, a NonCommercial licence (github.com/RimWorld-Together/Rimworld-Together, 10 Oct 2026).
Operational checklist
- Record the installed server version before following a whitelist guide.
- Determine whether the binary expects whitelist entries or a password.
- Identify the active Config directory or mounted data directory.
- Back up the configuration before editing it.
- Use the exact key
UseWhitelistand the Boolean valuetrue. - Restart after saving the configuration.
- Have each permitted player join once before using
deeplist. - Copy the Player ID or UID exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Use
whitelistadd, then verify withwhitelist. - Use
whitelistremovefor revocation and verify the result. - Keep UIDs private.
- Test one permitted and one unlisted account after the restart.
Command reference
| Command | Purpose | Required input |
|---|---|---|
deeplist |
Lists players known to the server so you can identify an account that has joined. | No argument. |
whitelistadd [Player ID] |
Adds a player to the whitelist when that system is supported. | The exact Player ID or UID returned for the player. |
whitelist |
Displays current whitelist entries. | No argument. |
whitelistremove [Player ID] |
Removes a player from the whitelist. | The exact identifier used by the existing entry. |
If any of these commands is unavailable, treat that as a version signal. Reconfirm whether your server uses the documented whitelist workflow or the password system described in the 26.7.25.1 release notes before making further changes.
