How to Set Up a VPS for 24/7 YouTube Streaming with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a Linux VPS by sending a media file through FFmpeg to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then supervising FFmpeg with a service manager such as systemd. The VPS keeps your computer and home connection out of the streaming path, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service: the file, server, network, credentials, and YouTube stream health must all remain in order.

What you need before starting

  • A Linux VPS with enough sustained CPU capacity for the video processing you intend to do, adequate outbound bandwidth, and enough storage for the media.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Use ffprobe, included with FFmpeg in many packages, to inspect your input file.
  • A video and audio source available on the server, either stored locally on the VPS or made accessible to FFmpeg.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room and a stream configured for your intended output.
  • A plan to protect the stream key, preserve logs, and restart the streaming process after a crash or server reboot.

There is no universal VPS size that fits every stream. Whether FFmpeg copies existing streams or decodes and re-encodes them, plus resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, scaling, and filters, all affect CPU use. A provider’s advertised vCPU count alone does not establish that the server can encode continuously at your target settings.

Choose the output settings and VPS around the workload

First decide whether the source can be sent as-is or must be re-encoded. Stream copying uses the source’s existing codecs and properties; it is only suitable when they are compatible with the output YouTube accepts and the stream you want. Re-encoding gives you control over resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, but places a sustained workload on the VPS.

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, the cited examples are:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not VPS specifications. Allow additional network headroom for audio, protocol overhead, and bitrate variation, and verify that the VPS can sustain the outbound rate. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for other codec and output combinations; the recommendations may change.

When comparing VPS options, consider sustained encoding performance, egress limits and charges, the route from the server’s region to YouTube, storage, and how you will recover the media and service after a restart. These criteria are more useful than selecting a plan from a vCPU number alone. No provider-specific plan performance or prices are established here.

Get a YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Open the stream settings and retrieve the ingest URL and stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS help page explains that you may need to reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock control in the URL field.
  3. Use the RTMPS destination where available. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  4. Keep the key secret. Do not commit it to a repository, place it in a public script, or expose it in public logs or shared shell history. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the VPS configuration.

The destination URL and key are credentials for sending a stream to your channel. Store them in a file or secret mechanism readable only by the service account or administrator that needs them, rather than embedding them in material others can access.

Install FFmpeg and inspect the media

Install FFmpeg using the package method supported by your Linux distribution, then check that both programs are available:

ffmpeg -version
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4

Review the input’s video and audio streams, dimensions, frame rate, and codecs before choosing whether to copy or encode. Confirm that the file path is stable and readable by the account that will run the service. If a playlist contains files with different formats, decide how to normalize them before building a continuous stream; a community Ubuntu-and-systemd setup illustrates that pattern, but its specific settings are examples rather than universal requirements: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.

Build and test an FFmpeg command

FFmpeg documents real-time reading and RTMP-family output in its protocol documentation. A typical command has four parts: an input read at real-time speed, optional looping, stream mapping and copy/encode choices, and an FLV output sent to the RTMPS endpoint. The following is a template, not a ready-to-run command; replace placeholders locally and do not publish a command containing a live key.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
  -c:v libx264 -preset medium -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/APP/STREAM_KEY"

This illustrative encode targets a 30 fps H.264 video stream with a 10 Mbps video bitrate and a two-second GOP/keyframe interval; that bitrate corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation only if the resulting output is actually 1080p30. The example does not scale input video, so add an appropriate scale filter if the source dimensions differ from the intended output. Select audio settings based on the source and YouTube’s current requirements. The RTMPS URL format varies with the ingest URL YouTube supplies; preserve its required path and place the key only in the expected location.

-re reads file input at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. If audio is absent, remove the audio mapping and audio options as appropriate rather than assuming an audio track exists. If the input already has compatible streams, stream copying may avoid encoding, but check its codecs, frame rate, dimensions, and other properties first. Confirm options against your installed FFmpeg version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the command interactively for an initial test. Check FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoding errors, then confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that video and audio arrive at the expected quality and the stream health is acceptable. Do not move on to unattended operation until a representative test works.

Run FFmpeg persistently with systemd

An SSH session is not a supervisor: if it closes, the process may stop. Run FFmpeg as a dedicated systemd service (or another service manager) so it can start on boot, restart after an unexpected exit, and keep logs for diagnosis. A typical systemd arrangement has a unit file with an ExecStart command, a restart policy such as Restart=always, and a nonzero restart delay. Exact paths, user, and secret-loading approach depend on the VPS and Linux distribution.

  1. Create a restricted configuration or environment file for the RTMPS URL and key, accessible only to root and the service account as needed. Keep secrets out of world-readable unit files and scripts.
  2. Create a systemd unit that runs FFmpeg under a dedicated, unprivileged account where practical. Point its command to the tested FFmpeg invocation and set a stable working directory if the input uses relative paths.
  3. Reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service to start at boot, and start it. Check the unit status and journal logs to confirm FFmpeg stays running and connects.
  4. Deliberately restart the service and reboot the VPS during a controlled test. Confirm that the service starts again, the media path is available, and YouTube receives the stream after startup.

A restart policy improves recovery from a process exit; it does not fix a missing file, full disk, invalid key, overloaded CPU, broken network route, or a problem at YouTube. Those failures need diagnosis and correction at their source.

Verify stream health and keep it maintainable

  • Watch moving video and listen for audio; a process that remains active can still send the wrong or silent content.
  • Confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate, and review its stream health messages.
  • Check FFmpeg and systemd logs when the stream disconnects or fails to start. Avoid logging secrets.
  • Check disk space and verify that files remain at the configured paths after updates or reboots.
  • Re-test after changing FFmpeg, media, encoder settings, firewall rules, or the VPS. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health while live.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health states, including noData when the live backend has no information about stream health: LiveStreams API documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg exits immediately or cannot open input Wrong path, permissions, missing file, or unsupported input Run ffprobe against the exact file as the service user; correct the path or access permissions and check the logs.
Authentication or connection failure at ingest Wrong RTMPS URL/key, key rotation, or network access problem Recheck the current URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room, update the protected service configuration, and verify outbound connectivity. Never paste the key into a public support post.
Video stutters, drops frames, or FFmpeg cannot encode in real time Insufficient sustained CPU capacity, demanding preset/filter, or unstable output path Inspect FFmpeg’s progress and system load. Reduce resolution or frame rate, choose a less demanding encoder preset, remove unnecessary filters, or use a VPS that sustains the required workload.
YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames Insufficient or variable outbound capacity, bitrate too high for the path, or mismatched settings Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation and actual sustained VPS upload performance; leave headroom and check the current encoder guidance.
Service restarts repeatedly The underlying FFmpeg error remains, such as a missing source, full disk, bad key, or unavailable network Inspect the systemd journal and resolve the original error. A restart loop alone does not restore the failed dependency.
Service works manually but not after reboot Unit is not enabled, the service environment differs, or files/secrets are inaccessible at startup Check systemd status, boot logs, service user permissions, configuration paths, and whether mounted storage is available when the unit starts.
